Re: [h-cost] Has anyone here beaded garments with real stones

2011-10-04 Thread Lisa A Ashton
Actually, I was talking about sewing on beads, onto a fase of thick wool
felt backed with interfacing. I don't do much jewelry making with
wires, although I have in the past. I am more interested in sewing. But
again, it is by hand and is a bit time consuming, if making a piece that
is really large.

I frequently make large bead-embroidered collars, which are actually
morel ike beaded pictures, with cabochons and seed beads and bugle beads
in various configurations; then I add a 3D component by over-beading on
top of that. I get some interesting effects, and have worked w ith many
different color schemes and found objects, which it from getting dull. I
generally back my large pieces with some heavy taffeta or ultrasuede, and
the small pieces, such as brooches, with leather.

[h-cost] Need help with faux leather color

2011-10-04 Thread Robin Netherton
Not my usual historic, but a materials question that might be answered by
you knowledgeable folks.

I picked up a pair of reddish-brown fashion boots at a resale shop. Not
leather, but they're a good imitation, they fit me perfectly, and they were
cheap. Not till I got home did I discover -- in a better light -- that they
aren't quite the same shade. One boot is noticeably lighter than the other.
The store (Plato's Closet) refused to take them back, although the manager
(who looked to be about age 21) agreed they were defective and said she
shouldn't have bought or sold them in the first place.

In any case, I'd really like to wear these, but not while their color is
mismatched. So, I need a way to either lighten one, or darken the other, or
color them both to match. They don't take shoe polish, and I doubt they'd take
leather dye.

I could, of course, spray-paint them gold or something, but that would defeat
the purpose of having brown Western boots, which was my original need.

No materials tag in the boots, but I found them online here (and a bunch of
other places):

http://www.urbanog.com/Breckelle-Outlaw-81-Buckle-Riding-Knee-High-Boot_109_15972.html
... and the description says man-made leatherette, which isn't very helpful.

Any suggestions? OK if they end up looking dusty or faded, but I'd like to
keep them looking Western.

I've done pearls and garnets. It was a renfaire costume (King) that saw a lot
of use. We didn't dry clean though, we used Frebreeze on the inside, and
occasional gentle water rinse. I think we did end up of using Dryel once.
Everything held up just fine but then garnets are a dark color and I don't
believe change very much. Some stones are heat treated to enchance color so
you could have a problem there. If possible, can you test a couple?

And I strongly agree with the previous advice for sewing these things on :). I
never liked the nylon threads, had trouble with it knotting securely, so I used
quilting thread and a good beeswas, then at least one overhand knot every 2-3
beads. It's been over 20 years on the original costume and never lost a stone.

Please let us know how the citrine's work out, might need to use them sometime
:).

Chances are they got mismatched by fading in the first place, and it's
probably your best bet for trying to match them. I don't think you are going
to find any kind of leather product that will work. It's possible something
like a permanent marker *might* work, but like with any change in color, it
will effect them both the same way, so they will still be different shades.

I'd leave the darker boot out in the sun for a day, compare the color and
repeat until they match.

Well, it's not fading, because the color on the lighter boot is uniform even
on the inner seams and under the straps. But fading is as good a technique as
any, so I've put the darker boot outside today. Only one side can be facing
the sun, so I should be able to tell if it makes any difference by comparing
sides.

If it works, I might just fade them both down quite a bit. Faded is fine.

Well, you could try using shoe polish in brown on one and clear/neutral on
the other.
Or get some leather dye, the stuff they used to sell for dying the soles of
oxfords (I'm dating myself here).
Leatherette suggests plastic--there are spray paints especially made to
adhere to plastic. Try taking two colors and spraying them at the same time
to get a mottled effect. Or spray 2 colors and quickly blend with a brush or
sponge to get a more natural look.
Or wear them as is and if someone notices, say, Well, they came from the
skins of two different Naugas.

I just finished a white/silver brocade horse show shirt for my daughter.
Then I mended a pile of odds/ends. Last winter I cut out a spring coat
for myself, so it was next. I'm about an hour or so from finishing it. It's
a blue and pastel plaid home-spun looking fabric.

I have a whole bolt of flannel sitting here to make my 6'5 son 2 or 3
flannel shirts that have sleeves that are actually long enough.

Then it's back to my daughter who wants another show shirt in black, tan,
red and gold. That is going to be a humdinger of a project. If you want to
see some examples here is a link with a good selection:

http://www.showtimeshowclothing.com/store/20091014220056_20091130105022.html

then it will be my turn again. I want to make a skirt and two pair of dress
pants to coordinate with some jackets I found at a thrift store.

Except for the show shirts, none of it is costume like and there is
nothing historical about them now. Maybe in 50-100 years...

[h-cost] Jewelry Making

I am tempted to take up jewelry making, since I am fascinated by the
colors of stones. I have what is probably an illusion that all I need is
wire, pretty but low-grade semiprecious gems, and skill with pliers. I
have a lot of design ideas. However, I have so much to do thinking of
taking on another hobby feels rather exhausting. How easy is it to do
the make the kind of jewelry that requires wire but not, as far as I can
tell, soldering? I don't really have a workspace for soldering. Seems
kind of toxic for the kitchen table.

Plenty of jewelry work can be done without having to get involved in silver
soldering or torch work. I've dabbled in wire wrap jewelry for years and
never picked up either skill. And the big advantage of that particular
hobby is that your stash takes up so much less space...

[h-cost] Need help with faux leather color

They don't take shoe polish, and I doubt they'd
 take
 leather dye.

I could, of course, spray-paint them gold or something, but that would
 defeat
the purpose of having brown Western boots, which was my original need.

No materials tag in the boots, but I found them online here (and a bunch of
 other places):

 http://www.urbanog.com/Breckelle-Outlaw-81-Buckle-Riding-Knee-High-Boot_109_15972.html
... and the description says man-made leatherette, which isn't very
 helpful.

Any suggestions? OK if they end up looking dusty or faded, but I'd like to
 keep them looking Western.

Well-stocked automobile supply stores at least used to carry specialized
spray paint intended for changing the color of vinyl car seats, so,
designed to stick to faux leather from the get go. The range of colors was
typically limited, but I would expect that brown would be one of the
possible options. I'm guessing that online auto-supply specialists may be
your best bet now.

Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?

2011-10-04 Thread Tig
Mine's wearing a deep red silk loba that desperately needs the hem
finished. I have the complete outfit as worn by Countess Mencia de
Mendoza around 1500 but there are a few finishing touches. The colour
pic of the original portrait is here -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/92578357@N00/sets/72157626571572851/

The yellow dress (as made by a friend who sews far better than I do)
proved to be a bit too yellow so I attempted to dye it with a royal navy
blue. It came out a lovely deep green but alas, with a few tiedyed
patches. It's off to the professionals for a recovery job whilst I
finish the hemming on the loba and the tranzado which just needs
wrapping (the hair tube).

If only I could find time to make the bling to go with it before
November Spring Crown (Spring starts in September and finishes in
November here).

Cheers,

~ Tig

It's a 10 year old Italian (1560's) made from dark blue silk satin covered
with gold machine embrodery that needs repair. I picked up the fabric when
in Buluxie a couple of weeks after Mardi Gras and when the shop owner took
it down from the shelf she accidently hit me with the roll so sold it to me
for 1/3 the price.

Have you looked through those High School Annual websites? You can pull up
the years you want for the areas of the country that you specifically want
to see what the fashions in that time and place.

Ex: South Texas 1976. Boys wore fluffy shirts under the tuxedos. Girls wore
square neck calico floor length gowns with short puffy cap sleeves with
elastic.
