[Goanet] GIVE MY GOA A HOLIDAY

2012-09-21 Thread U. G. Barad
My response:
I did not understand the usage of the words reading 'at least for 5 years'.
Why not forever? I don't think it takes 5 years to assess the loot, plunder,
gains and to set a transparent future road map! Incidentally, I recollect,
ex-chief minister Digu spent lakhs of rupees in getting the future road map
for Goa through Dr. Mashelkar at. el. Is it not okay for Goa? OR the author
is trying to suggest the Goa government to set up an Exploitative
Development Commissioner? I'm confused hence request the author of the
message to elaborate on these related issues without using offensive
language!

Best regards,

[Goanet] People flock to Goa for Lord Ganesh festival by Gabe Menezes

2012-09-21 Thread Bernice Pereira
The Lord Ganesh festival is the most important one for the Hindus in Goa...in
fact the whole of Goa celebrates it, and it is understandable that people flock
to Goa during this time.  However, what is most difficult is the week between
Christmas and New Year where the roads are so choked that it is impossible to
move.  If there is an medical emergency, the patient would die in the traffic
jam itself.  Can't any curbs be put on thousands of people entering Goa during
this time.

[Goanet] Seminar on Portugese citizenship (Response to Roland Francis by Rose Fernandes)

2012-09-21 Thread Melvyn Fernandes
Dear Roland

Unlike most countries, India has no dual citizenship (you are either Indian or
you are not). We do have the facility to apply for documents PIO (Person of
Indian Origin) or OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) to enable all of us living
overseas to keep our link with our villages on the Indian Sub-Continent. I know
of
Indian Nationals with Jumbo passports who carry their Jumbo passports with
pride as they travel from country to country on business. The visa hassle is
quite
normal as each country has to check that the people being allowed in are
genuine with no criminal or other intentions.

In the present world, all passengers travelling need to provide information
requested on APIS (Advanced Passenger Information System), in addition, those
travelling to America have to inform authorities on-line on ESTA (Electronic
System for Travel Authorisation).

I am not sure what the reasons are why elements of our community are leaving
Goa, the rule is as soon as you get a Portuguese Passport you need to leave the
country within 45 days as you have chosen to no longer be a national of India
and hence not the responsibility of the Indian Government. Being a Portuguese
National and then applying for OCI/PIO is a different matter. Those who have
not surrendered their Indian Passport face fines of over 1,000 GBP when found
out.

Interested readers may wish to refer to the following websites:

http://www.immihelp.com/nri/dual.html

Under paragraph Automatic termination of Indian citizenship - see the wording
on stamp on passport

Every state in India has an NRI office that looks after the interests of the
state and its sons and daughters abroad. In Goa there is the Goa Card issued by
the
Director of NRI Affairs, Government of Goa, the main purpose is to speed up
dealings with government officers, discounts at hotels and other benefits
including
hospitals as it is appreciated visitors have a short time in Goa on their
vacation.

In your goanet posting you have written:

Quote: ..others may not be looking for an immigration path at all. There
are Bombay Goans I know who go to Europe frequently on business as well as
pleasure and complain about the visa procedural hassles for Indian passport
holders. An EU passport will avoid all of this, not to mention the not
inconsiderable visa costs involved. That the latter will have to conceal their
EU passports until they travel, is neither here nor thereUnquote

Indian Nationals require just ONE Schengen Visa to travel to 22 Schengen Visa
Countries who are members of the European Union (EU) and four who are non-
EU members. These countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark,
Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia,
Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland,
Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The following European countries are not a part of the Schengen zone, namely:
The UK, Ireland, Croatia, Cyprus, Romania, Serbia, Bosnia Herzgovina,
Belarus, Macedonia, Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. If you want to travel to or
even pass through any of these by train, bus or car, you will have to apply to
the
concerned country for a separate visa

Readers can obtain information on a Shengen Visa on the following websites:
http://www.letstravelzine.com/schengenvisaforindians.html
http://indiancompass.com/2012/05/schengen-visa-which-european-country-to-apply-from/

I do not feel that the organisers of the Seminar on Portuguese Citizenship are
aiming for a target audience of Indian citizens who would like EU passports as
they travel frequently on business/pleasure, so that they can conceal this EU
Passport until travel, in order avoid visa and procedural hassles.

Goa has been the most favoured tourist destination and the perceived haven
for the rest of India which looks at owning a peice of land by the sea side.
Goa has now earned the reputation of being the third favoured destination
for call girls while it has always enjoyed being on the top of the charts
for booze. The heavy top governance and indiscriminate infrastructure
development has warranted the necessity to boost the economy thereby selling
Goa to the highest bidder in the market. Goa has received a terrible
pounding for building the mineral reserves of China and Japan and
entertaining the fun seeking tourist. It is difficult to even audit the
amount of destruction because the rape of Goa is proceeding at break neck
speed. Everyone wants a chunk of that Goa by hook or by crook. The Goan is
crushed in the bargain. Goa's culture is not enriched by the intermingling
of cultures but destroyed by the 'ghatiya' cultures that seek only pleasure
and profits. The Goan native is spurned as lazy and a boozard. The Goan
aunty is the neighbours envy for entertainment. It is only a matter of a
couple of years before the camel enters the tent and displaces the Goan.
This is the cap on Goan population that the Government is talking about.
This is about NEO-COLONISATION
Goa is tired. Goa needs some time free from mining, tourism, real estate and
migrants. At least for 5 years within which time the loot, plunder and gains
get assessed and the future road map is made definite and transparent. MY
GOA NEEDS A LONG HOLIDAY from Exploitative Development.

