At last, the renovation work begins- The city’s Garden (Garcia-Da-Orta). This garden was in the news since 2004 was up for renovation since then. I remember reading that funds for the renovations were allocated.. What happened to the funds or why such a long delay, only God knows? Only the city MLA and the then CM of Goa, porrikar will will be able to clarify on this or throw some more lights. I am copying to him too, just incase he decides to write back. dr. willy, the then Tourism Ministers should also be able to guide. And off course, any tony, po, babush etc of CCP No, I will not copy then for they are illiterate in computer literacy i think. Some of them are Education Minster, City Mayors though. When ITians like porrikar never writes back can we really blame the illiterates? Finally, the work on the long neglected garden started now Nov.2009 Will cost about Rs. 2.5 crores First phase? Theoretically, there could be a lot of 'middlemen' along the way (including non-priests) who could have facilitated a deal. [Goanet] Love For Goa And Konkanni Is Synonymous
Love For Goa And Konkanni Is Synonymous Mother Tongue is supposed to be the language of the natives, which most often than not, is one factor that binds the locals together, it is so embalmed in their culture, that it gives them a distinct Identity, it also becomes a medium used to express or communicate among the locals and it is also a medium that all the locals adept to very easily, universally this is supposed to be true but not in the case of Goans. Goans say that their Mother Tongue is Konkanni, but for some unknown reasons, Goans in Mumbai prefer to speak in Marathi, Hindi or English but not in Konkani, the Goan Diaspora spread all over the world, proudly speak in English, most of them don't even acknowledge that Konkanni is their Mother Tongue, worse still are the educated Goans in Goa, who prefer to speak in English rather than in Konkanni, what are we trying to prove ? What are we trying to show ? We say we are Goans and we love Konkanni but when it come to proving it, we fall way short in our commitment towards Konkanni. We all say we love Goa and we love Konkanni, but when it comes to giving Konkanni it's due place, we fail to deliver. We have become victims of our own insecure ideology, where we think speaking English puts us on higher strata of society. The Goan Diaspora community is the only community that that does not project it's Mother Tongue Konkanni, be it in our family gathering, community gathering or even Goan conventions, Konkanni is seldom used as the means of communication. We like to show off our acquired skills in a language that had ruled, most part of India for more than 400 years, there is no doubt that English is an international language and comparatively, we Goans can match anyone on the globe in English, that does not mean we should neglect our Mother Tongue and treat it disgracefully. It is so good to see the Mangalorean Community never falling short in their commitment towards Konkanni, so why should we Goans be any less committed to the cause of Konkanni ? At present, Goans in Goa and the Goan Diaspora spread all over the world, say we love Goa and Konkanni and would protect both by whatever means, but unfortunately, fail to show it by our deeds. If Konkanni is loosing it's hold in Goan families, it is the elders of the family, that are to be blamed, it is the elders in the family who have to show their love for Konkanni and have to make sure that our children learn and love our Mother Tongue. Our Children in the Gulf and rest of the world, hardly speak a word of Konkanni nor do they understand it, if we don't teach our children Konkanni and our culture, who will carry forward our Identity and our culture ? We try to give our children the best in everything, so why not Konkanni ? It's so pathetic when the younger generation are made to utter a few sentences in Konkanni during a function, which do not sound anything like Konkanni, why do we have add insult to injury or rub salt and vinegar, to the already open wounds of Mother Konkanni ? Why may I ask, why ? It does stretch the limits of credulity. Once, there was a time when, I myself was a victim of my own thinking, showing off my accented English in public and look for reactions, even if people spoke to me in Konkanni, I would reply in English, but soon I was made to realize that I was not only ungrateful and not being fair to my Mother Tongue but was also insulting my Mother Tongue, whom I should be honouring instead, it was then that I took a vow to speak Konkanni and uphold the cause of Konkanni, irrespective of the what others did around me. The very idea of reading and writing Konkanni was repulsive and never cared a damn about it, but today I can proudly say that I can read very well and write reasonably too and I am still learning. I am sure that if I have done it, so can every Goan too. If you really love Goa and our culture, speak in Konkanni and spread the Goan flavour and the essence of Konkanni all around you, if not, there is nothing we can do about it, but for God's sake stop calling yourself a GOAN Freddy Agnelo Fernandes The content of this electronic communication is intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom it is addressed and any others who are specifically authorized to receive it. Re: [Goanet] Let us pray
