*Doha, Nov 12: Goan Welfare Association (GWA), one of Qatar’s leading and
most notable community associations, celebrated World Goa Day 2015 with
traditional pomp and splendour recently at the Mercure Grand Hotel in Doha.
The event saw Goans of all ages and classes in attendance, making the
annual event a huge success.*

*"The basic idea was to promote Goan culture, cuisine, customs, traditions,
music and language," explained GWA president Simon D'Silva. It displayed
all grandeur and pageantry with immensely captivating traditions and
delicious cuisine that displayed the real essence and identity of Goa.*

*"I am not really surprised by the number of people attending. Back home,
in Goa, we have celebrations and get-togethers so regularly and people miss
it here in Doha, so this event was a perfect setup for people to socialise
as well," he added.*

*Chief guest of the function Fr Anand Castelino inaugurated the function by
cutting a cake and appreciated the efforts of Goan Welfare Association in
getting the community together with such celebrations. Guest of honour
Mohammed Habib Nabi said that Simon D’Silva and his team have been doing a
marvelous job for the last 16 years by putting up such magnificent events
for the community.*

*The sizzling young, dynamic ace compere and Doha resident, Mahesh Prabhu
kept the audience engaged with his unique style of compering. DJ Glorio set

*The event continued with live music, duo Joyce and Aggie rendering popular

*Vanessa, who has been born and brought up in Doha, said, |There are so
many people here I haven’t met in ages. So, there is much catching up to do
and these events are perfect."*

*There were lots of valuable spot prizes to keep the audience entertained,
but it was the couple performing a Dulpod, which is a Goan dance song that
got the attendees excited as they made their way to the front of the stage
to enjoy the performance. The highlight of the event was Fashion Show by
the managing committee members with their spouses depicting various
traditional occupations, as well as festive costumes of Goa.*

*The excited crowd was seen lined up along the (imaginary) ramp to witness
the fashion show that was choreographed by Effey Noronha and well
co-ordinated by the GWA committee members. Each member was clad in a
traditional outfit and walked the ramp to songs with apt music for each of
them.*

*The fashion show depicted the Batkar (landlord), Poder (traditional Goan
baker), Render (toddy-tapper), Kunnbi (the earliest settlers of Goa),
Kharvi (the fishing community of Goa), while others depicted the
traditional attire worn by the Christian bride and bridegroom, the attire
worn during Sao Jao and Carnival, the clothes worn during the Portonne
(when the new son-in-law is invited for lunch at his in-laws’ house for a
reception on the second day after the marriage). While the groom wears a
suit, the bride is expected to wear a bright red sari.*

*The fashion show also depicted traditional outfits worn while performing
the Manddo and the Corridinho. Manddo is a musical form that evolved during
the 19th and 20th Century among Goan Catholics of Goa. While the men wear
formal coats, showing Portuguese influence, the women wear a unique Indian
costume called panobaju. The Corridinho is a form of Portuguese dance
performed in Goa, where the girls wear long skirts and tie their hair in a
scarf and the boys wear formal black trousers with a waistcoat and hats.*

*Throughout the fashion show, most parents were seen explaining outfits to
their children. "This is actually very educational, especially for the
children to learn a little about our fast-disappearing traditions," said
Sandra, who has spent over 30 years in Doha.*

*Following the fashion show, the buffet was thrown open. The organisers
tried to include a few Goan dishes such as chicken vindallo and a beef
version of the tantalising Sorpatell. "We tried, but since the chef is not
Goan, we could not include more dishes. Initially, we thought of having

Doha: Charming Minolta Fernandes crowned May Queen at GWA event

Doha, May 10: The Goan Welfare Association (GWA) has been the face and
voice of Goans living in the tiny oil-rich country of Qatar for the last 15
years without any doubt. Ably led by inimitable Simon D’Silva, the
association, since inception has joined hands with charitable groups such
as CRY and CARITAS and has rendered yeoman’s service in nurturing Goan
culture and spirit among the large number of Goan expatriates. On a larger
note the association has always been in the forefront of reaching out to
various causes back home, thus setting a shining example to all. It is
therefore not astonishing to see them host events with great aplomb and
success over the last one-and-a-half decade.
The association is known not only for meticulous planning but also perfect
execution and the annual May Queen Ball has been a true example for this.

For the fifteenth consecutive year, the GWA May Queen Ball proved to be a
mega success. As gorgeous Minolta Fernandes was crowned May Queen 2015 by
Bollywood heartthrobs Palomi Ghosh and Tanuj Virwani in the august company
of GWA president Simon D’Silva, chief guest Luizinho Faleiro, ex-chief
minister of Goa, the cheering audience erupted in joy appreciating GWA for
its great efforts in organizing May Queen Ball year after year, providing
perhaps the best platform for Goans living in Qatar to come together as
family.

Stunning Roona Venessa Britto from Mangalore was crowned first runner-up
while Goan beauty Glennis D’Souza was adjudged second runner-up at the 15th
May Queen Ball held in the majestic Giwana Hall of Hotel Radisson Blu here
on Thursday May 7 evening.
It was the much-anticipated entry of ‘Forefront’ that upped the mercury
within the four walls of unusually cool Giwana ballroom. As ‘Forefront’
belted out some of the everlasting numbers the audience stormed the dance
floor setting a perfect mood for a wonderful evening There was hardly
anyone who could resist the temptation from hitting the dance floor and
celebrating the evening.

Just like the ‘Forefront’ Updesh Swar doesn’t need an introduction. For
almost two decades he has been the ace compere in Goa hosting innumerable
events in his own signature style. He has carved a niche for himself with
his eloquent and witty compering. He has an amazing connect with the
audience and that’s makes so special. He was in his best elements on May 7
and proved again that he is not just mood-setter but a trend-setter too.

As the evening wore on with the memorable dances and fantastic music, the
guests of the charming Palomi Ghosh and handsome Tanuj Virwani and Luizinho
Feleiro, the ex-chief minister of Goa made their way into the jam-packed
Giwana Hall amidst the thunderous applause from the cheering gathering. GWA
president Simon D’Silva who has recently been appointed chairman for the
congress NRI global Goans was appreciated for his service in increasing the
membership of Congress party in the Gulf region. D’Silva was presented with
a special memento on the occasion by his managing committee members for
completing glorious 15 years of success; they are Paul Fernandes, Hazel
Rodrigues, Edgar Fernandes, Cajetan Rodrigues, Allan D’Souza, Tania
Rodrigues, Effey Noronha, Deepshikha Barretto, Edson Fernandes, Glorio
Fernandes and Pradeep Kotkar.

It was then the turn of Palomi Ghosh for a live performance. Palomi has
received huge appreciation for her acting skills in the hugely successful
Bardroy Barretto directorial Konkani movie Nachom-ia-Kumpasar. But today
her talent of hers was on display. She took everyone present by surprise
with her stupendous live singing of hit Goan numbers Bebdo and Pisso which
have been immortalized by Goan Nightingale Lorna. Palomi won everyone’s
heart with her singing leaving the gathering asking for more.

Doha’s favourite renowned DJ Glorio then took over and upped the tempo of
the evening with some scintillating numbers. As the evening went on, the
dance floor had couples flooding in huge numbers elegantly dancing to the
groovy and peppy songs of DJ Glorio.

After the guest took their seats Forefront led by incomparable Seby Pinto
along with Agatha on vocals, Savio on drums and vocals, Brendan on
keyboards and vocals, Melvin on guitar and vocals dished out a power-packed
performance throughout the evening. They ensured that everyone had a
tumultuous time clamoring for more and more with some truly scintillating
dance numbers. As they belted out some of the popular golden oldies, jazz
standards, retro, ballads, the bustling dance floor provided perfect deck
for Jive, Salsa, Cha Cha and other Latino dances

Doha: Goan Welfare Association gears up for 15th May Queen Ball

*Media Release*

*Doha, Apr 14:* The 15th Annual May Queen Ball, one of Doha's most
important events presented by Goan Welfare Association, Qatar, is all set
to roll on May 7 at The Radisson Blu, Doha.

