[Goanet] Anthony D'Silva taken in police custody at independence day protest

2010-08-15 Thread sebastian Rodrigues

Today morning at around 8.45 am Anthony D'Silva was taken in police
custody in Margao when he staged protest to highlight plastic garbage in
Goa. Anthony dressed in boiler suit costumes with plastic empty
bottles tied all over his body got into the venue of flag hosting site
on Independence site. South Goa collector called in police force and
ordered Anthony be detained at police station till the official
independence day function gets over at around 11.00 am.

In
addition there are around 30 people associated with Goenchea Xetkarancho
Ekvott (GXE) affected with real estate, mining, tourism that are
protesting with banners and placards at the distance of 100 meters from
the official independence day function. so far they are not arrested.

Independence
day function is marked to observe the change of flags on 15 August 1947
wherein officially British rule in India came to an end. Goa however
was under Portuguese rule that continued till December 1961 under the
patronage of the caste and class elites engaged in mining business.

However
though British colonial rule formally ended colonial structure of
exploitation remained intact. There are several laws dealing with land
acquisition, Penal code, etc continued in free India making Independence
 only relative category.

More details are awaited.

Considering your comment above, is your "interesting sociological

or lower it further? Just asking, maaan!!

[Goanet] Talking Photo: Ferryboat, ferryboat everywhere but not a single ferryboat here

Ferryboat, ferryboat everywhere but not a single ferryboat here

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk27/4892637061/sizes/l/

This route being the busiest and in the capital city,
Often there is not a single  ferryboat here.

Who cares?
I mean, who cares for the 90% of the migrants who used this service?
Of the remaining 10, 8 are the two wheelers (upto 30 per trip).

Yesterday, we were here around 4pm (to go to Candolim Sangoodd)
only to see  there is no ferry here.
On enquiry, we were told the only ferryboat which was plying
is missing since 3pm.
(on our way back, we were told the service was resumed after
 3 hours i.e. 6pm)

Last week, we witnessed similar situation when we were to go
for dinner at Betim.
We were here at 8.30pm.  There was no ferry since 8pm and
it never resumed until next day.
(Usually, last ferry trip to Panjim-Betim is 10pm).
People were waiting impatiently for up to one hour hoping
the service  would resume soon…

Ferryboat service here  withdrawn  just like that with no prior
notice nor any info to say if it will resume shortly or not.

Yesterday, I asked one of the crew members..
‘Do our brand new ferries breakdown too?’
He replied - "..since the new ferry are with double engine,
it is used for tugging or pulling of other ailing or broke down
ferries at other routes to bring them at work station
And that’s what's we did on the last two occasions
by withdrawing it from here.."

Funny, very funny!

Note:
Earlier, I tried to copy CM and RND both bounced back, as always.

See the ferry situation here
and imagine the hardship the commuters are put to

Re: [Goanet] The Slap...

2010-08-15 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Fred,
many Anglo-Indians have Goichi names. I ain't sure where that came
from but here is a vague attempt:
apparently, in the old days of the Bretish-Indian Rail, there were
many generations of Goans who went to work and lived in railway towns.
I imagine they got mixed up with the railway-town culture and lost
tough with Goa. Having no connection to Goa and having to explain
their roots, they choose 'Anglo-Indians'. As well, I imagine it was to
get away from the stigma of being called a 'Goanese' *what ever
description that followed after*.

Goan nannies/ayas were sought after by royal courts and there is story
of some royal having a Goichi as a mistress- he built her a house or
some such and it still stands. I have been there as part of a school
trip and all I remember is her name was Maria.

About the Anglo-Indian with Goan names, in those days, I dated a
chikitata who was a Rebeiro. She insisted she was an Anglo and said
she had no doubts about it.

As well, another chikitita came from Madhya Pradesh and the father was
a caste Hindu and she said the mother was an Anglo. When the
meet-the-parents thing happened, the mother said she was actually not
an Anglo but was half Goan, half pucca Breetish. She said her
grand-father told her he left home as a small boy with the family when
his father got into the railways. Apparently, they lived on an Island
(likely Diwar) and had to cross by boat to the main-land. Her
grand-father returned to his native village just once and then lost
all contact. I was about to ask names etc when my partner intervened
to say her mother is a story-teller!!!

You wasted your precious time Joe. The chief guest Mr. Francis Silveira and his
brother Antonio will arrive for any function only when they are informed by
their chamchas that there is adequate crowd. They are not concerned about the
delay but they are more interested in publicity. Furthermore no organizers can
commence their event prior to their arrival.

Coconut Breaking Game
?
We?wanted to be there on time
So we arrived on time i.e. 3pm
No, it did not start at the stated time nor it started
90 minutes later
But it actually did at? 4.55pm.
As if they were waiting for their Chief Guest the
Local MLA and his brother, Zila Member.
No sooner, they arrived than the event started.
Local Sarpanch and the panch made it around
4pm though.
?
Tip: Next time when you know there is a politician as chief guest,
be there at least one hour later than the stated time.
In our case, we did not know nor it was said in the ad etc.
?
?
The Game:
This is the first time I ever watched them playing.
It needs two players.
One to set the ball (coconut) rolling and the other
to hit/break the ball using another hand held coconut
as striker.

Mostly, the opposition coconut breaks but sometimes
both break or none breaks.
Yet, there are situations where the opposition?s ball is
safe but the hitter?s (Striker) ball breaks

All the? winning/losing situations are selectively
included in the clip.
?
It?s Young Boys of Dugrem presentation of their
40th Traditional Coconut Breaking contest
on the feast day of their Paron St. Lawrence
on 10th August (every year same time/same venue)

pics were supplied earlier
There were other programs too such as Konkani songs,
Magic Show by Anil, Kids Fancy Dress, Folk dance followed
by Volley ball match between Curca Boys v/s Hausi Band
?
Sadly, we could not wait to watch all this as we
already wasted about 2 hours.. It was our feast too
and he had our own programes at home.
Except some parts of Magic Show by a local (Settled
in Loutorim) which we liked a lot.
A clip may be uploaded if time and mood permit.

[Goanet] independent india-THEN AND NOW

2010-08-15 Thread John Gomes
There is a vast difference between material and spiritual progress. I see today
on TV an adivasi family whose son is forced to steal food grains because his
old parents and family who are illiterate just cannot get jobs and are
starving!.They never heard of right to 100 days labour and the old man says
with tears his son is not a criminal. I also saw on TV before I went to the
flag hoisting ceremony in our colony,a senior milk federation bureaucrat
caught with crores of cash stacked in 4( full to the brim )lockers! Surely he
could not accumulate all this alone without others involved! This is shameful
.The crores of wasteful expenditure by our Netas is disgraceful and our feting
of these unworthies condemnable.None of them indicted is ever in jail or even
that preventing them from calling the shots!

