[Goanet] Pope thanks journalists for helping expose Church sex scandals

REUTERS/Yara Nardi VATICAN CITY, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Saturday thanked journalists for helping uncover the clerical sexual abuse scandals that the Roman Catholic Church initially tried to cover up. The pope praised what he called the "mission" of journalism and said it was vital for reporters to get out of their newsrooms and discover what was happening in the outside world to counter misinformation often found online. "(I) thank you for what you tell us about what is wrong in the Church, for helping us not to sweep it under the carpet, and for the voice you have given to the abuse victims," the pope said. Francis was speaking at a ceremony to honour two veteran correspondents -- Philip Pullella of Reuters and Valentina Alazraki of Mexico's Noticieros Televisa -- for their long careers spent covering the Vatican. The sexual abuse scandals hit the headlines in 2002, when U.S. daily The Boston Globe wrote a series of articles exposing a pattern of abuse of minors by clerics and a widespread culture of concealment within the Church. Since then, scandals have rocked the Church in myriad countries, most recently France where a major investigation found in October that French clerics had sexually abused more than 200,000 children over the past 70 years. Critics accused Francis of responding too slowly to the scandals after he became Pontiff in 2013 and of believing the word of his fellow clergy over that of the abuse victims. But in 2018 he tried to address past mistakes, publicly admitting he was wrong about a case in Chile and vowing that the Church would never again seek to cover up such wrongdoing. In 2019 he called for an "all-out battle" against a crime that should be "erased from the face of the earth". Francis on Saturday said journalists had a mission "to explain the world, to make it less obscure, to make those who live in it less fear it". To do that, he said reporters needed to "escape the tyranny" of always being online. "Not everything can be told through email, the phone, or a screen," he said. --end-- Reporting by Crispian Balmer Editing by Frances Kerry -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada

To: goanet https://www.reuters.com/world/india/modi-invites-pope-francis-visit-india-2021-10-30/ VATICAN CITY, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Pope Francis has accepted an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit, in a turnaround in relations with the Vatican following the failure of negotiations for a papal trip to the predominantly Hindu nation in 2017. There are about 20 million Roman Catholics in India, about 1.5% of the population of 1.3 billion. Some 80% of India's people are Hindu. In 2016, Francis said he was "almost sure" of visiting India the following year along with Bangladesh. But Indian Catholic Church leaders failed to convince Modi, who heads a nationalist administration, to invite him. The last pope to visit India was John Paul II, who went to New Delhi in 1999 to issue a papal document on the Church in Asia. "Had a very warm meeting with Pope Francis. I had the opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues with him and also invited him to visit India," Modi said on Twitter on Saturday. The Indian Foreign Ministry said the invitation was for the pope "to visit India at an early date, which was accepted with pleasure". A Vatican statement gave no details of the meeting between Francis and Modi, the first between a pope and an Indian prime minister in more than two decades. Modi is in Rome to attend the G20 summit of the world's richest countries. At the time the 2017 visit fell through, Church officials said the Indian government had cited scheduling problems for the prime minister. Francis visited Myanmar and Bangladesh instead. The last Indian prime minister to meet a pope was Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who met John Paul II at the Vatican in 2000. The findings give insight into how underlying conditions contribute to hospitalizations during the pandemic. . Photo: Healthcare worker wheeling hospital bed with senior COVID-19 patient on ventilator Underlying medical conditions account for many COVID-19 hospitalizations. xavierarnau / E+ via Getty Image. .. Studies show that certain common medical conditions put people at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. These include metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as heart conditions like high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. People with these four conditions are more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19. To better understand how these conditions affect hospitalizations, a research team led by Meghan O’Hearn and Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian of Tufts University developed a statistical model. They incorporated data on the association of these four underlying conditions with COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. They also included national data on COVID-19 hospitalizations and prevalence of the conditions by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Based on this data, the model calculated the percentage of COVID-19 hospitalizations that could have been prevented without these four underlying conditions. Results were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association on February 25, 2021. The researchers estimated that more than 900,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations occurred through November 2020. Based on their model, 30% of these hospitalizations were attributable to obesity, 26% to hypertension, 21% to diabetes, and 12% to heart failure. These people would still have been infected with COVID-19, but likely would not have been sick enough to need hospitalization. More than one of these conditions are often present in the same person. The model also estimated hospitalizations due to different combinations. The numbers weren’t simply additive. In total, 64% of the hospitalizations might have been prevented if not for the four conditions. The model suggested that COVID-19 hospitalizations due to these conditions varied by age. Older adults with diabetes, heart failure, or hypertension were more likely to be hospitalized than younger people with the same condition. However, obesity affected COVID-19 hospitalization risk similarly across age groups. Race/ethnicity also resulted in disparities in COVID-19 hospitalizations due to these conditions. Black adults had the highest proportion of hospitalizations attributable to all four conditions at any age. Other studies show that COVID-19 deaths have disproportionately affected Black and other minority communities. This research further highlights the burden of heart and metabolic diseases in the U.S. Almost 3 in 4 U.S. adults is overweight or obese. Nearly half of people have prediabetes or diabetes. All of the conditions examined in the study have been shown to impair the body’s immune response. This may be one reason COVID-19 causes more harm in people with these underlying conditions. Improving heart and metabolic health may help reduce hospitalizations from COVID-19. “Medical providers should educate patients who may be at risk for severe COVID-19 and consider promoting preventive lifestyle measures, such as improved dietary quality and physical activity, to improve overall cardiometabolic health,” says O’Hearn. —by Erin Bryant -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada

(Giuseppe Lami/AFP/Getty Images) . Pope Francis has agreed to visit Canada to help ongoing efforts at reconciliation with Indigenous people following the discovery this summer of hundreds of potential burial sites at former church-run residential schools, the Vatican said on Wednesday. In a brief statement, the Vatican said the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has invited the Pope to make an apostolic journey to Canada "also in the context of the long-standing pastoral process of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples." The Vatican says Francis has indicated his "willingness" to visit Canada at a date to be determined. Given the time usually required to organize an overseas papal visit, it appeared unlikely such a pilgrimage could happen this year. "The Bishops of Canada have been engaged in meaningful discussions with Indigenous Peoples, especially those affected by Residential Schools who have shared stories about the suffering and challenges that they continue to experience," said Rev. Raymond Poisson, CCCB president. "We pray that Pope Francis' visit to Canada will be a significant milestone in the journey toward reconciliation and healing." Assembly of First Nations National Chief RoseAnne Archibald said in a media statement that she will welcome Pope Francis and expects him to deliver a "long overdue" apology to residential school survivors. "The Catholic Church must be accountable and acknowledge their responsibility for implementing and running these institutions of assimilation and genocide," she said. She also called on the church to make "a number of reparations," including returning diocese land and investing in long-term healing and support programs. Minister wants 'full recognition' from Pope of harm caused Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller told reporters in Ottawa that the Pope's upcoming visit has been demanded for a long time. "I think that for the Holy Father — in whom many of the faithful saw a lot of hope when he was installed — full and complete recognition of the harm caused to Indigenous peoples was at the top of the list of what they wanted to see him do in Canada, on the territory," he said. "I know there are mixed views, mixed perspectives on that, but in the grand scheme of what we call reconciliation, I think for Indigenous peoples, that full recognition of harm caused is something that is long waited for from the Holy Father