Simon D’Silva, president of the GWA, said that the event which is an annual
feature has grown from strength to strength over the years. This year being
the 15th edition the organization is planning a mega celebration, he said.

The highlight of the event will be crowning of 15th May Queen by Bollywood
stars.

Goa’s No 1 band 'The Forefront' will perform through the night and teaming
up with the band will be Goa’s ace compere Updesh Swar.

Forefront took off into the music world for over a decade and from then it
was no looking back. The band took off right from the start by performing
for all the top shows in Goa and across India and abroad.

The success story of Forefront lies in the music they play, with strong
stage presence and a distinct ability in sensing the pulse of their
audiences.

Their extensive repertoire of music such as English retro, Bollywood,
latest from billboard charts and rock music is what makes every party a big
success.

The band is powered by five top musicians with Agatha on vocals, Savio on
drums and vocals, Brendan on keyboards and vocals, Melvin on guitar and
vocals, Seby on bass and vocals. Melvin also plays the Punjabi dhol.

Their musical combination attracts everyone’s attention at a party or at a
concert. When the band takes center stage, they are show stoppers and with
Updesh Swar at the helm, they are lethal and can set the dance floor on
fire. The crowd shouting out for more and not wanting to leave the floor is
a common feature for every show. 'Forefront' is one of the few bands in
India who can play a wide genre of music with perfection.

Their performance in Macau, China where they represented Goa at the '15th
Lusofonia Festival' was a feather in their cap. Their performance earned
them the 2nd place among nine countries including Brazil and Portugal.

Forefront's electrifying performance for Goa Day celebration in Cranford,
London on July 28, 2013 had an overwhelming response from a crowd of over
12,000 people. The band was featured on Sony TV in London and also in Pan
Asian countries. Forefront opened up for an international act 'The Bellamy
of Brothers Concert' in Goa.

Goan Welfare Association has rendered yeoman’s service in nurturing Goan
culture and spirit among the large number of Goan expatriates. On a larger
note the association has always been in the forefront of reaching out to
various causes back home, thus setting a shining example to all. It is

GPCC forms NRI Global Goans Cell

*Media Release*

*Doha, Jan 10:* Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) under the wise
leadership of Luizinho Faleiro has announced the establishment of NRI
Global Goans Cell under the Chairmanship of Qatar based, Simon D’Silva. The
establishment of this cell is to express solidarity with Goans overseas
understanding their contribution and sacrifices, to spread awareness of
government schemes amongst the global Goan community with a view to
motivate them for productive occupations, business and employment in Goa,
to ensure that the state government creates better and proper avenues for
children of NRI Global Goans to take up higher education in Goa, to work
with the government for establishment of a special NRI window to provide
quick and speedy relief and services, understanding the NRI potential to

facilitate setting up of NRI Global Goans Chamber of Commerce for

in business and industry, to foster social and cultural bonds with Global
Goans.

The Congress NRI Global Goans Cell consists of the following managing
committee; chairman, Qatar based Simon D’Silva, convenor for Qatar, Edson
Fernandes, executives members for Qatar, Mathew Estrocio, Pradeep Kotkar
and Sidesh Gaonkar, convenor for Bahrain, Francis Correia and executive
member Gabriel Crasto. Convenor for Kuwait, Carmo Santos and executive
members for Kuwait are Julio Cardozo, Gaspar Crasto and Ramdas Revadkar.
Oman executive members are Domnic Colaco and Francis Fernandes. United Arab
Emirates (Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain
and Fujairah) executive members are Henry Fernandes, Santana Fernandes,
Gabriel Fernandes and Johnito Rodrigues. Executive member for USA is Effie
Tavares, UK is Ravi Vaz, Italy is Esmelinda Fernandes, Australia
is Agostinho De Melo and more executive members in the committee from other
countries will be announced shortly.

GPCC president Luizinho Faleiro said that remittances from Goans who are
working in 43 countries – mainly Arabian Gulf, has given a big push to the
state economy but expressed regrets that the funds deposited in banks are
being diverted for investments in other states.

Faleiro said that migration to foreign countries has been one of the
biggest push factors in the economic advancement of Goa during the last
three decades. He also said that migration of people to foreign countries
for better prospects has been a dominant feature of the state.

He said that the remittance-induced changes have been felt in almost all
the sub-sectors of the economy. The positive impact of remittances is seen
in bank deposits, housing, real estate and the purchasing power largely in
rural households.

Luizinho said that factors such as decline in agriculture, lack of
sufficient employment/professional opportunities in Goa and urge for higher
and stable earnings have influenced Goans going abroad. Of late, there is
an unhealthy perception gaining ground that “Niz Goenkars” can make their
future only in foreign countries, he added.

Faleiro also stated that earlier Goans migrated for employment with firm
roots in Goa. The trend nowadays is to emigrate for good and final
settlement. The threat to identity and demography lies in this trend, he
stated further. The sustained international migration has led to the
development of ‘remittance-economy’ in many parts of the Goa, particularly
the coastal talukas of Bardez, Salcete and Tiswadi.

Emigration has been a dominant feature of the Christian community in Goa. A
large numbers of Goans working abroad are now returning back to the state
especially from Gulf countries. The returned emigrants face lot of problems
back at home like social, cultural, economic, psychological and health
related.

Faleiro also said that earlier industry contributed a large chunk to the
state economy followed by mining and tourism, but of late “money order” has
been main contributor to the deposits in the bank which only a minimum
amount was lent to the borrowers in the state.

Faleiro said that a study conducted by him has revealed that Goan emigrants
were spread in 43 countries of the world. Faleiro further said that his
study has also revealed that nearly 54 percent of the amounts received from
abroad were used for day to day household expenses, 18.2 percent for
education, 15 percent for debt

Goan Welfare Association in Doha is all set to celebrate its ‘World
Goa Day 2014’ with the preview of the much awaited Konkani film
‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ (Let’s dance to the rhythm) on 28th November 2014
at the Royal Plaza Cinema, Al-Sadd at 4.30 p.m.

The film has been produced by Goa Folklore Productions and is schedule
to be released in Goa from 04th December, 2014 onwards. The film is a
nostalgic recreation of a Goan era gone by. An era that will showcase
the musical heritage of this little pocket on earth called GOA.

The film main actors are Vijay Maurya and Palomi Ghosh besides our
very own Prince Jacob and John D’Silva. The two Goan stage stalwarts
will regale and surprise you with their most amazing and engrossing
performance.

As they say…every land has a story. For Goa, that story is Music… the
Art of the Muses as the Greeks would say.

The voice of Goa is the voice of its music. Influenced heavily by 450
years of Portuguese colonial rule, it is a voice that speaks of human
failing and creative triumph, passion and jealousy, love and betrayal,
all in the same breath... blowing lustily through the brass tubes of a
jazz trumpet.

‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ (Lets dance to the rhythm) is a Konkani feature
film - a tribute to Goan Music and her Musicians. Narrated through the
emotional rollercoaster of a love story destined to tragedy, it
celebrates Goan music through the eyes of its eclectic generation of
musicians in the 1960s and 70s.

The film weaves its lilting narrative through 20 timeless Konkani
songs that convey the timbre and texture of a pitch and rhythm they
made their own.

Nachom-ia Kumpasar is a nostalgic tale set in the times these
musicians lived and died in - unrecognized, unappreciated. And unsung.

Vijay Maurya is an actor writer. He has acted in critically
acclaimed films like Nishikant’s ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ Anurag Kashyap’s
‘Black Friday’. He is also a screenplay writer and has won the
‘National award’ for best original screenplay for ‘Chillar Party. As
Actor his few credits are Bhootnath Returns, Chillar Party, Mumbai
Meri Jaan, Black Friday and Paanch. Palomi Ghosh a very excitable
young lady who found her calling to acting at the ‘theatre electives’
at North Carolina University where she was studying. This lead her
interest in acting and her credits are ‘The Waiting City’, Australian
film, directed by Claire McCarty, ‘Gandhi of the Moment’, an Indo
American Feature, directed by Kranti Kanade.

