[Goanet-News] REVIEW: Tum Londonkar vo Goenkar (Ron Fidelis, TNN)
On which side is the grass greener? RON FIDELIS, TNN, Aug 16, 2010, 04.15am IST Rhymes are back. And such dialogues are even lovelier when they diffuse a tense situation in a tiatr. With a cast to die for, Anthony Sylvester's `Tum Londonkar vo Goenkar' (Are you a Londoner or Goan) is clearly a performance driven one. State awardee Jessie Dias plays the mother's role to her three sons with such intensity that her histrionics drives the audience to smiles as well as tears. Then again, with veteran comedianHortencio Pereira tickling the funny bone, this tiatr is entertaining enough. The story begins with Sipru (Hortencio) receiving his brother Lipru (Ben Evangelisto) who arrives from London. He is assisted in the humour department with comedian Lippu and Hortencio's real-life nephew Nato who plays the third brother - Gabru. Fatima D'Souza, Sharon Mazarello and Sabina's support to Hortencio's comic antics has the audience in splits. Sabina plays an African who wishes to settle down in Goa, while Sharon and Fatima are the other 'foreigners'. Contrasting lifestyles and cultures between London and Goa is what the plot of Tum Londonkar vo Goenkar showcases. What it ends up doing is expose several typical reactions of Indians towards the 'white skin' and the fascination of going abroad for better prospects. In his script Anthony Sylvester highlights how Goans usually react to outsiders - the migrants and the foreigners. The writer-director ends up giving his take on the popular saying `what we want we never have; what we have we never want'. Junior Nelson plays brother to Rosario Botelho, who is a Londonkar with a nose-in-the-air attitude. Junior Nelson, who also renders a political song on the Congress party, essays the role of a government servant, while Bhushan plays his wife. Heated arguments between the brothers revolves around selling ancestral homes and property in Goa, and how about many travel to the so-called greener pastures in foreign lands and forget their roots back home. The versatile Aliston and his little brother Aaron play their roles to perfection. The scene when Aaron assures his mother (Jessie) that he would opt to stay in Goa with her while her remaining two sons wish to go to the UK, is a tear-jerker. Loaded with cantos, trios, duets and quartets, and some excellent improvisation on the trumpet by Theo Alvares, `Tum Londonkar vo Goenkar' is undoubtedly a wholesome entertainer. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 22nd Sunday of the Year
22-Aug-2010 Dear Friend, All of us have had the occasion of meeting truly great people who are so simple and down to earth and self effacing and we are attracted to them. On the other hand we have also had the misfortune of meeting proud, braggarts whom we would like to shun and avoid in life. Sometimes we also encounter people with a false sense of humility who act humbly in order to attract attention and earn the praises of people. Humility should keep us down to earth and always be truthful. Let’s get down on our knees and acknowledge that all that we are and have is His gift to us! Have a humble thankful weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: Twenty-second Sunday Be humble! God loves the humble! 29-Aug-2010 Ecclesiasticus 3: 19-31 Hebrews 12: 18-24 Luke 14: 1-14 Today’s first reading from the Book of Sirach, also called the Book of Ecclesiasticus contains samples of the collected sayings of a famous teacher around 180 B.C. Because his overall advice was sound and hard to beat, in the early Church converts often received their moral training from his writings and the book came to be known as ‘Book of the Church’ –Ecclesiasticus. Sirach came to realize that pride is the temptation of all pagan cultures to which the Jews were attracted. Spirituality on the other hand moves us in a faith direction to being humble before God and placing our confidence not in our self and our achievements but in God. Sirach taught that humility gives us a true estimate of ourselves and God. Truly Humble An arrogant American musician once visited the house of the great composer Beethoven, sat down at the piano and proudly began to play Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. When he had finished, he asked the concierge, “I suppose many celebrities come here?” “Yes,” replied the man, “Pederewski was here last week.” The American continued, “And did he play the piano too?” “No,” said the old concierge, “He said he wasn’t worthy.” Ignacy Jan Pererewski was a brilliant Polish pianist, composer, orator, writer, social worker and philosopher who eventually became Prime Minister of Poland in 1919. He was deeply humble and is a model of what today’s readings exhort us to be. Francis Gonsalves in ‘Sunday Seeds for Daily Deeds’ In Luke’s Gospel Jesus is never far away from the table and much of his teaching is given at the table. Jesus had watched the guests coming to the table and seen how there was a scramble for the best seats and the places of honour, so he has a message for the guests. In God’s kingdom all of us are invited and all are guests. But how quickly we forget that all we have is but what we have received from God’s bounty. We imagine that the credit is our own, that we are special people and we have a right to the best of things. We become proud and self–opinionated, pushy, aggressive vying for prestige and popularity. There is no room for such people in God’s kingdom. “When you are invited make your way to the lowest seat and sit there.” Jesus is not here giving a lesson in table manners, but is making a point about the kingdom of God. Jesus is preaching and giving a message to his guests and the Pharisees, who proudly paraded around the temple showing their power and position and prestige there. Jesus condemns this attitude of self-absorption leading to a denial of God’s greatness and graciousness. To find favour with God we have to humble ourselves and acknowledge our nothingness before him. Jesus has a special message for his host: “When you give a banquet do not call your friends, relations and rich neighbours for fear that they repay your courtesy, but invite rather the poor, the crippled, the down and out that cannot pay you back. You will then be fortunate because your repayment will be made when the virtuous rise again.” The challenge is not to exclude any one –the poor, the blind, the lame, the sinners from the kingdom of God. Many religious leaders held that there was no place for the handicapped in the messianic banquet. Jesus reverses the equation –they will have the first place –the last shall be first, the humble exalted. Heaven will have many surprises for us. “To humble oneself, to receive a repayment: a religious way of speaking which many find suspect today, and not easy to bring on the open market. What did Jesus mean by it? At the feast of life, few hesitate to elbow their way to the top. But Jesus warns us: ‘That is not the way to enter into the kingdom; on the contrary one must lower oneself.’ ‘To lower oneself’ – immediately people think of certain morbid conditions born of self-hate or self-contempt, of flight from confrontation, of cringing in order to be accepted. Aggressivity is a natural strength of which one must know how to make good use! Granted, but not to assert one self against others, to dominate by force or seduction; for the best part of ourselves only unfolds in a relation

Re: [Goanet] Humble request to Dog Haters !!!
