[Goanet-News] Wendell Rodricks, Damodar Mauzo, Sudhir Kakkar invited to Jaipur Literary Festival
The Pink City of Jaipur is all set to hold the much talked about International Literary Festival, the largest in Asia Pacific, starting from 20th January. The five day festival that will host several sessions engaging a spectrum of writers from across the world is expected to pull around forty thousand delegates during the event. Besides the people with literary interest, there will be spectators for whom the fascination ranges from seeing authors “in the flesh” to listening to talk-show celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey who will be in conversation with Barkha Dutt on the 22nd. The other attractions of the event from abroad are Sri Lankan-born novelist Michael Ondaatje, Pakistani writer Fatima Bhutto, Nigerian poet and novelist Ben Okri and New Yorker editor David Remnick, among the big names on the literary high street. From among India are Girish Karnad, Shashi Tharoor, the Goa-based Sudhir Kakkar, Chetan Bhagat, Javed Akhtar, Gulzar, A.K.Mehrotra, Pavan K.Verma and a host of others. According to Jaya Bhattacharjee Rose, ‘it is a mela time to listen to panelists, to be able to ask questions directly of one’s favourite authors and discover new ones. It is also a space that provides opportunities for aspiring writers to contact publishers, word-doctors, and literary agents’. William Dalrymple, director, Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF), says when he gets invited to international literary festivals as an author, he is always on the lookout for new voices or to connect with established names. It is easier to do it over breakfast than send off an impersonal email request. The two writers from Goa invited to participate are Wendell Rodricks and Damodar Mauzo. Wendell’s new book 'Moda Goa: History and Style' will be launched on the 23rd while Damodar Mauzo will be in conversation with Esther David on the 24th. In this session on ‘Theatre of the Novel: Readings and Conversation’ Esther David and Damodar Mauzo will be introduced by Wendell Rodricks. Author and art critic Esther David writes novels that evoke the Indian Jewish identity, while the novels and short stories of popular and prolific Konkani writer, Damodar Mauzo, depict the Catholic lifestyle of Goa. The two Sahitya Akademi Award winners will read and discuss their works. The session will be of approximately 50 minutes duration, including introduction, discussion and Q A. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
[Goanet] God,Save my Goa!
God,Save my Goa! Last five years were worst for Goa.Goa did changed at a very rapid pace during the last five years but definitely from bad to worst.Goa had the worst chief minister in the history of goan politics who could not take any independent decision and could go to any ugly extent to save his money-making kodel.Goa had a total corrupt government,Congress partner,MGP accepted the same. The government was totally for the rich and the powerful. This government has ruined the traditional fishermen, farmers, etc, to make way for illegal projects by the rich. With regard to CRZ,the Digamber Kamat government was very fast to pass a bill and save a five star hotel and no minister in the government was bothered about the traditional fishermen. The state witnessed highest number of agitations against the last government. The former Portuguese colony witnessed different rules for different people.Crime rate increased like anything.Goa Police themselves were involved in drug dealing with names of some sons of ministers in the picture but no law authorities seriously concerned about the same.A sailor named Cypriano was murdered by the Police,a woman was picked up by the Police and molested.Murders, rapes, robberies are very much common in this one time very beautiful state of Goa.A Russian killed a goan,a coastal village,Morjim dominated by Russians and no concerned authorities showing concern towards this increasing Crime. Is this we expected in Liberated Goa?DGP Arya was transferred for not bowing down to the illiterate politicians in power confirming where our state stands as far as law is concerned. This beautiful state is turning from heaven to hell. Government jobs were sold at a very high cost, the range of money varies as per the post. Our chief minister was more interested in the development of migrants rather than niz goenkars.Ration cards are very openly gifted to these migrants to create vote-banks.Our agricultural land has just been grabbed as per their wishes in the name of destructive projects.Hills are been razed into flat surfaces. Our holy water has been polluted and nothing heard from the so called SHAH commissions with regard to illegal mining till now. Now the question is,will we vote the same people back into power?will we elect the same government back again who had planned to sell Goa for all in the name of Regional Plan 2011 and 2021?Are we interested in the future of our children?Politicians in power even dared to play tricks with Goencho saib.Goa desperately needs a change in governance.Vote for change and hope for a better future or Vote for same and get Goa ruined for all.VIVA GOA! It’s clear that broadly speaking, close to fifty percent of Monseratte’s margin of victory was due to votes cast by voters who were either fake, mainly migrants in construction sites and household helps given voting cards. A NGO, Youth Force of Taleigao, who went through the electoral rolls and submitted their objections before the Election Commission managed to cut to size the electoral roll in Taleigao constituency, which has been known for importing migrant voters during the election time. Dattaprasad Naik, a foot soldier of BJP, heading the NGO said “ 2604 names out of total 26,700 voters were fake, which included 900- odd migrants.” The intensive drive to eliminate the bogus voter began and immediately, 1,200 names were chopped till July 2011. The drive continued and in the second phase which began in October 2011, another 1404 names were deleted. [Goanet] CREDIBILITY OF INSTITUTIONS
