[Goanet] Goanet Commands deserve Roger Wilco
Hello Roland: You have disseminated a resounding echo of the Good Book's applicable edicts for the benefit of us Goan tellurians ensconced in Cyberspace's recesses at Goanet. Enshrined in your sagacious Decalogue is an overwhelming epistle. I feel awfully embarrassed as utterly unworthy to be commingled with this almost Scriptural message. I'm no bard by any stretch of the imagination. Were you to grant me the meagre status of an inchoate poetaster playing the struggling jester at Goanet's court, it would be flattering. Your enunciation of the tenets of good, wholesome fellowship at Goanet is most timely and appropriate. And it is not I but you who are among the few real Apostles of the sanguine caliber of Fred and Bosco carrying on the arduous campaign for good communications, righteousness and decency in the portals of this Goan nook of Cyberspace. In relation to its members and the outside world, your definition of the scope of Goanet has perspicuously envisaged an unalienable forum as refined and farreaching as the Founders and Moderators could ever contemplate. To be properly absorbed by Goanet's membership, it will need much rumination and introspection with open and keen minds and resolute hearts. Assuming the simulated mantle of Moses, you've didactically brought down to Goanetters the allegoricalTablets conveying Enlightenment, Goodwill and Peace to overhaul and invigorate Goanet's exchange. As you descend from the Commanding Hills of Utopian aspirations, I hope you succeed in your noble mission to create a harmonious tessellation of interrelationships within this internet community . May you and your ilk never have to dash these Tablets, conceived in metaphor, on the Rock of Frustration and Disappointment. Motivated by noblesse oblige, you've delivered a convincing, piece-de-resistance. I hope the Goanet faithful take heed deeply and are positively influenced by its power. My learned friend, in producing this wonderful prose blending wisdom, pacifism and elegance with magnificent panache, you have greatly exceeded what Goanet could ever expect from a subscriber. Indeed a catharsis- driven Messenger you truly are for the Survival, nay Glory, of Goanet. [Goanet] Mario Should Have Been A Hockey Goalie and Saved All Goanetters a Lot of Grief !
Hi Mario, I read with interest your two posts today: On Tuesday Nov 14, 2006 Mario Goveia wrote: I believe one of my cousins, Vincent Fernandes, was also a hockey goalie for St. Stanislaus and again on Tuesday Nov 14, 2006 Mario Goveia wrote: I think they only put what we called the muscle-heads in goal. Do you mean your brilliantly successful entrepreneur cousin Vincent Fernandes in Houston, who is a graduate of Bombay University is a muscle head ? what kind of badmouthing of a cousin and hockey goalkeepers is that ? I know your equally successful hockey-playing cousins Mark and Steven Fernandes are engineering gradiuates of IIT Kharagpur - like me, a hockey goalkeeper - and BITS Pilani respectively. Apparently this and all the grief you give to Goanetters is the result of all the concussions (macro and micro) that you got playing soccer for school and college in Jabalpur - withall the headings, etc. ! You should have played hockey goalkeeper instead - that way you could have even played top level hockey (not just university level), got into IIT and gone all the way to get a doctorate ! Re: [Goanet] Bleeding labour dry /Re to Mario
Hi Mario, Thanks for the concern, but don't blow it out of proportion as my aunt might be reading this! I only mentioned slightly high. There is a history of high BP in my family (paternal side) but I have always had a healthy BP of 120/80, and I generally am a very calm person unlike my father. Imagine my shock when I saw my physician raise his eyebrows after checking my pressure during a routine checkup, and informing me that it was 135/90. He told me to relax as it was still boderline healthy and it was probably only stress related, but to get at least 6 to 7 hrs of proper sleep. Nevertheless, I have decided to keep it in mind and be more cautious, especially with regards to stress and sleep. Cheers, Aristo. Re: [Goanet] Bleeding labour dry/response to Selma
Dear Selma, I don't know whether your chronic misunderstandings of my posts are genuine or on purpose, but now I am forced to waste precious bandwidth to clarify what I have written... Selma wrote: In your earlier post you told me that I have a bird's eye view of everything presumably in India, and that no one is derided on account of leaving at 6pm. I did not respond to your post because I didn't want to shatter your youthful impressions of world. There is time enough, when life will do that for you. Aristo responds: Note that all the employees in my company are not as youthful as me, but I still see 40 year olds running like juveniles to catch the 6 o' clock Bus everyday. Oh, and my bird's eye statement was a lighthearted potshot intended to ruffle your feathers! Selma wrote: However, now that Sunith agrees with me (mind you in part only, he didn't forget to emphasis that), suddenly you tell us that you've been suffering from BP, that 2 out of 4 bosses exploited you and you put in 12 hour work-days. Aristo clarifies: Selma, there is nothing inconsistent between my post to Vivian and that to Sunith. I have only expanded what I claimed earlier. I acknowledged that I had been exploited in both posts, and that I stood up