The rise of the Ikkeri Nayakas, first as viceroys of the Vijayanagara Empire, then as one of its successor regimes, saw a new concentration of power in the western part of today's Karnataka state, as well as a new beginning for architectural patronage, the results of which have hardly been studied or documented so far. The central idea discussed in the conclusion is that of the politics of architectural revivalism, seen in the designs, design sources, and varying heterogeneity of both the temples, which appears to have been related to the political and economic developments of the time. [Goanet-News] NEWS: Pope announces the creation of 24 new cardinals
Wuerl and Burke among 24 new cardinals - consistory is set for Nov. 20 in Rome. NCR, Oct. 20, 2010 By John L Allen Jr http://ncronline.org/news/wuerl-and-burke-among-24-new-cardinals Pope Benedict XVI today announced the creation of 24 new cardinals, including two Americans: Archbishops Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., and Raymond Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican’s supreme canonical court. Twenty of the new cardinals are under the age of 80, and thus eligible to vote for the next pope. A consistory, the event in which new members formally enter the College of Cardinals, is set for Nov. 20 in Rome. It will be the third consistory of Benedict’s papacy, after previous editions in March 2006 and November 2007. All told, Benedict XVI has now appointed 50 of the roughly 120 cardinals who will elect his successor. Another American destined eventually to become a cardinal, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, was not on the list because his predecessor, Edward Egan, is still under 80. A number of cardinals-to- be in other major archdioceses did not make the cut for the same reason, including the archbishops of Westminster, Rio de Janeiro, Toledo, Utrecht, and Brussels. One surprise omission was Archbishop Thomas Collins of Toronto, Canada, who was widely expected to be on the list. At 63, however, there's plenty of time for Collins to be named in a future consistory. Eight of the new voting-age cardinals are Italians, which means that the Italian share of cardinal-electors will rise from 17 percent at present to 20 percent as of Nov. 20, fully one-fifth of the electorate for the next pope. Some analysts will read today’s nominations as another chapter in the “re-Italianization” of the government of the church under Benedict XVI, especially since seven of the eight new Italian cardinals hold senior Vatican positions. Half of the new cardinals named today are Vatican officials, meaning that there are now forty current or former Vatican officials among those under 80, representing one-third of the electorate for the next pope. Just seven of the twenty new cardinal-electors come from outside Europe and the United States, so the composition of the College of Cardinals will continue to some extent to not reflect the distribution of the global Catholic population. Two-thirds of the Catholics in the world today live in the global South, but only one-third of Benedict’s new cardinals are from the southern hemisphere. Prior to today’s nominations, 102 of 179 living cardinals were electors. Benedict XVI is determined to honor the tradition, set by Pope Paul VI, of capping the number of cardinal-electors at 120. Four of today’s new cardinals are considered “honorary” appointments, meaning cardinals already over the age of 80 and hence given the red hat largely to honor their service to the church. Archbishop Medardo Joseph Mazombwe from Zambia is almost an honorary appointment himself, since he is already retired as the Archbishop of Lusaka will turn 80 next September. The new cardinals are, in the order Benedict announced their names: 1. Angelo Amato (Italy), Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints 2. Antonio Naguib (Egypt), Patriarch of the Coptic Church of Alexandria 3. Robert Sarah (Guinea), President of Cor Unum 4. Francesco Monterisi (Italy), Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul 5. Fortunato Baldelli (Italy), head of the Apostolic Penitentiary 6. Raymond Burke (United States), Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura 7. Kurt Koch (Switzerland), President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity 8. Paolo Sardi (Italy), Pro-Patron of the Order of Malta 9. Mauro Piacenza (Italy), Prefect of the Congregation for Clergy 10. Velasio De Paolis (Italy), President of the Prefecture of Economic Affairs for the Holy See 11. Gianfranco Ravasi (Italy), President of the Pontifical Council for Culture 12. Medardo Joseph Mazombwe (Zambia), retired Archbishop of Lusaka 13. Raul Eduardo Vela Chiriboga (Ecuador), Archbishop of Quito 14. Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya (Democratic Republic of Congo), Archbishop of Kinshasa 15. Paolo Romeo (Italy), Archbishop of Palermo 16. Donald Wuerl (United States), Archbishop of Washington 17. Raymundo Damasceno Assis (Brazil), Archbishop of Aparecido 18. Kazimierz Nycz (Poland), Archbishop of Warsaw 19. Albert Malcom Ranjith (Sri Lanka), Archbishop of Colombo 20. Reinhard Marx (Germany), Archbishop of Munich The four over-eighty “honorary” cardinals are: 1. Elio Sgreccia (Italy), former president of the Pontifical Academy for Life 2. Jose' Manuel Estepa Llaurens (Spain), of the Military Ordinariate 3. Walter Brandmüller (Germany), former head of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Science 4. Domenico Bartolucci (Italy), former Maestro of the Sistine Chapel * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Talking Photo: Viswajit's fate lies in here http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk31/5098525687/sizes/l/ Vishwajit Rane, s/o Goa Assembly Speaker PratapSingh Rane (71) is a Health minster in Dingambar’s Govt (Cong/NCP/MGP coalition govt) Viswajit or the Health Minister is not an MLA or Member of Legislative assembly. He was an MLA but resigned only to get re-elected and off course at our expense His resignation costing us about 60 lakhs – the cost of bye-election Elections were held on 18th Oct. and the vote counting /results are on 21st October, 2010 (Remember it's DRY DAY all of Panjim) What will happen to the Health Minister if he loses? Well, in an unlikely situation if he loses then he may still continue as Health Minister until X'Mas eve i,e, 24/12/10 Technically, I think he should step down on 21st Oct itself. Why Viswajeet is a Minister when he is not an MLA? Is it because he is the son of Speaker Rane? Not really. For that matter, anyone can become a minster for upto 6 months during which time one must get himself/herself elected. I think, when Indira Gandhi died early 80s, her son Rajiv Gandhi immediately sworn In as Prime Minister. Rajiv then was an active youth congress leader but was not an MP. joego...@yahoo.co.uk for Goa NRI related info... http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/GOAN-NRI/ For Goan Video Clips http://youtube.com/joeukgoa In Goa, Dial 1 0 8 For Hospital, Police, Fire etc

[Goanet] Remembering Goa's Melody King - Alfred Rose
Dear Readers Tomorrow on the 21st of October 2010 we mark the 7th death anniversary of the one and only Melody King of Goa - Alfred Rose. Although he is not with us today, his golden voice still remains on records, cassettes and CD's for generations to come. Alfred Rose was known as The Man with the Golden Voice (courtesy His Master's Voice Recording Company). As a child when I watched the Tiatr's in Bombay, I can still remember the whistling clapping when people saw him entering the stage. His voice echoed in my ears even after I returned home. Alfred Rose sang thousands of songs and unfortunately nobody has got an exact count. His songs are loved by thousands of fans who are not only in India but also worldwide. His songs always had a special message, be it a slow melody or a fast number. There have been many events organized in his memory such as musical shows talent contests. Tiatr Academy of Goa has sponsored a couple of Alfred Rose musical shows recently. Last year on the occasion of his 6th death anniversary, I had made the www.alfredrose.com website public. There have been more than 2000 hits so far and I have received a lot of emails from fans worldwide thanking me for the website. Unfortunately, the website did not get updated for almost 10 months due to time and certain technical limitations. However, this year on the 21st of October 2010, his fans will see a new face of the website. Photos that have never been seen before. From here on the website will be updated regularly. There will be videos and audio added soon too. Thereafter, a Facebook group was created by one of his fans Augusto Lucas Morais and also administered by our very own Edward Verdes. There are 384 members as of today including Engelbert Rose and Alria Rose. I have been singing only Alfred Rose songs at events for which I have performed so far and many of those who hear me say that I sing / sound like him. I really appreciate the compliments but I only have to say that Alfred Rose will always remain the one and only Melody King of Goa. Please join me in remembering Alfred Rose on his 7th death anniversary please do not forget to visit www.alfredrose.com on 21st October 2010 and experience the new face given to the website. Best Wishes Agnelo Fernandes

NEWS from Arusha - Tanzania: The Goans Of Arusha (GOA) has started konkani classes to the Goan Community of Arusha under the guidance of Sebastiao Fernandes (AKA Seby Fernandes). In the history of Arusha this is something which we never thought would happen, but it did and we are glad that we finally started. The first class took place on the 1st of October 2010 with 25 students. On a regular basis we have on an average of 23 students from different age levels so far and we hope that it grows. Very soon we intend to give guitar classes. Both these classes will help the community in the future, to participate in events, in and out of Arusha. In the recently concluded 6th East African Goan Convention in Mombassa-Kenya, Seby wrote and directed his first konkani play called Download and also translated the song Country Roads literally into konkani check the following link 6EAGC Ray Travas Chairman of Goans of Arusha Trust http://www.goarusha.com/
[Goanet] Lion Roars - Consultancy, the money spinner