Ester Noronha, Mangalorean multi-lingual lass is a talented singer
actor in Hindi Kannada films. She has sang in Nachom-ia Kmpasar. As
a Konkani singer, she had an exceptional debut album released ‘Kallzan
Thavn’ which was widely accepted across the Diaspora. She has a few
more albums along with Hubert D’Souza, the singer musician from
Mangalore. She has acted in Hindi films such as ‘Mr. Money’ and
‘Qayamat hi Qayamat’ and Kannada releases such as ‘Nimhans’
‘Naavika’, Ester is a trained carnatic music artiste and a
Bharatanatyan to boot.

Cielda Pereira, a singer in the film from a small beginning has come a
long way. After many local competitions in her village of Betalbatim
conquered, she is on a high after winning ‘Goencho Avaz’, the voice of
Goa Competition, an event held under the umbrella of the Herald Group.
Cielda is very young yet has a great head on her shoulder. The
melodious voice and a scintillating smile add to her demure and charm.

The preview of the film and celebration of World Goa Day will be in
presence of distinguished Chief Guest James John, Assistant General
Manager – Marketing for Gulf Times (Number 1 English daily newspaper
in Qatar). To preside over will be Glen Barretto, Director of
“EVEREST” a TV serial on Star Plus produced by Ashutosh Gowariker.
Bardroy Barretto, the Director and Angelo Braganza, Producer of
Nachom-ia Kumpasar will be Guests of honour.

Versatile Reena Castelino will host the event. “It is a great honour
and privilege for Konkani speaking community in Qatar to witness the
preview of this movie prior to its release in Goa (India)”, said Simon
D’Silva, President of Goan Welfare Association. D’Silva also added
that this feature film is produced after decades.

The preview of the film in Qatar is supported by Expat Properties
(www.expat-group.com).

It was truly a memorable evening for Konkani lovers in Qatar on Friday,
November 8. Sonia, a versatile singer who was flown in to celebrate the
World Goa Day first mesmerized the audience at Al Arabi Stadium and then at
their gathering later on in the evening at Al Andalus.

She weaved magic, rendering hit songs in four languages. After taking the
Konkani speaking folks to a nostalgic past she swayed the whole crowd in
the stadium, who had come to watch the Al Alhi and Al Rayan football match,
with popular Hindi songs like Dhol Baaje.

Fittingly, the Konkani community were rewarded as Al Alhi beat Al Rayan
4:1, Al Alhi being their home team. Agnelo Rodrigues and Lance D’Souza
provided the music for Sonia's show.

The crowd had a marvelous time as they participated in various activities
during half time of the match.

Later on in the evening they were again treated to some scintillation music
by Sonia and DJ Glorio. The crowd had a good chance to commemorate the
World Goa Day as they got a taste of both what Goans like most football and
some good music. DJ Glorio took the crowd of all ages, to rock all through
the evening.

As a token of appreciation, Simon D’Silva the president of Goan Welfare
Association (GWA), presented a momento to Sonia Shirsat for her spectacular
performance.

It was also a special evening for the GOA football team to get together
with their families and friends, before the start of the much awaited Qatar
Amateur League (QAL) commencing on the 11th November 2013. GOA football
team will be playing their first match on the 12thNovember against the

Delfi Fernandes. Simon D’Silva and GWA’s team thanked Sonia Shirsat and the
sponsors Socorro Vaz and Milton Pimenta. Simon appreciated the crowd
present and thanked them in abundance for patronizing and promised many
more such social and sporting events in the future.

***The proposed Amateur Football League aims to bring all those who play
the game in Qatar under its banner, writes Kumar Ravi.*
THE Qatar Football Association (QFA) has embarked on a mission to expand
the base of the game through a systematic and methodical approach, aligning
with its own Vision-2021 which, in turn, is linked with the Qatar National
Vision 2030.

The QFA’s Vision-2021 relates directly to the goals to be achieved before
the country hosts the FIFA World Cup in ’22, while Vision ’30 and its
National Development Strategy will allow Qatar to show the world what it is
capable of and organise events that would remain etched in people’s minds
for many decades to come.

However, for the QFA, the biggest ambition is to make sure they leave a
rich legacy behind, after the World Cup. It is simply not all about huge
stadiums and other mega-infrastructural facilities, but also about
inspiring the entire people in Qatar to make sports a way of their lives.

Keeping this in mind, the QFA has decided to launch the Third Division
League from this season. It is learnt from a reliable source that this is a
dream project of QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani.

To start with, it will be called the Amateur Football League (AFL), with 14
teams participating in the first year. The QFA wants to bring all those
amateurs who play football in the country under the AFL banner and then
gradually transform it into a semi-professional league and eventually a
professional one.

According to the blue print, the QFA wants all those who are presently
outside the purview of the Qatar Stars League (14 teams) and revamped
Second Division (18) under the AFL umbrella, in a more structured format
with uniform rules and regulations.

At present, there are many football tournaments taking place in the
country, organised by different institutions and companies, say like
ministries, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Olympic Committee staff, Al Kass TV
channel, and several communities like Egyptians, Sudanese, Indians,
English, Scottish and Brazilians, to name but a few.

The AFL aims to bring all these elements under a structured format and,
within two-three years’ time, hopes to offer them a chance to play in the
season-opening Sheikh Jassim Cup and prestigious Emir’s Cup.

“To start with, this’ll be an amateur league, but professionally managed,”
said a source close to the project.

Officials linked to this project held a series of meetings with different
community and company representatives and have already sent official
invitation letters, signed by QFA General Secretary Saud Abdulaziz Al
Mohannadi, to the 14 teams identified for the first year.

As per the regulations, these teams will be assigned a home club (one of
the QSL clubs) and will be given access to its facilities for training.

“This is going to give us a big boost,” said Mohammed Easa, an official
with the proposed Kerala team, one of the two Indian outfits likely to be
seen in action, a Goan team being the other.

“We’ve been conducting several tournaments for our community members

GWA's Annual Sao Joao Bash held in Qatar

Sao Joao feast is celebrated on 24 June annually all over Goa. Those who
have migrated and immigrated also carry this flavour of celebration in the
distant lands, thus maintaining a link with their land of ancestors. In
Qatar, Goan Welfare Association (GWA) celebrated Sao Joao festival on 27
June 2013 at Al Andalus. Goa may be in the height of rainy season in late
June, but enthusiasm for the annual Sao Joao festival is never dampened. Men
and boys jump into wells, ponds and rivers, mimicking the joyous celebration
of St John's heralding of Christ. The jumping with joy is externally
associated with the custom, tradition and culture accompanying the feast
devoid of religious thought. The tradition and culture has no biblical
roots, it is entirely folklore specific to Goa.

GWA's president Simon D'Silva welcomed everyone for their fourth annual Sao
Joao celebration and profusely thanked the main sponsor Melwyn Barretto,
co-sponsor Milton Pimenta, DJ Glorio, MC Archie D'Mello, Arjun Anuja,
guests and well-wishers. D'Silva praised the efforts put in by the committee
members to organize such an excellent evening within 6 days. Rosario Dias
led by his group sang Viva Sao Joao, a song by late C. Alvares with Agnelo
Rodrigues on the guitar. The unique distinction of this tradition is the
wearing of colourful wreaths, crowns, coronets, Tiaras of flowers, leaves,
creepers and with fruits at times. The guests joined in special loud
colourful attires, giving it a distinct flavour. In Goa, the well used to be
full during this time of the season; hence jumping only in the wells was
unique, which is now changed to a swimming pool in Qatar. The jumpers
retrieved the fruits thrown in the swimming pool and the children too
participated having fun and learning about the tradition. Of course there
was a pompous celebration of the guests as one family on the evening of 27th
June in Qatar. DJ Glorio provided typical music keeping the folks and
youngsters on the floor continuously till the wee hours in the morning.
There was the spirit of adventure, revelry, entertainment, creativity, fun
and pure joy. Various prizes for headgear and other spot prizes were given
away. Game of the evening was conducted by Delfi Fernandes and fabulous
prizes were given away. It was a real treat to watch the guests with crowns
of leaves and varied fruits on their heads. Loads of spot prizes were given
to the guests. The unique rituals and celebration of this annual event
provides an unusual glimpse of local custom and culture, made everyone feel
at home away from home. The depiction of professionally well organised
events, with lots of fun and incessant entertainment by Goan Welfare
Association, encouraged guests to demand with GWA to organise more and more
functions at least one in every month. Guests have appreciated and thanked
the organizers for an excellent Sao Joao celebration.

