RESPONSE:-

Roland,

Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God...

Nice analogy; I was at the meeting when it was proposed to sell the Club
House and Grounds, it was fait acompli, so there is nothing to be sad
about, I had abstained but did not object, as there was no viable way
forward, we had come to the end of the road. It is true that to this day
there are many, including me, who have nostalgic feelings about the Club
House and there is a tinge of sadness. To my knowledge it was only one
Person who wrote to the membership claiming that it was "a God send". To
this day the majority of the members are nonchalant about the whole episode
and do not see any progress despite assertions that sterling work is being
done by the Association.

My grouse was that persons who do not know the history, would feel that we
only lost the Club House because of an arson attack. The proceeds of the
Insurance monies and the of the sale of the Grounds were invested in a Flat
in East London. That was the easy bit, the hunt for Office space has
probably been put on the back burner. Quo Vadis is the tougher bit and
there is nothing, not even in the distant horizon.

Folks,
I read an article a few weeks ago that made me smile as it claimed that
the, "Nigerian 419 scam" is set up so as to quickly identify the gullible
and the greedy.

If anyone answers the 'too good to be true' email with questions, the
intended victim is quickly weeded out and dropped as the fraudster will
not invest his time on a person that asks too many questions.

The "Sad trip, I lost all my money," scam preys on another sentiment and
includes the all important element of urgency. This time the fraudster is
willing to give an answer to all questions as he knows he is only investing a
day or two before he gets your cash.

The lesson here is that those who ask questions, do not lose their money.
And by extension, the more successful people are those who keep on asking
questions.

[Goanet] Beginning to see things for what they are_but may not be that easily apparent

2012-08-04 Thread Venantius J Pinto
I find the following comments from Saina Nehwal veery revealing and
heartening too. It seems as though that finally more Indians (as recently
observed in other circumstances) are slowly beginning to see things for
what they are: their strengths and weaknesses; what they need to rectify
(attempt to) and are saying things (being true to their beings), their
handlers may not like to hear. Such expressions help the largely fearful,
frivolous and those who descent with regularity in to the bathetic (a fall
from grace/ a moving away from grace, if you will!)--see that things can be
done differently while also protecting oneself.

I remember while in Japan in 2008 during the Beijing Olympics, myself
attempting to shed light on some issues that cropped up on Chinese
athletes.

+

"Wang was too fast for me. She put me under pressure with her with parallel
game. I should have slowed down things but failed to do it," said Saina.

"I tried hard in some areas but she just did not allow me to settle down.
Wang was finishing off the points quickly and I could not counter that kind
of a game," explained Saina further.

Talking about her performance, Wang said: "I will try to get the gold medal
but I will also try to enjoy myself on the court."

"After winning this match, I have got more confidence now," added Wang.

[Goanet] Reservations of Seats in Buses

2012-08-04 Thread Ana Maria de souza-Goswami
I agree with Nelson Lopes that conductors don't enforce the above. Many a
time when I've used the bus, I demand that a man gets up from a seat 'Ladies
Only', and they do. Once I took a bus from Mapusa to Moira. It was going to
Aldona. Their were old ladies standing.
I told a man to get up, one of them did, told the other also. He refused.
The bus conductor said, in not so many words, you are paying a Rs. 10/-
ticket, this lady will file a complaint and I'll have to pay Rs. 800/-. He
got up. Gave the seats to those two old ladies. I told them you have a
right, exercise it.

[Goanet] For Kind Favour of Publication - 'Anna Hazare' and his 'New Political Alternative'

2012-08-04 Thread floriano

August 4, 2012

To,
The Editor,
Navhind Times,
Panjim.

Sir,

Subject: 'Anna Hazare' and his 'New Political Alternative'

It was a treat to go through most of the English Dailies commenting on the
subject of "Pros and Cons of Anna going for a New Political Alternative",
and, by and large, I have settled for the base line projected by the
Navhind Times' Edit "Anna's New Adventure", which ends like this:
" People do not choose their representative on moral lines. They choose them
for their social pride (caste), efficiency and delivery (on private causes),
protection and other values. And they do not mind if their representative
makes more money than he should "

However, I should like to think that the 'Editor' did have no 'gender malice'
when he said 'he' (as above) and is believed to be universal in his
understanding that people's representatives come in both genders, and, where
the female ones, especially, have been topping in this excellence of making
more money than men ever thought about .. Example: 'Mayavati-bhen' of UP.

