[HCDX] United Nations to issue stamps for World Radio Day (Feb 15th)

2013-02-07 Thread Bob Combs
Hello all.

I don't know if there are any stamp collectors in this group, but I
came across information that the United Nations will issue six new
stamps (radio related-see photo) for World Radio Day 2013. 2 will be
from New York, 2 from Geneva, and the last 2 from Wein (Austria). I
can give out costs and mailing info for those interested in getting
them. They will be for sale through the UN Postal Administration in
New York. For those not aware, a country issuing stamps dealing with
any form of radio is considered rare in todays internet generation.

Re: [HCDX] Strange ITU country symbol changes

2011-10-04 Thread Bob Combs
The new codes you are referring to came from an ISO 3166-1 document.
ISO stands for Internartioanl Organization for Standardization and was
set up to define arbitrary systems.

The codes you mention were actually created in 1974 and modified until
the current ISO 3166-1 listing.

I would assume that ITU is fibnally getting with the times and
upgrading their designations to match the rest of the world.

When you take a look at this list today, you will find NLD and BGR
taken back to HOL and BUL and Myanmar has got another new symbol:
 MYA.

In fact there exist two lists (!!!):

The first list does not contain Netherlands Caribbean !

So which one is valid actually and what we should think about the
changes changed again? (Or have I missed something?)

[HCDX] Broadcast schedule

2009-04-19 Thread Bob Combs
A year or so I asked if anyone knew of a schedule of SW Boradcast stations

So, does anyone know of a broadcast schedule by freq (that lists transmitter

With the freq shifting going on on 40 meters I am lost!

[HCDX] Loggings and other things

2009-01-02 Thread Bob Combs
This morning between 1500-1600 GMT I was listening to what I assume is Radio
Russia (Moscow transmitter) in Russianon 7270 KHz. I did not hear the
standard ID but can only assume it was their transmissions. Signal levels
were 55545 here into Central New Mexico. When their transmission left the
air (or they changed antenna loading for another direction) I heard VOA in
English coming in (34543). The last listing I had showed that as originating
from Germany, but not at that time. There were a couple of other stations in
the background, but not logable for content here.

I don't get on the SW bands as much as I should, maybe 2009 will change
this?

Anyway, Best of DX to all on the list and hope your 2009 brings you the rare
SW station you have been dearching for.

[HCDX] Loggings and other things.. Corrected

2009-01-02 Thread Bob Combs
January 2, 2009
It appears that what I was indeed logging this morning from 1500 GMT to 1615
GMT was NOT what I previously reported.
I was hearing Radio Liberty on 7270, as the ID Govorit Radio Svoboda was
heard at the end of the 1500-1600 transmission
block. At 1601 GMT I did hear a very reduced level English ID of Voice of
America (usual male announcer). It appears that the transmitter phasing was
shifted to a new target area at 1600 GMT, hense the loss of signal levels.

Sorry for my mis-information in the earlier post. I am not correct (I
think).

In 2007, to those listeners sending in particularly useful reports
for La Voz de tu Conciencia and Marfil estéreo, 6010 and 5910 kHz,
there will be, not only a QSL-card, but also a CD containing music

[HCDX] question

2007-01-01 Thread Bob Combs
First of all, Happy New Year to all on the group.

Secondly, I seem to have misplaced a web site. If I recall there was a site
that listed all shortwave transmissions

that could be sorted by time, frequency, or language. Could one of you
refresh my memory as to where it may be? Thanks.

Thirdly, I usually don't do this, but I have made a New Years resolution to
get actively back on the SW bands and try to get

as many QSL cards (verifications) from the SW stations this year as
possible. With stations dropping like flies in winter,

I should probably get them while the getting is good.

Anyway, thanks for the help and I wish all of you great DX in the coming
year.

summation is that:

1.
2. 20+ years ago they verified
3. If I am going to get a response I need to try to have my mail
forwarded from an overseas address

So, I guess I will try the second method and see what happens (it will
probably get me on some sort of list however, but I suppose it wouldn't be
the first time!).

It would make an interesting experiment to have a bunch of people send
reports from the US and nother bunch from the US use

relay mail drops and see what the totals were. But that would be work! Ha!.
Thanks again. Would be nice to get a reply out of them

before I die!

Re: [HCDX] QSL Info Needed

2005-08-08 Thread Bob Combs
As far as Globe Wireless goes, I believe the lady that was answering reports
(on her own time)
got inundated with reports, and since her main job was in accounting, I
guess she just got tired of doing it, perhaps again someday.
As far as AFRTS goes, they never were big USA QSLers. If you were out of
country or military you have a great chance of getting a card. Other than
that, good luck. Do they not respond on email requests either? It has been a
few years since my last report to them.

[HCDX] QSL

2004-06-12 Thread Bob Combs
Received (after 2 years) a VERY nice QSL certificate from WWRB, 5.085 MHz, for
standard reception report and stamp. Address: WWRB, Box 7, Manchester, TN 37349.
Certificate says that a new set of Gold seal(s) will be issued for each additional
report (up to one set of seals per week). I assume the SWL would then put them on the
certificate. Very nice idea!

