I was unable to pull up the webpage but I do seem to remember such a button
on other pictures. If I can find anything else, I will let you know.

I'm at work on an English gable hood, as seen in this image: http://
commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Gablehood_front-back_c1535_detail.jpg

Unfortunately I don't have a clear enough image to be able to answer
this question: Is there a round button at the center of the
converging triangles on the black box on the back of her head? I
think I see it, but I'm not sure.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

I can't get the image to show up, but when I made my gable hood for
the Museum of London, I did not see a button. the shape of the
pleats on the box were formed simply by taking a tuck cross wise -
it is a bit lumpy where the pleats cross, and it certainly looked
pretty accurate, according to the Holbein drawing.

Actually, tuxedos started as a form of infomal formal wear, worn at
gentlemen's clubs before 1900. At least that is my understanding.

Speaking of buttons; I'm on the lookout for some specific ones and though
everyone on here might be able to help. They look sort of like a 4 sided
shield button with a tall point in the middle. Here is a little collage I
made of them; hopefully you can see the details well enough to get an idea
of their shape:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a106/A_Dark_Horse/buttons.jpg

Any ideas on where I could get something like that in silver?

Thanks!

Given the front-back c1535 I'm guessing the picture is Holbein's
drawing of an unknown English lady - try this link:
http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/sca/tudor/backsketch.jpgIf you take the url
back to ...tudor/ there's a great portfolio of pictures on this site.

I can see what you mean, but I never saw it as a button before you
suggested it, just the product of four triangles meeting. There are so
few pictures of the back of a gable hood, and with it always being black
it's hard to confirm details!

This is what I remember too. And in the teens you might see a real mix, the
older men in older styles, the young men in tuxes.

Here is what it says on Definitions of the clothing Textile industry:

The American name tuxedo is taken from Tuxedo Park, New York, a private club
of country houses founded by Pierre Lorillard, the tobacco heir. (The town
of Tuxedo and Tuxedo Park themselves were named by the Lenni-Lenape Indians,
who called the largest lake in the area tucseto, meaning either place of the
bear or clear flowing water.)...

Re: [h-cost] English Gable Hood, Holbein image

2007-10-18 Thread Exstock
Looking at my copy of Holbein in England from the Tate, which has a decent
but still too small image of this one, it looks like there's just not enough
detail in the sketch itself to say for sure. There's definitely something
there, but it's just a sort of a v-shape where the lines meet, with shadow
around it suggesting something that sticks out a bit. It could be a lump
where they meet, though that's not the shape that 4-finished-seams-meeting
makes when I do it; it could be a button, though the sketch suggests a
diamond-shaped ...whatever... and a self-fabric diamond-shaped button seems
a bit odd. It could be a covering patch, but in the sketch the ...thingy...
is pretty 3D, and seems to stick out further than a patch would.

Sicne the British Museum (the sketch's home) makes it really difficult to
link to database records:

http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/search_the_collection_database/advanced_search.aspx
then search for Holbein two views and it'll be your only result. Click
on the small then the medium image, and it'll take you to a pretty decent
enlargement.

I just received my Levenger catalog today and found that they are the

Yeah, I thought it might be just a huge book with many links and sources...
well, what I'm looking for, is anything about drafting and patterns. Historical

Do you think it might be helpful for me?

You may also want to have a look at this effigy
http://www.tudoreffigies.co.uk/browse/view.asp?id=66 (the Tudor Effigies
website is back and it has it's own domain) it shows a 3D image of a Gable
hood you can see the back is basically the same (a box covered with 4
triangles) and there's definitely no button on this one.