It is reported that when asked about corrupt practises, MLAs state they are
only following traditions! They mean corrupt precedents and so continuous
scams  go on unnoticed/accepted as "we are like that only".So we have
politicians sponsoring applicants for jobs, cash for jobs and votes;
distributing money and favours to loyal or potential voters so they come across
as philanthropically caring  people who can give ration cards and subsidised
food grains to their aam admi! Giving such  out of turn inducements is not
considered as corruption and such bribery is rampant!

The enormous damage to the nation by pushing merit into the background and
filling jobs with mediocre people is now there for all to see in the
inefficiency of every government department with the nations pride at stake in
the CWG games . Vande Mataram and  Rammi Yum Yum , let us hope on this 64th
Independence Day, and THEREAFTER, its time for India!

Freedom is not about being free, it is a great responsibility. Freedom does not
give us the right to misuse our rights, but it gives us the power to make
better

choices. This Independence Day, let us stay away from the usual festivities and
pledge to free ourselves from the ills that exist in our society to build a

[Goanet] John Aki-Bua

2010-08-15 Thread Venantius J Pinto
Today John Aki-Bua came to mind. Certain people come to mind when Goa
engulfs my mind--a certain way.
Many years ago I met Dave Hemery (bronze medallist, 400-meter hurdles at
Munich 1972) in Marlborough, England at the redundant church of Sts Peter
and Paul.

>From the NY Times
http://www.nytimes.com/1997/06/25/sports/john-akii-bua-47-is-dead-ugandan-won-olympic-gold.html

In 1972, after only one international competition, Akii-Bua arrived at the
Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. His opposition in the 400-meter hurdles
included Dave Hemery of Britain, the world record-holder and defending
Olympic champion, and Ralph Mann, an American. His only pair of running
shoes was two years old, and one shoe was missing a spike.

But he was built ideally (6 feet 2 inches and 170 pounds), and he had
trained with frightening intensity. In the six months before the Olympics,
his training had included wearing a vest weighted with 25 pounds in lead as
he ran 1,500 meters over five hurdles that were 42 inches high -- the
hurdles for his race were 36 inches. He did four sets of those repetitions,
twice a day, every day.

He won the Olympic gold medal in 47.82 seconds, a world record, leaving the
silver medalist, Mann (48.51 seconds), and the bronze medalist, Hemery
(48.52), six meters behind. Then he ran a victory lap and jumped over the
hurdles again.

[Goanet] Talking Photos: SANGODD at Candolim etc

2010-08-15 Thread JoeGoaUk

 Sangodd at Camoti Wado, Candolim

Well, that was the first time we heard of Sangodd being
held here.
(The other usual place that we know of is Orda Sangodd on 29 June)

It took as a while to locate the place though.
More than half the people  we asked on Candolim road
near the ground were migrants so they were not aware
what we were talking about.
Finally, we had to reverse back to go to the venue which
was Behind the Gustav ..football ground or near
Silver Sand the local MLA’s Resort?

The crowd here was lot more than the Orda Sangodd.
Perhaps, Goan Nightingale Lorna is responsible for pulling
such a crowd.

This Sangodd was  not in a river or rivulet but in the Lake.
Very beautiful spot by the road side.
Beautifully or fruity decorated Sangodd.

Traditional Sangodd is held here on 14th of August every
year (for last 14 years).  One of the main organizers was
the local MLA’s brother.
(Santa Khuris Committee of Camoti Wado, Candolim)

Besides Lorna, there were other  top singers/actors too
such as Bab Andrew, Albert, Anil-Olga, Com. Domnic,
Bachan, Wonder boy Cameron etc
There were some local talents too.
One of them sang on revival of ‘Candolim football team’
which  was once very famous with top players
including Tomazin Cardoz and many others named.
I like the song so did most others. Infact,
one of the audience members
offered a spot cash prize of Rs.500 to the singer

We arrived there around just after 5pm
(30 minutes late due to non-availability of ferryboat
at Panjim-Betim route, as discussed earlier).
The event must have stated around 4pm.
At 7.30, there was a tiatr ‘Sogleank Nomoskar’ at Church all.

Remember, there are two SANGODDs at Candolim

What is SANGODD?
3 or 4 canoe boats joined together to form a SANGODD
upon which a mini chapel like structure is erected and/ or
a  Stage to perform for the artists- singing/acting/display etc.

‘people coming together’ is also a SANGODD

Someone rightly said ‘United we stand, divided we fall’

I wish we could form a 'SANGODD' to throw out the
present dirty political lot

Ok, let the pics do rest of the talking

RESPONSE: I saw a documentary just some weeks ago, titled the Monsoon
Railway. In it was an Anglo-Indian by the name of D'Cruz. He was of dark
complexion, a Roman Catholic and was in the North East of India - a train
station with the longest platform in the World!
Kharagpur,

At the Anglo-Indian open day fest, which took place here recently, there
were many Anglo-Indians with Portuguese surnames. It could well be that they
were Goans at one timethe Portuguese were also present for sometime in
the North East of India and many Catholic Bengalis and Bangladeshis have
Portuguese surnames!

Fred,
many Anglo-Indians have Goichi names. I ain't sure where that came
from but here is a vague attempt:
apparently, in the old days of the Bretish-Indian Rail, there were
many generations of Goans who went to work and lived in railway towns.
I imagine they got mixed up with the railway-town culture and lost
tough with Goa...
===
RESPONSE:
Coincidentally, yesterday the New York Times had a feature article on
Anglo-Indians. Excerpts:

1. The definition has varied over time, but under the Indian
Constitution the term Anglo-Indian means an Indian citizen whose paternal
line can be traced to Europe...

2. A former railroad engineer, Mr. Booth defines Anglo-Indian more
strictly than the Constitution does. He regards Goans with Portuguese and
French ancestry as pretenders...

3. Anglo-Indians received preferential pay during British rule ... In
the 1940s a British train engineer earned around 300 rupees a month, while
an Anglo-Indian would earn 200 and an Indian 100...

Not surprising that some Goans claimed to be Anglo-Indians ... There was
also the affinity to food & drink, music, religion, etc.

RAISING THE CURTAINS ON SCHOLASTIC WORK ON TIATR

- By Dale Luis Menezes

The brass band (accompanied by a few electronic instruments today)
strikes up for the third time. The auditorium fills with the vibrations
of wind and percussion instruments. The curtains rise to reveal a suited
man, wielding a mike, he paces the stage. The backdrop painted to
resemble a garden or a park. Thus begins a tiatr, familiar and cherished
by many Goans. Most of us are acquainted with this scenario, but what
about the history of tiatr? Many of us don’t know much. As for me, I
vaguely remember a Konknni textbook chapter in the VII standard
highlighting a (brief) history of the tiatr.