himself." NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also said he expects the Pope to apologize for the wrongs committed by the Catholic Church against Indigenous people, particularly in residential schools. "But an apology is not good enough," Singh said. The church must provide compensation for survivors and release residential school records to "give closure to families so that they can know what happened to their children." >From the 19th century until the last school closed in 1997, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend state-funded Christian boarding schools in a campaign to assimilate them into Canadian society. Thousands of children died there of disease and other causes; others never returned to their families. Nearly three-quarters of the 130 residential schools were run by Roman Catholic missionary congregations, with others operated by the Presbyterian, Anglican and the United Church of Canada. A few months ago, Francis agreed to meet in December with Indigenous survivors of Canada's notorious residential schools amid calls for a papal apology for the Catholic Church's role. At that time, the bishops conference said the pontiff had invited the delegations to the Vatican and would meet separately with three groups — First Nations, Métis and Inuit — during their Dec. 17-20 visit. The Pope will then preside over a final audience with all three groups Dec. 20, according to the bishops group. Skepticism over Catholic compensation for residential schools As Canadian Catholic bishops say they will give $30 million to support survivors of residential schools, CBC’s Jason Warick explains why some are skeptical about the pledge. 24:34 Trudeau disappointed with slow response Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in response to a question last week while visiting Tk'emlúps te Secwe̓pemc Nation in B.C., pointed out that those three churches had signed on to the landmark 2005 Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement. Heartfelt speeches by local City, Provincial and Federal Politicians of the area.. Our politicians tend not to read lengthy prepared speeches. Quite a surprise, many noted they have visited Goa and all have attended the Viva Goa Festival. Former Mississauga Mayor, Hazel McCallion is 100 and 1/2 years old and still attends and speaks at community events. A remarkable feat. She was instrumental in supporting the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto establish St Francis Xavier's Parish. A Community Open House takes place in the afternoon and all day Sunday. The tours are time restricted, masks are mandatory, and 2nd dose vaccination documentation is checked at the door... One benefit from the almost two years of turmoil is that Goans here have turned to become involved in broader development projects beyond the scope of regular social activities. The acquisition of the space is an example. Locations are available now due to the economic slowdown and it still took extraordinary effort to find and close a good deal and then renovate an interior. Many individuals, businesses and small entrepreneurs from the community were called upon and responded by donating time, effort, expertise, and equipment. It should be noted this property is on the City of Brampton side of the municipal border. It is very close to the City of Mississauga. It's quite accessible to the entire Greater Toronto Area and Greater Golden Horseshoe Cities via car. This now means, however, new relationships will need to be developed by the GOA if future government grant applications and permit approvals are to be successful. Mayor Patrick Brown hinted to this in his comment, '...your summer Festival in Mississauga is renowned...I hope we can have a version of this one day in Brampton.' This is not an insurmountable issue of course, there are many, Goan Canadians who live in Brampton. As many infact as live in the City of Mississauga. New relationships can easily be developed and strengthened. Indeed they will have to be, as all the City of Brampton zoning, bylaws and development plans apply to this location and it is a Provincial and Federal Riding where Goans don't currently have established and strong connections. [Goanet] Pope launches consultation on reform
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-58862935 Pope Francis launches consultation on Church reform Pope Francis has launched what some describe as the most ambitious attempt at Catholic reform for 60 years. A two-year process to consult every Catholic parish around the world on the future direction of the Church began at the Vatican this weekend. Some Catholics hope it will lead to change on issues such as women's ordination, married priests and same-sex relationships. Others fear it will undermine the principles of the Church. They say a focus on reform could also distract from issues facing the Church, such as corruption and dwindling attendance levels. Pope Francis urged Catholics not to "remain barricaded in our certainties" but to "listen to one another" as he launched the process at Mass in St Peter's Basilica. "Are we prepared for the adventure of this journey? Or are we fearful of the unknown, preferring to take refuge in the usual excuses: 'It's useless' or 'We've always done it this way'?" he asked. The consultation process, called "For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission", will work in three stages: In the "listening phase", people in parishes and dioceses will be able to discuss a wide range of issues. Pope Francis said it was important to hear from those who were often on the fringes of local Church life such as women, pastoral workers and members of consultative bodies The "continental phase" will see bishops gather to discuss and formalise their findings. The "universal phase" will see a month-long gathering of the bishops a the Vatican in October 2023 The Pope is expected then to write an apostolic exhortation, giving his views and decisions on the issues discussed. Discussing his hopes for the Synod, Pope Francis warned against the process becoming an intellectual exercise that failed to address the real-world issues faced by Catholics and the "temptation to complacency" when it comes to considering change. The initiative has been praised by the progressive US-based National Catholic Reporter newspaper, which said that while the process might not be perfect "the Church is more likely to address the needs of the people of God with it than without it". However, theologian George Weigel wrote, in the conservative US Catholic journal First Things, it was unclear how "two years of self-referential Catholic chatter" would address other problems the Church such as those who are "drifting away from the faith in droves". Much of the reporting of this two-year consultation has focused on some of the issues that often appear to dominate reporting on the Catholic Church: the role of women for example, and whether they will ever be ordained as priests (the Pope says "no"). While those topics are often of concern to some Catholics, other areas which traditionally dominate Catholic social teaching, such as alleviating poverty, and increasingly, climate change, will likely play a greater part, as will how the Church is run. In reality, any issue can be raised. Don't expect any sudden changes to Church rules though. It's true that some Catholics do want to see a different kind of institution, but for Pope Francis, allowing ordinary worshippers to have their concerns (eventually) raised at the Vatican - even if their bishops disagree with them - is a huge step change for this 2000 year-old religion. -- end -- -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada

Proposition: Would anyone agree with me that Goans resident in Goa should also be given a chance to vote in the Canadian elections? I would say, yes. A resounding yes. I and most Canadians would likely agree that their votes should not be counted in the totals, but as an Opinion Poll, yes the more the merrier. And yes a strong opinion would be considered and sway public policy. Canadians differ from Americans a lot when it comes to Development and Defence Policy. Canada did not join its neighbour Iraq or Vietnam and are do not play a direct part on the war on drugs in Mexico Central America There are large communities here of Vietnamese, Iraques, Central Amercans and now Afghans, Hong Kong Chinese and Tiawaneese...Yes their votes and involvement on non-profit organizations, think tanks, and the political process affects policy and action. Yes Goans, in Goa please do follow our politics, talk to, and influence Canadian Goans on what kind of Canada you want to see. Ask them to support India and Goa. Canada is an incredibly small country in terms of population. Canada is incredibly diverse in its heritage roots. And the country is surprisingly tight knit in spite of all differences. Many of the differences are played up in the media and yes you will see protests right by each other separated by only a temporary fence and a few police officers. The amount is debate is huge and most of it is good substance and depth. Compare average Canadian political coverage with their counterparts around the world: https://www.tvo.org/theagenda https://www.cpac.ca https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-13-cross-country-checkup https://gem.cbc.ca/media/rosemary-barton-live/s01 https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/powerandpolitics Canadians are liberal in spirit and conservictive by nature. Yes and most immigrants too. This country is generally far more news media savvy than our counterparts to the south...we are far more similar to England and France in this aspect. Walk across the city of Toronto and you will see 100's of coffee shops watching 100's of news shows from around the world. If you follow US political discussion threads on public boards like Reddit etc, you will notice Canadian high rate of contribution. Far higher than in the US, Canadian election debates are followed