[h-cost] Christmas Gift Exchange

2007-01-02 Thread Kathy Page
Ha! Finally! my gift arrived!

Apparently the description on the declaration wasn't convincing enough
customs felt the need to open the package, so it was hung up at Canada Border
Services Agency this whole time.
Kelly Dorman sent me a beaded hat pin - it's just lovely! I had started my
costuming days in the Victorian and Edwardian era, so I have a wonderful HUGE
Victorian picture hat this will be perfect with! It's just the right colours
for it too! Just in time to be photographed with my entire collection end of
this week. I'm finally getting around to making a real portfolio.

Very worth the wait. :-D Thank you!

It's a mill-end shop, so the stock varies, but he has gorgeous

and a great variety of trims. (Plus of course cotton prints,
sequinned and embroidered fancy fabrics, fake furs, muslin in every
width known to wo/man, etc. etc.) Prices are very good generally. I
just succumbed to 3 yards of upholstery fabric in what the Crayola
crayon company used to call Prussian blue with a brocade design of
squares filled with Jacobean-style flowers alternating with a lattice
pattern, tones of gold and rose. Sixty inches wide. $10 a yard. I
didn't ask re fiber content, but it's got a very good hand and soft
sheen--and the back, being primarily those rose tones, is almost
pretty enough to show off on its own. Putting this on my livingroom
futon would upgrade my whole home--but maybe I'll upholster MYSELF in
it rather than my couch! Also got a yard of Czech rhinestone

The shop is maybe a mile (maybe less) straight down from the Main

I received, in such good time that I had to sit on my hands to resist
opening early, a package of lovely things from the National Gallery
of Victoria in Melbourne:

-a catalogue raisonné of their Dürer collection (one of my FAVORITE
artists of all time!)
-a gorgeous same of the exhibit Everlasting: The Flower in Fashion
and Textiles (fabric, lace, and beautiful garments)

-three postcards of eighteenth-century family portraits
-a stationery card with Antonis Mor's Portrait of a Lady (c. 1555-60)

Some of the plays I've directed and costumed are from these periods,
so the illustrations are of particular interest.

Thanks so much to Sharon Nevin.

What did everyone else get?

Re: [h-cost] Christmas gift exchange

2006-12-24 Thread Robin Netherton

And as long as we're now posting ...

My exchange partner picked up on two of the things I mentioned that I
collect, and sent me (1) a wonderful brochure from a National Gallery show
on 15th c. Flemish art that I am missing (it's on till Feb. 4, 2007), and
(2) a jigsaw puzzle of a page from the Lindisfarne Gospels! I love them
both.

What did everyone else get?

I trust the very light and fluffy package I sent has arrived to its
recipient ... I will let her post on her own.

I received my h-costume gift and it's very nice. My recipient is
overseas and I mailed her package at what I thought was a very early
date, but the post office was somewhat dubious its receipt on time.
Apparently the overseas mail rush starts much earlier then the domestic one.

I received a tatting shuttle and some thread, which was a good gift
choice, since tatting was one of the things I've always meant to try but
haven't gotten around to.

Greetings--

I literally waited until just now to open mine, since other than some
family gifts tomorrow it will be my only on Christmas Christmas gift
(due to an early shopping trip this year)--

And got some very cool things! Enclosed in a nice scrap of pale green
silk was a blackworked needlebook on linen with silk thread (and a cat
design), two real 16th-17th century pins, and a handmade needle! Very
very nifty (and appropriate, given my periods of interest and small herd
of tabby cats).

Life is good. Have a great holiday, everyone!

Thanks Lalah I got mine a number of days ago. I got busy with all the
holiday stuff and forgot to let you know I received it. Sorry.
I got a book by JOhn Peacock---fashion sourcebooks titled the 1920's. It
has 295 illustrations. It is lovely.

[h-cost] Christmas gift exchange

2006-12-23 Thread Lavolta Press
I want Dawn to set up a post-Christmas gift exchange! Possibly with
anonymous donors . . . I opened some gifts from a relative early and,
although I'm sure there is someone who would love a pinkish mauve
feather boa with some charcoal gray striped tips, it's isn't me.