Couldn't hypnotism also be considered a pseudo-science in its early days: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnotism#History This description from those times sounds very bizarre now: In as much as patients can throw themselves into the nervous sleep, and manifest all the usual phenomena of Mesmerism, through their own unaided efforts, as I have so repeatedly proved by causing them to maintain a steady fixed gaze at any point, concentrating their whole mental energies on the idea of the object looked at; or that the same may arise by the patient looking at the point of his own finger, or as the Magi of Persia and Yogi of India have practised for the last 2,400 years, for religious purposes, throwing themselves into their ecstatic trances by each maintaining a steady fixed gaze at the tip of his own nose; it is obvious that there is no need for an exoteric influence to produce the phenomena of Mesmerism. […] The great object in all these processes is to induce a habit of abstraction or concentration of attention, in which the subject is entirely absorbed with one idea, or train of ideas, whilst he is unconscious of, or indifferently conscious to, every other object, purpose, or action. (ibid) Strangely, mostly references to hypnotism, like the one above, have little or no reference to Abbe Faria, and its history begins many decades after the Abbe's times. Interesting! Cyclone effect: Trawlers missing off Goa coast The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has launched a search operation after several Goa-based fishing trawlers went missing as the Arabian Sea turned rough under the influence of Cyclone Phyan, officials said on Wednesday. Our patrol vessels are already on the lookout for the trawlers. We have also pressed a lookout aircraft into the operation, which will scan the sea off Goa in search of the missing trawlers, Commandant N Saxena of the ICG base in Goa said. He did not give the exact number of trawlers missing, but unconfirmed reports peg the number at 30. Coastal areas of Goa are no longer endangered by the cyclone, the state meteorology department said, adding that Cyclone Phyan was heading in the direction of Gujarat. http://www.hindustantimes.com/goa/Cyclone-effect-Trawlers-missing-off-Go a-coast/475124/H1-Article1-475240.aspx ~(^^)~ Avelino

Are remittances of expats to be seen as something unquestionably positive, negative or a mixed blessing? Given that the extra money pouring into Goa leads to conspicuous consumption, a disinclination to earn one's own livelihood, fuells real-estate boom, contributes to inflation and making Goa one of the costliest non-metros (and even compared to the metros!) in India, and acts as a magnet for in-migration which we all lambast, isn't it time that we reassessed this issue? Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2009 22:08:08 +0530 From: Tony de Sa tonyde...@gmail.com To further elaborate on his term 'human pollution' he cited the fact that building is going on at a very fast pace and that these new flats/ bungalows/ dwellings are mostly being bought by non-Goans. Soon these people would integrate into the ethnic Goans and not only would there be intermarriage and therefore a change in the ethnicity of the Goans, but that life styles would be influenced by the nature of the people migrating into Goa. For example, if the migrants were aggressive (characteristic of some states in India) this aggressiveness would soon permeate and the gentle Goan nature would now be changed to an aggressive one. He cited the fact that instead of speaking the local language Konkani, more and more communication in the markets was taking place in Hindi. Mario asks: Gentle Goan nature? Was your friend smoking or drinking something illegal at the time?:-)) Haven't Goans emigrated in droves to other parts of the world? Tony wrote: My friend also pointed out the fact that Goa is also becoming a retirement home for westerners. In the opinion of some local people this is good because the westerners preserve old homes and maintain them and provide employment for the locals. My friend felt otherwise. He felt that these westerners raise the wages of local labour by over paying them and bring about a rise in prices of commodities like fish and the like. Mario observes: Your friend seems to be a Goan Scrooge, with no sympathy or generosity towards hardworking laborers and other service providers. Tell him wages and prices equalize demand and supply. Very often the term Non-Resident Goan is used to include just every Goan who does not reside in Goa and this can cause a lot of misunderstandings. Take for example the vast difference between the way the Global Goans Convention was organised in Toronto and in Muscat. Particularly the pre-Convention publicity. There are definitely two different types of Non-Resident Goans. We have to devise new terms to differentiate the two. Cheers! Cecil