ABOUT THE BOOK

But I encountered a welcome light on this vibrant and most loved Konknni
drama in the form of Dr. André Rafael Fernandes’ researched book When
the curtains rise…Understanding Goa’s Vibrant Konkani theatre. Dr.
Fernandes reveals the history of tiatr: its birth and maturity, the
challenges it faces and the numerous personalities (past and present)
who have contributed to enriching this uniquely Goan art form. An
interesting feature of this book is the exhaustive list of present day
tiatrists given at the end of the book. Although the tiatr is 118 years
strong and though roughly ten shows of tiatr are held every day in Goa,
Dr. Fernandes cautions us about the onslaught of more glittering
multimedia like cable and television making serious dents.

This book is important because it has given tiatr some (much needed?)
legitimacy in the scholarly word. Dr. Fernandes traces the development
of theatre in Goa. Theatre in the medieval times in Goa was mainly in
the Portuguese language and themed on enacting the biblical scenes. The
College of St. Paul’s took the lead in organizing plays in vernacular
language in Goa.

Dr. Fernandes traces the origin of tiatr to the traditional
khells/phells/fells and zagors performed in Goa from time immemorial.
This khells traveled to Bombay with the immigrants and it is here that
the tiatr was born. Exactly how the tiatr was born, I leave it up to you
to find out (in the book)! Tiatr took birth due to the efforts of
Lucasinho Rebeiro and João Agostinho Fernandes, who were disgusted by
the vulgarity and ‘washing-the-dirty-linen-in-public’ attitude of the
zagors. A history of theatre of Bombay is also traced to buttress the
point as to why Konknni tiatr had to begin in that cosmopolitan city.

THE MUSIC AND TIATR

How can any Goan activity or festivity be complete without music? This
reality comes forcefully to the fore, as the Goans’ love and mastery for
music had a major role to play. A large part of tiatr (past and present)
contains music and song. Tiatr (and Goan musicians) did benefit from the
parochial music schools set up by the Portuguese as well as the more
traditional forms of ovis.

Dr. Fernandes tells us about the various famous musicians of Goan
extraction, who were sought out by the many bollywood producers and
starred hotels in Bombay. Although the Goan musicians had a large part
to play in Bollywood and the jazz scene of Bombay, they were sidetracked
as mere ‘arrangers’, lements Dr. Ferrnandes. More terse and blunt words
in the context of this injustice would have been welcome.

WOMEN AND TIATR

The single greatest contribution of tiatr, in my opinion, is the
admittance of women on the stage. Regina Fernandes (wife of João
Agostinho Fernandes) became the first woman in modern history to appear
on stage, preceding Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati theatre by
twenty-seven years. This means that Konknni tiatr was far ahead of its
time. It had brought in social reforms, which were easily accepted by
the conservative masses. Batcara I was the play in which Mrs. Regina
Fernandes made her historic appearance.

Dr. Fernandes does not dwell on this subject for much long, mentioning
it only cursorily. What I was hoping for was a rigorous assessment of
this situation, perhaps even a full chapter, was called for. If Mrs.
Regina is the first woman to appear on stage at a time when women
appearing on stage were frowned upon then isn’t she a role-model
deserving recognition not only from Goans but also from the whole
country? We should also not forget that in the same play, two other
women had accompanied Mrs. Regina on stage: Mrs. N. Gomes and Mrs.
Carmelina Fernandes.

CRITIQUE ON JOÃO AGOSTINHO’S PLAYS

Dr. Fernandes analyses the plays of João Agostinho with keen
understanding and finesse. João Agostinho is important in tracing the
history of tiatr as he has been rightfully called Pai Tiatrist (Father
of the Konknni tiatr). In plays like The Belle of Cavel, Batcara I & II
and Kunbi Jaki, Dr. Fernandes paints a mental picture of João Agostinho.
Pai Tiatrist had vociferously opposed casteism and alcoholism. His plays
always ended with a moral or homily (a hallmark of tiatrs in those times).

Dr. Fernandes informs us about the deeply

Dear Editor

CM, ministers and MLA’s are Anti Goans

Is Goa become a Banana state, or is it in a coma? I think so. These 40
Alibabas are really and trully despicably dishonest men.The recently
Assembly sessions proved to the Goan people that these 40 members were
acting a drama in the legislative assembly. So many scam were revealed, Both
ruling and oppositon demanded CBI inquiry into Drugs-Police nexus but to no
avail. One can say that the democary in the state of Goa is of the thief,
for the thief, and by the thiefs.

The CM including himself is heading a bunch of dishonest, corrup, venal, and
criminal. Yet citizen don’t seem to know or care .

Wake up Goan and see the rot that infested Goa. It is become a contegious
diease that has affected day to day life of the Goans. The great enemies of
Goa and the nation are those who rule and they are stealing you and your
children’s future.

In recent article on German news paper editoral wrote that India is become a
banana Republic instead of being an economic power. This applies to Goa too.
Whenever any scam is revealed, immdeiately the CM bow his head down and
promises to look into the matter. This CM is in office for last three years.
He made countless promise to the people of Goa. He can be called a CM of
promises. Can he tell the Goan how many promises did he fulfilled or
delivered. In the eyes of the people he is spineless CM, that Goa got since
liberation. His motive is loot and let loot the people of Goa.

In recent years Goa got a hit as regards to law and order. The situation is
gone out of hand and one can say that there is no fear of law, No respect to
the institutions, judicary is not functioning, this is because India’s(
elephanatine legal system will ensure culpability , is delayed) even the
murderers are getting bail which is unbelievable. Every day we read the
headlines in local paper that, murder, rape, robberies, dacoitry, scams.
corruption, kidnapping, cheating, goondagir, looting, Who is reponsible for
all this mess in Goa. What is the head of the state is doing? Is he blind,
deaf, or ignorant of the ground realities?.

CM normally knows everything what is happening in Goa but he does not act.
If he ignores and don’t act, he does not deserve to be the CM. It is long
time this guy should have resigned on moral and ethical ground.

CM is a pliable, as he lack a backbone. He follows orders from his master in
Delhi without questioning., since he lacks any sense of decency, ethics and
morality. He is a rubber stamp of his collegues ministes and MLA’s. Any one
else with even of iota of shame and humanity would long have quit that
dishonarable position. But not he. He is blissful unaware of the low status
he holds. Not one but scores of scam passed unnotices by him. Corruption is
so rampant in Goa under his leadership that the people have become inured to
it and the next multibillion dollar scam does not even evoke the mindest
surprise. Pratically all the news channels and agencies in Goa drink deep
from the well of corrupt money that the politician have. They are complicit
in the rape of Goa that CM and his cohorts are engaged in.