and are not the made-for-television high drama events they are in the US. Their high-stakes drama intrigues us. Canada is a small country of just 33 million. Many many people are involved in the election process, either as volunteers with political riding associations or with the candidates.. There are many opportunities due to the sheer size of the Riding And also opportunities with Elections Canada, the independent organization that runs the Federal Elections, regulations, voter registration, polls, audits. The entire process and all the opportunities are duplicated at the Provincial and Municipal level. And again in every School Board and Membership based Non-Profit Organization. Directors are elected. Yes almost 100% Canadians at some part of their lives volunteer to help with elections. I've met many that have made this as a lifelong activity. Canadian Goans are involved in the political process and do help a lot with the election process. Many have been elected to positions on Boards. I encourage more Goans to get involved in Politics and the Political Process. This is how the country sets objectives and allocates resources.. Start by becoming directly involved in the Election Process. It's a non-partisan activity and a good way to learn. Volunteer at the Polls. Volunteer to help a Candidate with administrative work. Hit the street, go door to door with the Candidate. Run or organize a Policy Debate. Next support a specific political party, become part of the policy process and help with the research to develop policy. Finally, run. Get in front of a Riding Association seeking a nomination. The journey starts here. Goans do have greater influence than their numbers may indicate. What Goans, in general, fail to realize is that influence only translates into power if it's consolidated and is forward looking. --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada --- Frederick Noronha fredericknoronha2 at gmail.com wrote --- Sun Sep 19 12:03:11 PDT 2021 [Goanet] Canadian elections Would anyone agree with me that Goans resident in Goa should also be given a chance to vote in the Canadian elections? [Goanet] Goan nurtured Music Art form continues to captivate the world
Goan nurtured Electronic Music Art form and performance continues to captivate the world https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZd3IMBfMB0 ...much of this lovely craziness started on North Goa beaches like Anjuna and places like the Night Market. This is certainly where the music began to be amplified using converted PA (public address) systems and incorporated with then emerging technology like cassette tapes and inline soundwave distortion circuits. Some people note the rhythms have connections to Tribal Beats in India and tantric ideas and practices, which are based on Indian Buddhist Tantras. The music they suggest is connected to Sādhanā practices of meditation and the chanting of mantra. The sound is inspirational and encourages physical activity and participation The music does not seem to be at all connected to the Western European classical forms, but it did take root and profilare largely in the Dance Halls and Night Clubs of Northern Europe and the United Kingdom. The music returned to the shores of Goa where it became the core program of Electron Music Festivals and Dance Raves. These larger scale activities became a path of development for the Tourism Scene in North Goa and participating visitors have contributed 10's of millions of dollars to the local economy by purchasing food, drink and accommodation during their short term stays. The growing size of events further kicked off additional formal tourism related business including hotels, restaurants, and ground transportation. Many Western Brands have now made Goa a showcase for their products and services as they actively target the Indian Youth, Young Couples and Social Infuencers who visit Goa as a rite of passage (eg Marks & Spencers, Decathlon Sports, United Colours of Benetton, etc). The Print ‘Sajag’, an indigenous ship, joins Indian Coast Guard fleet at Porbandar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_gqUH7ftp8 - India Today National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Saturday commissioned the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Sajag, which has been constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited. https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/nsa-ajit-doval-indian-coast-guard-offshore-ship-sajag-1808531-2021-05-30 Sajag is the third in a series of five offshore patrol vessels indigenously designed in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Make in India' vision. In a tweet, the ICG said that the indigenously-built ship is fitted with advanced technology equipment, weapon and sensors capable to carry a twin engine helicopter and four high speed boats. In his address, Doval said that the concept of forming ICG came into being post 1971 war, when it was assessed that maritime borders are equally vital as land borders, according to an official statement. He commended the Goa shipyard for indigenously developing ships for the maritime armed forces on time with state-of-the-art machinery and latest technology sensors and equipment that will enable ICG to undertake varied charter of duties within and beyond Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Doval lauded the Coast Guard for the support to coastal populace, as also to undertake diverse roles like rescue operations during cyclones, marine pollution response and anti-narco operations, the statement said. "He said that the ICG has contributed significantly towards saving precious lives at sea in the recent disaster in Mumbai High," it added. In another tweet, the ICG said that Sajag will strengthen its concurrent multiple operations' capability towards ensuring safe, secure and clean seas as also responding promptly to maritime emergencies in neighbourhood. Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar, Indian Coast Guard Director General K Natarajan and CMD Goa shipyard Cmde BB Nagpal (Retd) were among those who attended the event. "ICG ships are being built within the country in various shipyards, including private yard in line with Government of India’s vision of ‘Make in India’. The NSA was impressed to witness the ICG OPV Sajag, which was looking magnificent during the commissioning ceremony," the statement said. advertisement The ICG, which was created through an Act of Parliament in 1978, has traversed a long journey in the last four decades. It is a multifarious force, undertaking concurrent operations and being the first responder for any developing situation at sea. -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada

[Goanet] Article: The age of misinformation amplified by partisan actors: ‘Belonging is stronger than facts’
https://www.chicagotribune.com/nation-world/ct-aud-nw-nyt-age-of-misinformation-20210507-s73io5bjovhkrh6nz2fhwdj6xq-story.html The age of misinformation amplified by partisan actors: ‘Belonging is stronger than facts’ By Max Fisher. The New York Times | May 07, 2021 at 1:20 PM There’s a decent chance you’ve had at least one of these rumors, all false, relayed to you as fact recently: that President Joe Biden plans to force Americans to eat less meat; that Virginia is eliminating advanced math in schools to advance racial equality; and that border officials are mass-purchasing copies of Vice President Kamala Harris’ book to hand out to refugee children. All were amplified by partisan actors. But you’re just as likely, if not more so, to have heard it relayed from someone you know. And you may have noticed that these cycles of falsehood-fueled outrage keep recurring. We are in an era of endemic misinformation — and outright disinformation. Plenty of bad actors are helping the trend along. But the real drivers, some experts believe, are social and psychological forces that make people prone to sharing and believing misinformation in the first place. And those forces are only on the rise. “Why are misperceptions about contentious issues in politics and science seemingly so persistent and difficult to correct?” Brendan Nyhan, a Dartmouth College political scientist, posed in a new paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It’s not for want of good information, which is ubiquitous. Exposure to good information does not reliably instill accurate beliefs anyway. Rather, Nyhan writes, a growing body of evidence suggests that the ultimate culprits are “cognitive and memory limitations, directional motivations to defend or support some group identity or existing belief, and messages from other people and political elites.” Put more simply, people become more prone to misinformation when three things happen. First, and perhaps most important, is when conditions in society make people feel a greater need for what social scientists call ingrouping — a belief that their social identity is a source of strength and superiority, and that other groups can be blamed for their problems. As much as we like to think of ourselves as rational beings who put truth-seeking above all else, we are social animals wired for survival. In times of perceived conflict or social change, we seek security in groups. And that makes us eager to consume information, true or not, that lets us see the world as a conflict putting our righteous ingroup against a nefarious outgroup. This need can emerge especially out of a sense of social destabilization. As a result, misinformation is often prevalent among communities that feel destabilized by unwanted change or, in the case of some minorities, powerless in the face of dominant forces. Framing everything as a grand conflict against scheming enemies can feel enormously reassuring. And that’s why perhaps the greatest culprit of our era of misinformation may be, more than any one particular misinformer, the era-defining rise in social polarization. “At the mass level, greater partisan divisions in social identity are