Dear Joe,

It comes from the Portuguese language.
"Agosto" means August (the month).
"Desgosto" has many meanings depending on the context, including
displeasure, annoyance or sorrow.
There was a belief that the month of August would bring sorrow or misfortune
in the family, hence the tradition of eating something sweet, to ward off the
potential bitterness of the month.

I enjoy your postings on the various groups.

[Goanet] Opposition CCP Corporator complains about blatant illegalities in Open Space in St. Inez

Sub: Illegal houses/hutments built in Open Space opposite Sameer
Apartments, near Hotel Ameya, St. Inez and conversion of Open Space
into Volleyball Court.

Dear Sir,

This is with reference to an open space located opposite Sameer
Apartments, near Hotel Ameya, St. Inez, Panaji-Goa.

This is to bring to your notice that a few unauthorized houses/
hutments have been built there along with bathrooms. The dirty water
from the bathrooms keeps spilling onto the adjoining road and is
causing a great deal of inconvenience to the public, apart from
creating a stench and health hazards to residents of the area. Mud,
debris, garbage, etc is also consistently dumped just outside Sameer
Apartments and often spills onto the road.

I have also received complaints from the residents of this locality
that a Club house has been built illegally in this open space, and the
open space has been converted into a Volleyball Playground for the
Youth of the Bandh, when the Open space in fact was intended to be a
garden/recreational area for all the residents of this locality.

You are requested to kindly look into this matter, and to initiate
steps to restore this place back to its original purpose.

You are also requested to take urgent action against the unauthorized
houses/hutments that have been built here, which is causing immense
damage to the surroundings and the environment.

Kindly also ensure that no further mud, debris or garbage is dumped
there, and to take strict action against those who are dumping their
waste in that area.

Photographs of the Illegalities and the damages caused, attached herewith.

[Goanet] Bombay High Court Order: Cops not to use personal mobile phones

2011-08-02 Thread Gerald Fernandes
MUMBAI: City police officers who use their own mobile phones to communicate
with their sources have suddenly started avoiding them, thanks to a recent
Bombay High Court  order.

The Bombay HC found that a police officer, Balasaheb Khade, was using two
cellphones to demand bribes. The court observed that Khade may not be the only
officer doing this and ordered that the police commissioner direct all such
officers to furnish details of their phones. The court said any officer using a
private mobile phone (one which was not given to him/her by the department)
should face action.

The police commissioner directed all police officers to provide details of
their mobile phones, international mobile equipment identity numbers of their
handset and their residential address. Since then officers avoid carrying their
'private phones' and stick to their official ones.

Former IPS officer and lawyer Y P Singh said, "It's a conflicting situation. If
the officer can't interact with criminals they couldn't gather information
about criminal activities and if they are caught interacting they face
departmental action. There should be comprehensive circular from the police
commissioner prescribing the procedure for interaction with any anti-social
element to gather intelligence."

A senior police officer said many of the officers still take the risk and use
their private mobiles.

Comment:
Will this order als apply in Goa, since Goa and Maharashtra have the same High
Court? Is it neccessary in the light of Goa Police personnel being found to be
involved in Drug trafficking, circulating fake currency and pimping for
politicians?

I think Mr. Bhatcar would have been better off if he had kept his wonderings to
himself rather than put it to pen.

Is there anything we can guarantee in this world ? We humans do not even know
that once conceived, will we be born alive or not ? If born, who knows that we
will survive the day, week, month or year, can anyone guarantee a life span ?
Even then we make babies, don't we ? We Indians are certainly very good at
that, aren't we ?

I would also like to say that just because we cannot guarantee employment, it
does not mean we shouldn't have Institutions or even try ? If we know that
education cannot guarantee employment, why do we have all schools and colleges,
is that the only purpose of the institutions ?

It's a basic human tendency and more so in India that we wish our children to be
the most successful, what actually happens is not the point, it the means that
we can provide that is the point or rather the recourses that we can utilize to
be successful. Having said this I would further say, it is not the quantitative
education or the institutions that we have but rather the quality of education
that quality institutions can provide, even then can we guarantee success or
employment ? No my friends, we are just mere tools, we can only try and to try
we need to be provided with the best of resources, that's where Authorities with
a strong foresight come into the equation.