*Doha, Jul 1:* Goa may be at the height of rainy season in late June, but
enthusiasm for the annual Sao Joao festival is never dampened. Men and boys
jump into wells, ponds and rivers, mimicking the joyous celebration of St
John’s heralding of Christ.

In Qatar, Goan Welfare Association (GWA) celebrated Sao Joao festival on
Friday June 28 at Al Andalus. GWA’s president welcomed everyone and
introduced the new concept band DJV with combined music of DJ Glorio and
live singing of Abu Dhabi fame Camillo Colaco.

Agnelo and Joyce too performed together along with Rosario Dias and
Natcey Barretto with one man band Agnelo Rodrigues. Couple singers Rupesh
and Celia provided added performances. The jumping act symbolizes St John
The Baptist’s leaping in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when visited by Mary
who was expecting Jesus. Thus the festival came to be known as the feast of
Saint John the Baptist, where jumping with joy, especially in water bodies
was the highlight.

The Sao Joao festival is most pompously celebrated in Goa amongst the
Catholic community and is dedicated to St John the Baptist, and is
celebrated on June 24 every year. This occasion marks the celebration by
the local youth in the villages of Goa who normally jump into wells
according to the existing tradition of Sao Joao festival. They consume
plenty of fruits on this occasion and are virtually unstoppable when they
indulge in revelry.

It was a real treat to watch the guests with crowns of leaves and varied
fruits on their heads. Loads of spot prizes were given to the guests. A
lucky winner pearl necklace was sponsored by Expat Properties.

GWA thanked all the guests for their support and cooperation and also
thanked the performers for their exhilarating performances.

Smiling Beauty Tina Williams Wins GWA Annual May Queen 2012

Doha, May 3: The full-house Giwana Hall in Ramada Plaza here went berserk in
applause and burst into celebration as sizzling beauty Tina Williams was

company of popular actress Neelam Kothari, chief guest former chief minister
of Goa Luizinho Faleiro, Khader T. of Capitol One and Goan Welfare
Associaton president Simon D'Silva. Tina who also walked away with the 'Best
Smile' of the evening award, was perhaps the best choice to be the 12th May
Queen as her wisdom matched her beauty and sizzling smile. While bold and
beautiful Tanushree Salani was crowned as the first Runner-up, elegant

The evening was set to be memorable one and it did live up to its
reputation. In the last 11 years if anything has been synonymous with Goa
and Goans in Qatar, then it has to be the annual May Queen Ball. The event
being organized by the Goan Welfare Association led by dynamic and social
activist well known figure Simon D'Silva has always been known for quality
with melodious music, prizes, gifts, surprises and more.

It was Goa's top-most live band 'Forefront' that set the tone for a fabulous
evening with the evergreen number 'Dancing Queen'. As 'Forefront' belted out
some of the everlasting numbers the dance floor within the Giwana Hall of
Ramada Plaza obliged with glee. There was hardly anyone who could resist the
temptation from storming to the dance floor and celebrating the evening.

Just like the 'Forefront' Updesh Swar doesn't need an introduction. He's
just not the mood-setter but a trend-setter too. He has been one of the best
hosts of our times and on Thursday May 3, he lived up to his top billing. He
has the unique ability to hold sway over the audience and the event that
invariably set the mood for the event.

As the evening wore on with the memorable dances and fantastic music, the
guests of the evening evergreen actress, sizzling performer Neelam Kothari,
handsome Samir Soni and Luizinho Faleiro, the ex-chief minister of Goa made
their way into the jam-packed Giwana Hall amidst the thunderous applause
from the cheering gathering.

While the Forefront led by incomparable Seby Pinto along with Melvin
Rosario, Savio Fernandes, Agnelo Mascarenhas and lead female vocalist
Estella Pinto kept the gathering busy on the dance floor, DJ Glorio had the
audience asking for more as he played some of the most groovy and peppy
numbers. As DJ Glorio made it a point to play fantastic music to cater
exclusively to the taste and choice of all, the dance floor had the couples
flooding in large numbers.

The glittering full-house evening had lot in store in the form of surprises
and prizes as the organizers showered in number of attractive prizes to the
people on the dancing floor. The first dancers, the best dancers, the young
dancers all were caught in surprise as valuable prizes came their way.

But the icing on the cake for the evening came in the form of the crowning
of the 12th May Queen who was chosen among 15 beautiful contestants. The
beauty pageant was judged by Famous bollywood director Glen Baretto, Former
Miss Singapore Kelly Kaur Adams and Archie D'Mello of Qatar Airways. R.
Seetharam, CEO of Doha Bank, Ali Farabi of Qatar Airways and Morgan
Fernandes of Qatari Industrial Equipment were felicitated for their strong
support.

[Goanet] Exhilarating Children's Christmas Tree Celebration held by Goan Welfare Association (GWA), Qatar

2011-12-15 Thread Simon D'silva
Exhilarating Children's Christmas Tree Celebration held by Goan Welfare
Association (GWA), Qatar

Goan Welfare Association (GWA) ushered in the Christmas season of gaiety,
love and happiness by hosting its first annual Children's Christmas Tree
Party on Sunday, 4th December 2011 at Al-Andalus Club, Doha Qatar.
Traditions and customs are the special flavor of any festivity and that
holds true for Christmas as well. It is a festival that is known for its
spirit of joyousness and its celebratory atmosphere commemorating the birth
of Jesus.

It was the most exhilarating occasion for both children and their parents. A
large handmade Christmas tree with decorative bauble was the main attraction
in the hall. The beautiful small Christmas trees all covered in lights,
ornaments, tinsels and boughs of Holly adorned the hall and the Christmas
carols playing in the background set the scene for Children Christmas Tree
Party. Our hearts are light and Gay for it's a lovely evening today echoed
Miss Gina Norohna and Long time ago in Bethlehem as the holy bible say,
Mary's born child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas day resonated Master
Sanlorf D'silva, comperes of the evening, greeting all the children, parents
and guests with their Christmas message.

GWA Cultural Director, Tanya Rodrigues led the praise and worship thanking
Almighty God and invoking the Lord's blessing on all present. GWA President,
Simon D'Silva extended his warm welcome and invited all children, parents
and guests to have fun and enjoy the evening to their heart content. Cajie
Rodrigues, GWA Event Director announced the programme for an evening of fun,
games and surprises. A chorus of young children all dressed in white and red
sporting Santa caps sang the Christmas carols. And of course the parents as
well sang the Christmas Carols for the children.

The carol singing was graced by Agnelo (Aggie) Rodrigues on Keyboard.
Dolrich the man behind Santa's suit, danced to the tune of Jingle bells that
brought more joyousness and smiles on the faces of young, led the Christmas
march for the children, distributed sweets and played games with the
children. A newborn baby Trevor Fernandes together with his parents cut the
Christmas Cake signifying the birthday of Baby Jesus. Martin Mascarenhas,
Vice-President of GWA thanked all present and expressed his profound
appreciation for making the celebration a memorable one and promised even
more fun next year. He lauded the dedication and hard work of Godfrey
Noronha and Effie Noronha GWA Cultural Secretary for the Stage set-up, hall
decoration, organising games and also appreciated the entire GWA committee
for putting up such impressive Christmas Tree celebrations.