generating intense hostility toward opposition partisans,” which has “seemingly increased the political system’s vulnerability to partisan misinformation,” Nyhan wrote in an earlier paper. Growing hostility between the two halves of America feeds social distrust, which makes people more prone to rumor and falsehood. It also makes people cling much more tightly to their partisan identities. And once our brains switch into “identity-based conflict” mode, we become desperately hungry for information that will affirm that sense of us versus them, and much less concerned about things like truth or accuracy. In an email, Nyhan said it can be methodologically difficult to nail down the precise relationship between overall polarization in society and overall misinformation, but there is abundant evidence that an individual with more polarized views becomes more prone to believing falsehoods. The second driver of the misinformation era is the emergence of high-profile political figures who encourage their followers to go ahead and indulge their desire for identity-affirming misinformation. After all, an atmosphere of all-out political conflict often benefits those leaders, at least in the short term, by rallying people behind them. And then there is the third factor — a shift to social media, which is a powerful outlet for composers of disinformation, a pervasive vector for misinformation itself and a multiplier of the other risk factors. “Media has changed, the environment has changed, and that has a potentially big impact on our natural behavior,” said William Brady, a Yale University social psychologist. “When you post things, you’re highly aware of the feedback that you get, the social feedback in terms of likes and shares,” Brady said. So when misinformation

[Goanet] Canada to ban flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days (re COVID19)
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/flight-ban-india-1.5997880 Canada to ban flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days India reported a surge of more than 314,000 new infections today David Cochrane, Ryan Patrick Jones CBC News · Last Updated: April 22 Photo caption: In April alone, 17 flights from Delhi to Vancouver have had a COVID-19-positive person aboard. In the same period, seven other flights from Amsterdam, Tokyo, Mexico City, and the U.S. have reported exposures. - The federal government will ban passenger flights from India and Pakistan for 30 days in response to rising COVID case counts in India and mutations of the coronavirus. At a press conference in Ottawa this evening, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said the ban on direct flights from those countries will take effect tonight at 11:30 p.m. Alghabra said air passengers who depart from India or Pakistan but arrive in Canada via a third country will need to have a negative result on a COVID-19 test taken at their last point of departure before being allowed to enter Canada. "As we've seen with our third wave, the COVID-19 pandemic can change rapidly," said Alghabra. "New variants can spread even faster than before and our health system is feeling even more pressure than ever before." Passengers arriving in Canada from abroad are required already to undergo pre-boarding tests for COVID-19, tests on arrival and a government-mandated 14-day quarantine period. Health Minister Patty Hajdu said that while only 1.8 per cent of all air travellers entering Canada are found to be COVID-19-positive, an increasing number of travellers arriving from India and Pakistan have been testing positive in recent days. Hajdu said federal data show people from India made up 50 per cent of all positive tests conducted at the border, despite the fact that Indian travellers account for only 20 per cent of travel to this country. Hajdu said the number is similar for travellers from Pakistan. The new travel restrictions come after opposition leaders and premiers pressed the federal government to suspend flights from hot spot countries as a massive surge of COVID-19 cases ravages India. In a joint letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released today, Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Quebec Premier François Legault urged the federal government to reduce the number of incoming international flights and secure the Canada-U.S. land border. "There is an urgent need to address issues with testing and quarantining at the borders, including falsified COVID-19 testing documentation, travellers opting [for] fines over complying [with] quarantine requirements, or travelling via private vehicle/plane to avoid quarantine, among several other areas of concern," they wrote. "While it is crucial that the transport of essential goods is not hindered by border measures, it is likewise crucial that all non-essential travel be curtailed. The introduction of stricter measures for travellers crossing at land borders is a significant step to achieve that goal and ensure that collectively we are doing all we can to protect our citizens." Earlier today, Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole called for a temporary suspension of certain flights to control the B1617 variant, first sequenced in India, and the P1 variant, first detected in Brazil. "We need to move quickly to stop the new variants from entering Canada and spreading further. We must secure our borders," he told a news conference today. "It is long past time for Justin Trudeau to take action. The federal government must temporarily suspend flights from hotspot countries immediately." O'Toole said the restrictions should come as a temporary hold, adding that the government needs to procure more vaccine doses. India, the world's second-most populous country, reported a surge of more than 314,000 new infections today, adding pressure to a health care system critically short of hospital beds and oxygen. ---end--- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada
[Goanet] Article: Shrinking tourism necessitates Goa to look for alternative economic sources
https://www.deccanherald.com/brandspot/pr-spot/shrinking-tourism-necessitates-goa-to-look-for-alternative-economic-sources-976404.html Shrinking tourism necessitates Goa to look for alternative economic sources Apr 20 2021, 09:23 istupdated: Apr 20 2021, 09:23 Vedanta, JSW and Adani Group-backed MPT Goa plays a crucial role in the import and export of coal and other minerals. Thus, strengthening ports infrastructure is important in uplifting the state’s economy. Goa’s shrinking tourism sector suffered another jolt as the state recorded almost 400 new covid-19 cases in a day on April 6. According to a KPMG report, Goa's tourism industry suffered Rs 2000 Cr to Rs 7000 Cr loss during the nationwide lockdown last year. With fears of the pandemic wave resurfacing, the state that thrives on tourism needs other industries for its economic and social upkeep. Since Goa is bordered by the Arabian Sea, strengthening ports infrastructure and sea connectivity can potentially help in uplifting the state's economy. The Adani Group's project in Goa – of loading and unloading coal that is imported through Mormugao Port Terminal, is one such promising example. Operated by the central government and backed by private companies like JSW, Vedanta and Adani Group, MPT Goa employs over 2,600 people and has more than 4000 pensioners. While only one out of the ten berths at the terminal makes up for Adani Group’s Project, the rest are operated by JSW and Vedanta. Nevertheless, such projects that are run through private-public partnership enhance the scope of the growth of any infrastructure including ports. The success story of MPT signals strong opportunities for developing ports in and around Goa which has the potential of impacting the lives of the locals directly. Secondly, Goa’s fishing industry is perhaps underleveraged. With almost 10 per cent of the population working directly or indirectly in the fish trade, the sector plays a crucial role in uplifting the state’s economy. In its bid to make the coastal state a fisheries hub, the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying recently announced an investment of over Rs 400 Cr. The plan includes the creation of about 30 fish landing jetties and fostering safe marine cultivation. However, like many other economic activities, the need to integrate sustainability is paramount to curb the environmental impact. Other sectors that the state can tap into, include R and knowledge-based industries considering the high literacy rate of Goa that stands at almost 90 per cent and the fact that most of the population comprises of young workforce. --- end -- -- --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com +1 416-660-0847 www.goaculturelist.ca Canada