The Ghost Who Walks The contract for the colossal new Collectorate building being built at Margao was tendered in December 2007 at a cost of Rs 73,46,34,449. It won’t be ready in June 2010 as scheduled but in December and the cost has already escalated to Rs 77.50 cr which was expected. In fact, already the next projected cost is Rs 93 cr. It will soar (to Rs 100 cr perhaps?) and will go down as the most expensive ever built in Goa. And for what realistic purpose was it built? So that some government babu can harass you even more as you blunder from one floor to another looking for the chap who just stepped out for his umpteenth cup of chai? The government won’t give a Panchayat the talathi it deserves but it will blow Rs 100 cr on a new Collectorate building. A case in point is the Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Village Panchayat’s talathi who also holds charge of the Velsao-Pale-Issorcim VP which means he comes to work only Mondays and Thursdays at Velsao. Because the Boss Man, the Mamlatdar of Mormugo, wants him there at Vasco da Gama, his base station, every now and then, the poor chap has become like The Phantom -The Ghost Who Walks; for no fault of his. In this case the government gets really mean. To make you go through the pain of a FIIXV, it divided the three villages of Velsao VP between two Mamlatdars. Yes, there is a Mamlatdar and two joint Mamlatdars. Machiavellian? I thought so too. Consultancy, the money spinner 1) The cost of civil works including plumbing, fire fighting and internal electrical works (at the Rs 93 cr level) is an estimated Rs 73,46,34,449 and the consultancy fee (i.e architectural and project management consultancy) is Rs 4,02,57,968. 2) The external electrical work will cost Rs 2,11,49,474 and the consultancy fee is Rs 11,58,991. 3) The cost of the internal, external and special lighting fixtures is Rs 74,40,000 and strange but true, the consultancy fee is Rs 4,07,712. In other words the consultancy fee for items 2 3, both electrical jobs, itself works out to Rs 15,66,703 plus there already is an unknown consultancy fee for internal electrical works factored into item 1 (see above). 4) The elevator work will cost Rs 2,77,00,000 and the consultancy fee is Rs 15,17,960. 5) Air-conditioning the complex will cost Rs 1,93,02,803 and the consultancy fee is Rs 10,57,794. 6) The cost of the telephone exchange and UPS will be Rs 1,33,40,845 and believe it or not the consultancy fee is Rs 7,31,078. 7) The audio visual equipments for the conference room and AV room will cost Rs 44,00,000 and the consultancy fee for this is Rs 2,41,120. 8) The furniture will cost Rs 5,23,29,550 and lo and behold the consultancy fee for this is Rs 28,67,659. 9) There is a miscellaneous cost of Rs 2,32,000 and mercifully they didn’t need a consultant to tell them that. The magic figure at this moment is Rs 92,87,69,403 and the dice is still being rolled. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder You have by now begun to understand the current Cabinet’s compulsive obsession for big buildings and decided to live with it. That much is clear. But it boggles the mind when in a total cost of Rs 88,05,29,121 the consultancy fee works out Rs 4,82,40,282 and is growing. Now figure out the maintenance and other support costs of this monolith and notch that up as one more record that will be set by Goa’s most expensive building yet. And in your village meanwhile the streetlights don’t work, the narrow village roads are potholed, you are forced to buy your own expensive UPS because the power supply is as inconsistent as the figures above. Worse, you won’t be invited to the gala opening of the Collectorate knowing well that will also cost you a small fortune. And in villages a few people continue to clean up the beaches which hordes of domestic tourists dirty for the good of the tourism industry. And yet on September 21, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat flew all the way to Delhi with a delegation to convince the Information Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni not to pull the rug from under the Entertainment Society of Goa. Her ministry wants to reduce the Entertainment Society of Goa’s role in hosting this year’s International Film Festival of India for all the right reasons. But the Goa government can’t have that, can it, considering its other obsession is IFFI; and all the tax-free perks of a good life that go with organizing it? Proof of its fascination is in the very timing of his visit, made when Delhi was in a flap over Jammu Kashmir under its worse siege ever and the Commonwealth Games about to go kaput. Life goes on. Battle of the Bulge The Navy’s growing a belly. You wouldn’t expect the Navy to get the acquisition bug too. A long time ago, the Navy locked down the old road to popular Bogmolo beach. It really hurt because you could cycle down to Bogmolo from Vasco da Gama. It was all done for a sacred cause, blah, blah. All the while, the Navy only employed more men and lost more aircraft, nothing else. The Navy is

Police Porjek? Congratulations to Dy.S.P. Sammy Tavares for the Release of his first Konkani Album 'Police Porjek'.The lyrics of the Album is of very high quality and all the songs are on very important topics of our life. In reality, are the Police for the Common man?Does the Goa Police not controlled by the politicians in Power?I totally agree,in one of the songs ,Sammy says,Police are human too and the Police department have produced really good Officers in the name of Allan D'sa,Bosco George,Sammy Tavares himself etc. The people of Goa are really not happy the way Police handled the Atala case which is of very serious nature, wherein a PI was also arrested. The people of Goa were also not happy with the transfer of Dy S.P. Bosco George when he was doing a good job in the Narcotics department. Hope the Goa Police department learn something from the Album Titled 'Police Porjek ' and win the faith of decent common people. [Goanet] MOST SHAMELESS GOANS OF ALL TIMES.
