RE: [h-cost] off topic DVD codes

2006-05-17 Thread Anne Moeller
My niece and her husband live in Switzerland. They are constantly ordering
DVDs from Amazon.com and having them sent to me (in Virginia). I then send
them on to Switzerland. They have no trouble playing them on either of
their machines.

Re: [h-cost] off topic DVD codes

2006-05-16 Thread Kristin

It's my understanding that you would need a special dvd player that can play
the various codes. DVDs are coded by region, just like there are various
types of vcr tapes and players (PAL, NTSC, and the version they use in
France).

It's worth doing some research... even for myself... as I'll be in Germany
this summer and would like to bring back a couple of movies (and be able to
watch them).

DVD region codes and PAL/NTSC/etc formatting are _not_ the same thing.
PAL/NTSC are different TV picture formats used in different parts of the
world. They serve no special purpose; they're just different. DVD
region codes are a way of attempting to enforce DVD manufacturers'
distribution plans (by making discs unplayable outside their intended
zone) and, supposedly, preventing piracy. This is purely a locking
mechanism, _not_ a difference in disc format.

Anyway.
It's possible that your DVD player can play all zones. It's also
possible that there's a hack available to unlock your DVD player-- if
you can unlock the player, you'll be able to play discs from other zones. .

There should be a help desk address with the instructions that came
with the player. Try contacting them to find out. (Or see if it says
in the handbook?)

I bought one a player, very cheaply, that plays all zones, and we
have another that just plays European ones. These are Zone 2, which I
suspect is what you are. You will find this on the back of each
DVD. But you will need to know if your player is multi zone.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: [h-cost] off topic DVD codes

2006-05-16 Thread Chiara Francesca
I ran into this a couple of times.

The coding is sometimes specific to the region of the world you live
in.

* Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada
* Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa,
Greenland
* Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong
* Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New
Zealand, Pacific Islands, Caribbean
* Region 5 - Russia (okay, former Russia), Eastern Europe, India,
most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia
* Region 6 - China

Most of the DVD's will have text on the back of the packaging that
it is for a specific region or you will see a globe with the number
superimposed on it. It will be very obvious on there what you have.

If you are purchasing sight unseen you will have to ask the seller
what region it is specific to before you make your final purchase.

I currently own a very nice copy of Harry Potter and the
Philosopher's Stone. As you can tell from the title ... it is not
for my region. :)

Yes, My David Attenburough nature shows [which I love] came from the UK
because you can't get them here in Americaso they are Zone 2. My DVD player
only plays Zone 1. But I can watch them on my computer. I'm still thinking of
getting a player that plays any zone.

AAh that would be a solution, i can play all DVD´s on my computer cant
i?
Thanks a lot for that solution, i would not mind if i only could watch it on
the puter.
Its because i found a place that had the version with Teatre du Solleil
about Mollieres life, and there are many other historical costume dramas
available, like Quills, wich i never did see and so on.

Thanks Albertcat...

My recommendation? DVD players are cheap and relatively light. Get a cheap
one and have a friend from the US ship it to you, that way you will be covered,
instead of trying to figure out DVD coding. Someone on the East Coast could
probably get it to you cheaper than I could, but if you want me to track down a
cheap WalMart model and shipping, let me know.

You can also try shopping at Amazon.ca (Canada) That's
where my Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came
from. Both Region 1 *and* with the original title.

I agree with Suzi - it should tell you in the manual that came with your player if it plays 'all regions'. If you don't have the manual try phoning the company that makes it to find out (and yes, like Adele said you will need to find out if it can play PAL and NTSC dvds too).

Actually, the issue there is whether your TV can display both modes.
Sets made in the last ten years often can, but you need to check the
manual to be sure.