FN,

You reach for me on one of my best days of this year. As you know,
my focus has been on the golden disc for the past little while now. Ten
years ago I was shouting myself hoarse tying to convince people to
look forward. To look forward and see where the golden disk was
going.

I figured out then that this is not a forum for discussing the future. This
is a forum that has its feet trapped in a bucket of concrete named
1961.

Anything of 1961 and before is scared and needs to be revived and
beaten to death, again and again.  The present is of no importance.
The future is beyond comprehension.

The phase of the full or golden moon and what has been associated
with every stage of it in the past, remains of no interest to me. What is
of interest to me is the phase of  that other golden disc, the one ounce
type. Those who have been here long enough are aware that I was
urging people to buy a lot since I was convinced gold would hit $1,650.

It did so today. I am in a position to retire and so are all those who saw
the fallacy of keeping their assets in paper currencies when govts went
on a printing spree.

Anyways, the moon will do what it does best and some people will always
hold its movements in awe. Following the movements of the other
golden disc could still make a lot of people here happy as if the POG hits
$1,770,  the next gravitational pull is to $5,000.

Gerry,
The number of medical seats in Goa, have not increased substantially over the
years. Previously, 63 to currently 100 seats... For any medical seats to be
increased, I believe you need infrastructure available to train these
doctors...
There are 2 law colleges in Goa... that number has remained unchanged for a
long time...
That is NOT the case with engineering college seats...Currently, Goa College of
Engineering has an annual intake of 320 students...Agnel Charities Padre
Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna takes in 240 students...Shri Rayeshwar
Institute of Engg. & Information Technology, takes in a further 180
Don Bosco Engineering now adds a further 240 seats, according to the Times of
India report...That is a total of 980...
Besides, there are Diploma Engineers from Government Polytechnic...

The rate at which Goa is churning out Engineers, there is simply no industrial
infrastructure to absorb them...When I graduated decades ago from GEC,
Farmagudi, I know what we had to go through to find a decent job...Many had to
leave Goa in search of better pastures, even when GEC used to have an intake of
only 63!!!I know that even now, fresh Engineers are struggling to find jobs in
Goa...
It is my opinion, that, it does not make any sense to keep on adding
professional colleges without an adequate industrial infrastructure...

Now, State to hold own Road Safety Week
-
Against the backdrop of 317 road accident deaths in Goa last year and
176 road fatalities till June-end this year, the transport department
is gearing to observe the first-ever Goa state road safety week from
August 1. The state normally observes the national road safety week in
the first week of January.

"Follow traffic rules and save life" is the theme of the Goa road
safety week to be inaugurated by transport minister Ramkrishna
Dhavalikar at 10.30am on August 1 at the Kadamba bus stand, Panaji.

Pointing to the 317 deaths due to road accidents, 4,570 in all, in Goa
during 2010, transport director Arun Desai told media persons that the
figures are "definitely alarming. There is almost one death every day
on Goa's roads. The victims are mostly two-wheeler riders below 25
years. The police and traffic department alone cannot help to correct
this. This is a social issue," Desai said.

So the transport department is using the Goa road safety week as an
opportunity to educate society and raise awareness among the general
public. After the inaugural ceremony of the road safety week at the
Panaji KTC bus stand, Dhavalikar will launch a "road safety
information cum awareness bus."

The bus is equipped with banners, posters and other information about
road safety. It is also equipped with audio-visual equipment to screen
short films on road safety. The bus will move from place to place and
screen the road safety movies to members of the public. In Panaji, the
bus will make stops near Inox and the Miramar circle.

The bus will also conduct its awareness-raising mission in Margao on
August 2, at Ponda on August 3, Mormugao on August 4, Mapusa on August
5 and Bicholim on August 6.

Among the various short films, the bus will screen "Afsos" and
"Ehsaas". The films dwell on various road-problems including drunken
driving. Desai said the transport department is also stressing on the
"Golden Hour". It is that one hour after the accident, during which,
if the accident victim is taken to the hospital, his chances of
survival are almost 80%, Desai said.

On the inaugural day, the department will also publish a booklet on
information about the scenario on road accidents in Goa, India and
across the world. The booklet will also give statistics on road
accidents and deaths in Goa, the accident-prone spots and other
helpful information.

