Re: [h-cost] JC Superstar and Speedos

2008-06-25 Thread Gilbert
I remember too many Canadian men wandering around in tiny Speedos as they
wended their way south to Old Orchard Beach in the '70's. Thank you for
reminding me of this bewildering childhood memory!

I know the subject header looks funny! Tonight I watched Jesus Christ
Superstar, On Demand. During JC's visit to Herod, two men with blonde wigs
in the chorus were wearing what appears to be tiny white Speedos. I am not
sure but there may have been ties at the hips, which could have been
women's bikini bottoms. Were Speedos that small in 1973 for men? If not,
when did men's Speedos become bikini sized?

Oh (he said with eyes watering), they were that tight back then.

Also, Jockey had a pair of underwear with little more than the elastic strap at
the hip...could it have been that?

Interestingly, the costume designer of JC Superstar is Yvonne Blake, I
believe. She designed one of the BEST costume extravaganzas of the 70's:
Three
Musketeers [and of course Four Musketeers too since they were
conceived as one film during filming]. Y'know, the one with Michael York, and
Raquel
Welch and...everybody else in Hollywood. Still the best telling of the story
and the best costumes for it to date. [Raquel refused to wear a corset with a
busk, so her gowns were designed by someone else, but even though her
construction and silhouette are not great, the designs themselves are not
terrible.] Geraldine Chaplin wears one of those daisy petal collars in one
scene and
it doesn't look foolish at all. How did they do THAT? The Ball scene is all
white and silver, and the scene at the end of the 1st film, where d'Artagnan
becomes a musketeer is all in black and gold. Just fantastically beautiful.

She's done a lot of good work. I first noticed her name on Robin and Marian,
which had far better costume for medieval style than most films I've seen
before or since. Interestingly, I first saw that movie as a double feature
with Nicholas and Alexandra -- another of Blake's works. I just looked her
up on IMDB and was surprised to see just how many films she's done, and how
broad a range:

I'm generally a lurker, but I can chime in here from personal experience. I
was on a swim team as a kid and it was actually around that time -- and yes,
the speedos (which have earned a bad rap due to their abuse!) were always
small! They were also baggy in those pre-lycra days. Now -- were they that
tiny? Probably not for competitive swimming, but if you look at yummy Mark
Spitz in 1976 you can see some small speedos.
Did Rudi Gernreich have anything to do with the tiny male swimsuit, I
wonder? I know he did women's things and perhaps some of the things were
gender neutral.

Oooo, and she did Flesh and Blood! Another historic costume goody. I
love the footsy-under-the-table scene :).

Thanks for the link Robin.

They were women's bikini bottoms. The whole chorus in that scene was in
bad drag.