Ms. Anjali Mohan Rao: Respected Goanet contributors, I was beaten very badly by Tina (a huge female alsatian, then she was a stray near our previous house in Porvorim). If goanet had image uploading platform, I would shown my stitches on right leg. I had 18 stitches. I was very furious and wanted all dogs to be shot dead. My father Mohan Rao explained to me that, you can't think of killing all the dogs because one particular dog has beaten you. Like all HUMAN BEINGS are not TERRORISTS A few days later, I saw Tina following me again, but not barking, waging her tail with a glowing eye. I realised I was wrong. I went near her, she recognised me by smell and licked my stitches and sat on her knees, as if she is sorry. I instantly brought her home. She left me at her age of 14 and I cried like a little baby. Her whole life Tina treated me like her own daughter. I realised that she may have beaten me to punish me for my past sins. She is still alive in my heart. I have nine female dogs leaving with me now, who originally belonged to Miramar beach. Now, whenever I visit Miramar beach or Inox Multiplex, the dogs there gets the smell of one of their own and plays with me. They donot search my wallet for a biscuit. There are a few students of mine .e.g. Ms.Siddhi Parker, ( a humble hearted explorer), who are also doing the same thing of adopting street dogs. On my part, whenever I see a dog who is in a bad shape, I call up PFA - 9326125922 or International Animal Rescue (IAF) -0832- 2268328/ 2268272 or Anjela Kazi or Padmashree Advocate Dr. Norma Alwares and request them to make arrangements to lift them and do the needful. I am doing whatever little to save other citizens of dogbites and -stray dog menace- ( I curse myself when I had to use these three words) and also to save dogs being -murdered-. I donot blame any authority as those who work there are also a part of our society and all of us folly. I believe, one need not necessarily be a devout Hindu, Muslim or Christain and also an expert in quoting Geeta, Kuran or the Bible to be a lover of all living beings created by mother nature. I wish that good sense and wisdom prevails in all human beings, Peace, Anjali Mohan Rao -- -- Ms. Rao, I certainly admire you for allowing a stray dog to lick you unmindful of the fact that the dog could be rabid. Some strays may not be apparently rabid, but may carry rabies. The case of Fr. Cota who was licked by just a tiny a pup and contacted rabies and passed away is referred here. Perhaps you qualify for an award of sorts. My point here is that I am not objecting to well looked after pets though when I do visit people with pet dogs I do not appreciate being crotch sniffed nor do I like to sit on sofas covered with dog fur. But elsewhere on Goanet I have said that I want the stray population to be culled so that it might not overrun the place. So also I do object to being called a dog hater and a dog killer. You have your view point and I respect you for it and like wise I have mine though it does not make a difference if you accept it or not. -- Tony de Sa. tonydesa at gmail dot com M : +91 9975 162 897 Ph. : +91 832 2470 148 ^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v^v * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a socio-political voice. [Goanet] All religions cannot be equal
Santosh has misinterpreted the provisions of law and has drawn wrong conclusions. Nowhere in the Constitution of the land does it say that All religions are equally good or equally bad. Religions have their own distinct features and characteristics and can therefore never be equal. From different standpoints, some are bound to be either superior or inferior to the other. Even using elementary logic, it is easy to show how from different standpoints, some religions are bound to be either better or worse than the other. For instance, from the standpoint of equality of human beings, Christianity is superior to Hinduism while it is inferior to Buddhism. From the standpoint of Freedom of expression, Hinduism will be much superior since Christianity and Islam have a history of intolerance in this regard. From the standpoint of rationalism, Buddhism is much superior to many other religions while Jainism will probably be the best when it comes to respecting Animal Rights and so on and so forth. So even an elementary comparative study on religions will easily demonstrate how two different religions can never be equally good (or equally bad). From the legal perspective, “Equality of Religion” does not mean all religions are equally good or equally bad. All it means is the State must adopt neutrality towards religions; that there must not be a State Religion, that it must not give preferential treatment to any one religion over the other; that all religions are equal before the eyes of the law and must be treated equally. Here is the precise observation from the relevant para from the S. R. Bommai v. Union of India Supreme Court Judgment: “Secularism is one of the basic features of the Constitution. While freedom of religion is guaranteed to all persons in India, from the point of view of the State, the religion, faith or belief of a person is immaterial. To the State, all are equal and are entitled to be treated equally. In matters of State, religion has no place. No political party can simultaneously be a religious party. Politics and religion cannot be mixed. Any State Government which pursues unsecular policies or unsecular course of action acts contrary to the constitutional mandate and renders itself amenable to action under Article 356.” Cheers Sandeep * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a socio-political voice. I think the year 1966 which Anna-Maria refers to, may have been the year when Goa Today was published under it's new ownership. It was FIRST published much earlier and started by my dear friend Lambert Mascarenhas. Here's an extract from the Editorial of the Ruby Anniversary issue: On this momentous occasion, right at the start, I can't help offering my salutation to the magazine's stout-hearted founder-editor, Lambert Mascarenhas, now a nonagenarian - for not only founding the magazine, but for nurturing it for 19 long years before passing on the baton to us -- Mervyn Maciel * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a socio-political voice. Secularists and non-believers also come across as feeling somehow superior. I get the feeling reading your post below. Can't we just let people accept what they want to, without offending their views and their faith, however illogical it appears to us? FN, There are supposedly 14,000 people reading the posts here. Regardless of what is written, some are going to get offended by the content. Others will not. Others yet, will agree with my comments. Secondly, I don't think anyone has the capacity to write in a 'superior' way. When a reader perceives a post superior or the attitude of the writer as superior, the reader is using his own fears/strengths to judge. The less secure the person, the easier it become to judge. I don't think any reasonable person would perceive my original response to be written in an offensive way. However, since the topic is a sensitive one, some will gather more from the post than what is written. I commend the thought provoking analysis published by Rajendra Kakodkar and hope that his wisdom will motivate every Goan in Goa. We can only hope that the Goans in Goa wake up and stake their claim to what is rightfully theirs, a share in the mineral wealth of the state which should belong to all the people of Goa, Not only the few who are manipulating, bribing, being bribed or are indifferent to what they are losing. I hope that they will make their voices heard at the upcoming elections. This is the only chance that can be taken advantage of in order to instill into our Greedy and rotten politicians a sense of the necessity of Governance undoubtedly necessary for the smooth and efficient running of the state and curb and possibly eliminate corruption. [Goanet] ADOLF HITLER's Christianity OBAMA Hindu Fundamentalists
Christians around the world seem to be completely unaware of the degree to which Christians in Germany threw their support behind Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party and how the Nazis mixed religion with government, and the support for Hitler by the Protestant and Catholic Churches in Germany. And Christians around the world seem to be unaware as to why the middle/upper class hindus have thrown their support behind Hindu fundamentalists. The Nazis and Adolf Hitler are commonly thought of as representing the antithesis of Christianity and Christian values. If that's true, why did tens of millions of German Christians adore Hitler, join the Nazis, and participate in the Holocaust (among other atrocities)? Hitler and the Nazis promoted a Christian nationalism, anti-communism, anti-Semitism and return to traditional values which most Christians appreciated. The Nazi party platform specifically endorsed 'positive' Christianity. Hitler explicitly appealed to Christianity on a regular basis and this was part of why he was popular. Not every Christian supported the Nazis, of course, but he was most popular with conservative Christians seeking a restoration of traditional values. Before the Nazis took power in Germany, conservative Christians were actively engaged in defending German Christian culture against the dangers of modernism, secularism and communism. They insisted that Christianity be the basis for politics and culture; moreover, they were determined to protect society from Anti-Christian influences. The mass murder of Jews in Germany, as well as throughout Europe, is generally attributed to the Nazis - but committed Nazis in the German government could not have achieved what they did alone. They had to have help from others throughout society and a source of significant, critical help was the Catholic Church. Yes, the Catholic Church was actively complicit in the mass murder of Jews. Cardinal Secretary of State, Eugenio Pacelli (later to become Pope Pius XII) signed the Concordat (agreement) between Nazi Germany and the Vatican at a formal ceremony in Rome on 20 July 1933. The Concordat effectively legitimized Hitler and the Nazi government to the eyes of Catholicism, Christianity, and the world. Like many Christians, Hitler wanted people to make an effort to fulfill God's will rather than simply talk about it. Unlike others, though, he tried to do something about it. Adolf Hitler was a catholic but he had problems with the Catholic Church and eventually wanted to replace Catholicism with his brand of Christianity, the very fact that Hitler wanted a united German Church proves that he supported Christianity. Nazi Christian soldiers died as Protestants and Catholics and their grave markers testified to their religion. What did Adolf Hitler think about Jesus Christ? According to Hitler's own words: 'My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them.' Christianity is proclaimed by its adherents as a religion of peace which transcends national borders in a manner that unites humanity. The reality, though, is that Christianity has been deeply involved not only with ideologies of nationalism, but also ideologies of war and violence. It's happened before and it could happen again. The activities of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda Hindu Fundamentalists are pushing many secular peaceful Christians around the world into rebellion against these anti-christian forces. Major Problems INDIA is facing : 1. Over-Population and Female foeticide/infanticide. 2. Water shortage in most parts of the country 3. The low standard of education in government schools 4. High cost of real estate in urban India 5. A 'slow ' and 'overburdened' legal system 6. Bad Roads 7. Communalism and divisive politics. 8. Allurement/Forcible conversions and re-conversion activities of the Christian Hindu missionaries. 9. Low wages/rewards. 10. Unemployability of youth 11. Lack of jobs which pay decant wages. 12. High cost / unavailability of electricity 13. Farmer suicides Debt. 14. Inability to produce Olympic calibre sportsmen 15. Border disputes with China and Pakistan 16. Terrorists (internal) 17. [Goanet] Lion Roars - Goa Broke?