In the second phase, the transport department will move on to colleges
and schools. NSS volunteers will fan out into all 88 higher
secondaries in Goa to conduct a sample survey regarding road safety
awareness among the public during the next four months.

The transport department will also initiate various competitions in
posters, jingles, essays, street plays, etc. in super-school complexes
and higher secondaries. The department will give financial assistance
to organize road safety awareness programmes to NGOs if they
volunteer. "In the next five months, when the next national road
safety week comes, every Goan household should be aware of road safety
rules," Desai said.

[Goanet] AALI VACHRATANCHI VAARI - Mumbai to host the biggest ever SlutWalk on the face of the earth.

2011-08-02 Thread Dr. Anjali Mohan Rao
*AALI VACHRATANCHI VAARI* - Come September, Mumbai is next on the list,
with preparations on full swing by spirited & overwhelming young Mumbaikars
to host the biggest ever SlutWalk on the face of the earth. Women should
participate in such a march to mark the unceded territory of women’s bodies.
Language is a weapon yielded against the powerless. People should be made to
realize that it’s the rapists that cause rape and sexual assault can never
be justified.

Those who are opposed to such SlutWalks should realize that it is not only
about women & clothing, but it is more complicated a question which needs to
be addressed seriously. Even in rural India where women are ‘legally’
required to cover their entire bodies, sexual assault occurs. The idea that
there is some aesthetic that attracts sexual assault or even keeps you safe
from sexual assault is inaccurate, ineffective and even dangerous.

[Goanet] Slut walk in India

2011-08-02 Thread Nelson Lopes
SLUT WALK
Indians are very much enamored by foreign labels and thoughts. The
contagion of adopting the nomenclature of slut walk/Besharmi is
abhorrent The participants in the west wore skimpy, short, transparent
outfits to change the mind set of men and to demonstrate that they
have the freedom to dress as and what they like. Is one day protest
will produce results intended .? The result was a remark of police
official who asked them to dress like sluts The culture there is of
indifference to the attire, which is normal and is not considered as
provocative of sexual overtones A couple kissing passionately in Times
square, New York to my great surprise was completely ignored by crowds
and passers by even as I tried to record observation for half an hour
In India it would be a circus. In India even the modest dress of sari
,salwar kamij cannot be safe from x ray eyes undressing women
mentally The rapes against women, abuse, molestation are not directly
related to immodest, provocative outfits The study of medical interns
with all their knowledge has found that they are not not immune to
these tendencies Indian culture of dressing is not suggestive
normally, but recent trends in fashion and liberation of women with
the desire to be independent and outgoing may sometime invite special
attention towards themselves The freedom to express in dressing ,must
consider the tradition and culture of the place, so as not be
outstanding, drawing curious attention The participation of men along
with women in modest dress in the Delhi slut walk is symbolic in
nature that will not change the attitude of those males bent upon
taking forceful advantage of situation The women working alongside
with men .late hours, of work ,partying has created situations that
favour this barbaric uncivilized promiscuous behaviour. The increasing
cases of divorces, economically independent, educated women .live in
relations, the ease of communication ,movements have also uprooted the
traditional values of fidelity. The Indian films are aping the west in
conveying loose moral messages and the serials are goading infidelity
The easy availability of phonographic DVD`s are corrupting the young
minds Look at the advertising industry, which is using women only to
catch attention by vulgarity , obscenity and ladies themselves act as
willing prey lending themselves to this degradation for the lure of
money Hence the whole environment is glorifying these acts as if it
is perfectly normal. The law is very lenient to the offenders ,while
the victims of these atrocities die a living death of agony and social
ostrocization and shame Education and respect for the opposite sex
along with legislation delivering quick deterrent punishment may
change the situation of looking towards women as easy prey for sexual
gratification

Goa Archbishop granted time to appeal against summons in HCPTI | 03:08
PM,Aug 02,2011