I recall that many Brits were enthralled with Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth until a British High Court rubbished it and required a written warning be issued to any school kid who was shown the film, which shows that the average Brits were too easily impressed and unable to tell fact from fiction in a documentary. That is why we must vehemently defend our motherland from people who are invading it and taking and changing everything that is Goan. [Goanet] George W. Bush
Mario is a true conservative stooge and will do all in his power to defend President George W. Bush even to the extent of laying his unpopularity upon the Left Wing media. Why did not the Right wing media even try to correct your so called distortions by the left wing about Mr. Bush. Is it because all that the so called Left wing media published about Bush was absolutely true? Mario's response About Bush LIBERATING the Muslims from Tyranny What have they got in Exchange? Countries which are divided and ethnically split with one faction fighting another and carnage far above those attributable to Sadam or the Taliban besides the destruction and ruin of the whole infrastructure. Is this the type of LIBERATION Mario is talking about.? If so, then the Iraqis were better off under the Tyrant Sadam, and the Afghans were better off under the Taliban. The only good that has come is the emancipation of women. Mario tries to condone the invasion of Iraq by quoting UN Resolutions on the assumption that Sadam had WMD's which Sadam Denied and after the invasion, NO WDM's have been found. All available documents prove that Sadam had no ties to Al Qaeda yet Bush constantly referred to such ties. He had yet to prove this. It was only after the invasion of Iraq that Al Qaeda gained a footing in Iraq. Bush only invaded Iraq to show how powerful he was he did not care for the Iraqi people. He did not even have an exit strategy. That's how rational he was. I agree with Mario on one point, that is that Al Qaeda was the enemy of the world and has to be eliminated including Osama Bin Laden and that was the Goal. But this could have been achieved by other means. After all the Americans are known to have had covert activities through the CIA and I am convinced the Taliban or some factions within it could be coerced into falling in with the Americans in order to achieve this. As it is, is the loss of so many American lives truly worth the results so far? We are seeing that Osama is still at large, there is on peace in the region, and years after, there is no resolution to either conflict. There is even talk that the Americans could be prepared to NEGOTIATE with the Taliban or some factions of it as part of their Exit Strategy which, by the way, Bush did not have. Everyone knows that the Bush Tax Cuts benefitted the Rich enormously and the crumbs were tossed to the middle and lower classes. This did not help in any way as the rich only pocketed the windfall and did nothing to spend it to create jobs. This brings me to the Deficit. True the deficit under Bush was lower than it is now. Let us consider that Bush inherited a vibrant economy which he ran into the ground by enriching his Rich Counterparts with the Lions share of the Tax Cuts. Obama Inherited an economy which was already in recession and which Bush propped up by the TARP or the first part of it. OBAMA HAD NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE BUT TO SPEND HIS WAY OUT OF THE BUSH RECESSION this is why the deficit is higher.Unemployment is the result of Failed Bush economic policies and cannot be blamed on Obama. It began in the tail end of the Bush and era and continues but at a slower rate which signals a change in momentum. Employment, as seen through previous recessionary periods, always lags behind economic growth and don't forget, the cost of the two wars contributing to the deficit. Lastly, everyone knows that Clinton was the one who began the Cheap Drugs for Aids policy which Bush continued, come on Mario Don't Give Bush the entire credit by choosing one article from a Right wing news organization to defend your conclusion. Mario, let us not forget that Bush had Eight years to right the so called Clinton Wrongs and instead of doing this, he ruined the economy of the world.