Dear Goanetters, These two opinions by Plasino D'costa and Dr Pradeep Kamat respectively are amongst the best articles that appeared on Heraldo in recent years. http://oheraldo.in/newscategory/Opinions/14 Rajendra Wanted leaders with humility Stop calling them ‘honourable leaders’, call them ‘humble servants’ says PLASTINO D’COSTA If anybody watched Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli play for their school in their early teens, or for that matter practice at the nets of Bombay’s Azad Maidan, and if one had to predict who would be the more successful of the two, without a doubt most would select Vinod Kambli. Such was the dominance of Vinod that it was very obvious that even if both played for the country, Kambli would be the more successful of the two. That said, their brand of cricket was so special that it kept most commuters on foot, shuttling between Victoria Terminus and Churchgate stations and using the Azad Maidan shortcut opposite the Bombay Gymkhana, always spellbound and awestruck. That usually meant these commuters would be missing connecting trains, losing sales calls, delaying appointments and unable to reach their destinations on time. But there was no denying the fact Vinod was always the more belligerent and promising. Today if Vinod honestly reflects as to why his career did not take off on expected lines, among other follies, arrogance and flamboyance would have had something to do with it. Of course there were lost opportunities, injuries that played spoilsport for Vinod, but the major difference between an average career for Vinod and a great career for Sachin was arrogance versus humility. Cricket is a performance oriented sport; you perform or perish. The system although tainted at the moment, on match fixing allegations, is designed to measure performance based on the runs you make or the wickets you take. Having talent helped, but eventually it was Sachin’s humility that played a part in him becoming the greatest cricketer of all time. Great people are generally humble and competent modern systems are generally designed to reward humble people. Arrogant leaders might have led dictatorial states in the past, by keeping their citizens fearful of everything around them, but those kind of dictators have no place in a democratic setup, specially if there is a strong and transparent media presence. Strong media presence with a combination of educated citizens who are able to decipher actual news vis-à-vis fake, is one combination most arrogant leaders are unable to manipulate and eventually meet their fate. The arrogance of Republican George Bush Jr. is the reason Democrat Barack Obama became the President of the United States. Of course economic meltdown helped. In a generally democratic world where arrogance is usually punished, how come Goa has not found a way of showing the door to its arrogant leaders? We can tolerate them for one term maximum, but the public have a chance to rectify their mistake when they appear for a re-election. Have we got so used to arrogant leaders around us, who go to the extent of playing politics over a pothole or a streetlight? Why do we give these leaders so much control of our lives? There are instances where our leaders do the most corrupt and immoral things in the afternoon and on the same day lecture their citizens on morality over a toast raising ceremony at some evening reception party. Our inability to speak freely and make up our own mind has seriously jeopardized our thinking ability. The more the processes, licenses, and permissions you need from leaders, the more they show you who is boss and an arrogant one at that. Great leaders usually provide solutions to a problem that might arise in their work area. In Goa most leaders create the problem, so that they are automatically called upon to be part of the solution. Lousy leaders usually thrive on chaos, the more the chaos the more they control the population. This is the reason leaders loathe smart and efficient systems, because it threatens their leadership and might render them obsolete. Great leaders are usually never insecure of their leadership; their thumb rule is to usually have subordinates that are smarter than them. That gives them an edge as a team, to perform better and stay ahead in the race. That also makes sure the leader is always humble and listening to smart advice from his subordinates. Lot of Goan leaders are seen promoting their offspring into the political arena, nothing wrong with that, but are any Goan leaders ready to listen to ideas from their offspring, for that matter is any offspring ready to point out the mistakes of their political parents? Narayan Murthy’s highly qualified children can change their names, walk into Infosys premises and get selected for a job based on their merit. Infosys as a policy till date has not encouraged offspring taking over management, because the organization is beyond

[Goanet] Ethics Needed
I concur with the views of Juliano Baptista (Ethics Needed - Letter below on 20th Oct 10 - Heraldo). If indeed the worse happens and we lose our beautiful State and our Identity, Goans in generally will only have only themselves to blame and they will reap as they sow. The same lethargy and complacency is also generally seen amongst most Overseas Goan community; busy socializing, organizing dances, bickering amongst themselves etc with no care whatsoever and absolutely no voice/action, to the serious Crisis Goa is facing today. Leave alone doing nothing, whats even worse is that some of them even glorify the corrupt politicians on overseas trips for selfish reasons!! -Arwin Mesquita, UAE. http://www.oheraldo.in/newscategory/Letters/13 Ethics needed Juliano Baptista, Cortalim Despite the call from the GBA barely 300 turned up in Panjim to protest the Government’s dilly dallying over RP2021. People of Goa do not deserve the efforts of Village groups and the GBA. After whining about all our problems we vote the same rogues into power. The social workers who put hours of tireless work are branded as ‘opposers of progress and development’. The problem with us is we believe that anything illegal becomes legal as soon as we benefit from it. We put public welfare way down the pecking order. No one says do not make money, but money must be made with the application of proper ethics.

[Goanet] Kisan Swaraj Yatra in GOA: Action on 20 October at Margao Farm
Fwding this message - Our famous organically grown Agasaim Brinjals are being genetically modified in Digu's backyard in Margao. :( What next? Roger -- Forwarded message -- From: Miguel Braganza Dears The Kisan Swaraj Yatra that began on Gandhi Jayanti in the land of his birth, will end at the Rajghat in Delhi on 11 December, 2010 after awakening the nation through rallies in 20 states over 71 days. On 20 October morning, the Yatris and activists of Goenchea Xetkaramcho Ekvott as well as members of the Organic Farming Association of India [OFAI] gathered outside the Krishi Vigyan Kendra [KVK], an ICAR-funded extension office managed by the Goa Directorate of Agriculture at Margao Farm next to Rajendra Prasad stadium and the track of the Sky-Train. The Training Organizer, Shri P.P. Kumbhare, was not in office and so the Subject Matter Specialists [SMS], Shri Babal S. Prabhu Malkarnekar and Shri Pandit, had to listen to the protest by the activists who shouted against the KVK over-stepping its mandate and doing research trials. They also protested against the connivance in the stealing of a local Goan variety of Brinjal Agasaim to create the Event [technical jargon for Genetically Modified version of a known cultivated crop variety or cultivar ] GO-112.The seniormost SMS agreed to convey the message to the head of the KVK when he resumed duty. Yesterday, the KSY Yatris and villagers of Dulapi went in a procession/Morcha from Dulapi to SYNGENTA's Santa Monica Plant . About 120 farmers and citizens from Dulapi village under the banner of Dulapi Nagrik Kruti Samiti, braved the rains to make their voice heard at the Syngenta gate in Corlim, amidst tight police security. They then went to ICAR-Goa, Ela Farm, Old Goa, where Dr. N.P. Singh, Director of ICAR Research Centre for Goa, briefed the Yatris on the steps taken by ICAR to promote organic farming in Goa and to boost the crop yields in consultation with the small and marginal farmers. He lamented that the Directorate of Agriculture does not consult the ICAR on agricultural techniques while framing its policy and schemes. He also categorically stated that the KVK-North Goa, under the control of ICAR was not involved in the Bt Brinjal trials in Goa earlier this year. He agreed that the KVK do not have a research mandate, which is the sole responsibility of ICAR's research stations and State Agriculture Universities [SAUs]. He stated that Goa needs a SAU. [Goanet] Spin Doctors? I am not sure ...