Panaji, Aug 2 (PTI) Goa Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao, who failed to appear
before a local court today as a witness in connection with a trespassing
case, got a relief to appeal against the summons on him in the High Court.
Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panaji, Sarika Faldesai today
granted two weeks time for Fr Ferrao to appeal against his summons before
the Bombay High court at Goa. The JMFC today fixed the appearance of
Archbishop for August 16, if he fails to get reprieve from the High court.
When the matter came up for hearing today, Fr Ferrao moved the application
to grant him time to appeal in the High Court. The application was moved
through Fr Victor Rodrigues, who holds the Power of Attorney of the
Archbishop. The Archbishop is amongst several witnesses including the former
Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane, who is sought to be examined by
activist-cum-lawyer Aires Rodrigues. Rodrigues and others were chargesheeted
by police for trespassing into the church property at Ribander in
2004.Rodrigues was earlier acquitted by the court, but the acquittal was
again challenged by the state government before JMFC. In his defence, Aires
Rodrigues had claimed that local church and priest Fr Newton Rodrigues, who
is now posted in Canada, had filed a false complaint against him as he was
following a case of molestation filed against Fr Newton Rodrigues by mother
of a 13-year-old girl. During the hearing today, Rodrigues also moved a
contempt against the church. He claimed that during last Sunday masses, the
priest at Ribander Church, Fr Alcantra Rodrigues had appealed the people to
rise against court's summons to the Archbishop. The court has kept the order
on the contempt plea for August 9, when other two witnesses including police
inspector Sunita Sawant, who filed the revision petition against Rodrigues
and social activist, Auda Viegas, would testify in the matter.

Till today,I have not understood what exactly life means? but I can confidently
say it is beautiful though it's a mixture of good, bad and ugly things.Life
cannot be always smooth and a bed of roses  and if it turn out to be same, life
is meaningless.Sometimes life is very difficult but we have to take  it  as it
comes and live it,if not for our own selves than at least for those who needs
us badly. The great Mother Theresa lived her entire life for others.

My friend, Xavier Fernandes was all in one.He was a singer, musician, actor and

highest number of first prizes in that particular year about 2 decades ago.He
also remained to be a part a Church choir some years ago and was  a very active

He was one among the few government employees who knew his job but I would say
he took a different road which his colleagues and friends never wanted him to

It was shocking to hear the sad news at sea but it's a fact that he is

[Goanet] Advertorials in Herald denies space of local news

re. Mauvin's birthday today

H has about  7.5 pages
NT  about 3.5
TOI about 1.5
GT  about 1.5
Total about 13.5 full pages (including some colour ads on front page

(atleast 12 lacs at prevailing rates)

Herald very cunningly inserted some ‘paid news’  items under
it’s regular section ‘Snapshot’ about 5 such news items.
Nowhere it was said ‘advertorial snapshot’ or ‘Paid News items’

Whereas, NT, very conveniently inserted  the paid news items under
it’s regular ‘Local Scan’
There were 5 items and no where within the ‘local scan’ it says
advert or advertorial

TOI put it under ‘News in breif’

And what about GT?
It too put some ‘paid news items’ under ‘News in brief’

I feel it is very disgusting , which amounts to cheating (its readers).
We don’t buy newspapers to read ‘paid news’ which is very cunningly
shown as regular news.
( we pay 28% more per paper as commision charged by deliveryman including TOI)

Recently, a case was reported where in a Goan was cheated by a
‘tantrik or sadu’ to a tune of Rs.3 lacs in Gold.
How the victim or the victims come to know about the fake tantric or
 the sadhu?
Through such ‘unethical adverts’ appearing in the very same
newspapers in which such cheating news is reported.
It’s like making ‘money’ on them and then again making ‘news’ on them.
How hypocritical journalism or newspapers are these?

Sometimes,  we know there is 'no such thing' yet we glorify it for 'money'

Looks like our news papers would do anything for money.

The community built dozens of schools with high educational standards, with an
emphasis on foreign languages.  Teachers were brought from England and India.
Muslims and Christians attended freely. The Jews' international outlook caused
the Arabs to identify them with occupying European powers.
Jews supported social and cultural reforms.
Father was happy when the British arrived in 1917. He was tired with dealing
with Turkish Ottoman corruption.  Their governors, or 'walis', had extorted

A very successful branch of my family, the Sassons, had left in 1980 for
Bombay and Shanghai and made fortunes.
At weddings, gifts were in currency of the most value, Indian rupees.

[Goanet] Shravan... rains

2011-08-02 Thread Frederick FN Noronha * फ्रेडरिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
The month of Shravan has started, but in Goa it has been raining quite
heavily. My neighbour was explaining how the belief in 'nakshatras'
influenced the weather and "with this heavy rain,it could continue till Aug
15 or 20". That was his view...