*Fishy fiscal propriety* Is Goa going broke? If the answer is no, it could well be getting there. A former development commissioner now back in Delhi once told me the direction in which the Digambar Kamat government was heading, it would hit financial road’s end sooner than later weighed down as it is by a hefty pension bill of an army of retired workers, not to mention the cost of government workers currently occupying table space. As on December 31, 2009 your government’s market borrowings were Rs 229880.23 (in lakhs) up from Rs 163111.72 the previous year. In other words, it borrowed Rs 66768.51 more from the market within the space of just 12 months. This kind of figure does not exactly spell fiscal prudence especially in a state where VAT collection is virtually nonexistent in major areas of the tourism and mining industries. How many restaurants and how many in ancillary services to the mining industry you know, give you a proper tax added on bill even if you ask for one. But I wager you also have an endless list of these and other traders that are plainly affronted if you ask for a bill, a proper one that is, not a hand written bit of notepad paper. By the way, market borrowing sources are those other than the central government and institutions that lend like LIC, NABARD, NCDC, REC, HUDCO and PFC. *The Beginning* At the end of 2007, its market borrowings were Rs 122735.8. In 2006 end it was Rs 100942.89. In 2005 it was Rs 99443.01 and in 2004 end it was Rs 96121.31. Clearly from 2006 its financial management went awry and its borrowings took a frenzied pace. This stands out clearly in all its borrowings from other sources too. For example in 2004 its loan borrowings from the central government stood at Rs 234332.44. By 2009 it went up to Rs 334970.12, a hike of Rs 100637.68. It also borrowed from the six institutional lenders named above. To cut a long and worrying story short by end 2009 it had borrowed Rs 593201.26 up from Rs 346755.77 borrowed in 2004 end. While no Indian state can claim to be financially prudent, point is our MLA’s discuss monitoring of fish sold in the market in the Assembly instead of fiscal discipline. *Deep Blue Sea* It could get worse if the environmentally dangerous Panjim-Vasco Sea Link Project is undertaken considering the consultant Louis Berger Group alone was paid Rs 89 lakh. There’s something between the Congress and the deep sea because successive governments have paid a total of Rs 21.60 lakh towards the Oceanorium project which might needed a lot more oxygen before it begins to breathe, if ever. For the record, Rs 10.60 lakh was paid to the Transaction Advisor and Rs 11 lakh spent to build a compound wall around the project site which so far has seen only rain fall and nothing else. There’s the River Princess calamity. Then there’s also Greenfield Mopa airport project which for sheer lunacy must rank second only to that scam of the century, the Commonwealth Games. National Games 2011 did you say? Yes, there’s that too. *They protest too much* What is with traders and shop owners in Panjim? They protest too much. This time it’s the Municipal Market Tenants’ Association protestations against the Corporation of the City of Panjim’s (CCP) pay parking around the municipal market. In the past, traders have protested every citizen friendly decision of the police traffic cell and the CCP to decongest the crammed city which gets crammed by the building so to speak. It’s bursting at the seams and the buildings keep coming in a wave. Traders in Panjim have usurped public parking space, some of them using devious ways like placing hand carts in front of their shops. In fact I wonder why the traffic cell even bothers to defend itself for the mayhem on the roads but more on that on another day soon. It’s also okay to take over entire pavements. Herald pointed out sometime ago how Kamat Hotel in Panjim conveniently allowed panwallahs outside because it helped their almost entirely tourist clientele forcing locals to walk on the road. The Panjim traffic cell pointed out how shop owners parked their own vehicles on 18th June Road from morning till closing time occupying most of the parking space. There are more blatant examples of appropriation of parking spaces. Do us a favour please, cut the crap and put a zip on that lip of yours. *Here’s really why* This will shock you for their brazenness. The CCP has been left holding a water consumption bill of Rs 12,06,952 and an electricity bill of Rs 62,20,833 which traders in the municipal market have refused to pay. That’s a total of Rs 74,27,785 of money owed to CCP which desperately needs funds. There could be more owed by way of nonpayment of both rent and maintenance charges. Oh yes, these guys are in a league of their own and more. [Goanet] Lion Roars - Sell-out of Goa by its politicians
*Calling the kettle black* The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) having its own way in Goa is nothing new. It’s because our politicians, unlike those in other States, just hate to protect anything that is Goan or can be identified as part of Goa. Only recently, the MPT became an exception for the ruling Congress government because frankly it went a tad too far. Remember all those advertisements establishing MPT’s territorial rights in Goa. What impudence! If that happened in Mumbai, Shiv Sena goons would have taken violent action against the source of the irritant. In the sedate South, the DMK in Tamil Nadu would have said “mind it” and that would be that. You doubt that? Google Chennai’s dailies of June 30 and you will see a report with a picture of (workers) of the Chennai Corporation taking over land encroached upon by a 5-star hotel owned by Apeejay Surendra Park Hotels Ltd. In Kochi, there would be no cause for concern in the first place. Malaylees don’t take BS from anyone, outsiders particularly. Kerala said ‘no 60m wide highways’. It ended there. Not Goa, our politicians don’t want to upset the apple cart, if you get my drift. They don’t even protect their own turf. *Expansionistic MPT* The MPT has a slew of expansionist projects, none of which augur well for Goa. If given a free hand to do what it wants, it will not only change the demography, it will change forever the horizon over Baina Bay and Vasco Bay and in future over Betul too. Driving the engine behind it will be the Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan, the MPT will only be a means to an end though it will partake of the cake. Its plans forced the Congress to warn the MPT that implementation of these will change the demography of Vasco da Gama. Coming from the Congress it sounded really funny because that is something the Congress achieved on its own through its inequitable industrial policies, etcetera. I guess it needed to issue a sound byte Goans love to hear. But, using it selectively, is adding insult to injury because WE THE PEOPLE have been saying it for three going on four decades! Or, by saying that, was the Congress reserving its sole right to change the demographics of Goa. Instead of the sound byte, it might begin by finding out what the MPT is doing/has done with a rather large acreage of land leased to it, which it has admitted it failed to monitor. The MPT is sitting pretty on 68 Ha under the dock area in Headland and slopes at Mormugao. In Baina, Vasco da Gama the MPT took on lease 17 Ha. Between 1971 and 1985 various governments allotted it nearly 52 Ha, while the MPT managed to “reclaim” nearly 25 Ha of land. It is possible the government isn’t earning a rupee from this. The government of 1981 leased 3.62 acres to Goa Shipyard Limited and it’s possible it may not have signed a deed agreement till now. For the record, the government of 2007 also leased 10,958 sq mt to GSL. * Lost in Translation* Between March last year and March 2010 all it had achieved was write a series of letters to all concerned in New Delhi, formed a Group of Ministers; but did not even succeed in getting old Portuguese documents translated/researched to put a finger on the touchy subject of jurisdiction and what was inherited and by whom from the Portuguese. In fact, ex-advocate general Carlos Ferreira excused himself from the research and was replaced by lawyer Jose E. Coelho Pereira who apparently also opted out because the ball appears to be back in Ferreira’s court. The GoM met thrice, on October 22, September 26, and October 22 of 2008. So much for the Congress’ concern about demographic change. At stake is about 1,000-1,500 Ha of land and nearly 2.5 km of waterfront land. In other words, it could hit you up to the west of Cortalim. *Joker in the pack* I don’t mean this in a funny way because as if it had an ace in hand, the government got the toothless Goa State Pollution Control Board to dash off yet another letter to the MPT - asking it to consider the cumulative impact of their projects, include these in the EIA/EMP study, hold a public hearing and submit hard copies of the proposed 4 mmtpa coal/coke handling port terminal at berth no. 11. The board also asked MPT to deposit Rs 5 lakh with it towards holding the public hearing. That’s right your concerned government didn’t want to spend Rs 5 lakh on this when it has spent crores on consultancy fees. Yes, it’s the same Pollution Board that hotels in Colva show the middle finger to. The letter was written in May, 2010. No guesses where the MPT put that letter. And oh, in a moment of pique, the GoM voted not to ask MPT for NOCs to conduct any activity on land the MPT claims is theirs. In other words, the GoM proved to be just as toothless and wimpish as the board! *Feedback 2280935, 9822152164 lionroars@gmail.com * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a
[Goanet] Tribute to a Hindu father