One day will come that these 40 thiefs who are raping Goa and depriving the
goan their true democracy to live a decent, honest, harmonious life will be
judged by the Goan themselves when the will vote for the next election. It
is up to the Goan to see that the day of reckoning is not too far.

Re: [Goanet] The Slap...

2010-08-15 Thread Nascy Caldeira
Hello Frederick,

I have not read the book; but there can be some truth as far as names of
characters in the book may be.
I know for certain that Bow Barracks was a stronghold of the Anglo Indian
Community in Calcutta. A lot of Goans and Mangaloreans and others with
Portuguese names from then Madras, used to frequent Anglo Indian Clubs and
community areas. Since these persons had Europeon names they could and would
easily go as Anglo Indians, and were accepted, as there was cultural affinitiy
too, to a large extant.

Also during the British Raj, and for a few years after Independance, there
used to be reservations and preferences in jobs for Anglo Indians, in the
Railways, Customs etc. The Railways were such Big organisations, all in the
private sector, that they used to breed 'Anglo Indains' so to say, only to run
the railways. Hence a lot or reservations were kept for some 15 years after
Independance.
Goans and Mangaloreans abound here , masquerading as Anglo Indians to get into
and keep their jobs. They could easily do that, what with Europeon nmaes and
cultural affinity.

When Australia first opened its doors for non white emigrants, in the early
60's they allowed people of mixed origin (with any Europeon mix) to come and
settle there. Then was the rush of Anglo Indians, and 'Burgers' from then
Ceylon to emigrate to Australia; and in this rush, I have known many a Goan and
Mangalorean and Mumbai Christians (East Indians) also with Portuguese names
make a bee-line and head for Australia, the Anglo Saxon Paradise.

I think this is where 'the racist connection' comes in, in the book's
narrative. Much after that, Australia did open its borders to all with skills
and their dependents who would otherwise be destitute in their home countries.
And multiculturism flourished and later and now is a 'bone of contention' as
most people did not integrate at all, even in a small way. Hence the present
day problems that Australia has to deal with.
I hope, I have is some way helped.

Nascy

KALA MOGI
to stage an English play

United We Stand

Kala Mogi, Candolim will stage an English play in 2 Acts entitled
“United We Stand” on 16th August, 2010 at JAF Auditorium, Ravindra
Bhavan Margao and on 17th August at 7.00 p.m. at DMK Auditorium, Kala
Academy Panjim.

KALA MOGI
Candolim.
Kala Mogi was born in the year 1978. Literally ‘Kala’ means art and
‘Mogi’ means lovers. Our aim in establishing a cultural institution like
Kala Mogi was only to make efforts to raise the standard of Konkani
Tiatr. We feel proud to state that we achieved this goal to some extent.
We also felt that we have talents to contribute in the promotion and
preservation of Mando & Dulpods. We entered in this field too and
succeeded. Kala Mogi has contributed to the cultural field of Goa for
the last 32 years, especially as far as Tiatr, Mando and Dulpods and
other folk songs are concerned. During these 32 years it has made
successful efforts to introduce innovations on the Tiatr stage. In doing
so, it has earned a lot of appreciation from the lovers of Tiatr. Kala
Mogi has won numerous awards from Kala Academy and other cultural
organizations. Its work has been recognized by both Government and
non-Government organizations

KONKANI PRODUCTIONS
Although Kala Mogi was established 32 years back, the founders of Kala
Mogi actively participated in the cultural activities of Goa from as far
back as 1957. Till date Kala Mogi has produced and staged 35 Konkani
Tiatrs, most of them written and directed by Tomazinho Cardozo. Most of
these are award-winning Tiatrs in various competitions and festivals
organized in the state of Goa. Tiatrs produced by Kala Mogi have become
trend-setters in the field because of its innovations on the Tiatr stage..

ENGLISH PRODUCTIONS
After having performed on the Konkani stage for a very long time, Kala
Mogi produced for the very first time an English Play, ‘The Verdict’ in
2006. Originally written in Konkani, it had been adapted in English by
Irene Cardozo and was directed by Tomazinho Cardozo. “The Verdict”
became a big success. Kala Mogi produced its second English production
“Sweet Poison” in 2008. This play too received encouraging reviews from
the press and a lot of appreciation from the lovers of English Theatre.
“United We Stand” is our third attempt in this field. We are confident
that “United We Stand” too will be liked by one and all. “United We
Stand” is an adaptation of Tomazinho Cardozo’s original Konkani play
“Ami Soglle Ek”. The adaptation is done by Irene Cardozo and the play is
directed by Tomazinho Cardozo

“UNITED WE STAND - Synopsis
This play in 2 Acts throws light on the Goan society in the
post-liberation years. Rojin and Laximi are neighbours and although they
professed different religions lived for so many years in harmony and unity.

After the Liberation of Goa, the first Assembly elections come along
and, thanks to the contesting candidates, the seeds of communalism are
sown in order to get votes. Rojin and Laximi become deadly enemies of
each other.

But their sons Mikel and Kishore know that this deadly monster of
communalism will destroy our society. So they make a fervent attempts
for unity and communal harmony in the society.

Is anyone listening? Come and find out for yourself.

OUR AIM IN STAGING ENGLISH PLAYS
We are aware of the fact that staging of English plays in Goa is not
financially viable. One needs the support of sponsors and wellwishers.
In order to create that support, we felt that we must show few of our
presentations to the lovers of English Theatre free of any admission
fee. This will help the English Theatre goers to have the first hand
knowledge of our theatre skills in the presentation. Our aim is to
continue producing English plays regularly so that Kala Mogi can step in
to at least partially fill up the vacuum that we find presently on the
English Theatre Stage in Goa.

I was not even in 1961, but history tell us Nehru and his Congress Party
are biggest liars of 20th century. 'Special status' is raked time and again
and brought to forefront when elections are around only to be dumped after
election. Why Digu Kaka remembers the dead dream this 15th August 2010.

BTW, what is the significance of 15th August 1947 Independence of India
to Goans which was under Portuguese rule and was not part of India? Should
Goans really be celebrating Independence of India which preached 'Ahimsa' to

coastal regulations zone (CRZ) would not have cropped up if Goans had to ask
for special status from Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru soon after
liberation, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said on Saturday.
"If we had to ask for a special status, Pandit Nehru would have given
special status for the State of Goa. Unfortunately, we did not think on those
lines and that's why we are facing lots of problem," Kamat said.
The chief minister said that Pandit Nehru was in mood to give whatever
Goans wanted at that time.
"At that time probably if Goans have had to put up certain demands then,
the prime minister would have agreed to it. But we failed to put it up before
him," Kamat said.
Chief Minister was talking at the concluding session of the two-day-long
media workshop on 'Coasts, Coastal Populations and their Concerns' jointly
organised by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Goa Union of
Journalists (GUJ) at Goa University.
At the briefing, Kamat was justifying why Goa was added in the list of
special consideration in the proposed CRZ 2010 Act.
"When we put up our case for special consideration before Ministry for
Environment and Forest (MoEF) our aim was to protect the rights of traditional
fishing community, who have been staying on the coast for years," he explained.
He believes that CRZ policy should be such which will protect the coast
and at the same time won't deprive the fisherman from their livelihood.
"There has to be total transparency in the regulation.that's what we call
good governance," he added.
"The sentiments of the people need to be taken into confidence, while
taking major steps," he stated.
Kamat admitted that the developmental pressure on the coast is increasing
day-by-day and in the bargain the traditional inhabitants of the coast are
getting targeted.