to it with no negative fallout. If you re-read the summary paragraph to my response to Sunith, you may just understand. We allow ourselves to be exploited, especially if there are HR policies in place in your favour. To explain for the 3rd time about my 12 hr Work- 12 hr Play policy (Goanetters, forgive me), the Work part INCLUDES the TRAVEL time between home and office, that is, say if I step out of my house at 8am, I have to step in to my house at 8pm, so that I can have some Hygiene time of 0.5 hrs, dinner time of 1 hr and family/personal time of 2.5 hours, followed by 7 hrs of required sleep. If my travel to office and back takes a total of 1 hr, I am WILLING to work 11 hrs with 3 breaks. But since it takes me 3 hrs, I work a 9 to 6. Period. Selma wrote: The good part of this exploitation was that it was a female boss and that you thoroughly enjoyed being exploited by her, so all is not lost. Aristo clarifies: Selma, I sense that you are implying that my female boss used her sexuality to exploit her team. In no way did I give that impression. How coloured is your vision? I specifically stated : QUOTE one of which I willingly allowed myself to be exploited by, as she was an amazing Boss, simply because she had the art of getting all her subordinates to be willingly exploited through her motivational speeches! UNQUOTE Note that the words motivational speeches are not in quotes, so no double meaning was intended. To clarify, my female Boss did NOT use her sexuality (there wasn't any to use!), but used her art of people management to make us work as a team to achieve the unreasonable targets set by the German client. She was my first Boss, and I have to say that I learnt a lot about people skills from her, which I have not seen in my bosses since then: Delegation, trust, motivation, encouragement when we did well, and stern warnings when complacency got the better of us. She looked out for our personal grievances and never made us feel like mere resources. She even gave me the opportunity to head a team of 4 at such an infant stage of my career, from which I learned a lot about dealing with ego's. In return, we blindy allowed ourselves to be exploited to work unreasonably long hrs. Selma wrote: Knee-jerk reactions to what I write are not a good way to enhance debate on Goanet. Aristo clarifies: I entered the thread only after Vivian's post. I had no intention to do so before that. My knee-jerk reaction was to my buzz words trickle down effect that Vivian mentioned. I have no wish to contradict for the sake of contradicting, but do take pleasure in taking lighthearted potshots and see the person get so affected! Anyway, to do you justice, I brought up this topic with my HR professor during evening college yesterday, and he informed me that the Labour laws in India regarding working hours do not apply for white collar jobs/IT industry. So there is an opportunity for companies to take advantage of this, however, larger companies have a responsibility and integrity to uphold, and do not do so, BY POLICY, and are by and large, PEOPLE FRIENDLY. Cheers! Aristo. ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org
[Goanet] re; Goans and East Indians of Bandra.
Mario says: I KNOW from my own friends and experiences that East Indians are indistinguishable from Goan and Mangalorean Catholics. -- I beg to differ. All three communities have distinguishable traits and characteristics. I did a piece on Bombay's Christians in the mid-70s for the Sunday edition of Free Press Journal for Christmas. I talked to many people in the three communities and members from each community specifically mentioned that they are separate in their own little ways. The Marathi East Indians speak is always different from the Marathi the Hindu Maharashtrians speak. For another assignment for Free Press Journal, I visited some areas in the Chembur-Trombay area. I travelled the Rice route, the name given because of the rice available in the black market during the ration cards (though they are still in use, I believe) days. I have always visited the predominantly East Indian villages from Bandra to Vihar and talked to lot of people. The East Indians food habits vary from Goans and Mangaloreans. Their modes of dressing differ from Goans and Mangaloreans. They are proud of their own heritage, customs, traditions and legacy. [Goanet] Agnelo: An Indigenous Goan Saint (By Fr Desmond de Sousa CSsR, SAR NEWS)
Agnelo: An Indigenous Goan Saint By Fr Desmond de Sousa CSsR, SAR NEWS PANAJI, Goa (SAR NEWS) -- Venerable Father Agnelo D'Souza spent his entire fifty-eight years of life in the Goa region. His 79th death anniversary celebration November 20 is an occasion to reflect on secret of his sanctity. He lived his ordinary everyday life in an extraordinary way. Agnelo was born to a very pious Catholic couple, Minguel Mariano D'Souza and Maria Perpetua, January 24, 1869, in the village of Anjuna, north Goa. The ancestral house still stands, with his relatives living in it. Anjuna parish is cared for by priests of the Missionary Society of St Francis Xavier (SFX), an indigenous Goan religious society based at the village of Pilar in central Goa, of which Father Agnelo was a member. Even as a child he displayed extraordinary love for his neighbour. His sister relates how Agnelo, unlike his other siblings, was always at the disposal of his saintly mother. He gladly did whatever domestic work she required. He was extremely helpful to his