2009-04-26 Thread JAMES OGILVIE

Yes, that's absolutely gorgous just the way it is.

Janet

Got any of this material for sale?

It depends on the material, if you want 100% silk, you pay $32 per yard
(actually per more than yard, one meter is a bit more) and if you want half
silk half rayon, you pay $24 per yard. Half silk half rayon means warp is
 silk and weft is rayon.

Yes, it is $10 per 0.4 square inches. You only pay for the size of the
design that will be repeated on the fabric, such as here:
 http://www.sartor.cz/gallery/pattern.jpg
 In this case you'd pay for 3*7 inches = 21 = $525. This would be a very
large pattern, so the cost will be high. The smaller the pattern, the lower
 the price.

Re: [h-cost] Rabbit !

2009-03-03 Thread JAMES OGILVIE

I had several rabbit coats as my main winter coats during the years I was
living Michigan and Chicago and walking alot. Fur would keep out the wind like
nothing else but I couldn't afford anything better than rabbit. I never had a
shedding problem but rabbit does wear out faster than other furs - after a
couple months, I would have a bald spot on my shoulder where my purse was
rubbing all the fur off. I think rabbit is fine for trimming SCA garments.
Just make sure you can take it off easily - real fur doesn't go in the washing
machine or even to the dry cleaners.

Don't know what this room was used for originally. It is too cold and a bit
damp to work in but we are in Kansas so this is our fail-safe tornado
shelter :). It would have been a root cellar or a storage place to keep
perishable food items in the days before refrigerators. The most likely
thing to be kept there would be root vegetables - so one could have potatos,
carrots, etc. through the winter. It's still a good place to store tender
bulbs, like cannas, if you dig them up every fall. Janet

[h-cost] comfort vs. fashion

2007-09-14 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
Anyone who thinks that people wear clothing for comfort and practicality
should contemplate the wearing of pantihose.

Janet

It is surely interesting to think logically about such a problem, but,
just as you say, we can never rely on it, and, as we all know, people
didn't always act very logically and didn't choose the most comfortable
garments they could. Think of all those corsets and hoop petticoats and
cage crinolines - the latest being worn even by lower-class working women
that would surely need a more practical dress than the bourgeoise and
nobility.

While it's certainly true that some fashions are more inconvenient than
others on a purely practical level, I think that saying that people acted
illogically and chose uncomfortable garments is misleading. We tend to
think that our current fashion is the most logical, comfortable, and
lovely one, but people in the past thought the same thing
So I must agree with Heather that it's dangerous to use modern ideas of
what is comfortable to evaluate historical clothing practices.

could post pictures like this. I have the picture but no easy way to get it

[h-cost] Spanish medieval clothes book

2006-03-13 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
I just got a fantastic new book today, Vestiduras Ricas. It is the catalog
from an exhibit of the extant garments and fabrics that normally live in the
Monasterio de las Huelgas in Spain. I have seen a smaller catalog from the
museum at the monastery but when they mounted an exhibit at the Prado in
Madrid, they went all out with a coffee table size book and all color pictures.

Unfortunately, it is very expensive (~$75.00) but I think it was well worth it.
I got it from http://www.artbooks.com/wc.dll?AB~home~cart=0 , a shop with an
incredible selection of European art books, most expensive. It did take a long
time to get here (this was my Valentine present).

There's a reason I'm called the Evil Book Lady, although usually it's for books
I'm selling.

Most of the clothes in the book are secular, although there are a few
liturgical pieces. There are also textile fragments, pictures of the monastery
and pages from illuminated manuscripts.

Janet

You are a very bad, bad person. [4 books and $200 later] A VERY bad
bad person. And I mean that in the nicest possible way. :)

Re: [h-cost] looking for sources of art

2006-03-08 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
I don't think there is anything quite like the Web Gallery of Art. However,
here are some good art sites.

http://marquise.de/index.html This site won't tell you about the art, but the
blow-ups are fair size and all the pictures are of costume.

http://www.enluminures.culture.fr/ The French have a massive data-base of
manuscript illuminations. The size of the image varies - often detail shots
are available. It can be searched by subject.

http://cgfa.dotsrc.org/index.htmlThis is similar to the Web Gallery of Art
although not as complete.

http://www.bergerfoundation.ch/I haven't used this site much. The image
quality is uneven but has some obscure things.

http://www.abcgallery.com/index.htmlThis is another site I haven't used
much as it doesn't have a big selection in medieval and renaissance art. On
the other hand, their 18th cen. list of artists looks pretty extensive.