A *Nakshatra* ( Sanskrit :
nakshatra, 'star', from
Sanskrit:
naksha, 'approach', and
Sanskrit:
tra, 'guard') is one of the 27 sectors of the ecliptic in the lunar
mansionsystem of Hindu
astrology . The names are
related to the most prominent star or
asterism in the
respective sectors.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakshatra

Of course we both agreed that the "modern" met observatory at Altinho,
Panjim mostly gets it wrong! He also pointed out how the older generation
actually "understood" the different patterns of rain -- from the heavy to
the light, passing shows to monsoon-set-in type of weather.

Wonder if someone academic could study these sciences of the past, or
whether there is something already dealing with the field in Goa? FN

PS: The holy month of Shravan is when many Hindus go off fish. One jokingly
told me: "Now fish will be cheap for you."

Wild animals' meat seized at Old Goa restaurantRajendra P Kerkar, TNN | Aug
2, 2011, 01.23AM IST
PANAJI: Acting upon the complaint of Amrut Singh from the Animal Rescue
Squad (ARS), Bicholim, officials of the wildlife wing of the state forest
department on Monday evening seized 31 kg of wild boar
meat and
3 kg of mouse-deer meat at Bruno Bar in Old Goa.

Forest department officials showed the search warrant to owner Bruno
Mendonca, entered the restaurant and seized the meat.

Assistant conservator of forests Vikas Desai, along with Singh, range forest
officer V R Korgaonkar and other forest officials conducted the raid.

"During the monsoon, wild
animals are
killed in large numbers and their meat is sold for a good price in
restaurants in various parts of Goa.We got a tip-off from sources that this
particular restaurant would serve wild animals' meat. So, along with forest
department officials, a plan was made and the restaurant raided," said
Singh.

The mouse-deer's skin was removed, it was chopped into pieces and stored in
the deep-freezer. In another compartment, 31kg of wild boar meat was also
stored, forest department officials said.

The mouse-deer or the Indian Chevrotain is locally known as "pisay" and is,
today, on the verge of extinction as this small, inocent deer has become the
victim of poaching.

[Goanet] Rest in Peace now, Father Hugh

2011-08-02 Thread Audry Pinto

Rest in Peace now, Father Hugh

A Tribute by Ladislaus L D’Souza

Alfred Tennyson’s famous line, “Home they brought her warrior dead!”
could well apply to one of Bombay’s finest priests, Father Hugh Fonseca!
In his sudden death on 16 June 2011, we have lost our best soldier yet!
Hugh was a man who would have definitely preferred to die with his boots
on, rather than while on a sabbatical which, to my knowledge, was never
his cup of tea. The tragedy of his life and death is that a pastor like
him should have died away from the flock he would have loved to serve
until his last breath.

Father Hugh endeared himself to many during his forty-three year-long
priestly ministry. Not that he did not antagonize many, too. But that is
the price he paid for standing up for his principles so zealously,
daring to call a spade just that: a spade. Indeed, in his dying, the
Archdiocese is bereft of its most competent trouble-shooter to whom
sincerity and dedication to duty came with natural ease. He was not
known to have been to management school as such! And yet, both his
administrative and pastoral skills, the highlight of which was clarity
of vision and purpose, were known to be both enviable and worthy of
emulation.

Coming from an affluent family (his father, if my information serves me
right, was Financial Adviser to the Australian Government), he had no
use for the perks and privileges of office. He was, rather, deeply
conscious of the enormity of the task in hand as Parish Priest. This was
evident from the cat-at-the-typewriter poster displayed on his desk with
the caption, “I am the boss here – the buck stops with me”. Was it any
wonder then that when it came to protecting Church property and finance,
he refrained from passing the buck? Not one to take things lying down,
he demonstrated in ample measure that he never believed in the “let
sleeping dogs lie” policy, even at the risk of seeing his name
besmirched in the secular press.