neighbours, so parents in the village pointed out Agnelo's example to their children for imitation. As a young adult, his piety was so transparent that his parish priest appointed him to teach catechism to the other village boys. Agnelo performed this service with great joy and care. He joined the SFX at Pilar July17,1897, at the age of 28. He was ordained a priest a year later on September 24 and appointed pastor of Shiroda and then Sanvordem in Goa and later of Kumta in the present diocese of Karwar. He was a model of humility and kindness as priest, administrator, preacher and confessor. There is a story that during his tenure in Kumta some drunkards demanded money from the parish funds. Though very meticulous about parish accounts, Father Agnelo obliged them and won them over, so that they gave up their habit of drinking! Father Agnelo was in great demand as a preacher and confessor. Many parish priests used to request his superior at Pilar to send him to preach missions in their parishes. He was promptly obedient to the directives of his superior, even when, on more than one occasion, he was ill and feeling feverish. Many moving stories circulate of his extraordinary ability to touch and transform the lives of people. One Dr. Leon Pinto of Calangute village testified that he was suffering from a nagging problem that deeply disturbed him. Father Agnelo happened to come by, looked at him tenderly and blessed him. The man instantly felt comforted and peace returned to him. Valente Fernandes narrated how after pouring out his heart to Father Agnelo in the confessional, like so many others, he experienced immense peace and a firm will to avoid sin in the future. Many others recounted the extraordinary healing powers of Father Agnelo. One interesting story is related by Francis Fernandes, a tailor from the Goa Velha, a village adjoining Pilar. He once planted chillies in his kitchen garden, toiled hard watering and manuring them, but they refused to grow. Innocently, he uprooted one of these plants and took it to Father Agnelo. The priest pulled out a branch and returned the sampling with the advice, Go and plant it again. It will certainly produce chillies. Within three weeks he got such an abundant crop of chillies that it amazed even the people in the village. The news of his sanctity reached the then Patriarch of Goa Dom Matheus de Olivera Xavier, who appointed Agnelo spiritual director of the Patriarchal Seminary of Rachol in south Goa May 20,1918. He remained there till his death on November 20, 1927. At Rachol seminary, both professors and seminarians referred to him as a model priest: humble, ascetic, saintly. He was lovingly called 'our saint'. Father Aloysius Rego, in his book Secrets to Share, mentions that Agnelo used to sleep without a mattress on his bed, would put ashes in his food and meticulously prayed his breviary every day. Sometimes, if he was inattentive at prayer, he would repeat that particular 'hour'. Venerable Agnelo D'Souza was truly a man of God and compassionate towards human beings. His intelligence, his ability to preach and to give guidance to others was outstanding and greatly appreciated by people. The special novena on the theme Fr Agnelo: A Model of Christian Witness is being celebrated from November 11 to 20, at the Church of the SFX in Pilar, where his mortal remains are venerated. -- FN 9822122436 +91-832-240-9490 (phone calls after 1 pm please) ___ Goanet mailing list Goanet@lists.goanet.org http://lists.goanet.org/listinfo.cgi/goanet-goanet.org

It was also reported in NT/H/GT that the accused had another plan on their list to kidnap another youth (from St. Xavier College Mapusa) coming from a well-to-do-family. The plan was dropped as the youths parents had filed for a divorce in the court and as a result their bank accounts were frozen. The student leaders alleged that the pricipla was involved in a similar incident two year back. Around fifty locals stormed Benaulim Panchayat to question the Sarpanch as to why Panchayat has decided to stop granting licences to Lamanis and Kashmiris. It may be reminded that the panchayat passed the resolution to stop them as they cause nuisance to the tourists and due to their involvement in drugs trafficking. It seems we are only interested in the money income which Kashmiris or Lamani generate to the locals but not the consequenses. Else where in Goa, at Arambol, one 30 years old Russian found dead in a tourist hut. The death was due to an overdose of drugs. Who brings this drugs to Goa ? * Happy feast to all Navelkars on the net (including Gabe). He declared that BJP would wipe out unemployment from the state within 2 years if voted to power in the forthcoming assembly elections. We have worked the modalities to that effect, calculations have been done and we will see to it that nobody remains unemployed, says Parrikar. Can Congress or any other parties match this BJP claim ? Unemployment bringing to Zero practically impossible. e.g There are some youths desperately waiting for their Portuguese Passport to go to England etc and until such time they would prefer remain unemployed. * Mormugao MLA birthday Tomorrow 15.11.06. No, I would not call anyone in India kalia, which in America would be equivalent to calling a black a nigger. However I would refer to African-Americans whom I work with almost every day blacks without any qualms, because they would prefer me to. [Goanet] BTGIG: JJ Rodriguez ... dance instructor in Mumbai.