I can envision these solutions becoming increasing popular in India. The air pollution at street level is incredible. Add a small water-circulation cooling unit (the kind found on high end PCs), crash protection, bluetooth connection to a smartphone, noise isolation, and every motorbike and rickshaw driver would want one. - Inventors design high-tech helmets for Covid protection - BBC News https://www.bbc.com/news/business-54916159 By Stav Dimitropoulos Published16 November image captionYezin Al-Qaysi says that members of the public often ask about his device For the past two months inventor Yezin Al-Qaysi has been riding the Toronto subway in Canada wearing a huge black "mad helmet". The hazmat (hazardous materials) helmet completely encloses his head and upper torso, and has a visor that extends all the way down to his chest. On the back is a battery-powered fan and filter respirator system that purifies air that is sucked in, and pushes "stale" air out. Looking like a dystopian figure straight out of an apocalyptic movie, the 32-year-old unsurprisingly gets some strong reactions. "Somebody screamed: 'Where did you get that!' and many people approach me out of curiosity," he says. "Others are amazed.. They certainly don't laugh, but even if they do, I cannot see their mouths because everyone is wearing masks." image captionThe BioVYZR helmet can be worn when you go shopping Mr Al-Qaysi is one of a number of designers and entrepreneurs around the world who have rushed to release hazmat, or PAPR (powered air purifying respirator), helmets this year, aimed at people looking for more protection against coronavirus than just wearing a face mask. ADVERTISEMENT His is called the BioVYZR, and the battery is said to last for up to 12 hours. The Canadian says that his business - VZYR Technologies - now has sales in the "tens of thousands" mark. US Navy veteran Chris Ehlinger, is another hazmat helmet creator. "These helmets in a sense psychologically prepare us for the future destiny of our species," says the 35-year-old. His company, Valhalla Medical Design, based in Austin, Texas, has launched a product called NE-1, which looks similar to a motorcycle helmet. In addition to a powered air filtration system, it has internal and external microphones and speakers, so that the wearer can more easily speak to people around him or her. image captionThe NE-1 has built-in speakers and microphones, so the wearer can easily talk to other people It even has Bluetooth audio built in, so you can make a phone call or listen to music. But with a coronavirus vaccine having been announced last week, are helmets like these really necessary? Michael Hall, whose firm sells a PAPR helmet called Air, believes they will be popular in the longer term with people concerned about bad air quality. New Tech Economy is a series exploring how technological innovation is set to shape the new emerging economic landscape. His company, Utah-based Hall Labs, says it has sold 3,000 so far. It is also now working on more high-tech versions, where the visor turns into a screen on which the user can watch videos. "And for airline travel we'll be able to create a segment [with helmets that work] like noise-cancelling headphones," says the 44-year-old. "We think that there's a market for that kind of serenity." Yet whether for protecting against airborne viruses or bad air quality, are such helmets a bit over-the-top? Natasha Duwin, whose Florida-based firm Octo Safety Devices makes face masks, says she can see the appeal. image captionNatasha Duwin, pictured with business partner Tobias Franoszek, says that a proper respirator mask would work as well as a helmet for most people "Helmets have the advantage that they show people's faces," she says. "You can see smiles and human expressions, and have a very strong sense of security. "Yet because each one of these helmets depends on at least two filtration systems, batteries, and [other things], all these items can break down. And if only one of them breaks down, you are in serious trouble." She also cautions that the helmets will need to be thoroughly cleaned before each use. Ms Duwin says that for most people, all they need is a fitted, respirator mask that meets the certified quality standard in that country. Respirator masks have inbuilt filters, and both fit more tightly, and work more effectively, than simple fabric face masks. The above three helmets cost in the range of $149-$379 (£113-£288), but none has yet to receive certification. However, each of the three firms say they are nearing the final stages of the process. image captionMichael Hall believes helmets such as the Air will continue to be popular even after Covid-19 Dr Suzanne Pham, medical director of the Covid-19 response team at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, says: "It remains to be seen if these fascinating helmets effectively battle Covid, as currently there is not enough research behind

She would move towards the unknown. She had so much courage." Andrew Duffy Andrew Duffy November 4, 2020 When Emma Gama-Pinto died last month in Ottawa, her passing was marked by a flurry of news coverage in the African press. The Nation newspaper called her “a betrayed widow,” a victim of Kenya’s early, nasty politics. April Zhu, a writer for The Elephant, eulogized her as whip-smart, beautiful and fearless. In its obituary, The Star Kenya recounted the details of her husband’s political assassination, the young nation’s first. Pio Gama-Pinto, a crusading member of Parliament and a father of three, was gunned down in the driveway of the family’s Nairobi home on the morning of Feb. 24, 1965. Gama-Pinto’s daughter, Linda, said her mother did not let the bitterness of that tragedy consume the rest of her life. “She only moved in one direction and that was forward,” Linda said. “She would move towards the unknown. She had so much courage. She was fearless, she truly was.” Emma Gama-Pinto died Oct. 28 from the complications of dementia. She was 92. Emma Dias was born in Jamshedpur, India, where her father, a Christian from the Portuguese colony of Goa, worked as a superintendent in the Tata Steel mill. At the age of eight, Emma and her twin sister, Joyce, were sent to a convent in Darjeeling, in northern India, where they were educated by Irish nuns. In her 20s, Emma travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, to visit her twin sister, who had married a Goan man working in that country’s civil service. It was September 1953. In Nairobi, Emma was introduced to Pio Gama-Pinto, a 26-year-old journalist of Goan descent who was working to overthrow British rule in Kenya. Rumour held that Gama-Pinto was a communist. “She was a devout Catholic and thought she would bring him back to the church,” said Linda. “That was the romantic side of her. He was very candid with her and told her he wasn’t a communist and there was no need to worry about his soul. But he didn’t hide his vocation, which was to fight for justice for the Kenyan people.” Emma Gama-Pinto with her granddaughter, Midori Emma Derome-Pinto. Photo supplied / Courtesy of Linda Gama-Pinto. Pio could not promise Emma much. He was poor, and a socialist, and she would need to work. He lived in the servants’ quarters of a friend’s home. Still, Emma did not hesitate to follow her heart. The couple married in January 1954, and after a short honeymoon, Emma completed a course in shorthand and took a job as a secretary. Pio used some of their wedding money to buy a printing press. Five months later, Pio was arrested and thrown into prison without a trial for lending support to the Mau Mau Uprising, an armed rebellion against colonial rule by landless peasants. Emma would not see him again until he was released from Kenya’s notorious Manda Island prison four years later. Pio resumed his activism as soon he was out. He met Malcolm X, organized local trade unions and wrote in support of the Kenya African National Union, the socialist party that would dominate Kenya’s political scene after the country’s independence in December 1963. Meanwhile, Emma raised their three children, Linda, Malusha and Tereshka, while continuing to work as a secretary. In July 1964, Pio became a member of the country’s Parliament, where he clashed with the country’s first president, Jomo Kenyatta, and accused him of “grabbing” English farms for himself and those allied to him. On the morning of Feb. 24, 1965, Emma was in the government office where she worked when she received a call from her mother, who was visiting from India. “Pio has been attacked,” she told Emma. “I am coming home right away,” Emma said. Emma Gama-Pinto with her daughter, Linda, and her granddaughter, Midori Emma Derome-Pinto. Photo supplied / Courtesy of Linda Gama-Pinto When Emma arrived, she could see Pio’s white Saab at the end of the driveway. She walked toward her house when her mother stopped her: “He’s still in the car. He has been killed,” she said. Emma went to the car and saw her husband’s body slumped in the front seat. A pink blanket covered him. Two gunmen had fired into the car as Pio waited for a gate to open. There were many theories about Pio’s assassination: that he had complained too loudly about corruption; that he had angered entrenched union and corporate interests. Two teenagers were arrested for his killing. One was acquitted and the other man received a presidential pardon after serving 35 years in prison. Linda is among those who believes his assassination was ordered by Kenyatta. After Pio’s murder, Emma discovered the family had no money in the bank.

[Goanet] Article: When Good People Don’t Act, Evil Reigns
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/13/opinion/activism-trump-masks-climate.html When Good People Don’t Act, Evil Reigns Stop thinking that the horrors of the world will simply work themselves out. By Charles M. Blow I have often wondered how major world tragedies and horrors were allowed to unfold. Where were all the good people, those who objected or should have? How did life simply go on with a horror in their midst? How did the trans-Atlantic slave trade play out over hundreds of years? How did slavery thrive in this country? How was the Holocaust allowed to happen? How did the genocides in Rwanda or Darfur come to be? There is, of course, nearly always an explanation. Often it is official policy; often it is driven by propaganda. But I’m more concerned with how people in the society considered these events at the time, and how any semblance of normalcy could be maintained while events unfolded. It turns out that our current era is providing the unsettling answer: It was easy. As I write this, nearly two hundred thousand Americans have died — many of them needlessly — from Covid-19, in large part because the Trump administration has refused to sufficiently address the crisis, be honest with the American people and urge caution. Instead, Trump has lied about the virus, downplayed it, resisted scientists’ warnings and continues to hold rallies with no social distancing and no mask requirements. Things are poised to get worse: Models now predict that the number of Americans killed by the virus could double between now and Jan. 1. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington: “We expect the daily death rate in the U.S., because of seasonality and declining public vigilance, to reach nearly 3,000 a day in December. Cumulative deaths expected by Jan. 1 are 415,090; this is 222,522 deaths from now until the end of the year.” ImageSupporters at President Trump’s rally in Minden, Nev., on Saturday. Supporters at President Trump’s rally in Minden, Nev., on Saturday.Credit...Doug Mills/The New York Times And yet, Americans still flock to Trump rallies, Republicans continue to defend his pandemic response and it is not clear that he will be defeated in November. We are, in many states, back to restaurants and bars, schools and churches, gyms and spas. It’s not as if we don’t know that there is a deadly virus being transmitted through the air, but it seems as though many Americans, weary of restrictions, have simply made their peace with it. We have a climate crisis that continues to worsen. Storms are getting stronger. Droughts are severe. Rivers are flooding. The sea level is rising. And yet, we don’t do nearly enough to stop it and may not do enough before it’s too late to do anything. Right now much of the West Coast is ablaze with hellish scenes of orange skies, and yet too many of us entertain climate change deniers, or, perhaps worse, know well the gravity and precariousness of the situation and still haven’t changed our habits or voted for the candidates with the boldest visions to save the planet. Right now, China has detained as many as one million mostly Muslim citizens, in indoctrination camps, hoping to remold many into what The New York Times called “loyal blue-collar workers to supply Chinese factories with cheap labor.” And yet, the world does little. Many look away. Life goes on. This is how these catastrophes happen — in full sight — and people with full knowledge don’t revolt. People sometimes think that the issue is far away, or if it’s not, that it’s too big and they are too powerless. They think provincially, or even parochially, concerned with their own house, their own street, their own community. “It’s too bad that those children are in cages, but I can’t worry about that now, the clothes in the dryer need folding.” “It’s too bad that an unarmed Black man just got shot by the police, but I can’t worry about that now, the yard needs mowing.” I guess in some ways this impulse is self-protecting, preventing the mind and spirit from becoming overwhelmed with angst and rage. But, the result is that evil — as a person or system — rampages, unchecked, taking your personal laissez-faire as public license. If you don’t complain, you condone. But this mustn’t be. Stop thinking of yourself as weak or helpless. Stop thinking that things will simply work themselves out. Stop thinking that evil will stop at the gate and not trample your own garden. Gather the energy. Gather your neighbor. Fight, vote, email, post. Do all you can to stand up for the vulnerable, for the oppressed, for the planet itself. Don’t let history record this moment as it has recorded too many others: a time when good people did too little to confront wickedness and disaster. As Edmund Burke wrote in his 1770 “Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents”: “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in

https://www.thestar.com/opinion/contributors/2020/09/13/catholics-lionizing-of-attorney-general-barr-is-a-disturbing-trend.html Catholics lionizing of Attorney General Barr is a disturbing trend By Michael Coren Sun., Sept. 13, 2020 On Sept. 23, the 16th National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, an extremely prestigious assembly of the good and the great of U.S. Catholicism, takes place. At the event the Christifideles Laici Award will be given, “In Honour and Gratitude for Fidelity to the Church, Exemplary Selfless and Steadfast Service in the Lord’s Vineyard.” The prize is named after Pope John Paul II’s exhortation, “to stir and promote a deeper awareness among all the faithful of the gift and responsibility they share in the communion and mission of the church.” There are many Catholics who have given their lives to helping the poor and marginalized, and recognition for such heroes is only correct. This year’s recipient, however, is Attorney General William Barr. Barr is someone who has championed and extended the death penalty in the U.S., supported Donald Trump in his most strident anti-refugee policies, done the president’s legal bidding in almost any way possible, and has often been accused of simple dishonesty. All of which runs directly contrary to Catholic teaching. Yet he is known as a conservative Catholic and is vehemently opposed to abortion. The argument that those on the right who oppose abortion are pro-birth rather than pro-life has long been offered but the case is actually even stronger. They are merely pro-conception. Because for a mother to remain healthy and have a successful pregnancy she requires a medical system that will support her regardless of economic status. Barr opposes socialized medicine. Indeed, the chances of a white, middle-class woman and her baby surviving pregnancy in the United States are far greater than those of a Black, poor woman — who are also much more likely to be affected by the criminalization of abortion because states promoting such policies are invariably in the South. Barr also opposes contraception, public and affordable day care, taxation policies that would aid the poor, modern sex education in schools, and almost every other policy that would reduce abortion. The reaction, the incredulity, to the Barr award has been substantial. Sister Helen Prejean, the Catholic activist and nun who was portrayed in the movie “Dead Man Walking” wrote, “I raise my voice in fervent opposition to the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast’s scandalous offer of an award to Attorney General Barr for his ‘exemplary Christlike’ behaviour. I urge the group to immediately rescind their invitation, and I urge anyone reading this to join me.” But, frankly, it will do limited good. The lionization of Barr is part of an emerging pattern, one committed to trying to seduce the Catholic vote in November’s presidential election. Shortly before the Prayer Breakfast announcement a video sermon by Catholic priest Father James Altman, pastor of St. James the Less Catholic parish in Lacrosse, Wisc., went viral — already seen by more than half-a-million people. In it he condemns Democrats as “godless” and roars that “You cannot be Catholic and be a Democrat. Period.” Altman insists that, “We can see in the many godless politicians, in the godless educational system, in the godlessness of so many ‘sheeples,’ they are most definitely not serving him, they are not fulfilling their purpose in life,” and then shows pictures of Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi, both Catholic Democrats. The language and anger is extraordinary for an ordained cleric but while many in the church have reprimanded him, others have been inspired. Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Tex., tweeted: “As the Bishop of Tyler I endorse Fr Altman’s statement in this video. My shame is that it has taken me so long. Thank you Fr Altman for your COURAGE. If you love Jesus & His Church & this nation ... please HEED THIS MESSAGE.” Expect to see more of this in the weeks to come, as the Trump team struggles to secure enough of the Catholic vote that was once solidly Democrat. They made major inroads four years ago and while they know that the vast majority of white evangelicals are still MEGA-committed, it’s Catholic voters — particularly middle-class or in swing and rust belt states — who are the one who will make a major difference. I can only imagine what the progressive Pope Francis thinks of all this. I’m sure there’s quite a word for it in colloquial Spanish! Also In Canada: -- Stores close 2-hours early so stock can be filled without customers in the store, before it happened mostly continuously through out the day -- Line-ups happen outside the store in a marked parking lot...lots of space, but a pain of it rains -- Some store are moving to no cash handling -- Some store have erected plexiglass shield for cashiers -- All the self check-outs are open, fewer cashiers -- Lots of surface cleaning going on in stores -- Some sections are closed, ie grab-and-go, nobody in offices, so no one is grabbing on the run, fresh desserts bakery, deli counter that provided sliced preserved meat and cheese, custom sandwiches, soups, closed, etc. No eating at store cafe tables...take out only -- Most people are wearing masks and gloves (most Canadians are prepared as they regularly carry thin cotton or wool winter gloves in the fall, winter, and spring ) -- Seniors, mothers, and people with disabilities are not asked to wait, but immediately asked to head to the door -- Many shops, at least last week, provided extra thin plastic gloves for people picking up produce and meat -- Lots of comfort food moving, waffles, ice-cream, frozen pizza, cookies -- Lots of ingredients are moving, flour, rice, milk. Indians are making milk sweets at home Generally grocery items are going faster than before because far more people are eating 3-4 meals at home ie no coffee shops, work lunches, fast food, or school cafeteria, etc After the first two weeks, I did not see much big shopping going on. Most people were getting the basics and a few comfort items and moving on... I would say many of the luxury items and discretionary items were being left behind. A sign that there is a drop in wages coming in... All local buses are temporary free in my area due to the emergency, so may people are walking for added exercise and if it looks empty taking the bus back. Most people have access cars, and designate one person to do the shopping. On my street I notice many seniors living independently are having friend or family drop the shopping on the porch. [Goanet] offtopic Canada - Technology allows me to work from home.