Pastorally, every parish where he served as Parish Priest can be said to
have benefited much from Father Hugh’s ministrations. It was he who
opened for Orlem a new way of celebrating its annual patronal feast. In
the very second year of his term, perhaps in keeping with the steady
growth in numbers, he moved the parish novena from the confines of the
church out onto the ground, thus bringing virtually the entire parish
together to prepare as a community for the feast. Wonder of wonders,
this brought to the fore a whole lot of hitherto hidden talent! Each
zone had its own choir for the allotted day of the Novena which saw
hands that wielded the rolling pin and the ladle at home either waving
the conductor’s baton or coaxing choice music out of the keyboard. A
choral-musical revolution was a natural fallout, with many, both young
and old, making a bee-line for learning either to read music or to play
the organ. And that was when every Sunday Mass in the parish got its own
choir! His introduction of a fellowship affair following the Feast Mass,
with the zones and sectors preparing and selling choice fare is most
remarkable! Lo and behold! Orlem became a happening place!

The various commissions he established (e.g. Liturgical, Civic etc) gave
further impetus to the involvement of the parishioners in the progress
of their parish even as it came to be counted as one of the few “model”
parishes in the Archdiocese! And why not! All his planning, be it for
the Parich Pastoral Council meets or Liturgical preparations by the PLT,
whether for the Sundays of the year or for major liturgical events, was
timely and well-advanced, revolving as it did around the Liturgical
Calendar. A stickler for time, it was not uncommon to have him walk up
to the stage-front and say aloud: Would someone please tell me at what
time the 4 o’clock tele-games begin? Witty as ever, he never shied away
from pulling a fast one on himself. One April Fools’ Day, on a visit to
the slipped-disked Vice President of the PPC, he asked for the Catholic
calendar and instantly pointing to 1 April said, “See this” – it was the
feast of Saint Hugh! “Phew!” I exclaimed. “Now, what if you replace the
second ‘h’ with ‘e’!” “Huge! But that’s nothing! Just knock off the
first ‘H’ and see – ugh!!!” Not many could match his wit! And yet, he
did one day meet his match in a Third standard Sunday School child.
“What happened, Jerry? Why were you absent last Sunday?” “Because I had
high fever, Father.” “High fever? How high – up to the 1st floor?” asked
Father. Pat came the reply: “No Father, up to the second floor”!

Children were particularly fond of him – he emoted well with them,
making their spiritual welfare his priority. It was such a delight to
see kids packing the church to capacity at the Children’s Mass
celebrated by him, occupying the sanctuary steps, even sitting
cross-legged beneath the altar! God couldn’t have been praised better!
This however didn’t seem to

H. E. Mr. Satish C. Mehta - The Ambassador of India to Kuwait
Posted on 8/1/2011

Patriotism, service-attitude and kindness seem to have been traits inherited by
H.E. Mr. Satish Chand Mehta, the Ambassador of India to Kuwait.   We met the
new Indian Ambassador to welcome him and to convey the hearty greetings and
best wishes of Frontliners  and the Indian Community in Kuwait.

H. E. Satish C. Mehta turned out to be a charming person who shows respect and
courteousness to others while listening to them and answering them.  The
position and power of his dignitary status rests easy on his shoulders.  The
only thing that was overwhelmingly evident was his urge to be of service to the
Indian Community in Kuwait.
H.E . Mehta is sure to be at home in Kuwait's environment and desert climate.
Born in Jodhpur in 1955, he completed his B.Com studies and CA in Jaipur.
His father, Mr. Sumer Chand Mehta, an engineer in Birla group, engaged himself
in total social service after retirement.  "He used to collect medicines and
food from others to distribute to needy”, recalls the Indian Ambassador.
Perhaps, this noble quality of his father made a deep impression on him.   Mr.
Mehta joined IFS in 1983, so that being of service and help to others could be
a daily part of his job-routine.
While his sympathy for the poor and downtrodden was much evident, he goes
further and spares no effort to make others to think and act towards providing
food and education for the deprived and needy.
“We are fortunate to have been well-educated and well-placed in meeting the
necessities of life.  But many of our people in India are not so fortunate.  It
is our responsibility to aid, assist and bring them up in life". He further
stresses, "Share; Do not hoard".
The IFS career of H.E. Mehta is studded with important assignments and
achievements.  After serving in France, Ivory Coast and Italy, he was Political
Advisor to UN Head of Mission in Haiti during UN Peace Keeping Operations in
1995-96.
He served as Director in the Indian Prime Minister's Office from 1997 to 1999
dealing with the strategic sector. From July 1999 to July 2002 he was Political
Counsellor in the Indian Mission to the United Nations in New York, from where
he went as Deputy Chief of Mission in Tel Aviv from 2002-2005.