CREDIBILITY OF INSTITUTIONS Every Institution of governance has been undermined or systematically destroyed so people have lost faith in them. The myth propounded that parliament can be a law unto itself needs to be firmly dispelled. In Pakistan we have them shielding President Zardari against the Supreme Court orders to bring him to justice, and in India we have the IAC movement leading to both Sahbas Sense of Houseresolution subsequently observed in the breach. Now the sorry spectacle of our Army Chief approaching the Supreme Court for dispute regarding his date of birth. I think the red lights, black cat guards etc, used to being above the law and getting away with it, is the reason for the present state of affairs! The sooner the people unselfishly realize this, and do NOT permit/support them to play God or treat the Supreme Court and the Constitution lightly whilst bending laws and rules playing dirty politics, the better it will be for our nation . [Goanet] Important LPG Consumer Information
Dear Netters, Along with many consumer fora in Goa, the Saligao Civic Consumer Cell has been campaiging for an LPG distribution system that home-delivers cylinders *only* against booking. Now, besides booking via the telephone and in person at the agents office, here are 2 more centralised booking systems (see attachment). Please make use of and popularise these: HP Anytime *HP Anytime*, *a 24x7 IVRS* based refill booking system, is a customer-centric initiative launched by HPCL in the interest of all HPGAS customers. Through this system, a HPGAS customer can call a Single Number across the State to book refills. The Customer would instantly get a real time booking number from IVRS. This system replaces the current practice of manual booking by the showroom staff. [image: HP Anytime - HPGAS] All the refill bookings made through HP Anytime are captured in a central server and the data is then transferred to the PC’s of respective HPGAS distributors automatically. For those customers who prefer to book personally at the HPGAS distributorship, fixed phones are provided at all Agencies to connect with IVRS. HP Anytime enables HPGAS customers to *book refills and obtain confirmation round-the-clock* seamlessly without any difficulty such as engaged telephones, restricted working hours, manual errors, etc. *The IVRS numbers are as follows: * - * Kerala 99610 23456 * - * Karnataka99640 23456* - * Chandigarh 98556 23456* - * Tamil Nadu 90922 23456* - * Gujarat 98244 23456 * - * Andhra Pradesh96660 23456* - * West Bengal 90888 23456* - * Lucknow98896 23456* - * Maharashtra Goa 8 23456* - * Patna 95071 23456** * - * Delhi 99909 23456** * - * Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad 99909 23456** * The customers can register their landline / mobile numbers as personal numbers on IVRS to facilitate *auto-identification of the customer *when he/she calls up next time. [Goanet] Zanzibar - Goans and the 1964 Revolution
In Goanet Digest of 10th January 2012, you have a review by Roland Francis, of Mervyn Marciel's fine account of his days as a civil servant in colonial Kenya. In that account, he comments thus: It must have been a frightening experience for the Goans settled there, especially since many of them were employed and well regarded by the Sultan who was deposed by a ragtag rough and ready African band of Zanzibaris. The Brits probably allowed this to happen, for their own reasons. No flea could make a move without the Brits allowing it to happen in the Africa of the day. As one of those Goans scared witless by the shock events and gratuitous violence that characterised the Zanzibar Revolution, I would take issue with the reviewer on at least three significant points. One, the revolutionaries were by no means altogether a ragtag rough and ready band. To start with, the Police Force and the embryonic military force were weak and not all that well armed and it therefore did not need much of a superior force to overcome them. Accordingly, initially it required a fairly small number of revolutionaries to overcome the military unit (located at a single camp) but once they had overcome the unit in a trice and got their hands on the armoury, they were pretty well armed and were able to impose their will upon the islands without much opposition. However, what was certainly present at the time unbeknown, it would appear, to the coalition Government that was overthrown, was a well-trained unit of Comrades - Zanzibar Arab youths, members of the (pro-Peking, as it then was, Communist) Umma Party led by the internationally renowned socialist, Abdulrahman Mohammed 