Re: [Goanet] Seminar on Portuguese citizenship (Response to Roland Francis by Rose Fernandes)

2012-09-21 Thread Roland Francis
Hi Rose, thanks for that information of which I was indeed aware.

In India, there is massive disregard of the law. Combine lax enforcement and
bribe-taking with lack of voluntary compliance of rules and you have a
situation where the law is only a paper tiger.

In Goa, there are thousands of Portuguese passport holders who acquired
Portuguese nationality within the last 30 years who have not given up their
Indian citizenship although that is the law. Prominent Goa politicians and even
ministers have been reported in the Goa press as having Portuguese nationality
and yet not much is done about it. In such an atmosphere, do you really believe
that people applying for Portuguese passports are now suddenly complying with
India's dual nationality laws.

Who says India has no dual nationality? At least with 14 countries (or more),
India allows people of Indian origin with foreign nationalities to have OCI
status which is Indian citizenship minus the voting privilege. And therein lies
the answer to JC's contention in his latest post that Indian businessmen cannot
go to Europe on an EU passport and return on an Indian one.

Roland.

Re: [Goanet] THE DECAYING STATE OF POLITICS IN GOA (Soter)

2012-09-21 Thread soter
Dear Aires,
This is a democracy. Whether we like it or not, it is about WE THE PEOPLE. We
waste no time in demanding our constituional rights. How about enforcing our
constitutional duties? For We The People only know their rights to reservation,
schemes, doles... We are ignorant, or pretend that their
constitutional duties also exist. They seem to have been conveniently forgotten
by Dr. Ambedkar and fortunately got inserted by Indira Gandhi. The writing of
the Constituion has unfortunately become about Caste Pride and avenging
history while the letter and spirit has been forgotten.
There is nothing wrong with the poltician. There is defintiely something wrong
with our society. For the poltiicians emerges from the society and that family.
Deceiving and compromising attitudes are part of societal training since
childhood.
We cover our religious hatred with the flag of National Pride. let us look at
ourselves first and things will defintiely change by 2017.

[Goanet] See how Russian street artists shamed politicians into action

2012-09-21 Thread Olav Athayde

How daring street art fixed Russia’s broken roads

Fed up with politicians' worthless promises? Residents of the Russian city
of Yekaterinburg were – so they did something about it.

Across the world, from Uganda to Costa Rica to Russia, potholes have become
a metaphor for corrupt or ineffective government. Some have even been named
after the politicians who have failed to fix them. But in Yekaterinburg,
street artists took this notion one step further: they turned potholes into
caricatures of local officials.

Guess what? All the holes were repaired within 24 hours. Check out this
beautiful example of citizens forcing politicians to put their money where
their mouths are – literally

Comment: It may be an idea for Goans to use to fix the humungus problems of
corruption that we face on an everyday basis.

[Goanet] Wendell Rodricks' The Green Room to be released in Goa

2012-09-21 Thread Goanet A-C-E!
Wendell Rodricks' memoir titled The Green Room will be released by Amitav
Ghosh in Goa. Details as follows:

DATE : Tuesday, September 25, 2012

TIME : 5pm

VENUE: Broadway Book Centre, Level 3, Caculo Mall, St. Inez, Panaji, Goa

ABOUT THE BOOK

‘[A] fine writer with a very distinctive, natural voice... The Green Room
[is] a riveting read.’ — Amitav Ghosh, on www.amitavghosh.com/blog

‘A gripping and entertaining book... As someone who loves the fashion
industry and always aspired to be an insider, this is a delicious “inside”
look!’ — Sonam Kapoor

Epicurean, travel addict, voracious reader, art appreciator, astonishingly
talented designer—Wendell Rodricks is a man who wears many hats. From
growing up in a ‘glorified Bombay chawl’ crowded with eccentrics, to
building homes in Muscat, Istanbul and the French Riviera; from being a
novice in the hospitality industry, to exhibiting at Pret-a-Porter Salon de
Paris and IGEDO, Dusseldorf; from designing clothes for his family, to
dressing style icons such as Catherine Deneuve, Meg Ryan, Lisa Ray and
Freida Pinto—Wendell’s life has been an extraordinarily rich and exciting
one.

Peppered with wry observations and startling insights, The Green Room is not
just the story of one man but also of the evolution of the Indian fashion
industry over twenty-five years. It is both a deeply personal journey and a
window into the enchanting yet fickle world of the rich and the famous, the
beautiful and the neurotic, the gossips and the bores.

Candid, irreverent and unfailingly entertaining, this is a memoir of the man
who gave India minimalism, resort wear and eco-friendly clothing long before
these words became fashionable. It is a sparkling piece of writing that
tells the story of a fascinating life lived with unusual courage and flair.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Wendell Rodricks spent his childhood in Bombay and started his working life
in Muscat. He then moved to Los Angeles and Paris to study fashion design
and couture. He returned to India in 1988 and quickly gained repute as a
designer, working with renowned brands such as Garden Vareli, Lakme and De
Beers. He established his own label in 1990 and moved base in 1993 to
Colvale, Goa. A pioneer in the world of Indian fashion, Wendell is
considered one of the most influential designers in the country and has
received international acclaim for his work. Wendell also writes about
fashion and lectures on world costume history. His book on the history of
Goan costume, Moda Goa, was published in 2012. He is passionate about art,
music, literature, food, travel and Goa’s environment.