He served as India's Consul General in Toronto from 2005-2008 and as Joint
Secretary (North) in the Ministry of External Affairs from October 2008 to July
2011.  He took reins as Ambassador of India to Kuwait on July 24, 2011.
He is happy to be in Kuwait. "Kuwait is an important country of the Gulf
region.  India and Kuwait have been having excellent relationship stretching
back to many decades. There is deep understanding and respect between the two
countries. India has strong and varied business links with Kuwait and a large
and thriving Indian expatriate community is in Kuwait, contributing to the
development of Kuwait".
He is glad to note that the Government of Kuwait esteems the Indian workers for
their technical knowledge, work efficiency and sincerity of efforts. He
appreciates the Indian Community in Kuwait for having earned the respect and
trust of the people of Kuwait.
Talking about the nature of the tasks on his hand as Ambassador of India to
Kuwait, he is fully resolved to develop further the mutually beneficial
relationship between India and Kuwait by adding new business, social and
cultural links.

He is also acutely aware of the expectations and needs of the large Indian
community in Kuwait. “The job of an Ambassador is not easy. He needs to be
alert and awake to the problems of the people at all times.  It can come at any
time and in any shape".
He certainly has the determination and expertise to tackle and resolve any
problem faced by any Indian in Kuwait.  What is even more assuring is his
attitude in recognising that people in distress or difficult situation need
sympathetic approach and helping hand from the Embassy of India.
"I feel that I have been given this position so that I could approach people's
problem with necessary compassion and to redress it in the shortest possible
time".
Under his command, this attitude is sure to prevail at all levels and in each
every action of the Embassy of India.  We can be assured of on an excellent
team-work by all officials and staff at the Embassy of India under his
leadership.
He mentions reading, tennis and Bridge as his hobbies.
His wife, Mrs. Preeti  Mehta vibes with him in all respects .  She shares his
passion for social service and is actively involved in voluntary

[Goanet] Something worth understanding - the Pig and cow in Goa

2011-08-02 Thread Camillo Fernandes

SOMETHING WORTH UNDERSTANDING

Let me tell you a little story of a rich Goan landlord who once asked his
parish priest-- 'Why does everybody call me stingy when everyone knows that
when I die I will leave everything I have to this church?'

The priest said; 'There once was a pig and a cow in this village. The pig was
unpopular and the cow was loved by all in the village.
This puzzled the pig. The pig said to the cow, 'people speak warmly of your
good nature and your helpful attitude. They think you are very generous because
each day you give them milk, butter and cheese. But what about me? I give them
everything I have. I give them the famous Goa sausages, bacon and ham. I also
provide ingredients for mouth-watering sorpotel. Yet no one likes me. Why is
that?'

The priest continued:' Do you know what the cow answered? '

The Cow said, ' Perhaps it's because I give while I am still living.'

Aires keep up the good work. Corruption comes from the Vatican please remember.
The Catholic Community has been supporting these so called reps of the Pope who
think they can get away with anything and everything as long as they are
supported by the Pope. This must stop so Aires go on and bring them down.

Dear Aries,

Reference to your email mentioned below on the ArchBishop being summoded by the
court. As a Goan and a devoted christian i am not too happy on the ArchBishop
being summoned.

I am reading a lot of articles of yours which you write and your fight with
people who are corrupt and against corruption but you need to be focussed on
the people whom you have fought battle earlier with (Churchill bros ,
Monserate, Narvekars, Naiks the land sharks, Drug Lords etc.) earlier to
weed them out of the sytem. You need to take the support of the church (Arch
Bishop) the NRI's and the famous Goan people to convey the message to the
people to fight aginst the corruption. Who better then the church and the like
of famous people of Goa who are against all this can do it.

Election is coming get the reality out to the people who is who and let the
people know who holds w hat (Property / Money )in which country and place you
have the support of the RTI to give you information . Start the campaign now
and faith in God you will be successful in your mission.

If you are asking in return for soemthing the people of Goa and your
childrenand your Grand children will thank you for what you have done to weed
out corruption and you will be in books of Goa history.

God Bless Goa and lets keep it safe.