'Babu'. These youths had received their training in Cuba primarily, and having known some of them as friends in my youth, believe me, they were no rag tag band. As the Revolution developed, however, more Africans joined the revolutionary forces and that would have given the appearance of a rag-tag band. Given that the Revolution did not happen just by chance but would have been planned (the BBC's Keith Kyle suggested that three separate groups were planning revolutions at the time of Independence) , one can reasonably assume that a contingent of fighters would have received at least some training on a clandestine basis. However, the sharp spine provided by the 'Comrades' was present in the background and, in my view, were the ones to have taken a firm grip of the Revolution. In retrospect, it served a useful purpose to present the Revolution as a spontaneous uprising of the population. The reviewer then suggests that Goans were well regarded by the Sultan. Well they may or may not have been. In any event, whilst a number of Goans certainly did occupy the middle and lower ranks of the Civil Service (with a sprinkling of them in the higher reaches), they were by no means the backbone of the Civil Service, overwhelmed as they were by other Asians and Zanzibar Arabs. Indeed, the one Goan - Wolfango Dourado - to rise to an influential level (as Attorney General) did so *after* the Revolution. It also has to be remember that the Sultan of Zanzibar was a constitutional monarch and would, therefore, have played no role in determining the composition of the Civil Service. That was developed by the British administrators who the reviewer appears to deride! Presumably, Goans in Zanzibar were also well-regarded by the Brits. Thirdly, the reviewer states ever so categorically: The Brits probably allowed this (i.e. the Revolution) to happen, for their own reasons. No flea could make a move without the Brits allowing it to happen in the Africa of the day. This is cynical nonsense. He hedges his bets with probably allowed. The Brits had split the scene by then! Zanzibar was an independent state, an independent Sultanate by then, the British having restored Zanzibar's independence (from its previous Protectorate status) a mere month before then and an Arab-dominated, Arab and Shirazi coalition Government was in charge. Indeed, the allegation before independence was that the British administration had gerrymandered constituency boundaries to ensure the return of the coalition Government. So, they could hardly have allowed the Revolution to take place. The No flea could make a move reference is dresedup to make the colonial administrations in the Africa of the day seem inbued with Nazi-like efficiency. However, any student of colonial history would confirm that, despite any shortcomings on the part of the British in Africa, their administrative prowess was not that tight. Indeed, it could be argued with much credence that the British administrations --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] The dark underbelly of Goan society in London
Everytime I take on a Konkani-English interpreting job, I am convinced nothing will surprise me. Over the course of the last three years, I have seen it all; child molestation, domestic violence, aggravated assault, drunk and disorderly conduct, stabbings, illness, extreme poverty, joblessness, theft, people forsaken in hospitals: I have seen it and sat through hours of enfolding sadness as the tales are recounted to doctors, social workers, police officers and interpreted by me. Yet, each case manages to creep into the recesses of my consciousness and I come away more confused about Goan society than ever. I am deeply troubled today by a recent case and all the piteous misery it has managed to ensue in so many lives. In all my years of being a Goan, in Goa and in the Gulf or America, I never witnessed moral squalor. I knew only the pristine outer facade of middle-class values and sensibilities. I knew the goodness of families scrubbed clean of the indignity of poverty. Granted the cases that I deal with now come from the lower strata of Goan society. Lifted out of Goa they are adrift without even the benefit of language to help them. Things that are swept under the carpet or seen as amusing peccadilloes, can no longer remain hushed in the UK. Once they come to the attention of the local authorities they become serious matters. The old honour code of let's settle it amongst family does not hold good. There are so many questions I am faced with. Real questions I search answers to. Questions that seem politically incorrect and yet questions we must ask ourselves. Are there two faces to Goa? Is the labouring class of Goa different from its middle-class? Are East African Goans different from Portuguese Passport Goans? If so why? Why the difference? What is the Goan school system capable of producing? Can the Goan school system ever level the playing field to give ever one equal opportunity? What kind of a society have we produced in the last 50 years? Have I been naive about what it means to be a Goan all my life? Lurking under the jeweled crucifix of Christianity, under the benevolent smiles and seeming hospitality, perhaps there is an ugliness so impure, that we choose to ignore it. [Goanet] A Cry in the dark - this day, 50 years ago (Eugene Correia)