From the very start, when Anna Hazare embarked on his nation-wide IAC
campaign, trying to put the Parliament in a 'Straight-Jacket' with his
passion 'the Jan-Lok Pal Bill', I had thought that he was committing
suicide, or, was trying to tie-up the Nation's Parliament to a dead tree
and flog it, like he did the drunks of his hometown ' RALEGAN SIDDHI '. He
should have had better sense to realize what the Editor of Navhind Times
has said as quoted above.

I do not, for a moment, fault Anna Hazare for wanting to establish a new
political alternative. In fact, in those early days, I had said, many a
times, that he should sit around the drawing board to draw up the new
political outfit that will have included the Jan Lok Pal Bill as well as all
other Bills that are required for this Nation to walk the straight talk, in
fact, a LEGO excellence, where every single piece fitted well into the
scheme of things and not fool himself to be considered a HERO, awash in
lime-light, a second Gandhi in the making to the milling crowds which have
ultimately done the vanishing act.

I am of the belief that there has to be a CLEAN SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE. And
that, this Clean System of Governance must be built on 'Self-sacrifice',
'Dedication' and 'Commitment' to the State, Nation, and to NONE ELSE, in
such a manner that there are no loop-holes left for the self-motivated
governance wizards (of which this nation is full to the brim and would be
the envy of the world if it was in this export trade) to move in-and-out at
will, holding the Courts of Law and the People of this nation to ransom. And
when I say that there are no SAINTS on EARTH but only in Heaven, it
explains everything. Crooks are the foremost to be drawn towards politics
like the insects to light. And most often the political set-ups, aka
political parties, are provided by the CROOKS themselves which attract more
CROOKS, not by dozens but by tons. The only way to keep the crooks at bay,
or if enlisted, keep them on a leash, is the SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE which
cannot be manipulated. ever. There is no guarantee that efforts will not
be made to subvert the SYSTEM. But like in the words of First Premier of
Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Hu - they will get frustrated and leave by
themselves through the back doors.

It would be another matter altogether if I was talking in air. Many people
do just that consuming a lot of newsprint which has gone, and will go, in
the waist baskets or to the local Bajjia wallas for food wraps. No, I have
gone one step ahead and helped to set-up a SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE for this
small state of GOA that not even wizards like 'CHARLES SOBHRAJs' can seek
to manipulate and get away with, a SYSTEM that has been designed and
tailor-made for GOA .in the name and style of GOA SU-RAJ PARTY, where those
who would want to promote their own causes at the cost of state are extended
the first invitations to come in and to try their luck.

Anna Hazare and his illustrious TEAM should endeavour to put in place such a
SIMPLE and UNCOMPLICATED system of governance so that even the most
strictest of JAN LOK PAL BILLS will be made redundant and unnecessary.

The guiding principle of 'SPARE THE ROD AND SPOIL THE CHILD' must be the
essence of such an exercise which is most often thought and/or found to be
UNDEMOCRATIC.

And, this will be the one and only test to find out how many people in
this nation are non-corrupt and non-corruptible.

Muscat: Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has reportedly assured a panel
of parliamentarians on easing the Central Board of Excise & Customs
department's baggage allowance regulations, which forbid non-resident
Indian (NRI) passengers from taking back gold jewellery worth more than
Rs10,000 (RO75) for men and Rs20,000 (RO150) for women.

"Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh has assured us that he will initiate steps to
amend the age-old gold duty exemption limit. He has assured us that
amendments will be made in such a way that duty calculation will be made
on the basis of quantity and not on the basis of the gold price rate,-
 P. Rajeev, an Indian Parliament member, told Times of Oman
over phone.