Folks, I have been reading the debate on the nexus between big pharma and some of the physicians with much amusement. The initial kick was made with a simple link that implied that there may be a nexus between the pharmaceutical companies and the physicians who prescribe the medications these companies manufacture. Well, a link provided below connects you to a database that you can search in to locate any doctor in the US by name (whether partial name, or first name or last name - it does not matter), the system will pull out his/her details along with how much money he/she received and why it was paid. The database was compiled by a non-profit named 'ProPublica' that claims to deal with stories of public interest. On its website, ProPublica writes that drug companies have long kept secret details of the payments they make to doctors for promoting their drugs. But seven companies have begun posting names and compensation on the Web, some as the result of legal settlements. ProPublica compiled these disclosures, totaling $258 million, into a single database that allows patients to search for their doctor. Receiving payments isn’t necessarily wrong, but it does raise ethical issues. Hit on the link below and see if any of your doctors received any of the stash. None of our doctors - our family doctor, my wife's gynecologist nor my kids pediatrician accepted any money. If any one of them did accept, I'd drop them off in a jiffy, regardless of why he/she took the money. http://projects.propublica.org/docdollars Jim F New York.
[Goanet] Wanted leaders with Humility
Wanted Leaders with Humility By Plastino D'Costa If anybody watched Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli play for their school in their early teens, or for that matter practice at the nets of Bombay's Azad Maidan, and if one had to predict who would be the more successful of the two, without a doubt most would select Vinod Kambli. Having talent helped, but eventually it was Sachin's humility that played a part in him becoming the greatest cricketer of all time. Narayan Murthy's highly qualified children can change their names, walk into Infosys premises and get selected for a job based on their merit. Infosys as a policy till date has not encouraged offspring taking over management, because the organization is beyond petty power struggles. Arrogance is killed at the doorstep of Infosys and that makes them the most humble organization always geared towards customer service. Google founders Sergei Brin and Larry Page found themselves too young and inexperienced to run day to day affairs of the

Do you know that CECO Circulating Library in Mapusa will be shut soon. It used to be one of the two main ones that were very popular in the 70's and 80's (Shabbir's was the other). I used to frequent them in those days but then I lost touch. Shabbir's closed down long ago, and now it seems people's book habits have reduced so drastically that they are not capable of sustaining these libraries. They are disposing off many of their books for about Rs 40 - 50. Much of it is pulp fiction, but there may be some things that you are looking for. For the younger readers there are a lot of Nancy Drews and Hardy Boys and Louis L'Amore and such like stuff; as well as comics and magazines. So it might be worth paying them a visit. Re: [Goanet] Spin Doctors? I am not sure ...
