Re: [h-cost] Costume related Christmas gifts
M... 8 metres of 52 cm wide new (as in not vintage) unbleached hand woven linen from a wonderful friend. One of the best presents ever. And lots of gold and white damask in a pomegranate pattern, plus some reticella lace (though I bought them for myself from eBay, they arrived with Christmas timeliness). Off topic (and sorry if this has been answered before): is there any way to make the digest not contain two copies of each message? ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

Can I just add that anyone who doesn't have a copy of this marvellous book should really think about getting one as a standard reference if they work on the 16th century, much like Janet Arnold's. I've had my copy for about 8 years now, and it's one of the most useful books I've ever had (and the only good reminder of the ex who bought it for me...). If the house was burning down, I would seriously grab my now- annotated copy as one of the few things I took with me. The more I read it, the more I get out of it and am grateful to the scholarship and care that went into the translation, and making and keeping it available in print. I have a copy of the Spanish reprint, which is interesting for keeping the original format, and for some comments in the introduction, but nowhere near as helpful. Ok, off my soapbox now. Happy New Year to all. We have not authorised any display of Alcega patterns on line either. I have a copy of the original copied from microfilm, complete with waterspots. Unfortunately I loaned it to a friend who hasn't returned it yet. She says she will have it back within a week, if the mail allows. We will see. Re: [h-cost] Costume related Christmas gifts
Aren't we having annual discussion? My only directly costume related gift was a pair of pearl earrings, when I started looking for earrings I was surprised how difficult it was to find something plain, everything seemed to have extra decoration but my sister found pretty much what I wanted (the hook was silver and I would have preferred gold, but it's just a simple shepherd's hook so it doesn't stand out). I was also going to get a pair of shoes I could use for costuming purposes (plain ballet flats work for most of the 1st half of the 19th century) but couldn't find any that fit properly. Re: [h-cost] Costume related Christmas gifts
My family is, apparently, no longer willing to feed my obsession with historic costuming. :-) I received several nice gifts of jewellery and clothing (suitable for office wear) and some lotion, etc. from the Aveda Salon... but not a single book or pattern, or even a gift certificate to Jo-Ann's! The big surprise came a few days before Christmas, when my parents arrived. They walked in carrying a box of old magazines and wondered if I wanted them. I am now the proud owner of bound copies of Godey's Lady's Book from 1856 and January-June 1863, plus loose issues May June 1865 and July 1871, and a bound copy of Peterson's Magazine from 1881. I was stunned! They are all in rather fragile condition with broken spines, pages torn and stained -- and I was distressed to see that someone had cut out many of the articles in the 1856 volume. (My mother couldn't remember which side of the family she inherited them from, or when. Maybe it's better if I don't know!) Also, someone used the back of some of the plates to work on their arithmetic homework but at least it's in pencil. I suppose there are cleaner copies available electronically for all of these volumes but I'm thrilled to think that I have my very own paper copies. I'll be making photocopies of the ballads that appear at the beginning of each volume and I'll probably try to construct some of the accessories... March 1856 has something called a Polka Jacket trimmed with imitation ermine that I find strangely appealing... you have been warned! ;-) Suzanne [who mostly does 15th 16th C. but has started dabbling in the mid-19th C. since moving to Iowa last year] ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
