Wowzers, that WAS a pricey order!

The book I'm reading is Volume 3 of a 7-volume biography of George
Washington written by Douglas Southall Freeman in the late 1940s.
Incredibly fascinating stuff!

Oh, boy, it took some time to scare up all 7 volumes, especially the one
covering the Revolution. But it was well worth the hunt!

I highly, highly recommend this series. It should be required reading
in every American school.

[h-cost] Clothing order sent to London from Virginia in 1759

2013-06-15 Thread Michelle Plumb

Hello, gang.

During my nightly reading I discovered this snippet about a clothing
order sent to London, placed by a well-to-do Virginia planter's wife in
1759:

“Hose and shoes – these of the smallest fives – a black mask, perfume,
six pairs of kid gloves and six of mittens, and a multitude of small
articles.”

“Her particular want was of a negligee gown and coat of salmon-colored
tabby with satin flowers and a cap, handkerchief, tucker and ruffles to
match or blend. These were to be of Brussels or point lace at the stiff
price of 20 Pounds Sterling.”

Interesting, eh?

Oh, by the way, the well-to-do Virginia planter's wife was Martha
Washington.

[h-cost] Help! Really want to copy an outfit from the movie Scrooge

2012-02-06 Thread Michelle Plumb

Hello, all.

I have questions about a beautiful outfit I saw in the 1970 version of
the movie “Scrooge”.
The lovely Edith Evans portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past, and enters
so beautifully dressed!

I have to copy it.

I know, it's Hollywood (okay, Shepperton), but it's just so lovely I'm
willing to give up the authenticity factor.

I managed to get some still photos off the DVD. They're on my Flickr site:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24767089@N06/sets/72157629192291315/

Now, the questions.
The book was published in 1843, but doesn't give Scrooge's age. That
makes it very hard to guess what year the Ghost of Christmas Past
originates. Scrooge was a little boy, but how many years have passed?

Ms. Evans appears to be wearing a bronze or green silk gown and a
pannier, with a red wool overcoat or overdress with a peplum.

What would the gown underneath have looked like?

Am I even close in my guesses of what I'm seeing?
Thanks,
Michelle

2010-11-11 Thread Michelle Plumb
Well gang, I went to Macy's fur vault on Monday and lucked out. Their
furrier specialist from Chicago was available on site today, and was
happy to look my fur pieces over.

Here are the pictures again:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24767...@n06/sets/72157625297457400/
or
http://tinyurl.com/2cc3hdz

The light-colored piece is Stone Marten, and the darker piece made of
the smaller critters is Palm Marten.

He said they were both in good shape, and perfect for re-purposing.

Now that I know what I'm dealing with, is there anyone out there who
would like one or more of these for re-purposing? I don't want to
charge as much as the furrier suggested, so how about $25 for the Stone
Marten and $20 for the Palm Marten?

[h-cost] Help identifying 2 fur pieces.

2010-11-03 Thread Michelle Plumb

As suggested, I measured both fur pieces.
The lighter one appears to be two critters attached at the center. Each
piece measures 19x4.
I measured several of the darker ones, and they are all about 16x3, nose
to tail-tip.

Do any of you reenactors out there have a use for these? I don't do fur
myself, but I'm certainly not going to waste perfectly good mystery fur!
It would probably make very pretty trim on something.

Besides, if I sell them maybe I can buy some swell wool or something. LOL

[h-cost] What would my ancestor have worn?

2010-08-22 Thread Michelle Plumb

Hello, everyone. A cousin of mine is tracing the family tree and hit
the jackpot. I'm a direct descendant of the builders of this manor:

http://www.padley.catholicweb.com/

My ancestor is Joan Padley, and she lived in the 14th century. I'd love
to know how Joan would have been dressed, but I'm not quite certain
how she places on the socioeconomic scale of the times.

Here's some of the information from the website:
The manor house at Upper Padley was built in the late 13th and early
14th centuries. It is situated on the north bank of the River Derwent,
within a mile of Grindleford Bridge. The original owners came from
Normandy with William the Conqueror. Their family name was De Bernac.
They were given the lands of Padley, Grindleford and Hathersage by
William for services rendered. They settled in Upper Padley, where
their descendants started to build. They eventually changed their name
to Padley. When the sole heiress, Joan Padley married Robert Eyre of
Highlow, there was already a fair sized manor house. Robert Joan
extended the buildings including the gatehouse.

I would be grateful for any help. Thanks! Michelle

[h-cost] An interesting book find.

2006-08-17 Thread Michelle Plumb

Hello, all.

My spinning guild had its annual garage sale Saturday. You never know
what you're going to find there.

I dove into a pile of books looking for treasure, and came up with
something interesting:

English Domestic Needlework of the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries, by
Preston Remington, curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, published
in 1945.

All the photos are black and white, but the detail is very good. The
verbal descriptions fill in the blanks. And it only cost me 2 dollars.

I've been contemplating a 1680s-ish gown for a while, and there is a
stunning example in the book:

Late 17th century gray wool with brown and blue striped edged in red.
Embroidered throughout in silver-gilt thread.

The gown in complete, and the closeup of the embroidery is all the
information I need. It's a monumental embroidery task, but would be
well worth the effort.