Jim is quite right in drawing attention to the nexus between Unscrupulous doctors and Big Pharma. Goanetters will surely remember that there are Goan doctors on this list (yours truly included) who do NOT accept any paid speaking engagements, trips, lunches or even trinkets (like pens) and samples from pharma companies. There has been debate about why doctors should turn down 'samples' when those could be useful for poor patients. I do not buy that. In any event, the health system, in the country I practice in, covers the medications for indigent patients. A new program has also been started to provide free medications for ALL patients with chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes and hypertension. These can be picked up even at private pharmacies. Coming back to the 'nexus' that Jim talks about, I'd venture to say that NO self-respecting and accomplished physician will ever sell his soul for the pieces of silver. and I can assure you that no (non-Goa based) GoaNet doctor who is involved in this debate is likely to be on any such list. BUT . each person can speak for himself or herself. I am a full subscriber of the No-Free-Lunches movement. I do NOT accept anything from Pharma companies never will. And yes, if I do attend a pharma-sponsored lecture, I have my breakfast, lunch or dinner at home before or after the event. Now Goa and non-Goa based doctors can lay their practice and position on the table. It might be worth knowing that Pharma companies did not publicise the names of these unscrupulous doctors voluntarily. One of the first US State legislatures to enact legislation mandating this was Vermont http://www.leg.state.vt.us/docs/2010/bills/Passed/S-048.pdf Now here are links you may have seen before from me. [Goanet] Miracle workers
*CHILE** Meticulous rescue operation and loads of luck save 33 trapped Chilean miners By Jacob K. Philip* It was a mission destined to be a success. Los 33—a nickname the miners who were trapped at a depth of 2,040 feet in the San Jose mine in the dusty hills of the Atacama desert in Chile called themselves—should be the ones chosen by God. That is the most sensible explanation for all the numerous things that fell into place in one of the most difficult rescue operations ever. The chain of miracles started the moment 7,50,000 tonnes of rock rolled down to seal the entrance of the mine on August 5. It was lunchtime and all 33 men were together. Had the disaster struck moments earlier or later, they would have been at job, scattered along the tunnels. Some of them might have died instantly. The second miracle was one of them—shift supervisor Luis Urzua. He turned out to be a real leader, someone just made for such a situation. Urzua led the group in the pitch darkness to a ventilation shaft. They found the ladder and began climbing up, only to find that there were no steps after 500 feet. Not losing courage, they headed for the shelter made for trapped miners. Many of the mine’s galleries were intact and so were some vehicles. They removed the batteries to provide light and power. Then they used diggers to excavate for water. Water, too, sprang up, enough to drink, wash and clean. They dug latrines, with natural springs washing away the waste. Another natural spring was used for showering. There was milk, tuna, peach and biscuits in the chamber. The stock would not have lasted beyond 48 hours, had not Urzua imposed strict rationing—two spoonfuls of tuna, a sip of milk, a biscuit and a morsel of peach every 48 hours. Then began the long wait for the saviours to come. In the 17 long days followed, each of these 33 men tuned out to be an invaluable resource. Raul Bustos, a hydraulics engineer, had worked on the water supply system in the mine and without him they would not have struck water. Jose Henriquez, who was an evangelical preacher, gave unrelenting spiritual strength and hope. Yonni Barrios’s years of experience in helping his diabetic mother made him a general medical adviser to his colleagues. Jimmy Sanchez, 19, was the whiz-kid around and he checked the mine’s temperature and humidity daily. While the miners clung to hope, 2,000 feet above them the frantic efforts to locate them seemed to be reaching nowhere, till Macarena Valdes, the topographer of the search team, decided to rely on her hunch. “It was like using a shotgun to hit a mosquito at 700 metres,” she said. When probes after probes failed to find the mark, Valdes thought of one degree correction they were applying to the angle recommended by geologists to adjust for vibration. And for the next drill, she decided to stick to the original angle. The drill came back with a note tied at the end: “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33 (We are fine in the refuge, all 33 of us).” The rescue operation cost about $22 million. The extensive use of technology began with the supply of essentials into the shelter. Food, medicine and clothes were sent down through a five-inch-diameter shaft. Thanks to optical fibre technology, audio and video links were easily established. Each miner got about 2,200 calories a day, as rescuers did not want them to become too big for the escape pod. The Chilean government reached out to NASA for advice on how to construct the pod used to haul them to the surface. Twenty NASA engineers brainstormed to design the 14-foot high rescue capsule, called Phoenix. The 54cm-wide capsule, which was pulled up along the 66cm-wide hole, was equipped with oxygen supply, communication system, a harness that monitored the occupant’s vital signs and a drop-through escape hatch that would allow a miner to descend back to the bottom if something went wrong. Nothing went wrong, and Phoenix ferried all 33 miners, one at a time, to the surface. http://week.manoramaonline.com/cgi-bin/MMOnline.dll/portal/ep/theWeekContent.do?BV_ID=@@@contentType=EDITORIALsectionName=TheWeekCurrent EventsprogramId=1073754900contentId=8085701
Re: [Goanet] Science of Manipulations