[Goanet] Selma Carvalho: Who the bleep cares about Shiroda?

2010-08-15 Thread Eddie Fernandes
Title: Who the bleep cares about Shiroda?
By Selma Carvalho.
Source: Goan Voice UK Daily Newsletter 15 Aug. 2010

My eighty-year old father sits in the small car, hunched and wearied by age.
His face registers little interest in the journey ahead to Shiroda. That
interest in discovering a historical past to our lives belongs only to my
generation in the family. His world is grounded in his present. He doesn't
feel the need to find his roots in order to discover himself.

I tremble with momentary anticipation. Over 100 years ago my grandmother
Catarina Dias had set forth from Shiroda and resettled in Nuvem. I have
never been to Shiroda, neither has my father. I have nothing but a sketchy
description of the place read in a book, Goa and the Blue Mountains, rather
ironically penned by the English explorer, Sir Richard Francis Burton. To
Burton it was a decidedly Hindu town. For me the intrigue began here. A
decidedly Hindu town is where my DNA sprung from, yet everything about my
upbringing has be so definitively Catholic, leaving little room for
alternative interpretations of life. There are those Goans who feel
resonance with their Hindu roots. It would be disingenuous of me to profess
to be one of them. The village of Nuvem, like so much of coastal Goa, is so
thick with Christianity, it reeks of every cultural artefact the Portuguese
brought with them. Houses with elaborate altars, wayside crosses, brass
bands playing at Sunday feasts, festive tables over laden with pork and
beef, a dialect flowing with borrowed Portuguese words, matronly dresses
worn by older women, cascading skirts by younger girls, the music, the
mannerism, everything has been assiduously doctored to create a curious
Western incongruence in the Indian subcontinent, which in my case has
deepened through years spent away from Goa. For me to profess that I am a
synthesis of sorts would be a falsehood.

Yet, less than an hours drive away from Nuvem, the landscape changes. Tall,
towering coconut trees snake their necks into the sky, thick oak and mango
trees bask languorously in feeble monsoonal sunlight alongside powdery
unidentified blossoms and sugar cane. Houses lie hidden in nooks created by
the undulations of hills and the odd rakish monkey swinging from the trees
has transported us into another world largely untouched by the scourge of
"mega-projects". It is breathtaking. As Burton had promised, the town is
decidedly Hindu. We wind our way to the overcrowded market square, where
ungainly buses doggedly manoeuvre the roads trying to avoid squatting fruit
and vegetable vendors. These are not the stereotypical Hindus, one is
brought up to expect in Catholic dominated coastal regions. They are not
porcelain skinned Hindus with doe-eyes. They look more like the Catholic
Goans I grew up with; smallish, darkish, their saris worn like the kapod my
own grandmother wore.

We park our car outside the Kamakshi temple. We elicit little curiosity.
They are used to tourists gawking at them. Surely my ancestors would not
have been allowed to pray at this temple. It seems counter-intuitive that
Christianity has allowed me entry. The human heart remains universal though.
I see men and women negotiating with the Divine through offers of coconuts,
their hands folded in devotion. Save for the red bhindi between their eyes,
they could be Nuvemkars standing in front of portraits of Caucasian Gods.
The folded hands of my ancestors had unfolded their hearts at some point in
my generational chain in a Catholic Church. From here we make our way to St
Joseph's Church.

The white church, unsurprisingly perched on a hilltop overlooking a lush,
green carpet of wet grass, is a rather spartan, modern looking structure. I
find my heart sinking. Surely no clues to my ancestry can rest in a Church
which looks younger than me. Yet, the kindly lady inside tells us the Church
dates back to the 18th century and was rebuilt in 1782 and again in 1890.
According to the 2006 Church Directory, a "mission" of Shiroda was created
in 1894 by the Archbishop of Goa and entrusted to the Society of Pilar,
spanning from Shiroda to Colem, including Panchwadi, Molem, Dabal and
Sanvordem.

"We have records going back to 1860," the lady informs me and promptly
places a baptismal book dating back to 1875 into my hands. I am amazed it is
this simple. I leaf through the book, a tremendous sense of history,
sweeping over me. Some meticulous Jesuit priest had diligently handwritten
name after name of baptised Goans, noting parentage after parentage. The
writing, so typical of the era was long, flowing, stylized and almost
illegible. Somewhere in these books, locked away in the steel Godrej
cupboard, standing in the corner of the room darkened by the overcast sky
and brooding devotion, was the name of my great-grandfather. A link to my
past, leading to his father and mother. I vowed to come back and look for
it.

As I left the church, I began to wonder about my fascination with the pa

Please check out my music video celebrating World Goa Day 2010. I'm
very happy & proud to be asked by Rene Barreto to compose a song for
World Goa Day 2010. It was fun and also a challenge to write and sing
lyrics in Konkani! My grandparents left Goa a long time ago and both
my parents & all my siblings were born in Tanzania, East Africa, so
I was brought up in English. Composing this song, "Goa" has offered
me the opportunity to explore & to learn more about this beautiful
language -- Konkani.

I've had the pleasure of performing songs in Konkani on several occasions in
Canada. I performed as a soloist in Konkani for the International Goan
Convention at Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto in 1988, Viva Goa, 1998, Toronto,
Toronto Hilton Concert, 1998, and at my concert at the Al Green Theatre,
Toronto on May 8, 2010. I also had the privilege of performing on July 1, 2010
for the Canada Day celebrations in downtown Montreal, Phillips Square,
representing the QGA. I will be recording a Konkani song on my next album
which will be available in the near future.

Please feel free to forward the video for World Goa Day 2010

[Goanet] Ambassador’s Message on India’s Ind ependence Day

2010-08-15 Thread Goa World

Ambassador’s Message on India’s Independence Day

Kuwait:
On the 63rd anniversary of the Independence Day of India, I extend
warmest greetings to all members of the Indian community in Kuwait and
thank our many dear Kuwaiti friends for their sincere good wishes.