AP News Canada shuts Parliament, Trudeau in quarantine, no travel By ROB GILLIEStoday TORONTO (AP) — Canada shut down Parliament and advised against all nonessential travel outside the country Friday while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau governed remotely from his home, in self-imposed quarantine after his wife tested positive for the new coronavirus. Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer, also advised more social distancing, no handshakes and kisses, while the Canadian government advised cancelling large events like concerts and Transport Minister Marc Garneau said cruise ships with more than 500 people will not be able to dock in Canada until July 1. Overseas flights returning to Canada will also be restricted to a small number of airports. Canada’s House of Commons voted to shut down for at least five weeks to help ensure lawmakers do not contribute to the spread of the virus. The moves came a day after Trudeau’s wife tested positive. The prime minister himself has been in self-imposed quarantine. “I will remain in self isolation for 14 days. I want to be clear. I have no symptoms and I feel very well,” Trudeau said at a news conference outside his residence in Ottawa. “Technology allows me to work from home.” All parties in Parliament agreed to the suspension, which means lawmakers will miss two weeks of sessions since they had previously planned to be away next week and two weeks in April. The House is scheduled to next meet on Monday, April 20. “This just shows you how seriously our government and members of the house are taking this,” Government House leader Pablo Rodriguez said. Part of the deal for closing Parliament for five weeks was ratifying the new replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement. Rodriguez said lawmakers have passed legislation to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and the Senate was expected to follow suit later Friday. The suspension of the House of Commons means the federal budget won’t be presented March 30 as Finance Minister Bill Morneau had promised, but would come at a later date. Trudeau was quarantining himself at home because his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, tested positive for the new coronavirus after returning from Britain. He said Friday his wife has mild flu-like symptoms but is doing fine. He said neither he nor their three children are showing symptoms. Trudeau said significant stimulus will be announced soon. “I know that you are worried,” Trudeau said. “Nobody should have to worry about paying rent, buying groceries.” Trudeau was spending the day in briefings, phone calls and virtual meetings from home, including speaking with other world leaders and joining a special Cabinet committee discussion on the coronavirus. Trudeau spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday. He said his kids are also in self isolation and have been playing with LEGOs. He said his wife has been talking to family and friends on the phone. Trudeau himself had not been tested because he was not showing symptoms, his office said. The doctor’s advice to the prime minister is to continue daily activities while self-monitoring. Canada’s central bank also announced it is cutting its overnight rate target by half a percentage point to 0.75 per cent in response to the pandemic. The bank already cut by half a point on March 4 due to the virus. Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau said a $10 billion Canadian (US $7.1 billion) credit facility program will also be available to business and significant stimulus package is coming. “We are going to do whatever it takes to protect Canadians and keep our economy strong,” Morneau said. 7 hours ago AP NEWS All contents © copyright 2020 The Associated Press. https://research.unl.pt/ws/portalfiles/portal/5676621/1152_273_1064_1_PB.pdf Goans and East-Indians: A Negotiated Catholic Presence in Bombay’s Urban Space Abstract: Goan emigration to Bombay during the late 19th and early 20th centuries had a strong impact on the city, influencing its culture and society. This created an uneasy juxtaposition between the pre - exist ent Catholic community in Bombay, who came to be known as East Indians, and the newcomers. Within the framework of colonial Bombay, the Goan migrants found employment, creating mutualistic structures such as clubs, housing societies and micro credit banks, developing agency in certain sectors. Goans tended to settle in specific neighbourhoods, where their presence influenced the cityscape and urban life of Bombay. By mapping the impact of Goan emigration to Bombay, one can understand how the community adapt ed itself to a new cosmopolitan environment, creating a web of dwellings and services that allowed the Goans to adjust, settle, and feel at home. Using primary and secondary sources, we will focus on the numerous Goan clubs, housing societies and Goan - owne d economic activities that mushroomed in Bombay during the early 1900s. By addressing how the Goan community established itself in Bombay, we will argue that convergence towards the same geographical areas was a factor in the rivalry with the East Indians, as was the internecine religious strife usually described as the Padroado - Propaganda dispute. This rivalry between the two Catholic communities evinced conflicting notions of collective identity, with citizenship, race, and language playing determinant roles. [Goanet] Article: No Tata Nano production since Jan; only 1 unit sold in last 9 months
https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/no-nano-production-since-jan-only-1-unit-sold-in-last-6-months-119070201018_1.html Tata Motors has not produced its small car Nano since January this year, and not sold a single unit since February this year, according to regulatory filings by the company. The company, however, said it has not taken a formal decision on stopping production of the entry-level car, which was once dubbed as the 'people's car' saying it continues to sell the car as per demand. As per the filings by Tata Motors, the last time it produced Nano was in December 2018 when it rolled out 82 units from Sanand plant. Since then, from January to June there was no production of Nano. In terms of sales it was only in February, during January-June period, this year that Tata Motors sold one unit of the small car. When asked if the company has finally decided to discontinue Nano, a Tata Motors spokesperson said no such decision has been taken yet. "We are selling as per demand," the spokesperson said. There were no exports of Nano in January-June period too. In the past, Tata Motors has hinted that Nano production would be stopped from April 2020 as it has no plans to invest further on Ratan Tata's dream car to meet strict emission norm under BS-VI and upcoming new safety regulations. In June last year, the company produced just one unit of the Nano and sold three units in domestic market. After that, the company continued to produce Nano at Sanand plant based on market demand and has insisted that it hasn't taken a decision on the future of Nano. Nano, which was unveiled in January 2008 at the Auto Expo with much expectations of being the people's car, could not live up to the billing. The car was launched in the market in March 2009 with an initial price of close to Rs 1 lakh for the basic model despite cost escalations, with Ratan Tata insisting that "a promise is a promise". --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com 416.660.0847 www.goaculturelist.ca

[Goanet] The Great Indian Stretchable Time
>>In Canada everything runs on time<< Even Goans? Yes its true. Even Goans run on time in Canada. I've been a visitor at many Goan Seniors events, and 70 - 80-years-old plus are consistently punctual to the minute when ending events. If community rooms are booked back-to-back delays will trigger a process that will lead to a reallocation of the space. I've seen many seniors start their home kitchen stove consistently on the dot of 7:00 pm to take advantage of the variable electricity price drop. All the prep is done neatly before... Goans, and Indians, can be punctual if this is the norm. Of course, then they will then scream too, if the coffee is 1-minute late at the coffee shop, the grocery queue has more that 4-5 people in line, or a doctors appointment is pushed 15-20 mins back... With the new smart phones giving instant traffic data via Google Maps, Canadian offices expect everyone to start on time in every weather. Emergencies excepted. If you are late, they have no qualms about forwarding a Client Call to your cell phone. You will notice if Google search a store in Canada, the site will give you opening and closing and also updated average queue wait times... Transit has up to the minute times as all public vehicles have transponders. You can use an app on your phone to see the bus on a map, or places like the city of Mississauga, call the phone number on the transit stop. All the stops have individual phone numbers ... it's automated and immediately updated for delays. This will happen in India. Sooner than later. The Airlines run on time, other modes of transport will soon too. Keep in mind maintenance procedures, planning, and management investment have lots to do with punctuality...it does cost more for good service... --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com 416.660.0847 www.goaculturelist.ca [Goanet] The Great Indian Stretchable Time -- Roland Francis roland.francis at gmail.com wrote Thu Apr 11 07:22:21 PDT 2019 Simple solution. In Canada everything runs on time, even when very cold weather intervenes. When the transportation does not run on schedule, half the fare is refunded after a certain time, the full fare beyond a further time. When revenue thus reduces, heads roll. When heads roll, everybody strives to do their job efficiently and carefully and without the sloppiness that causes delays. Don’t see why India can’t copy that. Roland. [Goanet] offtopic: Estonia's e-residency
https://www.nytimes.com/paidpost/estonia/how-estonia-is-using-e-residency-to-support-entrepreneurs.html In 2014, Estonians asked: If their country could serve citizens and residents entirely online, why not open up their digital borders to more people? This new population wouldn’t need citizenship or physical residency, but would still be issued an Estonian digital ID card, enabling them to operate within Estonia’s digital business environment without physically being in the country. This would allow more people to establish and manage an E.U. company entirely online, helping democratize entrepreneurship globally. E-Residency Explained: What,Why and How? Anyone can apply for e-Residency online, regardless of citizenship or location. Applicants undergo background checks by the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board and, if approved, are invited to pick up an e-Residency starter kit containing a digital ID card and PIN codes used for online authentication and digital signatures. The benefits? Many expats and digital nomads like e-Residency because they can run their businesses entirely online in English, from anywhere they are. Others appreciate being able to run an E.U. company with lower costs and less hassle. This includes a significant number of entrepreneurs already living in E.U. countries where business costs and barriers can be much higher. Finally, many use e-Residency because it’s trusted and can make doing business globally easier. Thanks to Estonia’s digitized business environment, anyone can look up who owns a company established by an e-resident and how it has paid taxes, a transparency valued by location-independent entrepreneurs. They can access the E.U. market, connect with like-minded entrepreneurs and use e-services unavailable to companies registered locally, such as payment providers. --- Albert Peres Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com 416.660.0847 www.goaculturelist.ca