While the children had fun, the Adults too had a lovely time. No festive
occasion can be complete without dancing and this held true for the
Christmas tree party as well, people tapped their feet to the music rendered
by DJ Glorio. Thanksgiving grace was led by Chynara Rodrigues and delicious
dinner was served. Every child's face lit up with joy as they received their
Christmas gifts. The winners of the various games are as follows:- below
8yrs Santa Game: Dean Aditi; Below 8 yrs Bursting the Baloon: Aaron and
Cavin; 9-12 yrs G Ring: Crescentia Rebecca; 13-17 yrs: Passing the Stick:
Swizel Giosa. Active participation by all the children was the key to the
success of the GWA Christmas Tree Party 2011. Handling the 100 children of
varied age with ease and ensuring every child enjoyed each moment of the
evening was a task well done by the enthusiastic GWA committee members. A
special word of thanks and appreciation goes to Sunil Crasto for
photographic capture of the entire event.

GWA Wishes everyone a Blessed Christmas and Happy New Year 2012.

Doha: World Goa Day Concludes with John D'Silva's Full-house 'Vollok'

Doha: He came, he performed and he conquered hearts. Ace comedian and
playwright John D'Silva's new musical play 'Vollok' organized by Goan
Welfare Association was again testimony of his unique and enormous talent
that has made him 'The Emperor of Konkani Stage' and has led him to walk
into 'Limca Book of Records 2010'.

The tiatr was held as part of the concluding ceremony of World Goa Day 2011
at Al Ghazal Club here on Friday November 4, 2011 evening.

Eversince his first tiatr 'Vell' that was released in 1996, John has become
a household name among Goans both in Goa and abroad. Though he began with
series of villainous characters portraying negative shades, his leading role
as outright comedian in the 1999 tiatr Úmannem' gave turn to his career. The
tiatr ended up creating several records in the Goan Konkani theatre.
Thereafter John has hardly put forward a wrong step. His tiatrs are known
for powerful dialogues, moral and social message relevant to the times.

'Vollok' emphasizes the importance of family life while upholding value of
human life. Today family life has taken the backseat as humans have become
more and more individualistic in search of identity, name and fame. Family
values that once formed core of one's life are dwindling as the younger,
'fast food' generation's needs and priorities are changing. But 'Vollok'
stresses that at the end what matters is moral, spiritual values that are
the foundation of family, the miniature society. The musical play had
moments of hilarious comedy that sent the audience in peals of laughter,
heart-wrenching emotional parts bringing tears in the eyes of the beholders.
A modern wife who fights for the rights of animals but aborts her own child,
a husband who fails to get love and care from his wife falls in love with
his maid, a housemaid who rises above her petty job and becomes pillar of
strength to her master when latter's wife aborts their child, Thomas, who
constantly upholds the family values, rebukes people when they are wrong,
were the leading characters of the tiatr.

While John D'Silva was at his witty best driving home powerful message
through his crisp dialogues, the rest of the cast, namely, Natty, Mita, Joe,
Anicet, Peter De Pedda, Socorro De St. Cruz and Nato mesmerized the audience
with their acting and singing.

John D'Silva was felicitated by Agnelo Paul D’Souza of Friends Cultural
Group for conferring with 'Yuva Srujan Puroskar' award given by ministry of
Art and Culture, Goa government. John D’Silva was also felicitated by the
Goan Welfare Association for conferring “Limca Book of Records 2010” and a
momento was presented to him by the Chief guest of the evening Jaisingh L.
Rane, noted entrepreneur and social worker based in Qatar. Filipe
Mascarenhas was felicitated for being the most senior member in the group
who has contributed in the field of music who started writing and performing
music at the age of 16 and a momento was presented by Ali Farabi, sales
manager of Qatar Airways who was the guest of honour of the evening.

Meeta's first VCD ‘Ávoiche Koxtt' was also released on the occasion.

Goan Welfare Association under the able leadership of Simon D'Silva has been
in the forefront of social and cultural activities in Doha. The Association
has over the years has grown into a premier forum in Doha giving fillip to
Goan culture, theatre and traditions through its various programmes. Simon
D'Silva has led the association along with his dynamic team with dedication
and commitment to social causes.

The association felicitated Daijiworld representative Alexis Castelino with
a trophy for his dedicated contribution and Simon D'Silva thanked Daijiworld
and gulf times for their continuous support.

Goan Welfare Association (GWA), celebrates World Goa Day on 21st October
2011.

Goans in Qatar celebrates World Goa Day since 2003. Celebrate Goa and
Goans, being the watchword of World Goa Day was exhibited in vibrant and
multihued celebration by the Goan Welfare Association in Qatar every year.
World Goa Day was presented in a riot of colours and lively music depicting
the Goan identity, culture, language, cuisine and traditions by Goans of
different ages. Goans based in different countries celebrate World Goa Day
in Solidarity on 20th August to commemorate inclusion of Konkani in the
eighth schedule of the Indian constitution. But some will schedule their
observance of the international event on a date best suited to their
communities. On GOA DAY, Goans will remind themselves of the need to work to
preserve their culture, music, history, language, cuisine, and art for their
children, the non-Goan community and for posterity.

It is a wonderful movement that have started and the Goans who are working
at various levels and in various fields connected with the nurturing of the
Goan identity and development of the Konkani language are overjoyed about
the success of this movement. On GOA DAY, Goans remember 1992, when the two
Houses of the Indian Parliament unanimously voted and approved an amendment
to include our mother tongue Konkani in the eighth schedule of the
Constitution of India, thus according it national status. It is also a day
where Goans world-wide join in SOLIDARITY to celebrate being a GOAN, said
Simon D'Silva, president of the association.

Last year Eric Ozario, co-founder of Mandd Sohbann and Kalaangann who was
the chief guest said, Konkans are a community of 50 lakhs konkani speakers.
Out of the 4000 odd Indian languages, Konkani is the 18th language included
in the eighth schedule of the Indian constitution at that time and now there
are 21 official languages. Konkani has been introduced as a third language
in Karnataka Schools. Is there any place for Konkanni in our Hearts or in
our Homes? Have we given Konkanni to our children - which was given to us
by our forefathers? Have we carried on with the legacy? Is it good to
continue with the legacy? questioned Eric Ozario. He said Keralites call
themselves Malayalis, People from Tamil Nadu call themselves Tamils, let us
all people from the Konkan regions of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka call
ourselves as Konkans. Ozario complimented Goan Welfare Association for the
marvelous work, depicting the language and true goan culture in a distant
miles away. Last year's event has highlighted the importance of sustaining
the legacy of the Konkani language and the Goan heritage for the future
generations. Goan Welfare Association urge community members to teach their
children Konkani language. Teaching and imparting training in Konkani
language may not help our children to get jobs, but it will not make us
poor, but will enrich our future generations with a treasure trove of our
language.

Goan Welfare Association, Qatar will be celebrating World Goa Day on 21st
October 2011 at AL GHAZAL CLUB at 3.30 pm with greater performances than the
past years. Having achieved unprecedented success in previous years, GWA
invites it's members, the Goan and Konkani community to an evening filled
with fun, music, cultural programme and many more exciting performances. A
22 member cultural group will be specially flown in to Qatar along with
other artists to perform. Several other local artists will also perform on
the World Goa Day. ENTRY IS FREE. More details can be had on 0491,

[Goanet] Qatar: Goan Welfare Association Celebrates SAO JOAO.

2011-06-28 Thread Simon D'silva
The members of Goan Welfare Association (GWA) celebrated the popular Sao
Joao festival in Doha on 23 June 2011 at Al Andalus that continued till the
wee hours in the morning of 24 June.

GWA's president Simon D'Silva in his welcome speech briefly explained the
importance of this festival and the traditional way it is celebrated back in
Goa.

He thanked all the members and associates for the generous support that has
contributed in the success of the association in all the events that it has
organized, specially the cultural team that put in great efforts.

Simon D'Silva introduced the Chief Guest for the evening Fr. Ronnie Serrao,
who came all the way from Chicago, U.S.A. to attend this special occasion
celebrated for the first time in Qatar.