I don't know what to say when some people question my being a Hindu by birth. Very few are interested in knowing about the pains I took for my religious and spiritual education in a family which was very ritualistic. My father was an epitome of Hinduism as he understood it from his perspective. My father Mukund Vishwanath Kamat would have been 93 years old on Aug. 24 th. He expired in October 2001. As I am getting older, I suppose, I can catch his life from a more mature perspective. He may forgive for any transgression. I know him as a very devout Hindu. I have not seen anyone performing a puja everyday for 4-5 hours, for more than 60 years, three times a day. Then there were pilgrimages, yadnyas, abhisheks at temples. We couldn't study at night when he chanted (japa) OM NAMAH SHIVAY four-five thousand times. The century old house with old fashioned tiles would reverberate with the chant. He would not stop till midnight. Then it would begin all over again in the morning, then in the afternoon, late. He would have the lunch at 4 or 5 PM. Once I asked him-Father why are you doing all this? He replied innocently- I am collecting 'punya' for all of you and for your kids when they would be born. He had full faith in karmavipaka. He never missed a single Hindu festival. We are branded GSB vaishnavaites owing allegiance to Partagali monastery. But my father was a polytheist. In his pantheon our family deity-Lord Ganesha was on top, followed by Lord Siva, then Lord Vishnu, Lord Ramachandra and Lord Krishna. But he also worshiped our sthandevata-Sri Damodar of Margao/Zambaulim. He was also fond of Lord Hanuman. Whatever he chanted we also memorized automatically. He fed the crows and cows without fail and no beggar went without food or alms He was cheerful in welcoming every guest. He never discussed the guest's religion or caste. Everyone shared the table equally. Actually I became aware about castes only later, in the college. As school going kids he imposed prayers on us and I blindly followed them for some years before starting my own exploration in the srutis and smrutis and vedanta. I began arguing with him on understanding the meaning of the Sanskrit verses. I gave him the translation of mantrapushpanjali. He was impressed. But he was unhappy as I gave up the normal rituals one by one. With some persuasion he had my thread ceremony. But I don't wear the sacred thread any more. At one point he thought that I had become a 'nastik- an atheist. But when he heard me reading the full text of srimadbhagavadgeeta after my uncle Jagganath Kamat expired, he changed his impression. there would be problems, it is Ok now since you've married Melinda he said while blessing my wife. But I knew that he was somewhat unhappy. He was worried about my younger sister Nilima's marriage after I married a Christian. In fact we as a couple were avoided like a plague for several years , like untouchables by all those near and dear, who were afraid that their sons and daughters would not find any match within the community ( and caste). it was only after they took care of their matches that diplomatic channels' were slowly opened. That was a face of the society which I had failed to recognise earlier. My father could not offer any rational explanation of these taboos, unwritten codes.. as we were suffering...he understood my despair but old age did not permit him to do anything...at least he did not disown a rebel son... Due to family objections me and Melinda had to leave the house on the day of our civil registration. A friend arranged accomodation for us. We had to build our nest from nothing, stick by stick... But we continued to interact with him. I gave him the books which he had no opportunity to read earlier. These included Dnyaneshwari, Tukaramachi gatha, Dasbodh, translations of major Upanishads. He immersed himself in reading these texts in the final phase of his life. Then my sister Nilima married John Eric Menezes. The almighty had taken care of divine justice. It was good to have John as my brother in law. He is very cultured and joins us in annual chavath family get together. My father taught us self respect-swabhiman. He used to say baithana to aise baithana ki koi na bole utth. bolna to aise bolna ki koi na bole zooth' To educate and feed a large family he slogged without rest. If he were to miss the last bus to Calapur-he would walk from Panaji to st Cruz even when it rained. He abhorred all types of self declared Godmen. They are frauds, he used to proclaim. I see his point now in the growing spiritual market. After he completed 80 years, he began losing his eyesight. That was the time I began interviewing him on family history. Our discussion turned to spiritual matters. I spent several evenings with him discussing vedanta. Then I lectured him on tatvam asi, aham brahmasmi' and Adi shankaracharya... He was impressed by Tarkatirtha Laxmanshastri Joshi's essays... now he was beginning to get other dimensions of

[Goanet] One gets lifer for killing brother-in-law
-- Samir Umarye PANAJI: The sessions court here on Saturday sentenced one Raju Shirke to undergo life imprisonment for stabbing to death his brother-in-law with a knife in 2008 at Bicholim. The police had charged the accused under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for killing Sanjay on October 9, 2008 in his house at Piddukarwado in Bicholim. The police had managed to nab Shirke on the next day after he was absconding following the murder. According to the police, the accused, who was staying in the house belonging to the deceased, was carrying on tailoring work in the rear portion of the house. The dispute over the house property led to the gruesome incident, police said. During the hearing of the case, the public prosecutor S Desai pointed out that after stabbing the victim, the accused had left the house. The deposition of the family members of the deceased proves that the accused was the only other person in the house at the time of the assault, Desai argued. The prosecution also stated that the conduct of the accused in not rendering any help to his brother-in-law, when he was bleeding, also goes against him. The defence, on the other hand, argued that the case was based on circumstantial evidence and there was no proof that the accused was in the house at the time of murder. While convicting the accused, judge Nutan Sardessai held that prosecution established beyond doubt that the accused was in the house apart from Sanjay and there was no outsider present at the time of the incident. “The manner in which the injury was inflicted in umbilicus area, which proved fatal in next 15 minutes or so, would clearly establish that the accused inflicted the said injury with that degree of violence with knowledge and intent to cause the death of Sanjay” the court observed. The court has also directed the accused to pay afine of Rs 10,000.(ToI) * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a socio-political voice. [Goanet] Australian Greens Win First Seat in National Election
Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- The Australian Greens won its first lower house seat in a general election as support for the party surged almost 50 percent, making it a potential power broker for the nation’s next government. “It’s clear the Greens will have the balance of power in the Senate,” party leader Bob Brown said late yesterday after Adam Bandt took the seat of Melbourne from Labor. “In the lower house, results also show we’ll bring both the major parties into the 21st century. People have endorsed greater action on climate change.” The Greens won 11.4 percent of the national vote the commission’s website showed. That compares with 7.8 percent in 2007, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. The coalition wants to set up an A$1 billion fund to encourage companies to reduce emissions and establish a 15,000- strong “green army” to repair environmental damage. [Goanet] Goa's landscape
One day you sing Vande Matram and the next you criticise the government for its lopsided development. Arre tujea toklem kitem bigodlam? BC Panaji appears like a city waiting to be clean shaven-in a haste to get rid of its? famous tree cover. The city did not look so ugly five years back when I wrote about it in this edition on June 15, 2006. All over Goa, settlements are eating into forests and areas with high tree cover. Townships are coming up close to natural lakes and reservoirs. Roads ? legal or illegal are seen proliferating indicating systematic work to open new and inaccessible areas for real estate development. The huge private hotel project coming up within just 40 metres of Siridao bay (not a river as notified under CRZ) girdling the Bambolim beach appears as a distinct eyesore. But the CZMA would not be convinced even after measuring the distance using the ruler provided by GE. There is very little scope left in the eco-sensitive island of Tiswadi for spatial planning. The latest images show the pressure of urbanisation. Tiswadi is slowly reaching the point of no return - the maximum carrying capacity. And is it any wonder that in this island not a single place can be identified for sanitary landfill? Development around Bainguinim shows that these people would never tolerate a landfill in their backyard as property values may fall. So, highly urbanised Tiswadi is in danger of sinking under a pile of untreated solid waste. Even areas which were once thought out of reach and difficult to access are not getting spared. The uniformly green semicircular Curca-Santana-Gouli-Moula watershed is being engulfed by the outgrowth from the rapidly developing Kadamba plateau. The entire stretch of one of the finest urban beaches in the world - semicircular Caranzalem-Miramar beach has been vertically fragmented at 40 locations. This has endangered its? last remaining sand dunes. Heavy siltation in the Mandovi is causing formation of mudflats. A new triangular mudflat has developed parallel to the Ribander causeway -almost one km long and 200 metres in width. This would block the land to river crossflow. This mudflat was just 380 metres long in December 2003. So it is elongating in the direction of Panaji at the rate of 90 metres per year. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ISSUES BEING DEBATED: In East Africa, despite colonialism, the British afforded the Goan a sliver of a socio-political voice. Gina, Shame on you. I tried a google search of the Bible, and this is what I got: # Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death. Maybe, just maybe, if you are a Christian know all, then you need to be careful when you question your bible. Many years when we were in school, our teacher told us that only Shakespeare and the Bible cover every topic under the sun. She just got proved right on the subject of murderers. In fact I got not one, but 6 references to murderers in the Bible. If a dog is a pest, it must be put away. And that is not murder. God gave man dominion over everything on earth, and man has a responsibility to safeguard God's creation. Gabriel put it well, giving you the example of the germs. Re: [Goanet] Lion Roars - Goa Broke?