On this historic day we pay homage to those who so selflessly and
courageously fought for India’s freedom. We also remember with deep
gratitude the brave guardians of our frontiers and our compatriots who
have over the years sacrificed their lives for the safety and security
of our nation. We re-dedicate ourselves to building a modern, vibrant
India, and to serving our people and the larger cause of humanity.

In the little over six decades since its independence India has secured
a unique and respected place in the comity of nations. The largest, most
diverse democracy in the world, buttressed by a free media and an
independent and impartial judiciary, India is committed to tolerance,
harmony, equality, justice, and the rule of law. It is deeply satisfying
to see a country of well over a billion people, characterized by vast
linguistic, religious, ethnic and cultural diversity, so confidently
moving ahead as one.

In purchasing power parity terms, India is already the fourth largest
economy in the world. It is also one of the world's youngest nations,
with 55% of India’s population below 25 years. This provides a solid
human resource base to power our development and growth. India also has
the second largest arable land area and is one of the largest food
producers in the world. It is a software powerhouse and a global
sourcing hub, especially for IT enabled services and business process
outsourcing. Its prudently regulated and well capitalized banking system
is among the most extensive in the world. India has the largest number
of listed companies and the third biggest investor base in the world.
Its foreign exchange reserves exceed $283 billion. The Indian economy is
set to reach $1.51 trillion in the current fiscal year, rising to $1.72
trillion in 2011-12 and $2 trillion in 2013-2014.

With a large middle class, dynamic and innovative entrepreneurs,
plentiful scientific and technical manpower, diversified industrial
base, and abundant raw materials, India is an attractive business and
investment destination. The India economy has over the last several
years maintained one of the highest growth rates in the world. India has
not only weathered the latest global economic crisis well, but has been
an anchor of global economic stability. The IMF has forecast 9.4% growth
for India during 2010. With a domestic savings rate of 35%, robust
macroeconomic fundamentals, sound economic institutions, and a stable
balance of payments position, India is set to maintain a sustained 9-10%
growth trajectory.

With a view to removing infrastructure bottlenecks, India is
implementing an ambitious programme of investment in power, roads,
ports, airports, irrigation, telecommunications, and urban
infrastructure. India’s infrastructure investments alone will top US$500
billion over the next few years, with its energy supply increasing by
three to four times and its power capacity by five times. India’s next
five-year plan, starting in 2013, is to include $1 trillion towards
infrastructure development, with around half of that likely to come from
private funds.

India stands out as one of a few countries where substantial growth is
taking place and profits are being made. It has one of the most liberal
and transparent FDI policies among emerging economies. Many recent
studies rate India as one of the world’s most attractive FDI
destinations. UNCTAD’s World Investment Report 2010 projects India among
the most promising investor-home countries in 2010-12 as well as the
third highest economy for FDI in 2010-12. India also welcomes portfolio
investment in company equity by qualified institutional investors.
Relaxed entry procedures have created a favorable climate for foreign
investment in India and it is timely to seriously explore investing into
the infrastructure, energy and other sectors in India.

India is also a major source of investment abroad, in both developing
and developed countries. Many Indian companies have reached out
overseas, through cross border mergers and acquisitions or direct
investments, so as to access high-growth markets, technologies and
knowledge, attain economies of size and scale, and leverage
international brand names.

While India’s stature is growing with every year, enormous challenges
remain in eradicating poverty, disease, and illiteracy. India is
pursuing an ambitious programme for social and economic transformation
of its citizens on the margins of its growth story. We seek caring and
inclusive growth that brings tangible benefits to all, as we invest in
education, health and sanitation, care of the elderly and differently
abled, employment generation, skill d

[Goanet] Goa needs moral revolution: Guv

Dear Editor

Thank you
Goa needs moral revolution: Guv
PANAJI: GovernorS S Sidhu
  has
called for what he called a 'moral revolution' as a counter to the
happenings in the society. He made the statement while extending warm
greetings to the people of Goa on the eve of India's Independence Day.

He said "serious concern is being expressed about the degeneration of social
values and public morality in Goan
  society".
Sensational crimes, social evils like drug addiction, drug trafficking,
corruption, environmental degradatin, etc are projected as a counter image
of the state, the governor said.

In this backdrop, "the need of the hour is a moral revolution", he said.
Sidhu pointed out that no society can truly survive, sustain and progress
without a strong foundation of moral and ethical values.

The governor said though Goa joined the national mainstream 14 years after
India gained freedom from
foreign rule, it has made laudable progress in every field of human
activity.

Stating that the state cannot be complacent, the governor said the programs
initiated by the government need to be implemented on a time-bound basis and
stressed the need for strengthening of adminstrative and service delivery
systems "so that they become more efficient, productive, result-oriented and
responsive to people's aspirations".

Referring to tourism, the governor said "to reorient our strategy and create
world-class tourist services and facilities to enable this key industry to
grow further",without compromising on its natural environment and
socio-cultural and spiritual values.

The technical details of the study are never part of full disclosure. Full
disclosure involves a general statement on the nature of the study, the risks
and benefits involved, and a statement about financial conflicts of interest.
General statement on the nature and benefits has been provided. There are no

Not usually, but sometimes, depending on the nature of the involvement.
Impersonal internet-based studies do not in most cases involve compensation.
Participation is voluntary. The response from participants in such cases is
usually about 20 - 30%.

The study is independent of the smartness of the participants and/or list

The study is independent of the literacy level of the participants and/or list

I was not even in 1961, but history tell us Nehru and his Congress
Party are biggest liars of 20th century. 'Special status' is raked time and
again and brought to forefront when elections are around only to be dumped
after election. Why Digu Kaka remembers the dead dream this 15th August
2010.

BTW, what is the significance of 15th August 1947 Independence of
India to Goans which was under Portuguese rule and was not part of India?
Should Goans really be celebrating Independence of India which preached
'Ahimsa' to the world but 14 years later used military force to occupy Goa?

CM, ministers and MLA's are Anti Goans

Is Goa become a Banana state, or is it in a coma? I think so. These 40
Alibabas are really and trully despicably dishonest men.The recently
Assembly sessions proved to the Goan people that these 40 members were
acting a drama in the legislative assembly. So many scam were revealed, Both
ruling and oppositon demanded CBI inquiry into Drugs-Police nexus but to no
avail. One can say that the democary in the state of Goa is of the thief,
for the thief, and by the thiefs.

The CM including himself is heading a bunch of dishonest, corrup, venal, and
criminal. Yet citizen don't seem to know or care .

Wake up Goan and see the rot that infested Goa. It is become a contegious
diease that has affected day to day life of the Goans. The great enemies of
Goa and the nation are those who rule and they are stealing you and your
children's future.

The situation is
gone out of hand and one can say that there is no fear of law, No respect to
the institutions, judicary is not functioning, this is because India's(
elephanatine legal system will ensure culpability , is delayed) even the
murderers are getting bail which is unbelievable.