Fr. Ronnie, the former parish priest of Loliem church thanked the people of
Qatar for extending their support to him in the year 2005 and briefly
explained the tradition of Sao Joao festival celebration.

'Sao Joao' is the feast of St John The Baptist. He explained that the
jumping act symbolizes St. John The Baptist's leaping in his mother
Elizabeth's womb when visited by Mary who was expecting Jesus.

Thus the festival came to be known as the feast of Saint John the Baptist,
where jumping with joy', specially in water bodies was the highlight.

The Sao Joao festival is most pompously celebrated in Goa amongst the
Catholic community and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist which is
celebrated on 24th June every year. This occasion marks the celebration by
the local youth in the Villages of Goa who normally jump into wells
according to the existing tradition of Sao Joao festival.

They consume plenty of fruits on this occasion and are virtually unstoppable
when they indulge in revelry. Specially in Salcete taluka, different types
of folk dances or Mandos are held which are popularly known as Sangodds.
Fruits and other eatables are exchanged between friends and relatives.

It is a real treat to watch the local youth with crowns of leaves and varied
fruits on their heads going out in processions and jumping into wells to
have fun. Later, they enjoy a lavish feast of meat and seafood marking the
end of the festival. The rainy season is a perfect foil for the Sao Joao
festival as most of the people enjoy it more when its raining heavily.

Following Fr. Ronnie's address, the young and old wearing the traditional
'Leaves Crown' (KOPEL) then plunged into the pool.

The evening continued with DJ music, games for kids, snacks and sumptuous
buffet. Cajetan Rodrigues, Director of Events proposed the vote of thanks.
The Managing Committee members; Simon D'Silva - President, Martin
Mascarenhas - Vice President, Hazel Rodrigues - General Secretary, Allan
Desouza - Finance Controller/Advisor, Cajetan Rodrigues - Diretor Events,
Glorio Fernandes - Coordinator Events, Tania Rodrigues - Director Cultural,

11th Annual May Queen Ball a big hit in Qatar

Report: Gladson D’Almeida

Mridula Mukundan Crowned May Queen 2011 at GWA’s 11th Annual May Queen Ball

As the bold and beautiful Mridula Mukundan was crowned May Queen 2011 by the
distinguished Bollywood celebrities including Shreyas Talpade, Jay Bhanushali
and Mahhi Vij in the august company of Luizinho Faleiro, Agnelo Fernandes,
Dayanand Narvekar, Goan Welfare Association president Simon D’Silva, committee
members, and the large number of Goans and other nationalities gathered within
the cool ambience of Giwana Ballroom broke into celebration. While hot
Brazilian
lady Polly was chosen as the first runner-up, the second runner-up spot was
bagged by Anjali Bajaj at a glittering gathering here on Thursday April 28.
The Goan Welfare Association has been the face and voice of Goans living in the
tiny oil-rich country of Qatar for the last 11 years without any doubts. Ably
led by inimitable, social activist and multi-talented Simon D’Silva, the
association has often joined hands with charitable groups such as CRY and
CARITAS and has rendered yeoman’s service in nurturing Goan culture and spirit
among the large number of Goan expatriates. On a larger note the association
has
always been in the forefront of reaching out to various causes back home, thus
setting a shining example to all. It is therefore not astonishing to see them
host events with great aplomb and success over the last decade. The association
is known not only for meticulous planning but also perfect execution and the
annual May Queen Ball has been the true example for this.
The evening was perfectly planned for a gala entertainment and it lived up to
everyone’s expectations as the 11th May Queen Ball hosted by Goan Welfare
Association kept the large number of participants asking for more.
The charming comperes for the evening sizzling Cheryl Almeida and spectacular
Xavier Fernandes set the ball rolling with the welcome address. But it was
UAE’s
fame DJ Glorio who set the mood for the evening with some scintillating
numbers.
As the evening wore on, the dance floor had couples flooding in huge numbers
elegantly dancing to the groovy and peppy songs of DJ Glorio.
However it was the much-awaited entry of popular band ‘The Syndicate’ that
upped
the mercury within the four walls of unusually cool Giwana ballroom. The
Syndicate’, one of Goa’s legendary bands satiated the music buds of all the
guests by playing fantastic music catering exclusively to taste and choice of
all. As the time flew, the “Syndicate’’ proved as to why they are considered as
numero uno band in Goa for such a long period. With mercurial Paul D’Souza on
drums, incomparable Diego Fernandes on bass and vocals, young Adrian Pereira on
lead guitar and elegant Darryl Rodrigues, the stage was perfectly set for
peerless Raul D’Mello and Sharon Rodrigues. The popular duo ensured that
everyone had a tumultuous time clamoring for more and more with some peppy and
foot-tapping numbers.
The glittering full-house evening had lot in store in the form of surprises and
prizes as the organizers rained in number of attractive prizes to the people on
the dancing floor. The first dancers, the best dancers, the young dancers all
were caught in surprise as valuable prizes came their way.
As the entertainment continued and The Syndicate kept the floor busy, special
guests of the evening Bollywood stars Shreyas Talpade, Jay Bhanushali, Mahi Vij
along with former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro, former Law Minister
Dayanand Narvekar and MLA Agnelo Fernandes made their entry to the jam-packed
hall amidst the thunderous applause of the gathering. However, on a sadder note
another Bollywood star Aditya Pancholi who was supposed to be the part of the
evening could not make it to programme owing to the demise of one of his family
members.
After the guests took their seats, The Syndicate kept the audience well on the
dance floor with some truly scintillating dance numbers. As they belted out
some
of the popular golden oldies, jazz standards, retro, ballads, the bustling
dance
floor provided perfect deck for Jive, Salsa, Cha Cha and other Latino dances.
The May Queen contest was very glamorous and conducted in great style and
fanfare. Each contestant was a winner in her own way with graceful looks, proud
walk, witty answers and alluring smile, making it very difficult for the jury
panel that consisted of Doha Bank CEO R Seetharaman, James John, advertising
and
marketing manager of Gulf Times and Francis Correa, president of Young Goans
Bahrain. As the ‘Million Dollar Smile’ celebrity Jay Bhanushali shot witty yet
thought-provoking questions, the contestants came out with equally-good answers
compelling the audience to put together their hands in sheer appreciation
beauty
and wisdom of the contestants.
Finally it was fabulous Mridula Mukundan who came out with flying and

Konkani and Goan Culture depicted on World Goa Day 2010 in Qatar.

“Celebrate Goa and Goans”, being the watchword of World Goa Day was
exhibited in vibrant and multihued celebration on the 30th of September,
2010, by the Goan Welfare Association in Qatar. World Goa Day 2010 was
presented in a riot of colours and lively music depicting the Goan identity,
culture, language and traditions by Goans of different ages from 6 to 74.

President of Goan Welfare Association Simon D’Silva welcomed the guests,
members, fellow goans and members of the Konkani speaking community. He
said, it is a very auspicious day and a great honour to have Eric Ozario,
co-founder of Mandd Sohbann and Kalaangann who is a born singer, composer
and full time cultural activist as the chief guest. He said that the World
Goa Day is being celebrated in solidarity on 20th August to commemorate
inclusion of Konkani language in the eight schedule of the Indian
constitution. But some will schedule their observance of the international
event on a date best suited to their communities. D’Silva, introduced Derick
D’Souza a prominent goan from Para who was born in Kenya and settled in
Siolim Goa, as a guest of honour who is working in Qatar since 1979.

Konkannis should work together while inviting artists and troupes from Goa
and also consider enacting dramas and Konkani plays by engaging talented
individuals from local community in Qatar, this will enhance the local
talent and promote Konkani, said Fr. Anand Castelino, assistant parish
priest of our lady of the rosary church Qatar who presided over the
function.