Dear Lionel, Pls change your mind about settling down in Chennai. Goa will miss you, and what is worse, you will cry for not getting something juicy like this to report from Chennai. Our Digamber Kamat is a rubber band and a string puppet combined together. He stretches to any length , and he 'nods' his head involuntarily like a puppet on a string, especially when he wants to mean 'NO' it is involuntarily translated into 'Yes'. And if you carefully see his waist band ( 'the belt', as we call it), it is never tight. Because he has never gotten into the intricacies of 'belt tightening' exercises. It is more of whose father what goes but let me expand. And, as for the assembly sessions of late, our elected 'actors' are performing for the TV cameras, one not wanting to be left behind by the other to perform. Me thinks Goans must opt for the cancellation of the Cable TV broadcast rights from the Assembly so that non-entities remain non-entities and do not become famous screen actors. [Goanet] As India Celebrates-Six Deadly Sins That Plague India+ the seventh sin
JC wrote- That having been said I am not so sure that Baliga's assessment of Nehru is accurate, unless Nehru was really daft. I'd only say this about Nehru and ALL other politicians: They take decisions mainly for political expediency. I also believe that there is NO such thing as democracy. There is a facade being presented, and that is all there is to that. The thing we call Democracy is a mechanism used by some to make flowery speeches and extravagant promises to con the naive to elect a set of thieving dictators every 5 years. If you do not believe me . Try get an honest and scrupulous + principled man without money an election ticket and elected in 2010. If you are in doubt, call up Tony Correia-Afonso in Benaulim. Yes, He is an honest, upright and capable Goan and also a 'Bharati'. On the matter of Salazar, I would invite Vasant Baliga to expand on the effect of Salazar on the vast majority of Goans antes 1961; I will accept feelings as relevant IF they are based mainly and reasonably on known facts and not on propaganda, hearsay and revisionism. Just as one judges the state of health care in a country by the Infant Mortality Rate (and not what health care is only available to he wealthy), I suggest that the affect and effect of Salazar on Goa could reasonably be assessed on the basis of HOW the poor, indigent and elderly were managing during his stint. Additionally, here are some questions which may be reasonably asked: a: Do the vast majority of Goans feel safer in their homes and on the roads in 2010 v 1961? b: Is the environment better in 2010 v 1961? c: Is Goa cleaner in 2010 v 1961? d: In 1961: Was the standard of living for the average Goan living in Goa better or worse than the average resident of Savantwadi, Ratnagiri, Kawar and surrounding areas? e: Are the folks who ripped Goa's natural sources antes 1961 any different from the ones who are ripping it in 2010? I will skip the topic of the satyagrahis who crossed into Goa for now. I doubt 'satyagrahi' can cross any border in 2010 without meeting similar or even worse consequences. I conclude with this point: It is nice to know that Salazar (according to Vasant Baliga) is very relevant to feelings of Goans (in 2010). I hope the Goans, Baliga refers to, realise that they were recently (in 2010) considered quite irrelevant by Digambar Kamat. Sincerely, jc My Response: Dear JC Baab, Greetings! As regards 1961,Nehru never regretted the take over of Goa but got his comeuppance the next year when the Chinese humiliated him and he died a lonely and broken man in 1964,his Panchshila and Non Alignment Policy in ruins, after he had to grovel before Kennedy in 1962 for Military Aid.The military takeover of Goa was, in my opinion, wrong and misplaced and was contrary to India's professed foreign policy at that time-Nehru spoiled the global image of India for temporary political gain and perhaps to divert public attention from other pressing matters.Although Salazar was adamant against negotiation on Goa,sooner or later Portugal would have negotiated-subsequent events proved that with the collapse of his fascist dictatorship in the mid seventies and the Carnation revolution. Democracy has it’s flaws, but is the only system where a robustly free press, independent judiciary and periodic elections hold people accountable.Dictatorship of any kind can never be a substitute. We saw that during the Emergency rule under Indira Gandhi.Corruption is presently endemic in India, including Goa and is eating at the roots of India's polity. The PM is personally honest but presides over a corrupt Cabal.Goa suffers in this regard, like the rest of India and has it's share or more of dishonest politicians. Now as regards development of Goa from 1961 onwards-it presently has the third highest per capita income of Rupees 1,06,000,just behind Delhi and Chandigarh. All economic, social and infrastructural indices show a great improvement in the last fifty years. In the Sixties there was no electricity and water supply in the villages and hardly any pucca road connectivity.Literacy is now at 80% as opposed to 30% in 1961.Healthcare access as also telecommunications and road connectivity have also vastly improved. There is no dire poverty in Goa, as we know it, as compared to the rest of India.Portugal did not invest adequately in Goa's infrastructure-the British did pay attention to India's infrastructure. a: Do the vast majority of Goans feel safer in their homes and on the roads in 2010 v 1961? Yes and No.The vast majority of Goans ,who lived in Goa, upto1961, were disenfranchised and lived in a continuous state of fear and were suppressed under a dictatorship-a small elite who toed the line and were part of the establishment reaped the fruits.Complete Freedom of Expression and Belief for the majority did not exist and there was no free press. However, law and order was probably better under a

[Goanet] Floriano's diary report for 23 August 2010
The first thing I did in the moring is to wait for the office hours to commence. Then I placed at call on 2470344 which number is the most prestigious telephone number of the Moira Panchayat, courtessy BSNL. To the voice on the other end of the line ( though I could identify it) I asked to speak to the the esteemed 'part time' VP Secretary, Mr. Chetan Shirodkar ( who incidentally hold the permanent post of the regular Secretary for the Pomburpa Panchayat). The question 'Who is speaking' was asked, answered, and voila A're tujem kam zalem. You can collect your papers was a jolt for me from the unexpected. It was the most esteemed Sarpanch of VP Moira on the other end of the line. Oh ! Thank you very very much is all I could mutter before putting down the telephone. Just then I received a landline call from my brother-in-law who is running the general stores cum electronic repairs shop at the Panchayat rented premises to inform me that the Panchayat clerk, Mr.Mahdev Shirodkar had dropped in on last Friday envening to tell him to convey a message to me saying that the papers are ready. That means the Esteemed Sarpanch of the VP Moira had found it fit to sign on the dotted line after I had a long duel with him and the Deputy on the same matter of delaying my papers. Therefore, I stop at the esteemed Moira Panchayat on my way to Mapusa to collect my 'a month delayed' forwarding letters to the TCP, PWD and Health' to consider the NOC for Occupancy of my 2006 started residential building which has 3 permissions to build and subjected to pay twice the amount of construction license fees. And as I was wanting to park my 4-wheeler, I see a stampede of sorts. The red-light car of the Minister for Tourism who is also the MLA of the Tivim Constituency where Moira was delimited for the last Assembly Elecitons ( now delimited into Aldona Constituency) with the Minister sorrounded by people, him come to distribute coconut palm saplings. I push into the crowd of the Minister's wellwishers cum adorers, tap him on his back and say Nilkant .. good to see you in Moira and walk upstairs to collect my papers. From the top, I could see the brand new first time Minister in action, collecting the account forms for the vote-bank, busy with his clients. From the bird's-eye view from the top verandah of the VP Moira, I attract the Minister's attention by saying Minister Sir ( the minister taking a few seconds to locate the source of this greetings) - Salaam to you I say. This Panchayat building requires demolition, completely and totally as it is fustrating the people who want to be legal [Yhi Panchayat lokak trass dita. Yhem Panchayat building modh kiteak amkam Panchayatuch naka] The minister took a few gulps and said Yes we shall demolish this one and build a new one It is anybody's guess to decifer what the minister meant by those words. I cursed myself later because I did not have the presence of mind, preoccupied as it is, to remove my cell phone and take a picture of the Minister ensuring his vote-bank by dishing out coconut palm saplings. I have made a point to make a note for the next edition of the Road Map for Goa to include the following: No Minister or the MLA of GSRP will ever distribute free goodies like these coconut saplings to the people. That these goodies shall be distributed by the heads of the concerned departments ( in this case the Agriculture Department). [Goanet] Parrikar, Jerry, Nitin Leonardo
The Editor Herald, Panaji Sir, This in reference to recent anti-Parrikar letters to Editor in Herald. Well i have a different opinion about Parrikar this time. Not only he was addressed in the Assembly as honourable Leader of Opposition by his opponents, Congress and others, he is also a great home-worker. His questionings were of great significance and important to the people of Goa. It is to be believed, if you only have a strong Opposition Party you can expect a good working Government, though we all know that present Congress Government is a failed and most corrupt Government. Mr. Parrikar, however is doing fine justice to his position in the House by questioning the rulling Party on each and every failures, and we need such a person to open up every failures and excesses of the Government and its Ministers. If any one want to say Parrikar, when he was ruling as CM, was no less or worst than expected it was the duty of the then opposition Party (Congress) to open up Parrikar's abuses and failures. It is not Parrikar's fault if he had a weak opposition, who may have been there only to warm the chairs of the House and get their salaries and other remunarations instead of questioning him on his abuses and failures. Mr. Parrikar, as i have seen recently in the House with few of his fierce accusation against some of the Ministers is the only best among some of his Party members to take the Government to task. Opposition will do great injustice to the People of Goa if they seat in the Assembly and do nothing. We the people of Goa need such a type of person in the opposition if we will want a working type of Government to rule Goa well. I am not a pro-BJP but i liked his work well as an opposition Leader. Therefore i would proudly say, Parrikar did justice to his position. Thanks. [Goanet] Sudden spurt in number of beggars puzzle Goa police