From: Bosco D bos...@canada.com Let me keep it simple: All the links in the world are not going to give your story any credibility unless the links are current and from a credible source. I suggest you stop forwarding more links because all the links you have provided thus far have bogus information on aspartame. **You are right, Bosco. But why to stop giving links. Precisely you have to assess the value of the links. But what you call scientific can be the result of power and politics... That is the risk. Today there is so much pressure of the multinational companies of which the scientists become a prey... I see Fr. Ivo has passed on a link from an October edition of Oxygen. Which October might this have been?? 15-20 years ago, perhaps?? Or further back in time?? **It was in October 1999. But the controversy still continues... Today there is no consensus among the scientists. Ajinomoto Co. has produced monosodium glutamate (MSG), aspartame and glutamine. The controversy is going on about these products. But most people, who know about it, will avoid it. Some may not know it and use it. Since it is controversial, physicians think that it should be avoided, and people should be advised not to take it and not to give it to their children. I am always amused when I encounter people who use Google as their source of information devoid of everything else. This one is even more amusing because of the suggestion to use 'advanced Google'... **Today this is the blessing of technology that we have been offerred. Students prepare their assignments with a lot of Internet material. Sometimes books are not available. In the past we used to read encyclopedias when specific books were not available. I have read articles in international reviews on the basis of website links. There are articles, ebooks, newspapers news about every subject under the sun. It is up to the user to assess the standard of the material, as we do with the books. Sometimes it is the worth of the author himself. Any material has to be discussed with a critical sense. When there is a controversy, the arguments for and against have to be analysed. When there are two opposing views, we have to be careful to follow what is not harmful for our health and life. It is better to avoid than to use it with its harmful effects. Regards. Fr.Ivo

[Goanet] NEWS: Pope announces the creation of 24 new cardinals
Domenico Bartolucci (Italy), former Maestro of the Sistine Chapel
[Goanet] Ethics Needed
Sadly, Ethics are now extinct in Goa. Goans are now citizen of Free Indian, a new resurrecting India. Where Money speaks all the languages (except Konkani). Goans want to get rich and get rich fast not tomorrow but today by hook or crook. We are busy celebrating our culture and tradition in every Conner of the world. We sing and dance Konkani all over the over the world. And all this to preserve and promote our culture and tradition. Our culture and tradition will survive when we pass it on to our children and children's to thier children's. How Goans will survive if we sell our land to non-Goans. Imagine Goa without Goans. What relevance it will have to our so called culture and tradition when we sell and dig our land for others. We are missing the key element in our celebration of 'GOA'. Goa will survive as Brand Goa for years to come. But, it will be someone else's Goa not Goa of Goans . People who sell their land do think they got lot of money in return. What they do not realize they the lost their right forever. A True Farmer knows the value of land, sadly there aren't many farmers left in Goa. Piece of advise to all, DO NOT SELL YOUR LAND. [Goanet] NEWS: Opening up Goans' family archives -- Savia Viegas has collected over 100 Goan family photos dating from 1880-1961, mining albums for anthropological insights, writes Mahithi Pillay
Opening up Goans' family archives Savia Viegas has collected over 100 Goan family photos dating from 1880-1961, mining albums for anthropological insights, writes Mahithi Pillay Mahithi Pillay Young Martha Rodrigues stares back at you from a photo that smells of mothballs and nostalgia. You marvel at the casual beauty of the picture — the tulle veil framing the bride's face and the offhand charm of groom Hermano, gloves clasped in his hands. Both look every bit a newly-wed couple in the perfectly-composed, yet oddly-timed photo. At a time when photographs were a luxury, Martha (now 85) convinced Hermano to get the picture taken, months after their wedding. Two-months pregnant, she had posed for the photo with her dress open at the back, leaving behind a suitable anecdote to fill the silence at family gathering with laughter. The picture is part of 52-year-old art historian Savia Viegas' 100-strong collection of photos of Goan families, from the year 1880 till Goa's liberation in 1961. The idea of archiving and analysing photographs had come to Viegas seven years ago, during her research year as a Fulbright scholar in the United States. In Mumbai, a year later, Viegas helped the varsity start a degree course in heritage management. However, infrastructural shortcomings at the city college where she worked soon took a toll on her. Disillusioned, Viegas applied for a three-year fellowship at the ministry of culture which covered new areas in sociology. Through her proposal titled 'Family Archive', she hoped to mine the visual details that exist in family photographs. Viegas got the fellowship and was soon on a reverse pilgrimage back to her native Goan village of Carmona. Armed with a Canon Rebel camera and her battered Maruti 800, Viegas literally barged into Goan homes, demanding to see their albums. And Goa being the way it is, she says, it opened its doors, and its albums, for her benefit. Story in the picture Viegas explains that photography piggybacked to India for colonial purposes, a year after its invention in 1839. Besides imperial photographers, travelling photographers were responsible for a large number of family photos that Viegas found. These photos tended to be different from the ones shot by the Empire's photographers. In order to archive the photos, Viegas used to shoot them in situ, take a close-up, or, if necessary, take the photo to the studio for a digital print. Of the many memorable stories her research yielded, Viegas remembers an elderly woman who happily brought out her family collection, yet visibly stiffened when asked about her wedding photograph. A little prodding revealed that the young bride had spent the first day at her new home tossing and turning on a bedbug-riddled bed. Not wanting to remember her sour face from the photo session the next day, she had shredded all photos from the day — erasing, as Viegas says, both memory and evidence of the day. One of the photos shows Viegas' own family, decked in Victorian hairpieces, elbow gloves, hoop skirts, coat and the works. Though their costumes look suitably royal, the background of the picture is quite ordinary, with agricultural implements and a simple house in the backdrop. Apparently, such pictures were used to indicate the family's position and identity in the social hierarchy. Another instance Viegas remembers is of an elderly gentleman in Cansaulim-Velsao village. In order to preserve a certain likeness of his elders, the man had commissioned someone to paint the photos, then photographed the painting and framed the final product! A rambling North Goa mansion was mostly abandoned except for a maid and her sons taking care of the place for a non-resident family. When the maid opened a nondescript table in the corner, out tumbled a massive collection of old photographs, proof of habitation in the desolate house. Photography is not unlike death, Viegas says, an image or some memory is there, but transient. Insights into the culture Photography, especially of this kind, becomes an important tool for sociology and anthropology. Praveen Rai, academic secretary at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi says that apart from being an archive of information relating to a particular period, photos enable sociologists to peek into a society's culture, traditions and practices, highlighting specific nuances and peculiarities which may be amiss in the writings of the period. Family pictures become visual narratives that serve as evidence of a family's historical roots, he adds. p_mahi...@dnaindia.net http://epaper.dnaindia.com/epapermain.aspx?edorsup=Mainqueryed=20querypage=17boxid=30936758parentid=126914eddate=10/17/2010