India's
Central Board of Excise and Customs, which falls under its Ministry of
Finance, stipulates that "an Indian passenger who has been residing
abroad for over one year is allowed to bring jewellery, free of duty in
his bona fide baggage up to an aggregate value of Rs10,000 (in the case
of a male passenger) or Rs20,000 (in the case of a lady passenger).-

Going
by the existing gold rates, women of "world's most gold crazy nation-
can bring into country only 7.1 gm of gold ornaments duty free. For men,
the limit is 3.5 gm! Anything above that miserly limit is taxable under
the Indian law, and if you're passing through the green channel with
more than a few grams of gold, then the officer in-charge will be well
within his rights to ask you to pay duty on the jewellery and/or face
prosecution for trying to "smuggle- gold and evade duty.

Though
the Indian Custom Baggage Rules of 1998 were amended by the finance
ministry in 2006, the limits for duty-free jewellery imports were left
untouched.

Adding to the woes of the passengers, the Centre, in
its last budget revised the duty rates for excess gold carried in person
from Rs750 (RO5) per 10 gm to the ad valorem rate of 10 per cent of the
value of the ornaments plus three per cent of the duty as education
cess. So a passenger wearing a gold chain weighing five sovereigns
(40gm) would have to pay Rs11,515 (RO80) as customs duty.

"I had
to pay around Rs20,000 (RO150) at Thiruvananthapuram airport. The
government is exploiting us with the help of an age-old law. I saw many
who were stranded at airport without having enough money to pay duty,-
Wilson Mathew, who travelled to Thiruvananthapuram from Muscat last
week, told Times of Oman.

"It is a shame that our government is
sticking to a 1967 rule related to gold when the gold prices have
skyrocketed in recent years,- Wilson said, adding that he saw a lot
people giving the gold to the officials to keep it in the lockers at the
airport, which they can collect while returning back.

Meanwhile,
the customs officials have now made it mandatory for the NRIs to
declare the amount of gold they have before they leave India, as they
can avoid paying duty on this when they return. Even if the passengers
lose the receipts provided by the officials, their declaration details
can found by the official as digital details will be stored by the
officials.

Recently, the government reduced the maximum allowable
limit of importing gold as part of baggage from 10kg per passenger to
1kg and there are certain conditions set by the government to import
gold as baggage.

[Goanet] A Spoke in the Wheel: review

2012-08-04 Thread dale luis menezes
IN SEARCH OF DHAMMA
By
DALE LUIS MENEZES

• If change could be brought by a king,
why did the Buddha become a beggar? (p. 382)

• The Buddha preached his Way, they went theirs (p. 334)

Before Hinduism, in Ancient South Asia, Buddhism was a major religion. What the
common man as well as the student of history knows about Buddhism has come,
generally, from the old Jataka story of how the Buddha who was a prince was
isolated from all the ills of the world and a chance encounter with old-age,
sickness and death transforms his whole life, eventually leading to his
enlightenment. Sadly for all of us this legend has been – verbatim – passed off
as history. The Buddha is viewed as godhead, when charting the history of
Buddhism with the actual historical processes that the Buddha as a person had
experienced, given scant attention.

How we understand and construct the history of Buddhism (or for that matter the
history of any other religion of Ancient India) is on many occasions found to
be lacking in a rigorous imagination coupled with erudition. While studying
Buddhism, I have always felt that the thrust is on the philosophy (and
sometimes only philosophy!) rather than the historical conditions that required
such ideologies and philosophies – such as Buddhism – to be produced. Hence,
when I read the debut novel of the Goan writer and academic Amita Kanekar, now
based in Miramar, I felt that my knowledge and imagination about the Buddha in
particular and the historical setting of Ancient India in general was enriched.

A Spoke in the Wheel (2005) by Amita Kanekar, to be simply put, is a novel
about the Buddha and Buddhism along with other historical personages. In
attempting the portraits of such historical personages like the Buddha and the
Emperor Asoka, Amita Kanekar also interrogates the history of that time as well
as critically examines the conventional wisdom that has been handed down to us.
(In particular, the thrust is towards rethinking the whole nationalist
historiography and construction of Ancient Indian history).

