[Goanet] END OF THE TUNNEL FOR ATMARAM NADKARNI

2020-06-30 Thread Aires Rodrigues
We need to commend the Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for having
taken the very right decision in dropping Atmaram Nadkarni as the
Additional Solicitor General of India. This was long overdue.

Atmaram Nadkarni who was known to be a side-kick of Manohar Parrikar moved
to Delhi after Parrikar’s appointment as Defence Minister with an eye on
becoming a Supreme Court Judge. Through Parrikar’s clout he managed to be
appointed as Additional Solicitor General and was also representing Goa in
the Supreme Court. But in July last year the Pramod Sawant government
sacked Atmaram Nadkarni from representing the State in the Supreme Court,
National Green Tribunal and Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal. The bankrupt
Goa Government even had the rank audacity of affording Atmaram Nadkarni an
unlimited State credit Card. What an economical shame and distress it was
for our already impoverished State.

Atmaram Nadkarni did everything possible to lobby an elevation to a Supreme
Court Judge but stands bumped out. I had earlier this year written to the
Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde and all the other 32 Supreme
Court Judges drawing their attention to Atmaram Nadkarni’s blatant acts of
omission and commission over the years as Advocate General of Goa and later
as Additional Solicitor General of India while giving them detailed reasons
as to why the name of the very awfully stained Atmaram Nadkarni should not
be considered for the coveted post as Supreme Court Judge.

The Supreme Court is the highest court within the hierarchy of courts and
hears cases of the greatest public and constitutional importance affecting
the whole population. It is for this reason that every officer of the court
must ensure that the integrity and sanctity of the Court is preserved at
all costs and be judicial in its proceedings without fear or favour and
without interference. To act otherwise, would be a catastrophic blunder and
an erosion of faith of the people who see the Supreme Court as their final
hope of justice.

If a person like Atmaram Nadkarni was allowed to occupy the August Chair as
Judge of India’s highest temple of Justice, the Supreme Court would have
been reduced to a den for fixing matters – and become a trader’s paradise.

When Jesus Christ drove away the traders and money changers from the temple
with a whip of cords, he said “my house shall be a house of prayer but you
have turned it into a den of thieves”.

Likewise, we cannot allow that Temple of Justice, the highest Court in the
land to be the evil den instead of dispensing prudent justice through the
appointment of Judges who are fair, impartial and not tainted in any
way. After all a leopard is not likely to change its spots. The Judiciary
must knock off tainted persons from the list of probables and avoid getting
its hands in dirt and muck.

Francis Bacon wisely observed: Judges ought to be more learned than witty,
more reverend than plausible and more advised than confident. But above
all things, integrity is their portion and proper virtue.

Integrity is a life where your beliefs and intentions are aligned with your
words and actions. If you don’t have integrity you have nothing. You can’t
buy it. You can have all the money in the world, but if you are not a moral
and ethical person, you really have nothing.

I tried googling for - who wrote "your quote" - and the best answers I got

this quote on more forums: if the quotation sites pick it up it might be
your real claim to eternal fame.

[Goanet] Red Light, Red Alert

2020-06-30 Thread Roland Francis
All the bible thumpers must be praising the glory of god and the downfall of
all the Jezebels, Salomés and Magdalenes.

I hope they will help them “find opportunities to gain new skills in lower risk
jobs” as recommended by the study.