There were many such incidents never reported. They call this liberation. I guess the author of this article to be a very strange man. BC It was on this day in 1962 that a girl of 12 years was killed by Indian soldiers in the small seaside village of Bogmalo. The tragic incident rocked Goa again, as it was shaken a few weeks earlier, on December 19, by the Indian takeover of Goa. Luzy Adamantina Remiza Rodrigues, born 1949, was killed by a handgrenade thrown hastily through a window, after first breaking its glass panes, by the fleeing soldiers at 1 am on January 16. The grenade did not explode fully. As she was rushed to the Margao Hospital, Luzy repeatedly asked for water. She was conscious till her very last moment and asked in agony ? and astonishment, ? What is happening to me?? She passed away at 4: 20 am. Luzy was 11 days shy of her thirteenth birthday. Luzy was a pretty and smart girl, very much admired in the village. At her young age, she was studying in the second year of Lyceum. The jawans acted in anger against the victim's father, Manuel Santana Rodrigues, following an argument at the latter?s provisions store (porsoro)over packets of cigarettes around 10 pm on January 15. The jawans demanded more packets and the owner said he didn?t have any. They returned that night at Manuel Santana?s house, which is far from where his store stands till today. As was his habit, he was reading his newspaper under a lamp. His wife, Milagrina, on hearing some noises outside the house, called out, ?Konn thuem?? ( Who?s there?). In a flash, a hand-grenade came through the window and landed between the girl?s legs, dismembering them at the knees, while younger sister Jacinta (7), who slept on the same bed, escaped with just her dress getting burnt. Other sister Alice and youngest brother Lawrence (now deceased) slept in the same bedroom. Luzy was fourth of seven siblings, three girls and four boys, in the Rodrigues household. This first civilian crime by jawans in post-Liberated Goa is considered by many pro and anti-Liberation Goans as a black mark in the state?s Liberation history. The Indian media did not report on it till February. Luzy?s ill-fated death became a rallying cry for those who opposed the Indian military action. There were black flag demonstrations in many parts of Goa on the day of Luzy's funeral, held in the evening. The jawans were later traced as a shoe belonging to one of them was left behind when they ran up the hill to the Dabolim airport and disappeared. Family members fail to recollect if the soldiers were ever court-martialled. One Goan writer, who was pro-Portuguese, reported in his book that the soldiers were let off without any punishment. Jacinta recollects that her mother saying that she was not interested in any compensation as no amount of money would bring her daughter back. The military governor, Lieutenant General K P Candeth, called the murder a regrettable incident?. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
[Goanet] Goan politics
With one party seen as going on a looting spree,, nepotism in alloting seats in elections, facilitating illegal mining and corruption on an unprecedented scale, Christians in Goa are faced with a choice between the devil or the deep blue sea. As an impartial observer of politics in Goa and India, I wont be surprised if there is a sea change in the political face of Goa The electorate is not stupid. Time will tell if it is politics as usual or an upsetting of the apple cart. [Goanet] A forgotten story of Liberation (Eugene Correia)
This is called ultra brainwashing which is unfortunately even happening today. This effect has left many Goan writers and on this forum with pea nut brains. BC However six years down the line, when I changed my role from a student to a teacher, patriotism was the flavour of the day with all the national days being celebrated with gusto and pride. The anti Indian attitude of the students has now disappeared. This could be the result of the many programmes organized by schools at the instance of the Department of Education and also because the present day students are distanced from the events prior to and during liberation. --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] As The Great Goan Carnival Unfolds
As The Great Goan Carnival Unfolds The election dates are all set and the monkeys are up and about jumping from branch to branch, tree to tree. I am not so sure if they are in heat and looking for a mates or just suitors, buffet tables or freebees ? At the moment it looks like the MGP is still not sure who will make a better bed partner, the Congress or the BJP and are probably looking towards astrology to guide them to contentment. The UGDP and the GVP too are undecided whether to tie the knot or not, even though they are still rolling in the hay. The Congress is being torn apart by its own heavy weights and they are reluctant to declare their candidates just yet but once they do, expect all hell to break loose within the Congress. The BJP on the other hand are acquiring minority rights trying to field minority candidates to woo minority votes to rectify their misfired or rather backfired Hindutva ideology. Not to be undone by the Italian Behenji, the Bong baby from Kolkota has Free Willy in her sight; Goa could yet be called Dakxinn Banga. It's a pity that after a lot of promise the GRA too has