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help other CONSUMERS to be better informed. - -- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre (GDRC) Email: goad...@gmail.com --- -- Sudden spurt in number of beggars puzzle Goa police -- The festive and the tourist seasons might be some time away but beggars appear to have been heading into the state in hordes and occupying strategic positions to make the best earnings, even as the sources said that the police have begun inquiries to find out whether a syndicate was behind the multiplication of beggars in the state. The sources further said that the police have been rounding up beggars and producing them before courts as required under law but the beggars were being let off with a warning, prompting them to hit the streets soon after their release as there was no deterrence. In the latest case, six beggars were rounded up by Panaji police on Friday but were released by the judicial magistrate first class after a warning. Sources in the police said that there was every possibility of an organised racket being run in the state with some kingpin bringing the beggars and later collecting them along with the daily collection late in the evening. “We will look into all aspects of the case and take steps to prevent the racket being run,” said a senior police official adding that the poor persons might be victims of the racketeers. The police also suspect that some of the beggars might be used by the racketeers to collect information about movement of the businessmen and their clientele for committing crimes such as robbery, etc. A police official said that they would intensify the drive against begging to provide trouble-free movement for the tourists and the people of the state and also to prevent robberies, etc. A police inspector said that some people have turned into professional beggars and could be seen in various parts of the cities in the state, where some people give them offerings on daily basis on humanitarian grounds, especially in cases when they carry young children in their arms while they beg. A substantial number of the beggars are old people but some young men speaking good English also have been seen begging. He also said that the police could act only if these people were found begging and that having recognised policemen many of the beggars just sit idle at places till the policemen move out of the area, thus avoiding any action against them. Most beggars target foreigners and the affluent and go on harassing them till they part with some cash. The police official further said that beside beggars, hawkers and Lamanis were the other nuisance to the public and the tourists and that action would be taken against them too. He said that some of the hawkers also start begging and there was suspicion that they were behind some of the robberies reported in the cities. He said that a strict watch would be kept on the movement of the hawkers/Lamanis to prevent occurrence of thefts (especially from parked cars), etc. http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/sudden-spurt-number-beggars-puzzle-goa-police - The Navhind Times 22/8/2010 page 1 -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK -- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa -- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mail: goa...@gmail.com Visit: http://goacan.blogspot.com -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. Re: [Goanet] BJP
Please check the time of this post It is 12.12 a.m. - 24 August, 2010 I came down to my den after having watched Ms. Mehra and the Goa BJP clan exercising their vocal chords how they intend to get 5 % of the gullible catholic vote in Goa to get absolute majority. What a way to dream ! And I came down to say, Aye! the BJP should have it - The BJP should have it. Not because I am enamored to the BJP. Why? Because I am totally disillusioned with the CONGRESS- NCP combine. In any case this combine should not have it. Therefore who else is better suited to woo the catholic votes? But what put me off is what Ms. Mehra was saying. She said that the BJP will convert the Municipal areas, the taluka areas ( which means Panchayats) and consolidate its position. Before sending Ms. Mehra to GOA, the stupid BJP bigwigs should have first given Ms. loudmouth Mehra a refresher course as to what is Municipal and Panchayat level grass-roots self governance bodies, in the first place. Ms Mehra, along with all the BJP bigwigs of Goa , including the BJP's Goa blue-eyed boy- Menorah Paprika, must know and understand that the self-rule governance is independent of any POLITICAL PARTY or in other words these institutions should not be partisan institutions ... in other words, these institutions should be completely isolated from Party Politics, which party politics should be only confined to the Local Assemblies and the Parliament. And, I do hope that Goa's Archbishop, when approached by Ms. loudmouth, no substance, Mehra, should give her the refresher course in local self-governance politics, as to what is it all about, that the 'KOMAL' does not figure in the scheme of things when it comes to self-governance bodies like Municipalities and Panchayats, which are left out from mundane, dirty, stinking, corrupt partisan politics by none other than the father of the nation called Mahatma Gandhi who died defending this criterion. Traditionally, the Goa Church has been against the BJP because of its communal programme, while it has been walking shoulder to shoulder with the corrupt and leprosy inflicted CONGRESS because it (Congress) professes that it is non-communal. But what the gullible catholic church of Goa has not realized is that the Congress is so badly infected that anyone coming close to it, let alone touching shoulders, is in peril. Example is of our CM Shri. stick to the chair at all costs Digamber Kamat. He stayed int the concentration camp of the BJP until he got suffocated. Then he came out sniffing the breath of fresh air in the Congress Camp. Never mind the ordinary gullible people of Goa, but the Catholic Church should have had some brains to check out what was given to it on the silver platter was not all gold and platinum. And therefore, if at all the Catholic Church in Goa has eyes below its forehead and eyes within its brains, it will do fine to give a wide berth to this loud mouth Ms. Mehra, who does not know what she is all about herself. She is nothing but a BJP doctrine motivated zombie sent to Goa to try its luck to sit on the throne that is GOA, which is prized by anyone and everyone, including the mundane ghatis who find Dubai across their borders when they have no hope in hell to see the actual Dubai in their miserable life-times. But it is not their fault. The fault lines lie in the New Delhi cauldron of mismanagement of which a very intelligent bureaucrat has been brainwashed to be a go-getter zombie for the down and out CONGRESS. which has outplayed its role as the mainstay of India. As far as GOA is concerted, India will have to prove its worth to hold it within its folds, the 50 golden years of liberated nonsense, notwithstanding. And hence, we Goons do not need half-baked, ideologues from yonder to come into Goa to break the coldest ICE for us. [Goanet] IN THAT CASE...........
IN THAT……… An Indian (Ramanlal) was traveling in a train in Pakistan , along with his pregnant wife(Shivangi). A few Pak army officers were also traveling in the same compartment. As everybody knows, the Pakis think they are a little too smart in their own country and also try to show their superiority in all aspects, they tried to act little smart and embarrass the Indian. They thought at the same time, it would be a good time-pass too. So, one of them (Iqbal) went and sat beside Ramanlal. Iqbal: Are you an Indian?. Ramanlal: Yes, I am. Iqbal: Is your wife pregnant? Ramanlal: Yes. Ramanlal was a bit annoyed by the question as it was obviously visible that his wife was pregnant and Iqbal still asked that question. But Ramanlal kept quiet. Iqbal: If it is a boy, what would you like him to be? Ramanlal: I'd make him a Software Engineer. Iqbal: What if it is a girl? Ramanlal: I'd make her a doctor. Now, Iqbal gave Ramanlal a naughty grin and said:- Iqbal: What if it is neither a boy nor a girl? Now the smart Indian (Ramanlal) realized the whole point. He realized that these officers were trying to embarrass him, so he decided to give it back to them. Ramanlal thought for a second, returned the same naughty smile back to the officer and said: Ramanlal: In that case, he will join the Pakistan army... Have a nice day. [Goanet] Secularism
From: Nascy Caldeira Since when does 'secular' mean 'equal'? And you call yourself a scientist, Santosh? ***Dear Nascy, Santosh does not know the meaning of secularism. No wonder, since with all his medical qualifications he does not know even the difference between remission and cure. Secularism means that life should be enriched by deep respect for human person, for human rights, equality of all people, breaking down barriers of class and caste. There is also separation between the Church and the State. The State should not interfere in the matters of the Church. The State respects all religions, all people, all human rights. There cannot be discrimination on the basis of creed, caste, class, gender. Secular does not mean that all cultures are equally good or that all religions are equally good. The term secularism was coined by George Holyoake in 1851. Regards. [Goanet] Choose your religion
This is in reply to Fr. Ivo's message that appeared in Goanet Digest, Vol 5, Issue 881, Message: 8, date: Fri, 20 Aug 2010 Fr. Ivo wrote: Jesus is the only true Incarnation of God. Before I comprehend your last 4 messages, please remove my ignorance by answering two of my queries w. r. t. your above mentioned message: You say Father and I are one. In this context, what does the word Father mean? Does it refer to priest, minister, vicar, member of the clergy or parent of a child. I always thought that Catholics are born Catholic - Christians like Hindu children are born Hindus! Now that you have enlightened the issue, my inquisitive nature prompts me to ask you If the child of the Catholic is not born as Catholic than by birth they are born as what? And in the interim i.e. a period between birth and before sacrament of Baptism they are known as what? Fr. [Goanet] All Religions cannot be equally good