If he ignores and don't act, he does not deserve to be the CM. It is long
time this guy should have resigned on moral and ethical ground.

CM is a pliable, as he lack a backbone. He follows orders from his master in
Delhi without questioning., since he lacks any sense of decency, ethics and
morality. He is a rubber stamp of his collegues ministes and MLA's. Any one
else with even of iota of shame and humanity would long have quit that
dishonarable position.

It
is up to the Goan to see that the day of reckoning is not too far.

you do not understand my logic, neither do I understand yours. Scandals
can

be everywhere, it is part and parcel of our fallen human nature.

My response: I believe understanding you as "Father" is more important
than

understanding your logic and me! Accidents (fallen human nature in your
terms) do take place hence it is rightly called accidents! But if
something

is perpetually taking place it is not called fallen or accident. On the
contrary, such avoidable acts like clergy sex scandals needs immediate
plugging out from the system! Or else it will ruin the entire enclave.
**Media can blow events out of proportion. Sin does exist in society and
in church.

Our effort should be against the "accidents", sin, fallen nature...
Because there are "accidents", do you give up travelling? Or are you taking
more care?
Are you trying to contribute for less accidents? Fallen human nature is
there for us to cope up with.
Do you have your environment without any "accidents"? Are you not
experiencing fallen nature?
Being a "Father" (Catholic priest) , I am much more in contact with the
fallen nature than you.
Hence my logic will be different from yours. As I said, you do not
understand my logic, neither do I understand yours...

Let us be compassionate and empathetic... We believe in forgiveness: God

My response: Again, Your above expression has come out as your implied
logic. I have never said so!
**Again, that is the answer for your implied difficulty. You are harping
on the same keys, again and again...

Let us straighten what is crooked, let us march on...

Fr. Ivo wrote: If there are scams and scandals among the leaders of the
society, are we stagnant? What can we do in this situation? This should be
our question today and always.

My response: Cardinal principle says, "Let's set our house in order first
and only than we can attempt to set our neighbors houses right". As far as
your question about scams and scandals in society is concerned there are
ample laws to take care and government is entrusted with the
responsibility

to ensure safety in society.
**We know how much the government takes care of us in India and in Goa.

Why are we complaining so much every day?
We know how law takes care of crimes, thefts, scams, smuggling, rapes,
murders, riots...
Why are we so insecure? We try to put our house in order, but there will be
"accidents" galore,
as in a family, the father himself is a drunkard or a thief, but he will try
to admonish his son not to drink, not to steal...
Children have to shine in spite of the "accidents" fallen to the father and
mother...

Fr. Ivo wrote:...instead of dividing ourselves in terms of religion or any
other divisive force, when it is misunderstood. Let us foster what unites
us, shun what divides us...

My response: That's exactly what I believe in. But what I see in most
messages in Goanet is exactly opposite i.e. "Shunning what units
us..and...
fostering what divides us". Fr. Ivo do check goanet archivesyou want
be

surprised to digest what I have written.
**If you are doing it, then continue to do it... Help others also to do it.
In Margao there are so many meetings
for the purpose of expurging the evil ("accidents") from the social life, on
problems that we are facing. Some are only
for Catholics, like Couples for Christ; others are open for all, like
Alcoholics Anonymous. You can learn from those
who are better informed, as well as give your own contribution. Let us hope
to do so!

Inculcating green habits
Published on: August 11, 2010 - 22:31

BY ARTI DAS | NT NETWORK

They say a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. So, it’s
very important to take that first step to initiate a change and this is
exactly what a group of like-minded individuals did some 19 years ago at
Siolim.

They started a unique festival of plants and flowers to inculcate a
green habit among the people of Siolim and to send a positive message
across. This has now become an integral part of this village.

Spearheaded by cartoonist, Alexyz Fernandes and his good old pal and
photojournalist, Mr Joel D’Souza and their close associates the festival
has now become an annual event that is backed with a plant exhibition
and sale, talks and discussions and various other events.

“This idea struck me some 20 years ago when I visited a plant exhibition
at Kala Academy, Panaji. I mentioned to Joel that we needed to start
such an event in our own village and that’s how the festival began. Way
back in 1992 we began on a small scale. We started under the name Green
Heritage. I remember we used to travel in a tempo around the village and
collect plants and saplings from villagers to host this festival. We
managed to follow the same system for five years. But, then it was quite
taxing for us due to our other responsibilities. Thus, we approached the
St Xavier’s School, Siolim and they willingly accepted the concept of
hosting this festival,” recollects Alexyz who is still very much a part
of this festival.

As the years passed by the festival gained popularity and thus they
started inviting nurseries, hosting events relating to students and also
roped in experts.

“I was always an environment-friendly person so I thought of this
concept, but I had no technical know-how about plants. So, I approached
Mr Miguel Braganza, an expert on the subject. Mr Braganza has been a
part of the event since.”

This year the festival will be celebrated from August 13-15 at SFX
School Complex, Siolim. The theme for this year is ‘Organic Vegetables’.

“This year we have around 20 schools participating. We have asked the
students of SFX school to bring plants from their own garden. Thus, we
will have a floral display of these plants,” confirms Diego Pinto,
organiser of this year’s event.

The event will be formally inaugurated by Mr Orlando Rodrigues, MD, Goa
Horticulture Department at 11 a.m. on August 13 at the main auditorium
of the school complex.

A cooking competition for the parents of the school students will be
held. “These parents will have to prepare one vegetarian dish and bring
it to the school,” adds Pinto.

A quiz competition is being held for the students on August 14. “We are
having around 15 schools participating in this quiz. They will be
quizzed on local Goan vegetables–local names, seasons and even history,”
informs Pinto.

For the higher secondary students, an essay writing competition will be
held. Students have to write on any one topic—‘Vegetarian food is the
key to good health’ or ‘Organic farming–playing safe?’

The highlight of the event is the talk on earthworms by Dr Sultan Ismail
of New University, Chennai and Earthworm Research Foundation on August
14. The Green Heritage Eco Club will also release their book on ‘Growing
Vegetables Organically’ on August 13.

The organisers are hopeful that this event will make students more
eco-conscious and will help to take a green step forward. “Goa is
already losing its tree cover due to hill-cutting, deforestation etc.
But, with events like these people will get a chance to plant more trees
and help Goa,” concludes Alexyz.

[Goanet] KTC

2010-08-15 Thread bruno.gomes
Dear Editor,

Please publish my article

Thank you

Bruno Gomes

Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) should be named as Kadama Transport
Chorancho.

It was set up in 1980 by the Congress government, then headed by Pratapsing
Rane. Goa has long dependent on privatised bus-transport with the objective
of providing safe, reliable, time saving. Comfortable, and affordable
Efficient, services to the travelling public.