had marital problems in their early marriage and contesting the elections separately. This time round a lot of solo artists are planning to give the parties a real run for their money, if not run them out altogether. Is Goan politics heading in the right direction ? In Goa Elections are like the Carnival, there are personalities, there is flare, both are extravaganzas, both are watched with equal zest and zeal, mass participation, a lot of money flowing and clowns a plenty on all sides. The carnival has really begun in Goa, masks, make up kits and the different costumes are available in plenty, to hide their obvious aberrations from the public eye. They will all try to display passion and gusto to cover up their obscure vision and an unending trail of soon to be forgotten promises will follow. King Momo and his brigade of jokers will line in and zoom on at every possible doorstep and street corner to perform acts of charity, acts of compassion, acts of generosity, acts of patriotism or any other acts that will impress the local populace with their guile and deviousness. Money has already started flowing out of every political well, like oil flowing from the Gulf. Business for Bars and restaurants has started booming, free food is being served and liquor too has started flowing like water from a stream, even though a large amount of liquor has already been seized by the authorities. The slogan is eat, drink and be merry at our cost but be certain that Goa and Goans will pay and pay very dearly, as we have been paying all these years. It is nothing new, this is exactly the sequence of events that has occurred during every election, so far we have been naïve to fall prey to the phony generosity of our corrupt politicians and keep on electing them term after term. It's time for Goans to seriously think, not only of their future but also about the future of their children and the generations to come. Think straight and think hard because if this opportunity is lost, be assured we will have nothing left to fight for in 2017. If we Goans fall prey to the dirty conniving tactics of these corrupt politicians yet again, it will most certainly not be a comedy by errors but rather tragedy by design. [Goanet] Wendell Rodricks, Damodar Mauzo, Sudhir Kakkar invited to Jaipur Literary Festival
--- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
Re: [Goanet] Zanzibar - Goans and the 1964 Revolution
For those interested in the history of Zanzibar and its revolution and want to weigh in on the opinions of Francis DeLima, here are two excellent web resources: http://www.zanzibarhistory.org/zanzibar_revolution.htm http://www.zanzinet.org/zanzibar/history/historia.html#colony It is apparent that although DeLima's Babu and gang were planning a revolution, it was Julius Neyere who was the main supporter and backer. Despite this, it is turned out that it was John Okello an outsider (whom DeLima makes no mention of) and his rag-tag band of less than 60 men who were responsible. The violent events that unfolded, overtook both Babu and Nyerere who were caught with their pants down by the events initiated by Okello and his stevedores. The Goan population of Zanzibar was approx 581 in 1958. That would be much less than the number of Goans in one five storied circular building (Jer Mahal) in Dhobitalao in the same year. Roland. Without wanting to take sides in what looks like yet another fine goa-goan tiff about who's sitting higher on the moral high ground: I visited the Andamans (and thanks the Shipping Corporation of India's TSS Nancowry even Car Nicobar!) in 1981 for a few weeks, and I must say, I found myself transported back in the blessed times of the colonies. The Indian presence there was benevolent, but had really all the trappings of 'mission civilisatrice' viz 'the white man's burden' (now with a slightly darker skin ;-) I had a great time, and this was way before the tourist invasion (the first surfing boards for the newly opened stared beach resort were carried on the same ship) and for me it was really, as it's called in the Dutch remembering of the Netherlands Indies (Indonesia), tempo doeloe (blessed unhurried times). But yes, the 'colonial atmosphere' was very much there... [Goanet] Fw: VOTING FOR CHANGE
PRIEST STANDING FOR ELECTION Normally, the State and religion should be kept away from each other. But in our politricks, they are overtly and covertly merged. Another good reason to welcome this is that the ten commandments and peace be with you is generally acknowleged only in Church and hypocritically not outside? So, a good priest getting into gutter politics may be a positive influence to bring change in ethics and what is right. God's laws which the faithful follow, are written on earth, by inspired disciples and holy people, and surely State laws, human rights and ethical behaviour should not be different. Good behavior and morality in Church should not be separated/ forgotten outside its precincts? People electing an inspired priest against the power of money ,crime, nepotism and base instincts maybe just the remedy to start a revolution, at this time and place. Well known Fr Bismark's election will put to test the faith and honesty of people of Comburjua. He will no doubt be attacked and villified like Anna Hazare and IAC members, and anyone who challenges the State or the present System.