Bet this guy is Goan (BTGIG) .. maybe I'm wrong: AND I DISCOVERED to my surprise that it was possible to earn more money from teaching how to dance than from keeping accounting ledgers. Evergreen dance instructor J J RODRIGUEZ, who is virtually an institution in the city, said this about his love affair with dance. Joao Joaquim Rodriguez, or simply JJ is credited with starting Mumbai's best-known and probably oldest Western dance school. A legend in his own right, JJ strongly feels that classical music is still around and people prefer the golden oldies despite the transformation of music and dance tastes over the years. His love affair with dance began when he won th eRumba Championships in 1951 at Mumbai's famous Metro cinema. That was the turning point in my life and career, he admits. While working in the accounts department of the Briths Institute of Engineering Technology, it dawned on him that it would certainly be more profitable to teach dance. Interestingly, he admits that he picked up the art of dancing from books, without any practical training! Initially, he only taught on weekends on a terrace behind Rhythm House, but as his students increased, he had to shift to Colaba to his own home where he has been for over 40 years now. Today, even though he's almost eighty, JJ still teaches dance from 9.30 am till 1 pm and from 4.30 pm till 8.30 pm. His moment of glory came when he was asked to teach the Viennese waltz to actors Jason Scott Lee and Lena Hardy for the Hollywood film *Jungle Book*. It was a truly wonderful experience and it showed the world that we Indians are as good at ballroom dancing as anyone else. P 272-273 From The Mumbai Factfile, by Derek O'Brien. [Goanet] Vatican steps into veil debate
http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/EB7ED09D-3527-4E8E-BEFE-3D1AB707EE22.htm Vatican steps into veil debate Martino said 'guests' from a different culture must respect the traditions ... of the countries they go to The Vatican has stepped into the debate about Muslim women wearing veils, with a cardinal saying 'guests' must follow the laws of their host countries, including any bans on such face-coverings. Cardinal Renato Martino, a former Vatican envoy to the UN, heads the papal office on issues concerning migrants, itinerant workers and refugees. Martino was speaking at a news conference to present Pope Benedict XVI's annual message on migrant issues. He said countries: Must require that guests who arrive from a different culture must respect the traditions, the symbols, the culture, the religion of the countries they go to. Vatican Radio reiterated the stance, saying that the question of the veil for Islamic women should be considered in the context of respect for the laws of the countries which welcome them. Cultural traditions Martino's comments come two weeks before the pope begins a visit to Turkey. Although a secular state, Turkey has long wrestled over whether Muslim women should wear Islamic headscarves in such places as universities and public offices, where the article of clothing has been banned for many years. Flanking the cardinal, Agostino Marchetto, another Vatican official who deals with immigration issues, referred to Italy's law requiring people to keep their faces visible in public. The law dates to Italy's crackdown on domestic terrorism several decades ago. Marchetto said Italy rightly has such a law and that obeying it is part of accepting the law of this country. Marchetto said: Dialogue is needed with our brothers to make them understand the consequences of some of their desires, such as their own cultural and religious traditions, would not be positive in the society they are now in. Martino also pushed the Vatican's campaign for Christians' right to worship around the world. He lamented that some countries do not allow immigrants from Christian countries to profess their faith easily. Re: [Goanet] Goa Sudharop: World G.O.A.N. network - Xmas Party in Toronto
George Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Care packages: Melinda Powell (Goa) sourced different items from wholesalers, along with her husband (David) and daughters. Together they packed 250 individual bags to distribute to old age homes in Goa. Their home looked like a supermarket with cartons and cartons of stuff. Each bag contained a face towel, 1 packet of Marie biscuits, 1 packet of coconut biscuits, 1 Talcum powder, and a 200 gm packet of Nestle milk powder, 1 bottle of Jam. They repacked the parcels in cartons, numbered them and then distributed them. Valerie Rodrigues, Ibonio D'Souza, Melinda David Powell were involved with the distribution. They also distributed some toast and buns to the seniors. George, I can almost see the seniors eyes/smiles when they opened their packages. Thanks for all the hard work in organizing and coordinating the effort of Goans around the world. The result you describe makes me want to see what else we can do to help raise funds here in Toronto. As such, I am sending out an invitation to all interested Goanetters, yes that includes Mario too, to come over to my place for a fund raising Christmas/Carol singing party on Friday the 15th of December. All those who are interested in attending, please send me an email. The date is not carved in stone, I can change it to accommodate the most people. I will be collecting donations prior to the party too. I am also collecting tips on how to raise funds. Those who cannot attend but would want to donate anyway, please also send me an email.