[h-cost] costuming Shakespeare

2006-03-08 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
After reading that hysterically funny list THE THINGS I WILL NOT DO WHEN I
DIRECT A SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTION, ON STAGE OR FILM when this post came today on
an SCA list, I thought it could be added to that list.

Buffalo NY is fortunate enough to have Shakespeare in Park in Delaware Park.
Their schedule is always advertised in advance. Once, they advertised
Romeo and Juliet, we decided to make it a 'demo night' We went to the park
in Italian Ren garb well prior to the starting time, we had samples
of period munchies to give away and our jugglers were juggling with whatever
props they were handed.

Now, unbeknownst to everybody, because it was supposed to be a 'big surprize',
RJ was being done in modern clothes that year. So, when the actors arrived
and started climbing on stage, the audience members yelled at the
'misbehaving teenagers' to get off the stage because the play was scheduled
to start soon and the actors were already in garb in the audience! They
thought *we* were the actors! :D :D

Re: [h-cost]was Re:patterns now clothing and shoes

2006-02-25 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
It's the Medieval Conference at Kalamazoo that gives me the most problems.
Every other place I sell books, I'm wearing medieval or Renaissance SCA
clothes, but there modern clothing is all I've ever seen. Some of the
participants (professors who already have tenure?) slum it in jeans and tee
shirts but since there is a lot of professional networking going on, most dress
better than that. Trying to find clothes that look somewhat professional, that
I can work in all day, with variations for unpredictable climatic conditions
(one year it was up to 90 on the first week of May) and that I already own
makes me crazy! It's so much easier to dress in costume!

Amen! I always ask if I should wear Period Attire. It is so much

Can we start a Fashion Trend, wearing our chosen Period clothing day to
  day?

Re: [h-cost] clothing for the reluctant husband

2006-02-23 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
While my S.O. was wearing knee length t-tunics before I ever met him, he won't
wear hose on a bet. However, weight gain plus an unwillingness to buy new
clothes made me realize that, as long as his footwear covers the ankle,
sweatpants in a size or two too small make a good substitute. They definitely
look better than modern dance tights and most sweat pants stretch enough that
they're not uncomfortable. Of course, the shopper has to be vigilant to avoid
stripes and logos and strange looking fabrics but a man won't see anything
unusual about wearing sweatpants, even if they do cling to legs and butt.

2006-02-08 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
Thanks, Annette, for putting that great link to the art work of Carlo Crivelli
in your article on fastenings. http://www.eleanorlebrun.com/closure.htm
Not only have they collected really good reproductions of his works from all
over the world, they also enable close-ups of all the interesting details.
Three other artists (who seem to be followers of his) are also on the site.
Unfortunately, it's all in Italian, sponsored I think by the region of Italy
where he lived and worked, and I can't figure out if there are other artists
hiding there.

I lined my winter cloak with heavy 100% cotton flannel, sold as flannel
chamois. It's warm and soft, shows no signs of pilling and came in various
solid colors. Of course, I don't know who sells it now that JoAnne's has
discontinued it.

Re: [h-cost] medieval quote on underwear

2006-01-14 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
Yes, and I will look for a picture I have seen where there are women
pulling up their skirst to warm their feet/legs at a fire in a room. It
is almost a cut away picture as if to show the scene of the village,
but what is going on inside the buildings as well.

One of the winter calendar pages of the Tres Riches Heures shows women and men
doing this and none of them are wearing any underwear.

Re: [h-cost] This year's calendar selection

2006-01-08 Thread JAMES OGILVIE
While not as useful as The Medieval Woman calendars, there were a couple of
possibilities out there if you didn't wait for the after-New Year sales and
patronized the right bookseller. Pages from the Spinola Hours were reproduced
on 1 calendar and are beautiful examples of squashed bug style illumination.
Pages from the Kennicott Bible, a 1476 Spanish manuscript, were reproduced on
another.

Several years ago, my local newspaper had a piece on BrownTrout Publishing and
how they had achieved success in the calendar business by going for niche
topics and I've thought they would be a good place to try for a People in the
Middle Ages calendar. (Even if they aren't still publishing it, I'm sure
Workman would be inclined to lawsuits if someone else did a Medieval Woman
calendar.) They have a web site, http://www.browntrout.com/index.asp , if
anyone wants to write them.

I like Jacquard products http://www.jacquardproducts.com/ , although I've never

[h-cost] Known World Costume Symposium

I'm sure all the SCA people know about this, but even non-SCA people who are
interested in medieval or renaissance costume would find things to learn at
this event this weekend. It will be in Atchison, Kansas which is near Kansas
City. The website is very badly designed but at least gives the minimum
information: http://www.dunard.org/KnownWorldCostuming/Index.htm