Dear Friends, I am glad to inform you that CLP/Instituto Camões will be screening the film “O Cônsul de Bordéus”, directed by João Correa and Francisco Manso (2011), 120mns, with English subtitles, on the 21st January 2012 (Saturday), at 4.00 pm, at the Instituto Camões premises. Plot: Alexandra Schmidt, a Portuguese journalist, travels to Viana do Castelo, to interview the conductor Fran¬cisco de Almeida, who is going to retire. There she faces him with his real name, Aaron Apelman, which is not reported in official biographies. The journalist’s curiosity makes the conductor recall a series of events that occurred in the remote month of June 1940, when, at the age of ten and still bearing that name, he was saved from the nazi persecution by the action of Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Por¬tuguese consul in Bordeaux. In those days the consul is a torn man: he knows that the Jewish refugees need more and more visas to get to Portugal and leave from there to the New World; but he is hindered by Salazar’s document, the infamous Circular 14, which forbids the grant of visas to Jews…. See you soon. -- Delfim Correia da Silva Director Centro de Língua Portuguesa/Instituto Camões Agva House, 9/32 Dr.Dada Vaidya Road Panaji 403 001 Goa - India 0091 832 6647737 0091 832 2422237 --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] Goa BJP hits poll gear without main candidate (IANS)... Goa leaders hope for divine help, fund pilgrimages
Goa BJP hits poll gear without main candidate Indo-Asian News Service Panaji, January 17, 2012 For the first time in more than a decade, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa has stepped into poll gear without projecting its chief ministerial candidate. After propping up its poster boy, technocrat Manohar Parrikar, as the undisputed chief ministerial candidate for more than a decade now, the opposition BJP has now said the slot was open and they would be finalising a candidate soon. We have all options open. As and when we decide on we will let you know, Arun Jaitley, a top party leader and leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has said in the presence of Parrikar and three-time MP from North Goa Shripad Naik, who has been challenging Parrikar's authority on state turf. Naik, a former union minister of state for civil aviation, told IANS he was keen on re-entering state politics and even identified the newly created assembly constituency of Porvorim - this is the first election after the delimitation of constituencies - as his favoured seat. I am waiting for the party to take a decision. If they approve my coming to state politics or not, I will go as per what they say, Naik said. Parrikar has meanwhile scoffed at reports of a rift between the two, calling it a figment of media imagination. Both Naik and Parrikar were the cornerstones around which the party was built through the 1980s in Goa. Naik has a following among the Bahujan Samaj, essentially the large-in-number Bhandari community, which is a significant vote block spread liberally throughout the state. Parrikar has been the acceptable face of the party, with a diehard following among the intelligentsia and the upper class and is a draw even among Christian voters, who account for nearly 25% of Goa's vote pie. Party sources said the rift between the two could affect the party's electoral chances and cloak-and-dagger between the two factions during the poll run-up was already affecting intra-party discipline. Both leaders appeal significantly to different sections of society and the party cannot afford to antagonise either. We are working on a compromise formula which may be acceptable to both, a senior BJP functionary said. Polls to the 40 constituencies in Goa will be held March 3. The BJP currently has 12 seats in the assembly. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Goa/Goa-BJP-hits-poll-gear-without-main-candidate/Article1-798360.aspx * * * Goa leaders hope for divine help, fund pilgrimages IANS Panaji: Politicians in Goa have suddenly begun sponsoring pilgrimages to Hindu and Christian religious sites with gusto - possibly hoping for divine intervention in the March 3 polls. Both aspiring candidates as well as Election Commission officials acknowledge that Hindu and Christian voters were being sponsored for pilgrimages to Shirdi in Maharashtra - known as the destination of Sai Baba devotees - and to Vailankanni in Tamil Nadu, a famous pilgrimage site for Christians. Yes, we conducted a raid on three buses with passengers headed for