[HCDX] United Nations to issue stamps for World Radio Day (Feb 15th)
Hello all. I don't know if there are any stamp collectors in this group, but I came across information that the United Nations will issue six new stamps (radio related-see photo) for World Radio Day 2013. 2 will be from New York, 2 from Geneva, and the last 2 from Wein (Austria). I can give out costs and mailing info for those interested in getting them. They will be for sale through the UN Postal Administration in New York. For those not aware, a country issuing stamps dealing with any form of radio is considered rare in todays internet generation. Re: [HCDX] Strange ITU country symbol changes
The new codes you are referring to came from an ISO 3166-1 document. ISO stands for Internartioanl Organization for Standardization and was set up to define arbitrary systems. The codes you mention were actually created in 1974 and modified until the current ISO 3166-1 listing. I would assume that ITU is fibnally getting with the times and upgrading their designations to match the rest of the world. [HCDX] Loggings and other things
This morning between 1500-1600 GMT I was listening to what I assume is Radio Russia (Moscow transmitter) in Russianon 7270 KHz. I did not hear the standard ID but can only assume it was their transmissions. Signal levels were 55545 here into Central New Mexico. When their transmission left the air (or they changed antenna loading for another direction) I heard VOA in English coming in (34543). The last listing I had showed that as originating from Germany, but not at that time. There were a couple of other stations in the background, but not logable for content here. I don't get on the SW bands as much as I should, maybe 2009 will change this? Anyway, Best of DX to all on the list and hope your 2009 brings you the rare SW station you have been dearching for. [HCDX] Loggings and other things.. Corrected
January 2, 2009 It appears that what I was indeed logging this morning from 1500 GMT to 1615 GMT was NOT what I previously reported. I was hearing Radio Liberty on 7270, as the ID Govorit Radio Svoboda was heard at the end of the 1500-1600 transmission block. At 1601 GMT I did hear a very reduced level English ID of Voice of America (usual male announcer). It appears that the transmitter phasing was shifted to a new target area at 1600 GMT, hense the loss of signal levels. Sorry for my mis-information in the earlier post. I am not correct (I think). First of all, Happy New Year to all on the group. Secondly, I seem to have misplaced a web site. If I recall there was a site that listed all shortwave transmissions that could be sorted by time, frequency, or language. Could one of you refresh my memory as to where it may be? Thanks. Thirdly, I usually don't do this, but I have made a New Years resolution to get actively back on the SW bands and try to get as many QSL cards (verifications) from the SW stations this year as possible. With stations dropping like flies in winter, I should probably get them while the getting is good. Anyway, thanks for the help and I wish all of you great DX in the coming year. [HCDX] QSL
Received (after 2 years) a VERY nice QSL certificate from WWRB, 5.085 MHz, for standard reception report and stamp. Address: WWRB, Box 7, Manchester, TN 37349. Certificate says that a new set of Gold seal(s) will be issued for each additional report (up to one set of seals per week). I assume the SWL would then put them on the certificate. Very nice idea! Re: [HCDX] Re:WWW.FREETRANSLATION.COM
Two people do NOT make up the expert advisory council. I can likely hold my own against the experienced end of the game as well as anyone. I have been a serious SWL and DXer since 1965. I have tried all the tricks of the trade, as well as a few that I thought up myself. Some with a lot of success, some with no success. The problem, as I see it is NOT in the report, but in the recipient of the report. Whereas, I do not dispute the fact that someone who can speak/write a language other than English can certainly do a better job at translating something than a computer can, we who do not know such people, do the best we can. If this includes using a free computer site to see if it increases the return rate on QSL requests, then I see no problem. If the first attempt doesn't work, that is what the follow-up reports are all about. In today's world, and correct me if I am wrong, someone someplace in a broadcasting station can speak/read English, maybe not fluently, but certainly enough to get the concept of the letter. I would venture a guess that they all know what a reception report is and what they are expected to do with it, which in some cases is throwing the fool thing away and be done with it. When writing to a station and asking for a QSL card or letter of verification, language is not the key, but just an aid in executing your request. If an individual wants to take the time to write a letter in another language other than his or her own national language, then they are doing it as a courtesy to the person on the other end. The percentage of obtaining a QSL card or letter (this does NOT take into account e-mail verifications) is probably close to the same whether you use your native language (English in my case) or a language other than your own. To restate an earlier point, the problem is NOT the report, but the person receiving it. Some like to play the game, others don't. Case in point: If I send a report to a local radio station, be it AM or SW, do you really think the engineer cares? More than likely not. He may (or may not) send a QSL card as a final courtesy of the exchange of information, even though it is as useless to him/her as adding more sand to a desert. I have gotten letters back from DX stations that basically state that the engineers no longer NEED reception reports from listeners, as their information comes from the professionals that do this around the world. Now, as to acknowledge your reference to the other organization that has this information (it is believed) somewhere on their website or within the confines of their clubdom, that is probably true and if someone wants to take the time to research it fine. I have simply suggested that HCDX as a group can do the same thing as we have a very diverse membership. We have a web page, which the webmaster has already agreed to set up a page where we can set up the same thing, so why not take advantage of it? Duplication NEVER hurt anyone, and in many cases it improves the previous attempts. What's the problem? [HCDX] 10 MHz Pirate QRM
There seems to be a Spanish voice station, broadcasting music and voice (unable to secure ID) that comes in most evenings (local) around 0200 UTC till ? on 10MHZ interfering with WWV/WWVH. I can only assume it is a pirate broadcast of some form as I doubt any country would authorize that freq for a broadcast station. [HCDX] RE: Eqsl's
Just wanted to put in my two cents on the subject. I agree with the first poster, that the piece of paper received through the mail is the BEST form of QSL's to receive. But, as pointed out in another post, a lot of stations don't have the time (staff) to compete ones request. I guess we should just go with what works, and be happy we can get a reply any more, as a LOT of stations aren't even bothering to reply lately. In the case of mentioned Radio Farda, yes I did get the (proposed automated) standard reply, but they still haven't responded via the mail for reports to the adresses given in various places and a letter direct to the transmitter site. So, since they attach your email to the automated responce, I would have to say it is a verification (dirty as it may be!). I am still waiting for the legal way on Radio Free Asia, and Radio Free Afghanistan, even though I have an automated verification from the transmitter site on those two as well. Oh well, we do what we can do. Bob Combs, KCA6RC New Mexico, USA ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Sweep Frequency
Are any of you getting a wide band sweep pulse (1.5 second between ticks) across a large portion of the HF spectrum tonight? I seem to be hearing it from around 8.3MHz to around 24.5 MHz. For those of you who have never heard a sweep it sounds like a clock tick where ever you are. Just curious if this is a US wide thing or a local experiment? Thanks. [HCDX] Verifications
Got in a nice card from Radio Nederlands (full data, Flevoland transmitter). It is Card 3 of a series. 2 month reply. Details really not important for this post. Was just glad to see they are at least still sending out cards (with their pending governmental problems). Also got in a nice letter from FUF, Martinique. Full data UTE report in 1 month for US $2.00 return postage. Again, good to see a few old stations still responding to SWL requests. Now, if I can ever get those replies from the Central and South American stations. Bob Combs, KCA6RC New Mexico ---[Start Commercial]- World Radio TV Handbook 2003 is out! [HCDX] Radio Jordan ...Will try again....
Logged Radio Jordan (11690) this morning. I have tried to get a verification from these guys over the past 10 years, but no luck. I will try again. Any of you had luck with these guys? I did like their pop music programming which appears to be a simo of their FM stations broadcast (or at least they IDed using the FM freq after the news at the top of the hour).