The entire share capital of the Company is held by the Government of Goa.
(Mean by the Goans) The total share capital as on date is Rs. 25.90 crores.

While the KTC has provided transport and connectivity to Goa's main towns
and rural hinterland, it has also, in recent years, faced charges of
mismanagement, politicisation and corruption in some of its deals.

It has become a cash cow for the Minsiters and his henchmen and a white
elephant for the people of Goa.

The 30 year of KTC history speak volumes. What are its achievements? Did it
fulfil the objectives for what it was created for? Goan must ask questions
whether the KTC is worth existing. Did the Goans benefited of this monster
created by the Government of Goa. 30 year of loss, without vision and
foresight. Yes you won't believe it, it is 30 year of a hole, wherein
crores of Goans money went in the drain. The coffers of the KTC are empty
for what reason? Ask the ministers who rocked this Baby for last 30 years.
And now the present Minister is white washing the eyes of the Goan by
announcing the half hazard measures to redress the KTC

Firstly, this white Elephant failed because of mismanagement by the very
people who created it. Goan must ask the question to the the Minister, and
the Director of transport as what is the vision for the corporation for
another 15 to 20 years? Will they continue to sail in the loss boat for
another 20 years? Who is responsible for this disaster?

Management is like a captain of the ship. If you have a good captain you are
sure that your ship will reach safe port. But if you have a bad captain the
ship will sink, this is what is happening in Goa. All these 30 years we had
bad captains to run the corporation who had no vision, no strategy, no
planning, no control, responsibility and accountability. All these 30 years
goans have financed it without questioning the people who are running it.

In recent Assembly Session not a single MLA raised his voice to highlight
the heavy loss of the corporation. No one is held responsible for this
disaster. Why did they (MLA's) not ask the Chairman and the Directors to
resign for the mismanagement? What is the Chief Minister doing with this rot
year after year?

In Bombay the BEST is run with efficiency and with responsibility is one of
the biggest organisations in the country. Why is the Goa transport Minister
takes an example and be guided by their principle and Model which had shown
the results for years?

What we witness is that the Goan money is spent without return. If the
corporation is running in loss and not viable even to pay the salaries of
the Chairman and the Director and its employees, than it is high time that
the Government privatize the Corporation. Minister must be stupid, ignorant
or senseless to allow operating just 5% stage carriage operations within
Goa, whereas 95% is operated by private operators. Hence, KTC has to
overcome fierce competition with private operators, Why don't you silly
minister use your hard brain and use at least 50 % operating route and let
50% be given to the private operators? Cancel or operate the routes which
are not beneficial, let the private operators take over those routes. Bring
news schemes to generate revenue (for example publicity on the buses)

KTC should tighten control on the functioning of the corporation. Optimize
the human resources as well as hard wares. Use like in the west the
principle of accountability and reward the people for their performance, use
the principal of Hire and Fire those who are not performing. Hire the best
brain from the country to run the corporation.

Our minister has a big mouth to say KTC run in heavy loss due to increased
of diesel cost and blaming the sixth pay commission for the increase of
wages to its employees. How can the corporation execute the sixth pay
commission recommendation when its coffers are empty? Why don't you
rationalise the human resources instead of hiring more and more in the
department? What measures had been proposed by the Director to reduce the
cost. What are the plans in the future to reduce cost in the corporation?
Fix the objectives for the Director and put conditions if he don't achieve
the fixed objectives then he should quit or resign.

Recently we read in the local papers that Government is planning to buy new
buses. How can the corporation finance these buses when the KTC is not
financially sound and running is heavy loss? This will lead to increase in
debt of the corporation and will put a heavy burden on the travellers

[Goanet] Jayadeva's Poems

2010-08-15 Thread Ivo

  Dear Goanetters,

A little knowledge about Jayadeva and Gita Govinda. Prof.José Pereira has
studied it thoroughly. He knows it in sanskrit.

  Regards.

  Fr.Ivo

"Jayadeva's Gitagovinda is quite passionately erotic, but it is also
considered a highly spiritual work, sung daily in many Indian temples dedicated
to Krishna.

For many in the Krishna bhakti tradition, the Gitagovinda is revered in a
way similar to the Song of Songs in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Through song, it tells of the love play, separation, and union between
the God-man Krishna and the cowherdess Radha.

On an esoteric level, Radha is understood to be the individual soul that
petulantly feels abandoned by God (Krishna) who, in turn, loves all souls (and
is therefore accused of infidelity by Radha). But Radha finally overcomes her
hurt and rejoins her lover in passionate union. Using the hugely magnetic power
of desire, this bhakti classic describes a pathway to return to Oneness with
the Divine.

Little can be said with historical certainty about the life of Jayadeva,
though legend suggests that he was born into a Brahman family and educated in
literature and sacred texts before he abandoned scholarship for the life of a
sadhu, a wandering ascetic. It is said that he later married Padmavati, a high
caste temple dancer, and as he wrote his masterpiece the Gitagovinda, Padmavati
danced -- a dynamic play between conception and expression, mirroring the
classical balance between the transcendent Male and the manifesting Female.

Jayadeva's name can be translated as "God triumphs" and he often plays
with this meaning in his poetry.

A couple of Jayadeva's songs are also gathered in the Sikh holy book The
Adi Granth".

***One vital element is the ecstatic rhythm of the dance, which is best
conveyed with an octosyllabic line. So, using assonance for yamakas:

With sandal smeared the bluish body,

  garlanded, with yellow clothes.

With jewelled earrings on the cheeks,

to and fro the smiling roves. 1.38

  How happily the women play.

  Yet another, young and artless,

  Hari. 1.40

  How happily the women play.

  Assessment:

A loose translation where we have lost abundance, sport, moving, adorned,
pair, distinguished, in group, fifth, face, lotus and woman. In the academic
world the omissions would be censured, but we should weigh gains and losses. On
the debit side, these in the original are redundant: adorned,

[Goanet] RIBANDAR - PANAJI ROAD A DEATH TRAP

2010-08-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
21 year old Nimesh Kholkar is the latest casualty of the treacherous
Ribandar – Panaji road. The stretch of road from the Goa Institute of
Management right to Panaji is in a pathetic state. The potholes are
countless. The repairs over the years have been sub-standard. PWD Minister
Churchill Alemao recently visited Ribandar and saw for himself the awful
state of the road.

The reckless speeding and overtaking by buses on this road especially on the
Ribandar – Panaji causeway is a matter of great concern. While buses race,
precious lives are being lost. Overtaking is officially prohibited on this
stretch of the road, yet the transport and traffic authorities continue to
turn a blind eye. How many more lives will have to be lost before the
authorities awaken? Will they finally act only after one of their family
members fall under the wheel?