From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@gmail.com --- On Thu, 8/19/10, Ivo icso...@bsnl.in wrote What is funny is that Santosh does not understand that according to the Constitution of India, alluded to by Mohan Singh, all religions are equal under the Law; therefore, all have to be equally respected. It does not mean that all religions are equally good. The above statement is pure nonsense. According to the Indian Constitution, as repeatedly interpreted by the Indian Supreme Court, all religions are equally good. ***Santosh is cutting and pasting material without being critical, as in the past he brought medical statistics without knowing the difference between remission and cure. The script is legal, published in Central India Law Quarterly. It was written by Justice Gulab Gupte, quoting the pronoucnements of the Supreme Court. What is the value of the statement? Certainly, legal--all religions are to be equally respected. It is not a value judgment. When he defines religion as all religions are equally good and efficacious pathways to perfection of God-realization, what does he mean by God-realization? As Santosh is repeating ad nauseam that there are a-theistic religions, how can they be efficacious pathways to perfection of God-realization? When there are oppressive ideologies in some religions (good and bad elements), how can they be equally good? When articles by religious people are cited on scientific issues with ethical repercussions, Santosh throws them to dustbin. In no.39, the Judge refers to rape and says: We must remember that a rapist not only violates the victims privacy and personal integrity, but inevitably causes serious psychological as well as physical harm in the process. Rape is not merely a physical assault, it is often destructive of whole personality of the victim. A murderer destroys the physical body of his victim, a rapist degrades the very soul (NOTICE VERY SOUL) of the helpless female. Why does Santosh not accept the concept of SOUL in the light of Science, when in fact, it is still controversial in the discussion of human consciousness? Now how can he accept uncritically what was said by one judge in a legal context? Does art.25 of the Indian Constitution give that reason? Article 25. (1). Subject to public order, morality and health and to the other provisions of this Part, all persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practise and propagate religion. Then how can we say that the Indian Constitution states that all religions are equally good? There are two explanations: Explanation I: The wearing and carrying of kirpans shall be deemed to be included in the profession of the Sikh religion. Explanation II: In sub clause (b) of clause reference to Hindus shall be construed as including a reference to persons professing the Sikh, Jaina or Buddhist religion, and the reference to Hindu religious institutions shall be construed accordingly. They refer to the external attire of the Sikh people. The term Hindus includes Sikh, Jaina, Buddhist, though they are different, opposing religions. Buddhism was a corrective of the popular Hindusim. These religions are either monotheistic or atheistic. If all religions are included, but Buddhism does not accept God (as Santosh goes on trumpeting. In fact, Dr.Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, our Babasaheb, himself was a Buddhist and fought against caste system, untouchability, polytheism), how can it be God-realization? How can monotheistic and polytheistic religions be equally good? Either there is one god, or many or no god. If there are eclectic religions, all cannot be equally good and means for God-realization. It is, therefore, a legal statement and means, as it is confirmed by the final statement of the Supreme Court, that It is, according to him, a positive concept of equal treatment of all religions. It is a statement concerning law and order, equality of religions before Law, not the intrinsic value of religions. Let Santosh be more critical and avoid blunders in the future on public Forum. Regards. Fr.Ivo ___ Please see the following excerpt from a scholarly article by Justice Gulab Gupte on the supreme law of the land in India, published in the Central India Law Quarterly: Art. 25 of the Constitutional creed is the bed-rock of secularism and is based on the belief that all religions are equally good and efficacious pathways to perfection of God-realizationIt is, according to him, a positive concept of equal treatment of all religions (Justice Gulab Gupte) Here is the link to the entire article - http://www.indiankanoon.org/cached/1736032/ Another example, where the Judge speaks of the Soul of the women. For example, the following statement is lifted verbatim from that article without placing it within quotes, and without giving Siddhartha credit. QUOTE The equality of all religions: Gandhi propagated the notion of Sarvadharma Samabhava, the equality of all religions. This is an important notion, particularly in a world where we are witnessing an increase in religious fundamentalism and religious conflict. Moreover, the funny thing is that what he has quoted from Gandhi vindicates the secular pluralistic position of both Gandhi and the Indian constitution, i.e. all religions are equal - equal before the law and equally good. ***Absolutely wrong. First of all, Santosh said that I had written texts without references. All references to Mahatma Gandhi's quotations have been given. Secondly, Mahatma Gandhi speaks of his preference for monotheism and refers to harmony. But just as men are all human in spite of their different names and forms, just as leaves of a tree though different as leaves are the same as the leaves of the same tree, all religions though different are the same. We must treat all religions as equals (Harijanbandhu, July 22, 1934). Gandhi says that they are different, but we must treat all religions as equals. He does not say that all religions are equally true and good. If any one says that all religions are equally true and good, s/he is mistaken. Let Santosh give me the right to interpret the right way, not the wrong way as he is subreptitiously doing, although he claims to be a great scientist. He should learn the meanings of plagiarism, contradiction, remission, cure, fact of empirical observation (remember that Santosh attributed to the Cardinal Cormack the statement that God is not real...). The Constitution of India does not says that all religions are equal, or equally good. 2. Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandi spoke always in the context of communal harmony: In his speech in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda said: I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee. 3. [Goanet] Roman Script – Our Human Right
ROMI LIPI ACTION FRONT c/o Rhythm House, Below City Hospital, Opp. Meenaxi Hotel Margao, Goa.403 601.Mob. 9822386579 Ref :RLAF/PRESS Date: 22.8.2010 Roman Script – Our Human Right On the 15th of August 2010, we observed the 64th Independence Day of India. The Independence Day of India, is indeed a day of celebration for all Indians. On this day, our nation was liberated from the British Colonialists, our British Masters for almost 200 years. The greatest gift of Liberation for us is the restoration of “Human Rights”. No more Suppression. No more Oppression. No more Masters. Each one , a Master of himself or herself. With Liberation we are all expected to receive freedom to think independently freedom to express independently without fear of anyone. But in reality, have we infact, received such “Freedom” ? Are we really free to think independently ? Are we really free to express ourselves independently ? Are we really free to choose decide for ourselves independently ? Or, do we still remain suppressed oppressed ? Is it that someone else , is still deciding for us ? Is it that through Independence, we have only changed our Masters ? Have the British Authoritarian Masters been replaced by our local Indian Authoritarian Masters ? Think for a while. Why do even such thoughts come to our mind ? The fact, that even after 64 years of Freedom , we still have to wonder if we are really free, speaks for itself. The very fact that such doubts are being expressed by the Common man in India , even today, means there is definitely a “hazy-picture’” out there. There is definitely something for all of us to think about. Exactly 14 years later, on the 19th 0f December 1961, a similar story of Liberation Independence was repeated in Goa . Goa was freed from the Portuguese Colonialists, our Portuguese Masters for more than 450 years. About 50 years have passed since then, and the common man in Goa still feels, nothing has changed for him, except his Masters. The Common man of Goa is still not free to think freely, express freely nor decide freely. Talking of expressing freely, I happen to be a living example of such suppression oppression by the so called local Goan Masters (The Ministers M.L.A s of Goa). I want to read write my mother tongue Konkani in the Roman Script. It is my wish , my right , and I don’t owe any explanation to any one , as to why I want the Roman Script. It is my basic human right to decide for myself, what is good for me. But my local Goan Authoritarian Masters will not allow me. I am not alone in this situation. Just like me , there are approximately 4 lakh Goans in Goa and another 4 lakh Goans outside Goa, who feel the same towards the Konkani in the Roman Script. Our Local Goan Masters in the Goa Legislative Assembly, without even considering the wishes of these Goans , passed a Bill in February of 1987 , to suppress oppress the common man of his freedom to read write Konkani in the Roman Script. Through this Bill of February 1987, they are telling us that we may continue using the Roman Script if we wish, but the Government of Goa, will at no point, support it. Through the same authoritarian Bill , these masters are telling us that our money ie. the Tax collected from us , will be used by them to develop someone else’s Script, but not our’s. Through the same Bill, these local Masters are telling us that even if we continue reading writing Books in the Roman Script , they will use the money collected from us to give Awards to Books written in the Devnagari Script to give grants to Schools teaching Konkani only in the Devnagari Script. These Authoritarian Masters have already started, to a large extent, using money collected from Roman Script users to tutor Government Servants in the Devnagari Script. In short , they are telling the 8 lakh users of Roman Script , “Get lost! You have no right to decide what’s good for you. You are second class citizens in Liberated Goa”. Is this not Oppression ? Is this not Suppression ? What difference has Liberation made to the lives of these 8 klakh Goans ? What freedom of expression have we 8 lakh Goans received ? How, then , can we say that we are free, in Independent Goa ? The irony of the situation is, that the remaining 10 lalkh Goans , who have no problem with the Devnagari Script, feel real sympathy for us , their brethren, but are afraid to speak out, for fear of angering their local Authoritarian Goan Masters. Yes, they are afraid of their , all powerfull Ministers M.L.A s of Goa. One really wonders then , what benefits have Goans received from Liberation ? No Freedom to think independently. No freedom to express independently. No right to decide or choose what’s good for them. The only difference they have seen , is a change of Masters However, there is always a ray of

[Goanet] All Religions cannot be equally good