[Goanet] Mario Miranda Honoured with 'Orden de Isabel La Catolica'
Mario Miranda Honoured with 'Orden de Isabel La Catolica' Written by NT Network Tuesday, 10 November 2009 00:04 King Ferdinand VII of Spain created the civil honour of 'Orden de Isabel La Catolica' in 1815 in honour of Queen Isabella to reward those who were held in high esteem by the Spanish. And it is indeed a moment of honour for Goa, as one of its illustrious sons, the veteran cartoonist, Mario Miranda has been bestowed with the honour, in recognition of his contribution towards strengthening ties between India and Spain. Flattered. That is the one word that sums the feelings of its recipient, who becomes the only Indian to have received this prestigious honour. Tell Mario that he is the only Indian to receive it and in his unassuming manner he says, I did not know about that. A globetrotting gene probably has been the force behind Mario's motley travels to foreign lands that has sometimes been an inspiration to his vivid depiction of life and culture. Long trips to Spain, Mario puts the number at 3 to 4, were sufficient for an alert mind such as his to learn in depth about the Spanish culture and life. The lack of knowledge about the Spanish language never proved a barrier. I know Portuguese, says Mario, explaining that the knowledge of Portuguese, which is quite close to Spanish, became a plus point. Habiba Miranda, Mario's wife informs that things took off from the time when a Spanish gentleman liked a mural painted by Mario displayed at the Ramada in Goa. He wanted to know more about the artist and his other works, she says. For now, the medal with the inscription 'A La Lealtad Acrisolada', which means 'To proven loyalty' is witness to the recognition of the artist's works, while the honour is for the entire nation and especially for all Goans. http://www.navhindtimes.in/buzz/4884-mario-miranda-honoured-with-orden-de-isabel-la-catolica

The second group of Goans are those residing in the UK, Canada and in theU.S. From Goa's economic point of view , the remittances to Goa from the first group areoverwhelmingly greater than remittances to Goa from the second group. - In my humble opinion Antonio has a very valid point ... ... FN Nascy responds: Dear Frederick; They could not have been 'Portuguese' as Portugal was a neutral country in the Second World War. Brazil never took part in this war, either; so these names peeople could not have been Brazilians. But these persons most probably are all of Goan or Mangalorean descent. Thousand of Goans and some Mangaloreans were serving with the British Merchant Ships, and many of these were torpedoed by the German War Machine, and as a result many lost their lives. Many telegrams used to arrive, daily, in Christian Goan homes telling of the sad demise of a relative; and so many widows were instantly created by the War. There also were a lot of Goans with the Royal Navy, some of whom I have later personally met in Bombay, and that's how I know. Others lived to tell the tale of how, after a ship wreck, they had been for hours on end, with life jackets on, in the oceans, before being picked up and taken to safety. Christian Goans were socially advanced, in that they had no taboos and other superstitions about eating or handling food that the British and westerners ate; and that is the reason they were employed in large numbers on variuos Ships at the time, and EVEN NOW. Hence there were also lots of 'caualties' with Christian Goan and Mangalorean names. The Mangaloreans and the Goans were all recruited through Bombay and Calcutta and Karachi, all of which were under British Domain, then. Never from Goa of that point in time. 2009/11/12 Michael Ali mikeal...@aol.com: On this Veteran's day let us pause and say a prayer for the large number of Goans who have laid down their lives in the service of their country. [Goanet] Turf Wars and Goa Inquisition
Hi Selma, Thank you for reading my post and an additional thanks for responding to it. From your response, it appears that you did not read Teo's article and had a passing glance at my post. Or else, we could have a more expanded dialog, to build on the issues being reviewed. If you read Teo's article, you would know that the dynamics of the period was described by Teo as a preamble to the details of Fr. Constantino's inquisition. The words in quotes are from Teo's writing. If you read my article carefully, rather than a rush to respond, I said so clearly in my post. With Teo's well-described 'background perspective'... What Teo wrote could be a learning lesson to all of us - to look at the facts on the ground in the context of the surrounding / associated events. There are better things we could do than shoot from the hip. We all make mistakes. Please do not reply with, Who is the WE?:=)) BTW, I am sure you know, in America piling-on is also called (more dramatically) as throwing in the kitchen sink. Do you know an appropriate Konkani phrase for the same? I can insert the phrase the next time I write on this subject - of course giving you the credit for the phrase. [Goanet] Be careful while visiting Goa, Britain tells its nationals
