Yes that's it. And they only have a 1 yard minium now. Although directly across the st you can find handkerchief linen for $4-5 a yard. All I ever make underwear out of. Just look for the going out of business sign. Oh and they will haggel with you, be prepared. Not my favorite part, but if you're a good deal broker and you're buying quantity they'll go down in price. -Robin On Thu, Apr 2, 2009 at 10:53 PM, Saragrace Knauf wickedf...@msn.com wrote: I think this might be the store you are talking about: http://www.graylinelinen.com/ How'd I miss it when I was there? Re: [h-cost] New York fabric shopping
Despite the fact of its popularity, despite the 'tourists,' I have to admit I love Mood. I've never gone in there without finding something delightful, which I can't say about some of the other places in the area. It's mainly because Mood seems to carry more than the usual amount of natural fibre fabrics. Sometimes you have to ask for help finding specific items. I'm a $5/yd kind of person who likes to buy things on sale when I find them and then figure out how to use them. But the prices at Mood are not totally outrageous. For example, a fine silk taffeta was the same price there as it was at Denver Fabrics online ($14/yd), and I nabbed a beautiful semi-sheer cotton/silk blend there last year for $8/yd. That was something I had been looking for in vain on online sites. The wools are plentiful and, while not usually $5/yd at least you know when you buy a worsted twill there you can see what quality you are getting. (As you can tell I've been burned online by the we say it's a worsted wool twill but we really meant it's a cheapo tricotine.) - Hope Robin Betzhold wrote: Same thing with Mood fabrics, well worth seeing but expensive. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] 1940s patterns
This quesstion is actullay about 1937. The childrens theate I work at is doing a play A Thousand Dresses. It's about a polish girl during I believe 1937. Does anyone know what would be worn during that time such as style fabric ex, cotton? thank you for your help. I believe they could help you. They were issued monthly and came with 2 or 3 patterns and had various articles on dress and home economic related things. The patterns were mostly dresses and occasional childrens clothes. I have seen the originals that some of the Simplicity retro reissues are based on up for sale on ebay. I have not seen those two particular patterns. Some of the Simplicity Retro are more inspired by the era, some are actually based on a pattern for that period. Occasionally I search ebay to find the original covers to compare the reissues to. I would like to buy the original vintage pattern but it hasn't been happening. The main difference bet ween vintage and reissues is the different block or sloper they are working from. From the comments I have read, simplicity's fit of reissued vintage pattern is dicier then vogues. Simplicity tends to bit a bit more intepretive. There are some difference between Vogue reissues and originals too but they are not as major. There are som bloggers who have compared the originals to reissues patterns but all the examples I have seen are from the 50s. The skirt in 4044 is very similar to a skirt vogue reissued pattern. I currently have a cat on my lap so can't check . If you are interested in the number I can dig it up later. I would normally move the cat but he is recovering from surgery and I haven't the heart to move him as he is being that much of a sook. [h-cost] In Washington DC the week before CC28
Gentle H-costumers, I'm probably not the only one heading out early for CostumeCon; hopefully I can find some others. I'll be in DC between 22 and 30 April before going to CostumeCon in Baldermur, Merilnd as my family says it. I'm looking for h-costumers who might like to pal around for a weekday downtown, perhaps at the Smithsonian, Textile Museum or an art gallery. I'm looking for people available during the day, since I'll be on vacation. My spouse would rather eat paint than look at old clothes. OTOH, he will happily dance, so if you know of a venue with historic dancing, let us know. We'll pack something to wear. If you want to show us the ropes at Glen Echo in the Spanish Ballroom on Sunday 26 Apr, we'd love to meet up. Off the top of my head, here's some local museums that tend to have things of interest to h-costumers. Happy to take your suggestions, too. I haven't been following this NY shopping thread, since I never go there, but it brings up a question for me. I heard a year or two back, that fabric shopping in the big cities isn't what it used to be. If I take on a new design job I've just been offered, I may have to travel to L.A. to shop for it. I recall someone saying that the garment district doesn't have all the good jobbers it used to. True or not? Re: [h-cost] New York fabric shopping
Greetings-- I'm not sure about LA, but here in Toronto we've probably lost about 1/3 of our good independent fabric stores in the fashion district. For whatever reason, they've been mostly replaced by bead stores. I've also been told that one of our old standbyes, Designer Fabric Outlet (the orange bag store to locals) has reduced significantly its stock of fashion fabrics in favour of home decor. One of my favourite stores moved elsewhere in Toronto off of Queen St. We also used to have a few stores scattered amidst the Chinatown stores, but those are also mostly gone now, too. It's still way better down there than at the local chain stores, but I have definitely found the variety has dropped off a bit.