If India's red-light districts reopen, there could be a staggering 400,000
infections and 12,000 Covid-19 deathsin a yearamong sex workers and people
living in those neighbourhoods in India, per projections by experts at Harvard
Medical School and Yale School of Medicine. The study made projections for 21
red-light areas, spanning across Maharashtra, Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh,
Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. And the experts have urged the government to
keep the areas shut as they could emerge as India's biggest hotspots.
Maharashtra would be one of the worst-affected states with 9,956 cases
projected — in Pune's Budhwar Peth, 4,795 cumulative cases, 688
hospitalisations, and 162 deaths. In Mumbai's Red-Light Area of Kamathipura,
Grant Road, and Faulkland Road, 3,494 cases, 486 hospitalisations, and 114
deaths. The GB Road area in the national Capital could experience 2,774 cases,
386 hospitalisations and 91 deaths in such a scenario.
"The combined features of a high volume of visitors, high contact rates,
potentially higher infectivity of sex workers, and long-distance travel of
clients across India may make the reopening of red-light areas a significant
risk... Moreover, visitors to red-light areas include many truck drivers and
migrant workers, who not only live locally but travel long-distances and can
potentially spread the virus more broadly," stated the website of Code Red
Coalition (CRC), where the key findings of the study were published. (CRC is a
global group of doctors and researchers that is advising governments on how to
prevent Covid-19 spread.)
Dr Sahayakan, a CRC member, added: "None of the protection measures like
distancing, masks, or sanitising can effectively stop Covid-19 transmission
during sex work. Sex work cannot be safely practiced in red light areas in
India given their nature."
The study also recommended that sex workers need opportunities to gain skills
that provide employment in lower-risk jobs.

[Goanet] Love in the time of Orchata!

2020-06-30 Thread Francis Rodrigues
Last night I dreamt I traipsed down to Fontainhas again
that beautiful Latin corner of Panjim, that is still old Portugal,
complete with faint strains of the fado emanating from the
pretty yellow houses, lining the quaint, narrow streets.

A light staccato Portuguese chatter in the air accompanies
a piano or two from the upstairs Academia da Musica. What
is it now - five decades, yet it lives in my river of dreams?

My best friend had a crush on Eunice Lima Fernandes. She was
very pretty, gorgeous lips, and he was besotted. He lived not too
far from her in Fontainhas, but as far as I was aware, worshipped
from afar. We had all joined Dhempe College in Miramar that year
of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. We had both begun Science.

Eunice was in the same year. Her brother Angelo was our hero's
good friend, though I doubt he knew lover boy was smitten. Just
me - and Ivo Guia-Furtado who played superb violin next to the San
Sebastian Chapel, naughty Carlos Albert opposite, 'Piqun' Armand
Aquino next door, and 'Baba' Servulo, the young guitarist enmeshed
daily in the pangs of his own unrequited love, even as nightly his
'Vandals' beat group tripped the light fantastic.

Fontainhas has changed since I dined there a few years ago. The
Academia moved to Campal, as the Kala Akademy. Hordes of
tourists trudge the narrow streets. The pretty young 'mistis' girl
pharmacist Jesuina is gone - I lost count of the number of razor
blades and toothpaste tubes we infatuated lads wastefully bought,
just to catch a flash of her eyes, and a hint of her dimpled smile. Of
course the rustic little bridge still straddles the creek like it does in
Alfama, Lisbon. And you can still hear the faint whisper of Portuguese.

Five decades have come and gone. The beautiful young damsel now
produces an original 'orchata', smooth as a summer breeze. How have
the years treated her? Memory illuminates beauty like an Old Master's
painting. The poet Robert Frost had a crush on a pretty thing called
Sabra, which went nowhere. He married his high school sweetheart.
Many decades later in a strange twist his secretary came across the
poet's letters, and found Sabra. I leave you to find out what happened
next. Who is lucky enough to marry their childhood crush? I did - that's
another story! What about our own hero? Well, he married another!

A dozen years ago, we met up abroad after almost four decades.
Of course, he remembered Eunice! But between us the mists of time
had drawn up an invisible curtain. From best friends, we carried on
a sporadic relationship, which stumbled on a petty disagreement one
cold winter evening, and we have not seen each other since. We
are just too different now. Still our carefree days in lilting Fontainhas
come alive again in my dreams. Elegant belles sip Eunice's creamy
orchata on the roofed gallery steps as gentle Ivo Guia-Furtado (it was
he who introduced me to Remo) still plys a haunting fiddle, the notes
dancing in the moonlight, "Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you!"

Have you made attempts to woo or beguile the members of the opposite sex

Hi Francis,

Correct (yr post on Goanet), Orgeat syrup is actually widely available
in Italy & in France too. In NL it is popular with the Surinam community
- like them you should try it mixed with milk, not water!