[Goanet] OffTopic: From Canada. Engineer to become Governor General
OTTAWA— Julie Payette (age 53), Canada’s second woman in space, will be Canada’s next governor general, the CBC has reported. An engineer born in Montreal, Payette was selected as a Canadian astronaut in June 1992, going on to make two space shuttle flights and becoming the first Canadian on the International Space Station. Sources say Trudeau informed the Queen during an audience with her last week of his recommendation to the post. Current Gov. Gen. David Johnston’s term is set to expire in September, after Stephen Harper extended it by two years ahead of the 2015 federal election. The identity of his replacement has been a closely guarded secret. Payette would become the 29th person to hold the position. An engineer born in Montreal, Payette was selected as a Canadian astronaut in June 1992, going on to make two space shuttle flights and becoming the first Canadian on the International Space Station. Payette hung up her flight suit in 2013 to become chief operating officer of the Montreal Science Centre as well as vice-president of the Canada Lands Company. Traditionally, the viceregal job rotates between anglophones and francophones, with all indications pointing to a francophone filling the portfolio beginning this fall. Johnston, who had a long career in academia, was chosen for the position off a short list presented to Harper by an ad hoc committee of experts struck with the express task of selecting a non-partisan person with constitutional knowledge. At the time, Harper had a minority government and so who held the post of governor general was essential to maintaining the stability of government. The names of those on the selection committee weren’t published until after Johnston’s nomination, but Harper would go on to make the committee a permanent body, saying a process to ensure a non-partisan approach to appointments was important. When asked late last year how he’d pick the next governor general, Trudeau was noncommittal about what process he would use. “I’m not going to change things just to reinvent the wheel,” Trudeau said in a year-end interview with The Canadian Press. “If there is a good process that we can improve by making (it) more open and transparent and more diverse, that I will probably do.” Johnston is currently on a visit to China, and is expected to have an audience with the Queen next week when he travels to the U.K. for Canada 150 events, likely marking the last time he will sit face-to-face with the monarch he represents. In his farewell speech on Canada Day, Johnston said he has learned much in his seven years on the job. “These are challenging but exciting times,” he said. “And together we can show the world what a great country looks like. To me it looks like Canada, a country that strives, always, to be smarter and more caring — to do better, together.” With files from The Canadian Press ---end-- --- Albert Peres Project Manager, Goa Culture List goaculturel...@gmail.com 416.660.0847 www.goaculturelist.ca

This film gives insight into the success of small scale Indian community and business development in the Diaspora. Gerrard Street Village (Little India, or Gerrard India Bazaar) is the grand old lady of the Indian retail storefronts and restaurants in Canada. There are now numerous South Asia areas in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) among the 100's of other multi-ethnic neighbourhoods. These neighbourhoods are not ghettos but remarkably well organized, internationally integrated, vibrant areas. They are places where people dream hard and work hard. I'm sure this is similar to every city in the Western World. (like taking away their healthcare) 2) Why do Republicans hate the Affordable Care Act, and why are they so transparently acting to give wealthy people a tax break by making healthcare unaffordable? Here is the short answer: *All politics is moral*. George Lakoff has retired as Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley. [Goanet] Pope shakes up Vatican by replacing conservative doctrinal chief - REUTERS
Pope shakes up Vatican by replacing conservative doctrinal chief http://www.reuters.com/article/us-pope-mueller-idUSKBN19M3GH?il=0 By Philip Pullella | VATICAN CITY In a major shake up of the Vatican's administration on Saturday, Pope Francis replaced Catholicism's top theologian, a conservative German cardinal who has been at odds with the pontiff's vision of a more inclusive Church. A brief Vatican statement said Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Mueller's five-year mandate as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a key department charged with defending Catholic doctrine, would not be renewed. Mueller, 69, who was appointed by former Pope Benedict in 2012, will be succeeded by the department's number two, Archbishop Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer. Ladaria, a 73-year-old Spaniard who, like the Argentine pope is a member of the Jesuit order, is said by those who know him to be a soft-spoken person who shuns the limelight. Mueller, by contrast, often appears in the media. "They speak the same language and Ladaria is someone who is meek. He does not agitate the pope and does not threaten him," said a priest who works in the Vatican and knows both Mueller and Ladaria, asking not to be named. Since his election in 2013, Francis has given hope to progressives who want him to forge ahead with his vision for a more welcoming Church that concentrates on mercy rather than the strict enforcement of rigid rules they see as antiquated. Mueller is one of several cardinals in the Vatican who have publicly sparred with the pope. In 2015 he was among 13 cardinals who signed a secret letter to the pope complaining that a meeting of bishops discussing family issues was stacked in favor of liberals. The letter was leaked, embarrassing the signatories. "Clearly, the pope and Cardinal Mueller have not been on the same page for five years," the priest said. Mueller has criticized parts of a 2016 papal treatise called "Amoris Laetitia" (The Joy of Love), a cornerstone document of Francis' attempt to make the 1.2 billion-member Church more inclusive and less condemning. In it, Francis called for a Church that is less strict and more compassionate towards any "imperfect" members, such as those who divorced and remarried, saying "no one can be condemned forever". Conservatives have concentrated their criticism on the document's opening to Catholics who divorce and remarry in civil ceremonies, without getting Church annulments. Under Church law they cannot receive communion unless they abstain from sex with their new partner, because their first marriage is still valid in the eyes of the Church and therefore they are seen to be living in an adulterous state of sin. In the document the pope sided with progressives who had proposed an "internal forum" in which a priest or bishop decide jointly with the individual on a case-by-case basis if he or she can be fully re-integrated and receive communion. After the document was published Catholic bishops in some countries, including Germany, enacted guidelines on how priests could allow some divorced and remarried Catholics to receive the sacraments. But Mueller has said there should be no exceptions, making him a hero to conservatives who have made the issue a rallying point for their opposition to Francis. [Goanet] Stephen Fry on Donald Trump
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/stephen-fry-donald-trump-lies-belief-confidence-interview-a7737131.html Stephen Fry explains why Donald Trump believes his own bluster: 'Complete ignorance breeds confidence' -- by Samuel Osborne 'The incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence buoyed by something that feels to them like knowledge' The British comedian described the Dunning-Kruger effect, which leads the least proficient people to overestimate their own abilities. In a video entitled "Will Trump's lies cost lives? Can we break his spell? Killer cognitive biases," Fry used the example of McArthur Wheeler, who robbed two banks after learning lemon juice could be used as an invisible ink and believing it would hide him from CCTV. “When the police found him he was shocked,” Fry said. The 59-year-old went on to explain how the case led to the discovery of the Dunning-Kruger effect and why it is relevant to Mr Trump's presidency. Professors David Dunning and Justin Kruger "found that the least proficient students dramatically overestimated their own ability," Fry said. "The skills they lacked were the same skills required to recognise their incompetence." He added: "The incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence buoyed by something that feels to them like knowledge. Could the Dunning-Kruger effect explain some of Trump's actions?" Mr Fry also explained how the President is affected by salience bias, where people focus on shocking or negative news rather than the positive. He pointed to the example of Mr Trump's rhetoric about crimes committed by immigrants and explained that immigrants actually reduce the crime rate. "The cost of our distorted view may include a $20bn border wall," Fry added. The comedian also discussed how Mr Trump's uses repetition and incendiary statements as "a powerful diversion." "Complete ignorance breeds confidence," he added. "When Trump raises fear of immigrant terrorists," Fry said, "keep in mind that since 9/11, no one has died in a terrorist attack by immigrants from the countries he wants to ban. "Meanwhile the environmental protection agency has prevented hundreds of thousands of early deaths from air pollution alone." Paraphrasing American historian Daniel J Boorstin, Fry concluded: "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance. It is the illusion of knowledge." --- visit link for 87 Comments --- AP 416.660.0847

[Goanet] Fwd: LED STREET LIGHTS
From: AF P <goaculturel...@gmail.com> This letter finally explains the situation. If you are clear from the start, you will get people on your side. The first question: Who is authorization to make the purchase decision? The decision maker is responsible for bad outcomes and takes credit or money well spent. If Purchase Offices are getting a commission, that's the issue its not the bulbs. If installation and allocation is an issue, then that needs to be addressed. Indians seem to me to be tiring to fix a bent system in a very round about manner. How we would do it in Canada may be different, but the requirements are the same and solutions should be too. Why doesn't India have the best administration system compared to the next 100 countries reviewed? Its easy kind of info to get and examine it. As easy as specifications for LED bulbs and fixtures ... RIT to fix a bulb? There is a joke: How many does it take to change a light bulb... As indicated, it would seem, many people, mult-levels of government, the courts, and 100 years to change the prevailing procurement culture... --- Albert Peres 416.660.0847 On Tue, May 9, 2017 at 3:27 AM, Stephen Dias <steve.dia...@gmail.com> wrote: > Dear Albert Peres, > > Look I have worked in the Govt dept as scientist in Instrumentation section, > and I was dealing with the procurement of quite number of sophisticated > equipment and I know how things move in the purchase sections. > ... > > Stephen Dias > Dona paula >