Be careful while visiting Goa, Britain tells its nationals IANS 12 November 2009, 09:42am IST PANAJI: Britain has warned its nationals that they should be careful while visiting Goa and the four major Indian metropolitan cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, which could be terror attack targets. Future attacks may target public places frequented by Westerners and expatriates, including the major metropolitan centres (Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai) and tourist areas such as Goa, says a travel advisory on the British government's foreign commonwealth office (FCO) website, which was updated Nov 11. The specific warning for British nationals in India, is in addition to a high general threat throughout the country, especially in public places and five-star hotels. The advisory asks British nationals to exercise caution when frequenting bars and other watering holes in the coastal tourist state, especially when it comes to spiked drinks. There have been reports of drinks being spiked and travellers, including British nationals, subsequently being robbed, sexually assaulted or dying, the advisory says, adding that in 2008 alone, 40 British nationals died in Goa. One fourth of these deaths resulted from drug or alcohol abuse. You should avoid beaches after dark where there is a risk of being attacked by packs of stray dogs, being robbed or sexually assaulted, the advisory states. The FCO website claims that the advice is based on information received from Britain's consular sources, intelligence agencies, apart from other local sources. All advice is based on objective assessments of the risks to British nationals - your safety is our main concern. We know that our travel advice can have a knock-on effect on travel, trade and political considerations, but we do not let this influence the advice we give, the website says. The Goa government is sensitive to adverse advice from European countries, especially Britain, whose nationals account for the lion's share of the 400,000 odd foreign tourists who come to Goa each season. No senior tourism ministry official was available for comment. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Be-careful-while-visiting-Goa-Britain-tells-its-nationals/articleshow/5221908.cms

Almost 3 decades later thanks to modern technology and individuals (R. Parrikar Joe co.) Goan heritage and patrimony is being exhibited on this forum. The blue canoe in my opinion is a timeless piece of photography captured in the serene waters of our motherland Goa. Unfortunately the information spilled on this forum has limited publicity among Goans in Goa. I would love to visit a meeting or two whilst I am in Goa. You had a competition Recently at Loitolim, Big Foot which is challenging to say the least but I would like to go one better and suggest a group meeting at the newly open Goa Chitra Museum. This would be even more challenging as the subjects present a wonderful opportunity to view Goa's past history in farming combined with a truly organic farm to wander and see how this all works. The owner and curator, Mr Victor Hugo Gomes has single handedly collected all the artefacts and lovingly restored those pieces that required it. The Goa Chitra Museum is a beautiful place to visit and most certainly an exciting and challenging place for the photographer. Victors contact number is 08326570877 Mobile 09850466165. Re: [Goanet] Non Resident Goans
I agree with FN. However at a 6.3% contribution to Goa's GDP [ 3% India] remittances are a cash cow for the politicians. I am particularly disturbed by the recommendations delineated by the Goa Migration Survey 2008 sponsors. The Government of Goa's message and inducements are unmistakable: Leave Goa, women and men. Toil, but send home to Goa the fruits of your sweat. We give your children scholarships and subsidies; we will offer specializeded training and placement for you to find work outside Goa. Just send home your money. Instead of retaining and investing in the workforce by job creation at home. And directing educational aid and opportunities to children and families of resident Goans where it is needed. To increase the living standard and prosperity of all resident Goans for present and future generations. Who elected these bozos? One more thing: Is Goa really more expensive than say Mumbai (with one of the costliest sq. footage space, on par with Hong Kong and Tokyo) or even Bangalore? best, I. Nunes ---On Wed, 11/11/09, Frederick Noronha fredericknoro...@gmail.com wrote: Are remittances of expats to be seen as something unquestionably positive, negative or a mixed blessing? Given that the extra money pouring into Goa leads to conspicuous consumption, a disinclination to earn one's own livelihood, fuells real-estate boom, contributes to inflation and making Goa one of the costliest non-metros (and even compared to the metros!) in India, and acts as a magnet for in-migration which we all lambast, isn't it time that we reassessed this issue? FN 2009/11/11 Antonio Menezes ac.mene...@gmail.com: From Goa's economic point of view , the remittances to Goa from the first group are overwhelmingly greater than remittances to Goa from the second group. -- Frederick Noronha :: +91-832-2409490 Writing, editing, alt.publishing, photography, journalism