I remember the yesteryear films Amchem Noxib, Nirmon and their plot and
songs, these resemble konkanni beauty. Speak and read konkanni and keep
the ekvott. We shall do local dramas, nattoks and other cultural Konkani
programs and seek support from Fr. Anand Castelino for venues like hall,
pleaded Eddie Sequeira, Editor of Ekvott Magazine, Konkani Speaking
community Qatar who was invited as a special guest.

The inclusion of Konkanni language in the eight schedule of the Indian
Constitution on 20th August 1992 and celebration of World Goa Day brings all
goan expatriates together in various countries and show the togetherness,
culture and tradition. We must continue to speak konkanni and teach our
children, that there is no age bar to learn any language and once learnt you
will always remember it, said Derick D’Souza who was the guest of honour for
the function.

Chief guest Eric Ozario said, Konkans are a community of 50 lakhs konkani
speakers. Out of the 4000 odd Indian languages, Konkani is the 18th
language included in the eight schedule of the Indian constitution at that
time and now there are 21 official languages. Konkani has been introduced
as a third language in Karnataka Schools. Is there any place for Konkanni
in our Hearts? or in our Homes? Have we given Konkanni to our children –
which was given to us by our forefathers? Have we carried on with the
legacy? Is it good to continue with the legacy? questioned Eric Ozario. He
also briefed the gathering on the upcoming First World Konkanni Cultural
Convention to be held at Mandd Sobhann, Mangalore from 25th November to 19th
December 2010 and sought support and invited all for the convention. He
said Keralites call themselves Malayalis, People from Tamil Nadu call
themselves Tamils, let us all people from the Konkan regions of Maharashtra,
Goa and Karnataka call ourselves as Konkans. Ozario complimented Goan
Welfare Association for the marvelous and colourful cultural evening being
presented, depicting the language and true goan culture in a distant miles
away.

The celebration was followed by launching of two books; “Into the Diaspora
Wilderness by Selma Carvalho at the hands of Fr. Anand Castelino and
“Konknni Cholchitram” by Isidoro Dantas was unveiled by Eric Ozario. Both
the books are now available with the GWA committee members for the general
public.

The event has highlighted the importance of sustaining the legacy of the
Konkani language and the Goan heritage for the future generations. Six

Goan language and culture to depict World Goa Day 2010 celebration in Qatar

The Goan Welfare Association (GWA), Qatar is in full swing in their
preparation for the World Goa Day 2010 celebration to be held on 30th
September 2010 from 9 pm onwards at the Rayyan Gardens.

A colourful cultural programme will be staged to mark the celebration
followed by launching of two Konkani books named Konknni Cholchitram, a
book on Konkani films history starting from 1950 (Mogacho Anvddo) to 2009
(Mogachi Zor) by Isidoro Dantas and a Book by Selma Carvalho Into The
Diaspora Wilderness. These two books are recently launched in Goa. Goans in
Qatar can obtain a copy of it through GWA members after it's launch.

Goans based in different countries celebrate World Goa Day in Solidarity on
20th August to commemorate inclusion of Konkani in the eighty schedule of
the Indian constitution. But some will schedule their observance of the
international event on a date best suited to their communities. On GOA DAY,
Goans will remind themselves of the need to work to preserve their culture,
music, history, language, cuisine, and art for their children, the non-Goan
community and for posterity.

It is a wonderful movement that have started and the Goans who are working
at various levels and in various fields connected with the nurturing of the
Goan identity and development of the Konkani language are overjoyed about
the success of this movement. On GOA DAY, Goans remember 1992, when the two
Houses of the Indian Parliament unanimously voted and approved an amendment
to include our mother tongue Konkani in the eight schedule of the
Constitution of India, thus according it national status. It is also a day
where Goans world-wide join in SOLIDARITY to celebrate being a GOAN, said
Simon D'Silva, president of the association.

Last year on World Goa Day occasion, an easy-to-learn Konkani language
familiarization book written by Mathew Almeida and published by Thomas
Stephens Konknni Kendr was unveiled at the hands of Brazilian Ambassador to
Qatar HE Anuar Nahes and around twenty five copies were obtained by the
community members through Goan Welfare Association. GWA has enough study
material for those trying to learn Konkani or improve upon their language
skills. Goan Welfare Association urge community members to teach their
children Konkani language. Teaching and imparting training in Konkani
language may not help our children to get jobs, but it will not make us
poor, but will enrich our future generations with a treasure trove of our
language, added D'Silva.

Having achieved unprecedented success in previous years, GWA invites it's
members and Goan community to an evening filled with fun, music, cultural
programme, games and attractive prizes. More details can be had by phoning
0491 / 66828980.

GWA continues Goan Overseas Association's (GOA's) concept of organizing
World Goa Day since 2003 even after it's merger with GWA and also Annual May
Queen Ball from 2001. The Eleventh Annual May Queen Ball 2011 will be held
on 5th May 2011. More upcoming events and community welfare activities will
be announced shortly.

[Goanet] Goan Welfare Association, Qatar donates Rs. 3.38 Lakhs to Caritas Goa.

2009-10-01 Thread Simon D'Silva

Goan Welfare Association (GWA) Qatar donate Rs. 3.38 Lakhs towards Care Home
for
AIDS/HIV patients in Tivim

Fr. Valerian Vaz, Director of Caritas Goa receiving a cheque from Martin
Mascarenhas, Vice-president of Goan Welfare Association, Doha - Qatar.
Construction
work of the Care Home for AIDS/HIV patients in Tivim village, North Goa which
is in
progress can be seen in the picture.

Goan Welfare Association (GWA) Qatar handed over a cheque of Rs. 3.38 lakhs to
Caritas Goa, a Catholic charitable organization established in 1962, which has
been
involved in a number of relief work in Goa.

The cheque was handed over to Father (Fr.) Valerian Vaz, Director of Caritas
Goa by
Martin Mascarenhas, Vice-president of GWA.

The donation will go towards the construction work of the Care Home for
AIDS/HIV
patients in Tivim village in North Goa. The centre for AIDS is home to a number
of
resident patients, while many who have been infected with the virus frequent
the
centre for solace and treatment.

GWA Qatar functioning under the dynamic leadership of President Simon D'Silva
have
been consistently doling out funds for relief work to different organizations
in
India.

Since 2001, D'Silva and like-minded Goans based in Qatar have pitched in to
support
organizations involved in relief work for the cause of the down trodden and
neglected sections of society in India.

Contributions to the Gujarat Earthquake Victims through Prime Minister's Relief
Fund, Child Relief and You (CRY), a national level social-charitable body
involved
in the welfare of orphan children have been the twin organizations where the
Goans
have pitched in over the last few years.

Back in Goa, GWA have for the last two years have supported social work carried
out
by Lar de St. Terezinha Orphanage home at Margao and also helped the institute
in
Cavelosim village functioning under Caritas which is sheltering orphan children
suffering from HIV.

Fr. Valerian lauded the role played by GWA towards helping poor, needy and
specially
the less fortunate.

I am grateful for your special interest in the projects of Caritas-Goa since
the
time you have been the President of Goan Welfare Association, Doha Qatar. I
appreciate the continued generosity and support of the Goan Welfare Association
towards our projects, I really appreciate your kind gesture to join hands with
Caritas-Goa in our outreach programme to Children with HIV/AIDS, Fr. Valerian
wrote
in a letter addressed to the President of Goan Welfare Association, Doha Qatar.

Empowerment of both individual and communities had been the motto of Caritas,
besides helping the individual to stand on its own. Not only relief work but
empowerment of both individual and communities is the focus of attention of
Caritas.
The concern is to deal with people as human beings with dignity, help them run
their
own lives, guide them to live in communion with each other and in harmony with
nature, and build this awareness within communities, said Fr. Valerian after
receiving the cheque from Martin Mascarenhas, Vice President of GWA.

The numerous projects run by Caritas in Goa include Prison Apostolate, were
apart
from teaching the illiterate prisoners to read and write, some of them are even
taught different trades. All the centres run by the Caritas cater to all types
of
people irrespective of religion, caste or creed and are not limited to the
people of
Goa.