From: Santosh Helekar chimbel...@gmail.com What has been discussed is that all religions cannot be equally good. The Constitution of India (art.25) announces equality of religions before the law. What Justice Gulab Gupte has said about the equality of religions before the law, hence no discrimination on the basis of religion, is correct. The explanation given in terms of God-realization is his personal opinion, it is not judicially held and therefore, it is not part and parcel of Law. Fr. Ivo is misrepresenting Justice Gulab Gupte. Here is Justice Gupte's quote again. Art. 25 of the Constitutional creed is the bed-rock of secularism and is based on the belief that all religions are equally good and efficacious pathways to perfection of God-realization. .Justice Gulab Gupte ***What is the meaning of God-realization? The statement of Justice Gupte is legal, not theological. Therefore, he cannot speak of all religions are equally good. The Father of the Constitution, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, would have waked up from the grave if he had heard this wrong interpretation. Dr.Ambedkar left Hindu religion and joined Buddhist religion precisely because they were not equally good. Let Santosh not repeat the blunder. Let him be critical as he is with all other statements, mostly wrongly. Justice Gupte has cited case after case as to how the supreme court has interpreted the constitution in this matter, upholding the tacit belief that all religions are equally good. **The reason given is his opinion. Certainly it is not acceptable to those who wrote the Indian Constitution. Please read Justice Gupte's entire article at the following link: http://www.indiankanoon.org/cached/1736032/ **I do not need to read it again. The context is that of the empowerment of women. The statement is legal, not theological. It is ultra vires, if it is pressed in that direction. Fr. Ivo has no knowledge of the Indian constitution, Indian law, and supreme court precedents and interpretations of the Indian constitution. **Neither Santosh has the required knowledge to interpret the texts of legal character, not even other texts in english. I may have dealt with such texts more than Santosh. He has misinterpreted the texts, the most notorious interpretation being that of Cardinal Cormack. He should not be arrogant, accept the blunder with humility. A scientist should be humble and not try to humiliate those who cannot agree with him on humpteen issues. I stand by what I have said. If that is the interpretation given by Justice Gupte as being official, then it is wrong. Even Dr.Ambedkar would have agreed with me. He is only a Catholic priest with knowledge of Christian theology. Please do not give any credence to his false understanding of Justice Gupte's quote in simple English. **Please, be not misled by the neuroscientist Santosh. I have already explained enough. I stand by what I have written. A Catholic priest is able to understand better than Santosh. It is his tactics to malign the writers who do not agree with him. Even in the scientific realm I am not standing by him on several issues. He stated that a 7th std. student knows more science than a Catholic priest who has studied Science at the College level... Even in scientific conclusions the reader should be careful while reading Santosh. He will never tackle the issues, but just try to put off the person. This is his cunning methodology... Regards. [Goanet] New bill for voting rights to NRIs introduced
New bill for voting rights to NRIs introduced New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS) The Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill 2010, which seeks to give voting rights to NRIs, was moved in the Rajya Sabha Saturday. Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily moved the bill after withdrawing its earlier version, the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2006. The older version of the bill was withdrawn on the recommendations of a parliamentary standing committee which examined the legislation. The new bill is more comprehensive and it will enable the NRIs to participate in the democratic process of the country, the law minister said introducing the bill. - Forwarded by Goan Cultural Centre-Kuwait. [Goanet] Medjugorje Visions Proven Not A Deception
Santosh wrote: The claims made about the so-called scientific studies in the links below are not credible from the neurophysiological standpoint. Electroencephalography (EEG) cannot tell us whether there is deception or not. It cannot also tell us whether there is self-deception or not. The purported scientific results in this case have not been published in any scientific journal. In fact, the scientist whose name is mentioned in these links has not published any research paper on EEG in general in the peer-reviewed medical scientific literature. ***For me this is a simplistic assessment given by an agnostic neuroscientist. Physicians have given their assessment. Santosh only denies them point blank. This is not scientific. Nobody says that scientifically it can be proven that it is the vision of Mary. But the pheonomena that are occurring cannot be discarded haphazardly. There is a study. There is no need to publish them, because this study is complex. It should not be submitted to people like Santosh. It needs to show that the supernatural vision is compatible with the scientific recording of the brain. The same problem occurred with Dr.Mario Beauregard, who studied themystical phenomena of Carmelite nuns, but Santosh dubbed him a pseudo-scientist. Do not trust Santosh who is deceiving the readers by simply denying whatever is supernatural as superstition. Nothing has been proved by him. As far as Medjugorge is concerned, there are only two brief letters referring to this place in the medical literature. Both of them have to do with damage to the eyes of some pilgrims caused by gazing at the sun for long periods of time, hoping to see the miraculous apparitions. **Only this is scientific. All the rest is hallucination... There are three approaches to the phenomenon: The first is atheistic, not accepting anything supernatural (that is the approach of our neuroscientist). This approach cannot be accepted, it denies the reality. The second approach is Christian: The scientific data are compatible with a supernatural apparition. The third approach is that of unknown forces. It does not have an explanation. Psychologists, scientists and theologians are studying. I expect the results. Anyway, it is unscientific to deny all with preconceived ideas, as Santosh is doing. Let us wait for the results! Regards. Re: [Goanet] All religions cannot be equal
Sandeep, Which statement of mine on Goanet are you responding to? The post you think you are responding to was not allowed to appear on Goanet. I guess the moderators decided that Goanetters did not deserve to read my side of the argument. I am hoping this response of mine will not be blocked like the previous one. So here goes. You have a basic misunderstanding of what I wrote, and what is meant by equality of religions, as it is understood by modern secular pluralism. Equality as understood by modern society does not mean identity. Otherwise, equality of all human beings would be a sham because no two human beings are identical. What I wrote is not my interpretation of the law. It is my statement of the credo of modern secular pluralism. No religion is better or superior to any other religion. No religion is worse or inferior to any other religion. In other words, all religions are equally good. The interpretation that this is also the bedrock creed of the Indian constitution, as interpreted by the supreme court is what Justice Gupte stated in the following quote: QUOTE Art. 25 of the Constitutional creed is the bed-rock of secularism and is based on the belief that all religions are equally good and efficacious pathways to perfection of God-realization. UNQUOTE ..Justice Gulab Gupte Please read Justice Gupte's entire article at the following link: http://www.indiankanoon.org/cached/1736032/ Having read a little bit about what exactly is meant by equality in modern thought, I can fully understand the sense in which Justice Gupte expounds that tacit belief inherent in article 25. The statements I have made regarding equality are my understanding of the extended notion of equality as it applies to modern secular society. As I said earlier, equality does not mean identity or even similarity. That is why I have used general non-specific terms such as good, bad, supernatural, rational and beneficial as parameters for comparison between religions. To know why, all one has to do is use an analogous statement whose validity no sensible, non-prejudiced person would deny today. This statement is: All races and ethnic groups are equally good. Now, does this mean that if you measure the crime rate, the incidence of sociopathy, the percentage of individuals behind bars, the percentage of corrupt individuals, etc., all their values would be equal across all races and ethnic groups? The answer to this question is demonstrably no. Different groups might have different values for these parameters. But it does not invalidate the above statement of equality. The reason for this is goodness is an overall balanced norm and an ideal that is shared by all normal humans regardless of race or ethnicity. The same is true with religion or lack thereof. If you don't agree with this, and your particular form of Indian secularism holds that all religions are not equally good then please answer my questions below: 1. Which religion according to you is the best? 2. Which religion is better - Hinduism or Christianity? 3. Which sect of Christianity is better than the rest? It is no good saying that one is better in one respect and another in another respect. Please give me a straightforward categorical answer based on your understanding of the norm of each religion or sect. Cheers, Santosh --- On Sun, 8/22/10, Sandeep Heble sandeephe...@gmail.com wrote: Santosh has misinterpreted the provisions of law and has drawn wrong conclusions. All it means is the State must adopt neutrality towards religions; that there must not be a State Religion, that it must not give preferential treatment to any one religion over the other; that all religions are equal before the

In the second match of the day, Duler Boys edged out Rawda Challengers 4-1 in the tie breaker. I do not understand what this chap is trying to say! The british paid attention to cities only. So did the Portuguese. There is no dire poverty in Goa because Goans have stepped across their shores to make a living. Those who stay behind benefit from the remittances of these Goans. Literacy may have increased in statistical terms but what is the quality. Democray is used as a means to corrupt and in terms of depth has now gone to 12 feet. Infrastructure hardly works. Stop the brainwashing of Goans! BC Now as regards development of Goa from 1961 onwards-it presently has the third highest per capita income of Rupees 1,06,000,just behind Delhi and Chandigarh. There is no dire poverty in Goa, as we know it, as compared to the rest of India.Portugal did not invest adequately in Goa's infrastructure-the British did pay attention to India's infrastructure * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