The protagonist of the novel is a monk named Upali, who has been commissioned
by the great Emperor Asoka himself to produce a biography of the Buddha in
prose. The novel opens in 256 BC, four years after the bloodshed in Kalinga and
three centuries after the death of the Buddha. Upali, a native from Kalinga,
had witnessed first-hand the destruction of Asoka’s military campaign there. He
is now based in a small monastery, in the middle of a thick and treacherous
jungle. Upali is portrayed as a scholastic who has to work with legends or
suttas which contain several discrepancies in their content as a primary
source. He is caught between providing a faithful account of the life of the
Buddha as well as staying loyal to the spirit that Gautam, the Enlightened One,
had embodied. He is an upstart, getting into frequent arguments with the elders
on the finer theoretical points of the Buddha’s life.

Upali, through his keen, interrogative mind and fearless questioning of the
handed-down-wisdom manages to produce an account that shocks and revolts a lot
of elder monks. But the Emperor Asoka likes it. A Spoke in the Wheel gives a
picture of the time when the first largest empire in history was consolidated
in South Asia; the author describes the cities, the people and the social
atmosphere in which the daily business was carried out with much élan. The
Mauryan Empire under Asoka was vast containing equally varied identities:
tribal, caste and class. Amita Kanekar is not just writing a novel, but is also
arguing, informing and providing an alternate view of the history of Buddhism
and Ancient India. For instance, consider the very popular myth about the
84,000 stupas that were constructed by Asoka. She says, “…since he ruled some
thirty-seven years, averages 2,270 each year, or more than six a day, a feat
clearly impossible for anyone not Beloved of the Gods.”

Did the Buddha really lead a sheltered life totally buffered from the harsh
realities of the world? Amita Kanekar argues otherwise, “He probably led the
most luxurious life possible, but it was not that of a lotus-eater. Otherwise
Shudodhan [Buddha’s father] could never have hoped to make his son Chief after
him. It was a time of confusion, even chaos, and a Chief had to at least
understand both the old and the new divides, to defend his own interests and
also swing popular feeling behind him. It was a tall order, as Shudodhan knew
only too well.”

It is also interesting to note how perfectly Amita Kanekar weaves the
importance of iron in the whole narrative. Yes, although this ubiquitous dark
metal transformed our society and history, sadly this is not taken into much
consideration by most established scholarship when discussing the history of
Buddhism. Amita Kanekar’s concern and commitment to the cause of the subaltern
is se

[Goanet] Sad Trip.................I Need Your Help!!!.....(Alda Figueiredo)

2012-08-04 Thread manuel tavares
Hi Goanet readers,

Please see the the above mentioned subject. This is a scam. Please do not
respond to such SAD letters. People are being conned by unscrupulous characters
who are writing the same kind of letters. My nephew was the subject of such a
letter claiming that he was on holiday in Mexico and was mugged and requesting
for funds. In fact, my nephew at the time was here in Canada and had not
travelled to Mexico as alleged.

Please treat these letters as garbage.

I would request Goanet to please not publish these letters as they are a big
scam.

Thanks.
Manuel (Eddie) Tavares

RESERVATION OF SEATS IN BUSES
The public transport in Goa has a laudable objective. Seats are reserved
for Senior Citizens,Ladies, physically handicapped They are more than often
occupied by others. The traffic inspectors never ever check this misuse of
facility provided, even when their attention is pointedly drawn to it .
Issue of tickets , uniforms, identity of the ticket collector are settled
cooly. They check for over crowding vigorously and then documents behind
the bus. Blaring and deafening Music in full volume starts once they leave
the city check posts. Smoking is another prohibitive offence annoying to
those who cannot stand it .The conductor refuses to take action on the bus
reservations asking the passenger to handle it themselves. It can create a
commotion between passengers demanding to enforce the regulation The
reserved seat at all times must be occupied by specifically such passengers
entitled to. Otherwise it must be booked as an offence with fines, The
question of seats going ewmpty is a far fetched possibility, when the buses
are packed like sardines The traffic inspectors must pay attention or get
the provision anulled