Besides, relief work Caritas projects of philanthropic nature include

- the Obra de Proteccao a Mulher - a centre for Service for Protection of Women
in
Nachionala, established in 1942. Prosthetic and Orthotic centre, located in Old
Goa
which manufactures and provides artificial limbs and other aids like crutches,
calipers etc.

Other charitable and social welfare programmes run by Caritas in Goa extend
from
running the St. Xavier's Academy for handicapped boys and girls in Old Goa
which
conducts the government recognized training and production programme for the
handicapped children.

The academy meets the needs of differently-disabled children and is a
recognized

learning -disabled children.

the ICBF function

AN INDIAN housewife who touched the lives of many over the past three
decades by leading a group of volunteers to dress up the dead at the
mortuary is leaving Qatar for good with fond memories.

Eugenia Dias, from the state of Goa, has not kept count of the bodies she
and her team have cleaned and dressed at Hamad Medical Corporation's morgue
since they started the charitable activity in 1977.

We have cared for the dead from all over the world, the publicity-shy Doha
resident of 37 years told Gulf Times in her first and last interview to
any media organisation, as she put it.

Eugenia landed in Qatar in 1971 to join her husband Diogo C Dias, two years
after their marriage. The incident that inspired her to embark on the unique
mission occurred in 1977 in Doha.

Three young Indians who went to play music at a wedding died in an
accident. All were in their early 20s, and one of them was our neighbour and
very good friend, she said while recalling the shock of seeing the bodies
lying in a pool of blood in the mortuary.

At that time there were two community members, Tony Fernandes and Agapito
Carvallo, who used to help in dressing the bodies, following in the
footsteps of a compatriot lady, Lydia D'Abreo.

I had seen them doing this and said I would help them to prepare the bodies
for sending home and ever since I have been volunteering, stated Eugenia,
the mother of three grown-up sons and a college-going daughter.

When Tony and Agapito left the country, Eugenia and her team of fellow
Indians Nerry Alphonso, Francis Gonsalves, K M Sebastian, Molly Polly, Effie
D'Souza and Merlin Abreo took over the task to clean and dress the bodies of
all non-Muslims dying in Qatar.

There is a separate set-up to do the same for the Muslim community.

It is either the mortuary attendants, relatives of the dead, companies or as
in some cases, the embassies concerned who contact Eugenia and her team for
their voluntary services.

Usually the family or the employer provides the clothes while the rest of
the materials to clean the bodies are supplied by the hospital.

In order to keep the bodies from decomposing till they reach the respective
destinations, the hospital staff helps to inject them with formalin.

There are cases in which some bodies are covered in dirt and blood and
disfigured, especially as a result of accidents.

We make sure that the bodies are very clean because when the family members
back home open the coffin they would have some consolation to see that their
loved one looks neat for the final journey, Eugenia said.

Though the social worker was never in the limelight and always kept a low
profile, a couple of honours came her way, a Papal medal from the late Pope
John Paul II in 1992 and an appreciation award from the Indian Community
Benevolent Fund (ICBF).

I was selected for the Papal medal following a reference from the former
Parish priest of the Catholic Church in Qatar, Fr John Vanderlin, along with
Rocky Fernandes (another long-time Doha resident), she recalled.

Asked why she was leaving Qatar for good, Eugenia replied: It is high time
for me to go, I have stayed (here) for a long time.

She will join her daughter Tiziana who is studying in India.

Of her three sons, the eldest one Joseph and his family, and the youngest
Bashrie are Doha residents, whereas the second son Nezi and his family are
in Canada.

My team members have assured me that they will continue our work even after
my departure from Qatar, Eugenia stated.

The social worker pointed out that she would not have been able to undertake
her mission but for the wholehearted support of her family.

Diogo and our children have never complained, even when I had to buy food
from outside because of my schedule, she gratefully recalled.

Diogo said he had always been happy with his wife's voluntary activities and
encouraged her. We are proud of her, was how Bashrie summed up his
sentiments for his mother.

Fr John always used to say he would not thank me, but Diogo instead,
because without his support I would not be able to accomplish what I was
doing, Eugenia said.

I was very happy in Doha, I will always keep the memories of my life here,
and I really thank all the people who loved me and will keep them in my
prayers, she added.

The social worker was honoured by the ICBF at a meeting at Birla Public
School on Friday. ICBF president Dr Mohan Thomas reminisced that he had the
opportunity to work with the team many times.

Eugenia reconstructs the mutilated body of the people from road accidents
looking at their old photographs, with the skills and precision of a plastic
surgeon, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Eugenia hoped she and her team

DOHA'S Goan community has made a strong plea for direct flights to the
southwestern Indian state of Goa.

The appeal was made at a meeting hosted by the Goan Welfare Association in
honour of the NRI delegation from Goa, headed by Commissioner for NRI
Affairs, government of Goa, and former Indian federal minister Eduardo
Faleiro.

The proposal for direct flight to Goa was made by Simon D'Silva, president
of Goan Welfare Association, on behalf of the Goans living in Qatar.

Vice-Admiral (Retd.) John C D'Silva, chairman, Overseas Employment Agency of
Goa, Director of NRI affairs (Goa) Ulhas D Kamat and Bailancho Saad activist
Sabina Martins were among others who were honoured at the meeting held at
Shalimar Garden Hotel recently. All were part of the delegation led by
Faleiro.

Speaking at the meeting, Indian Ambassador George Joseph described the Goan
community as a trouble-free group, having hardly any complaints at the
embassy. He also requested the NRI Commissioner to help the NRI Goans on the
issues pertaining to property and education.

Replying to the envoy's speech, Faleiro highlighted the efforts that the NRI
commission in Goa had made for the Non-Resident Goans since its
establishment.

The former union minister also highlighted various NRI Issues, addressed
from time to time for the benefit of the NRI Goans. He urged the Goans to
voice their woes and proposals so that he could study them and try to reach
a solution.

Speaking later, Kamat recalled the Global Goans Covention held at the
beginning of the year in Goa and spoke about the initiatives made by the
state to tap the energies of its NRIs. The official also distributed a CD on
authentic Goan music entitled 'DAIZ.

Since the NRI commission's inception in Goa, it had made efforts to track
down all compatriots who were affected by the Gulf War and who returned from
Kuwait way back in 1991, said Kamat.

He said the commission was successful in locating more than 200 Goans whom
they later helped.

Efforts were also made to address the grievances of children of NRIs who
were facing monetary and physical problems to authenticate educational
certificates by the central government officials and then by the Ministry
for External Affairs.

The official also spoke about the work being carried out by the commission
on the issue of seats for NRIs in professional colleges. Kamat said that at
present, at the only medical college the state has, only one out of its 100
seats is reserved for children of NRIs.

The commission has already made a proposal to the state government to
increase the seats to 110, and the number of NRI seats to 10.

The official also requested the gathering to visit the commission's
website, www.globalgoans.org.in

John C D'Silva, chairman of the Overseas Employment Agency of Goa spoke
about the purpose of establishing the agency for the benefit of Goan Youth
who seek jobs abroad.

Sabina Martins spoke about the purpose of her visit to Qatar and explained
how her organisation worked for the protection of the rights of Goan women
worldwide. She highlighted the work the forum had undertaken for the
alleviation of the hardships faced by women due to various social causes.

Eduardo Faleiro presented a memento to Simon D'Silva, president of the
association, in appreciation of Goan Welfare Association's support to NRI
Commission's efforts.

Basil Coutinho, a prominent Goan who had left Qatar for good, attended the
meeting while on his short visit to Qatar.

Proposals were submitted by John D Sa on various problems faced by
Doha-based Goans while on vacation back home.

The meeting also made a forceful plea for the recognition of services of
social worker Eugenia Dias and that the state government to honour her with
a suitable award considering her services in the social field in Qatar for
the past 30 years.

The meeting also requested the NRI Commissioner to make it easy for those
Goans who wanted to secure Portuguese passports.

Mathew Estrocio compered the meeting and Hazel Rodrigues proposed a vote of
thanks.