4) Will Jayaraj and Beniks ever get Justice? (Anish Esteves)

The custodial deaths of Jayaraj and his son Beniks have caused nationwide
outrage. It has been condemned by people of all hues. The question is
whether Jayaraj and Beniks will ever get Justice? A complacent police
system, clogged courts and politics will be obstacles in the victims' path
to justice. I think there is a need for police reforms. Also, custodial
malpractices should be dealt with very strictly.

[Goanet] Re. Carmo Mascarenhas - The Lone Viscount

2020-06-30 Thread Linken Fernandes
This music website (
https://johnkatsmc5.blogspot.com/2016/06/carm-mascarenhas-someday-soon-1975.html)
describes Carm Mascarenhas' Someday Soon album as "an ultra rare Private
Canadian Psych Cosmic Folk masterpiece".
Further, "...Dreamy cosmic feel with great lyrics and musicianship. A true
keeper!
- Folk and folkrock with acoustic and electric backing and powerful
vocals.. ...~
Rare Canadian-only private press folk-psych w/heavy vibes and terrific
musicianship/performance. Reminiscent of Van Morrison’s more cosmic work in
places or even a hippie Ron Baumber. Underated and highly recommended……"

There's more in the same vein, of course. It appears that Carm may have
found the musical niche, folk rock, he was happiest in. I listened to In
The Sun, again, at this website (
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3h1dau?playlist=x47gor) where the sound
reproduction is rather quite good and Carm's vocals may be more clearly and
distinctly heard. The claim about the whole album having "a dreamy cosmic
feel" also seems to be borne out, somewhat, in this track. There's a
photograph of the lyrics, from the "mini LP CD"'s inlay card presumably,
but the print is too tiny to decipher and reproduce here. But some friends
are in touch with people in Winnipeg who knew Carm and this deficiency
should be remedied soon, hopefully. Till then, do check out the site and
let's hear what you feel about the music.

ORCHATA AND OTHER HEALTHY DRINKS
This almond drink was my favourite, widely available during the portuguese
days. It is still made in some homes and I drink the diluted drink
offered(almonds are expensive) and think of the real mcoy I had the good
fortune to enjoy when we used to come yearly to Goa on holiday. Even the
grandmother's cooking on slow fire (leaves/wood) and ingredients
uncontaminated and high quality, the taste of which no one can provide
today! I congratulate Eunice for her effort and I hope all those healthy
drinks will be available in popular stores and malls. Those who cannot avail
at today's prices (which Govt/some sponsor may help lower), may save and
savour them at least sometimes!.

GOACAN to mobilise consumers to prepare for the
forthcoming Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly

On the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism
30th June, GOACAN has launched a drive to mobilise consumers
to prepare for the forthcoming Twelfth Session, 2020 of the
Seventh Legislative Assembly and take up their consumer
related issues with their respective MLA's in the context of
the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of its 'Making Democracy Work' campaign, GOACAN
will undertake a month long drive to make consumers aware
of the functioning of the Goa Legislative Assembly and the
opportunities provided to its members to deliberate on issues
faced by the people, ask Starred and Unstarred Questions
(LAQs), pass resolutions, move amendments, introduce
legislation and decide on policies.

The focus of the GOACAN drive is to get consumers to
familiarise themselves with the functioning of the Legislative
Assembly prior to the start of the session on 27th July, the
proceedings of the session and the final outcomes by getting
them to keep track of the bulletins issued by the Secretary
Legislature from the Assembly Complex at Porvorim.
https://www.goavidhansabha.gov.in/uploads/bulletin_part2/65_bulletin_SUMM12THSESS2020.pdf

The International Day of Parliamentarism observed by the
United Nations is an opportunity for consumers in Goa to
remind themselves of the importance of democracy, the role
of the Legislative Assembly of Goa and Parliament of India.

"Strong parliaments are a cornerstone of democracy. They
represent the voice of the people, pass laws, allocate funds
to implement laws and policies, and hold Governments to
account. They work to make sure that policies benefit all
people, especially the most vulnerable.

In COVID-19 times, Parliaments and other government
institutions are subject to the same social distancing
measures as other public and private organisations.
Yet, in a time of crisis, the role of Parliament is more vital
than ever to pass emergency laws, allocate resources and
scrutinize government action."