From: Jeevan R jeevan...@gmail.com October 19, 2010 7:08 AM Subject: Re: [Goanet] The Miracle of Chilean Mines What about the heroic role played by the Medics, Rescue workers, Engineers, and Scientists who all existed and physically brought the miners out of the hole which could have very well become their tomb. **Dear Jeevan, I asked you all to reflect. Thanks for your reflection. Actually all worked in solidariy and with hope. This itself is a miracle. The 33 miners were certainly in a state of depression, panic, fear. They could have died of shock, or silicosis, or pneumonia, or of any other infection, or become mad during the 69 days in the cave. They must have been angry also against the Establishment... All of them were people with faith in God. All prayed. They attributed their miracle not to Science, but to God. God acts through the secondary causes. Families were praying for them. Work as if everything depends on you alone, pray as if everything depends on God alone. This is a valuable motto. Prayer nourishes hope and strength. It leads to work for others. As you say, it was heroic role on the part of rescuers and medicos, which is explained by prayer and faith in God. Faith in God leads to responsibility and commitment. In spite of all technological advances, they fell into the cave, which gave in. Technology also helped the workers to bring them up. God's finger is there! I read that the Holy Father Benedict XVI sent to each of them rosaries from the Vatican, brought personally by the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz ossa. The miners were all together praying the Rosary, asking the intercession of Mother of Jesus, our heavenly Mother. They were rescued on October 13, day of the sixth apparition of Mary to three children in Fatima, on October 13, 1917, with the miracle of the sun. The government, the public, the miners and their families consider it a miracle. This is very meaningful. All attribute it to Mary. Mary was there to help them! Science alone cannot do that miracle. Re: [Goanet] Science of Manipulations
There is no truth to the claims made in the post appended below. In particular, the claim that there is a controversy about the safety of aspartame among scientists is completely false. To add to the public health information from reliable sources that I have already provided, I quote below statements from two other respected medical sources attesting to the safety of aspartame, and refuting this fraudulent internet websites-based false propaganda that is continuing unabated on Goanet. *** FROM THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS *** (Please see http://www.aafp.org/afp/20001101/diary.html ) QUOTE ...the Internet is providing the general public with invaluable and incredible access to medical information. Unfortunately, it has also become the vehicle of choice for the unethical purveyors of unending medical legends, quackery and unscrupulous medical advice. As family physicians become masters of information management, they also need to become skilled at helping patients find the information that can be beneficial. There are a number of superior Web sites that will help you and your patients evaluate Internet urban legends, such as Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis being caused by aspartame. UNQUOTE * FROM A BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL EDITORIAL * ( Please see BMJ 2004;329:755-756 (2 October),doi:10.1136/bmj.329.7469.755) QUOTE Anyone searching the web on aspartame, launched in 1981 by Monsanto, the manufacturer of NutraSweet, will find a vast catalogue of frightening personal accounts attributing multiple health disasters to exposure to aspartame.1 Although no orchestrated public outcry about aspartame has taken place, much sensationalist journalism has been published mostly on websites (for example, www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/). In contrast, aspartame marketing implies that it embodies a healthy way of life and avoids obesity. Are these claims of hazards and benefits supported by evidence? Evidence does not support links between aspartame and cancer, hair loss, depression, dementia, behavioural disturbances, or any of the other conditions appearing in websites. UNQUOTE Cheers, Santosh --- On Wed, 10/20/10, Ivo icso...@bsnl.in wrote: **You are right, Bosco. But why to stop giving links. Precisely you have to assess the value of the links. Regards. Fr.Ivo
Re: [Goanet] The Miracle of Chilean Mines
Folks, The way I see it, the miners had probably first made enemies with God as he sent some of them, while they were still minors at twelve years old, to work underground in the darkest and unsafest mines. The next step was to seal them alive in a tomb for no apparent reason. All this was then somehow followed by a generous 'miracle' from God. Fr.Ivo wrote: Actually all worked in solidariy and with hope. Every work place that has more than one worker requires the workers to work in solidarity and with hope. There is no other way to work. The possible exception, of course, is the devil's workshop ;-) In spite of all technological advances, they fell into the cave, which gave in. Technology also helped the workers to bring them up. God's finger is there! The fact is that the only entrance/exit to the mine got blocked. In N. America unions insist that all mines have two separate entrances/exits. In Chile, these laws are non-existent or not adhered to, else the miners would have probably been out by the end of their regular shift i.e. without the need for a 'miracle.' They attributed their miracle not to Science, but to God. The western press reported that some of the Christian miners had both wives and mistresses. I genuinely see these dual purpose men becoming fans of God. They are clueless to the level of which science has developed or essentially, what allowed scientist to pin point accurately where the trapped miners were and the easiest method to rescue them. This was nothing but a rescue mission using the best science know to man. Mervyn1346Lobo