[Goanet] Mestisos de Goa.....2
'' Saudades ''' is a Portuguese word that cannot be easily be translated in English language. Its nearest meaning could be ''' sighs on remembering past times '''. As a student in the forties/early fifties , I too have saudades that cannot be erased from my mind especially those of the so called members of the high society in Margao during the colonial days. They were mostly families whose members had somewhat white skin and physically were of better structure than other humble Goans. Their bungalows were concentrated in areas like Largo da Igreja ( Espirito Santo ) , on the road (I forget its name ) passing in front of Hospicio, on Abade Faria road, and in that part of Borda which is closer to church. Today these bungalows are closed with doors and windows shut and stand like tall ghosts of the past in Margao. Wonder if they are treated like evacue property by Govt of Goa. In 1954 when Daman enclaves like Dadra and Nagar Haveli were occupied by pro Indian sympathisers both India and Portugal became antagonists till Dec.1961. During this period of 7 years, it is possible most of these families emigrated to Portugal, Angola and Mocambique . My fellow students from these families never threw weight around but there were some dark skinned students who always tried to impose their ''superiority''on others by constantly reminding us ''' Nos somos bramanes. pa ''' According to my hindsight, it is possible and I could be wrong, the Portuguese Govt. took good care of white skinned mestisos and helped them to settle in Portugal and in their colonies in Africa but left the dark skinned mestisos in lurch to fend for themselves with church as ultimate solace.

[Goanet] Our Politicians and Corruption
Our Politicians and Corruption If sex is synonymous with glamour, then corruption too is synonymous with politics in India today. Politics is no more a virtuous profession that it once was, but an easy means towards money, power and position. Our politicians will spend any amount of money to get a ticket and then win an election by any means, fair or foul. Once elected the money spent, is recovered in record time. Even as Cricket, which was supposed to be a gentleman's game has acquired the viability and commerciality of a race course, politics has acquired the viability and the thrills of a casino, wherein jackpots are hit as per the ministries they are affiliated to, which in fact lubricate the silent wheels of fortune even further. No etiquette codes are followed or for that matter none required. Even the global economic melt down fails to stop the inflating fortunes of our politicians. With the acquired riches, starts the change in their life styles, sometimes very much evident but mostly camouflaged, prosperity covered under the blanket of professed austerity, frugality is no more of the essence, It is this changed life style, hidden or otherwise which often leads to health break down, but the beauty of it is, it is never evident and only surfaces when they are not well prepared or well equipped to answer the required related questions, faced with the dilemma of explaining the source of all their inflated bank accounts, assets or cash found stashed around. Then they get five star treatment in top hospitals at the cost of the exchequer rather than experience the discomforts of incarceration. Mr. Koda, the former Jharkhand CM, is a stunning example of our political cynicism. As per reports more than 60% of our present MP's have criminal records, some have even won elections sitting in prison cells, can we complain ? It's democracy sweetheart ! If we take a close look at Goan politicians, apart from the few entrepreneurs of the likes of Babu Naik, Dr. Jack Saquira, Anil Salgoankar and may be a few others who were really rich before they joined politics, most of the others were, lowly paid school teachers, two bit lawyers, cooks, tailors, junior engineers, there is a guy who sold milk for a living, who then turned to matka, headmasters, union leaders, two bit contractors and some social workers, all these guys, who just survived or struggled to survive earlier, have hit the jackpots in politics. The wheels of fortune have certainly been moving at a very fast pace. Struggling people like you and me, not just become millionaires but multi millionaires, in just a couple of years in politics, the secret of their success is pretty obvious and one does not have to be a brilliant thinker or a scholar to assimilate the causes of these riches but it is the quick transition from rags to riches that is the strange, inexplicable aberration that baffles everyone the most. How can our anti corruption agencies be so blind to the facts that are so obvious even to a layman ? Or do the agencies too have a share in the pie ? If so many politicians can get away with so much corruption then there is certainly something very much wrong within our system. If our corrupt politicians claim to have a heart problem or a stomach problem, so that they can have five star treatment at the best hospitals at the cost of the exchequer rather then the hardships of a prison cell, then our Indian democracy most certainly has an incurable cancer.