Shirdi. We had received a complaint that a political party had sponsored the trip to Shirdi, chief electoral officer S. Kumaraswamy said on Monday. The authorities let the passengers go on with the pilgrimage after verifying the travel details with the agent who did the booking for the tour. Such trips to Shirdi as well as to the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health at Vailankanni have not been uncommon over the past year, but there has been a sudden surge, with politicians and ticket aspirants hoping to convert the currency of faith into votes. The travel arrangement, food and staying quarters are all sponsored. Generally a lot of women of the house opt for these trips. It is a weekend away from home and it is a pilgrimage. Who does not like going on a pilgrimage? the 'travel agent' of a legislator from north Goa told IANS. Pilgrimages are conducted in jeeps, with five to six to the unit, and by busloads. And the pilgrims return home after a three-day-two-night trip with more than just blessings. We often give a few days of rations, essentials like dals, rice, oil and a household utility like a fan or thermos on return. The per person cost is around Rs.4,000 overall, which is sponsored, an organiser of one of these tours said. For the pilgrims, however, a trip to their deity is enough to wash off all possible sins, which perhaps also includes accepting the not too subtle bribe by the aspiring politician who is sponsoring the tour. Former tourism minister Mathany Saldanha, who became one of the first big ticket Christian leaders to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last week, said sponsoring of religious pilgrimages was a leveller of sorts. People say the BJP is communal. But look at this - people from both the Congress and the BJP are sponsoring pilgrimages to Shirdi and Vailankanni. No one is communal any more! Saldanha said.

[Goanet] THERE SHOULD BE NO ROOM FOR DYNASTY POLITICS
Individuals should never venture to be bigger than the political party they belong to. But this is exactly what we are seeing within the Congress party in Goa. Politicians trying to form their own groups within the party. It is infact parties within a party. If this current trend of dynasty politics continues a handful of families may soon hold the reigns and take this State from disaster to doom. Dynasty rule is contrary to the very tenet of democracy. If these tendencies are not curbed or nipped in the bud such leaders could be a liability and hold the party to ransom. Despite being in power for so many years, not having their own “Congress Bhavan” is evidence of their lack of concern for their party. They still languish in that rented hole opposite the Panaji ferry wharf which was given a long overdue face lift some years ago. The office only comes alive at election time with the scrambling and squabbling for a party ticket. But finally only the powerful and well connected make it while the loyalists are destined only to lock and unlock the Congress office while also having to ensure that it is kept tidy and going. And where party indiscipline and internal bickering is concerned the Congress in Goa has no competitor to match. Even a tanker of fervicol will not bond them together. Re: [Goanet] A forgotten story of Liberation (Eugene Correia)
: ) , : ). Possibly both. Both lead to the same conjecture, frak menu (weak brain)! Pea (sized) nut (brain) // peanut (small brain) brains (reiterated, or a minor error) Brain the size of pea. (Lacking depth, analytical chops). The other possibility would be the polystyrene peanuts used in packaging! That would be a goo one too. Or as we said at JJ (not the Aspatal/Ospital/hospital) in Marathi: Gudgyat mendu (brains in the knees). Never thought that for me post 50 would be such bliss. venantius j pinto Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2012 19:17:35 +0530 From: Frederick FN Noronha ? *??? ??? fredericknoro...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [Goanet] A forgotten story of Liberation (Eugene Correia) On 18 January 2012 17:45, Bernado Colaco ole_...@yahoo.co.uk wrote: This effect has left many Goan writers and on this forum with pea nut brains. Re: [Goanet] A forgotten story of Liberation (Eugene Correia)(Ole_Xac)
My dear Tonybab, It is true that the posts of Ole_Xac i.e. BC are, almost always, nonsensical and whimsical. However, (I ask) is he really wrong in classifying what you have described in your immediately preceding post as 'brainwashing'? jc --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