Re: [HCDX] Re:WWW.FREETRANSLATION.COM

2004-02-01 Thread Bob Combs
Two people do NOT make up the expert advisory council. I can likely
hold my own against the experienced end of the game as well as anyone. I
have been a serious SWL and DXer since 1965. I have tried all the tricks
of the trade, as well as a few that I thought up myself. Some with a lot of
success, some with no success. The problem, as I see it is NOT in the
report, but in the recipient of the report.
Whereas, I do not dispute the fact that someone who can speak/write a
language other than English can certainly do a better job at translating
something than a computer can, we
who do not know such people, do the best we can. If this includes using a
free computer site to see if it increases the return rate on QSL requests,
then I see no problem. If the first attempt doesn't work, that is what the
follow-up reports are all about.
In today's world, and correct me if I am wrong, someone someplace in a
broadcasting station can speak/read English, maybe not fluently, but
certainly enough to get the concept of the letter. I would venture a guess
that they all know what a reception report is and what they are expected
to do with it, which in some cases is throwing the fool thing away and be
done with it.
When writing to a station and asking for a QSL card or letter of
verification, language
is not the key, but just an aid in executing your request. If an individual
wants to take the time to write a letter in another language other than his
or her own national language, then they are doing it as a courtesy to the
person on the other end.
The percentage of obtaining a QSL card or letter (this does NOT take
into account e-mail verifications) is probably close to the same whether you
use your native language (English in my case) or a language other than your
own. To restate an earlier point, the problem is NOT the report, but the
person receiving it. Some like to play the game, others don't. Case in
point: If I send a report to a local radio station, be it AM or SW, do you
really think the
engineer cares? More than likely not. He may (or may not) send a QSL card as
a final
courtesy of the exchange of information, even though it is as useless to
him/her as adding more sand to a desert. I have gotten letters back from DX
stations that basically state that the engineers no longer NEED reception
reports from listeners, as their information comes from the professionals
that do this around the world.
Now, as to acknowledge your reference to the other organization that
has this information (it is believed) somewhere on their website or within
the confines of their clubdom, that is probably true and if someone wants
to take the time to research it fine.
I have simply suggested that HCDX as a group can do the same thing as we
have a very diverse membership. We have a web page, which the webmaster has
already agreed to set up a page where we can set up the same thing, so why
not take advantage of it? Duplication NEVER hurt anyone, and in many cases
it improves the previous attempts.
What's the problem?

No one has said they are good or even passable. There's no maybe at this
point, unless you have received some other feedback?

In spite of your last paragraph, you have received a positive suggestion
that you did not acknowledge. I gave the name of a DX club that has
already
done what you suggest - they have created reception reports in various

The www.freetranslation.com is certainly not the absolute translator of

it
does give a resonable attempt at

English is one of the hardest languages in the world to understand due to
the many meanings of sound-alike words!). NOTE: I have used the

[HCDX] Logging?

2004-01-03 Thread Bob Combs

This morning I logged a station on 7270 KHz between 1417 and 1508 UTC
Language unknown, likely Malaysian.
Program musical selections, with announcer talk in between songs. Female
ID (maybe).
Source: Probably RTV Sarawak
Problem: It did not sign off at 1500 per information on most lists I
have seen.
QRM: at 1503 a middle eastern/eastern horn type music station came up on
frequency with no ID and dominated the frequency.
Any help on this to verify RTV Sarawak was station?
Thanks.

Yes.Radio Japan on 6110 KHz is a relay transmission from Radio Canada's Sackville

came the station ID for Radio Canada International!!! (Woman's voice, a

 Can anybody explain this??

switch to emergency power and stay on during the outage?

As I type, just after 1 PM eastern (1700 UTC), I can't hear CHU at all. But
that's likely due to propagation, as I can't hear WWV on 5000 or 1, and
 reception is poor on 15000.

Mike caught your logs today on HCDX.

I spent an hour at the radio tonight (17th Aug, 06.00) and despite 6160
Canadians coming in well no time signals on 7335 and 14670 could be heard.
Normally pretty regular here. Would they have been affected by the black
  out?

Caught 1620 WDHP co channel with I think WATW . The latter was a coast to

  was on 1620.

There seems to be a Spanish voice station, broadcasting music and voice

pirate broadcast of some form
as I doubt any country would authorize that freq for a broadcast

[HCDX] RE: Eqsl's

2003-07-14 Thread Bob Combs
Just wanted to put in my two cents on the subject. I agree with the
first poster, that the piece of paper received through the mail is the
BEST form of QSL's to receive. But, as pointed out in another post, a
lot of stations don't have the time (staff) to compete ones request. I
guess we should just go with what works, and be happy we can get a reply
any more, as a LOT of stations aren't even bothering to reply lately.
In the case of mentioned Radio Farda, yes I did get the (proposed
automated) standard
reply, but they still haven't responded via the mail for reports to the
adresses given in various places and a letter direct to the transmitter
site. So, since they attach your email to the automated responce, I
would have to say it is a verification (dirty as it may be!).
I am still waiting for the legal way on Radio Free Asia, and Radio Free
Afghanistan, even though I have an automated verification from the
transmitter site on those two as well.
Oh well, we do what we can do.

Are any of you getting a wide band sweep pulse (1.5 second between

For those of you who have never heard a sweep it sounds like a clock
tick where ever you are.

Just curious if this is a US wide thing or a local experiment? Thanks.

Also got in a nice letter from FUF, Martinique. Full data UTE report in

stations still responding to SWL requests.

Now, if I can ever get those replies from the Central and South American
