[HCDX] Ian McFarlands birthday

2023-07-16 Thread R. Colin Newell
Ian celebrates his birthday this week!
As many of you know, Ian had a great career with Radio Canada International.

Living a quiet retirement in Duncan, B.C., Ian remains active in the community.

My wife and I are having lunch with him next weekend. Please send along your
birthday wishes and I’ll pass them along.

[HCDX] Tribute to Ian McFarland

2021-07-30 Thread R. Colin Newell

Radio Canada International’s former voice of the nation, Ian McFarland, lives
the quiet and humble life of a widower on Southern Vancouver Island, near
Duncan, British Columbia. To many of us, Ian’s voice guided us through some of
the greatest times in shortwave history and into the more troubled and meager
phases of the medium.

I, for one, at the impressionable age of 13 composed my first reception reports
to RCI in the 1970’s - and felt, like many, that the good times could never
end. Times did change, but I’ll always remember the salad days of International
broadcasting - and Ian’s tireless dedication and contributions to our seemingly
endless selection of content on the dial.

Please join me in acknowledging Ian McFarlands contribution to the world of
radio. Please send your comments and well wishes to me, Colin, at
rnew...@shaw.ca and I will add them to a giant greeting card in time for his
next birthday.

Now in his 80’s I think Ian will appreciate the gesture… legends of radio: may
they never be forgotten.

[HCDX] CRI DRM snippet from the Test KiwiWebSDR on Haida Gwaii

2020-11-17 Thread R. Colin Newell
As part of the team of Walter Salmaniw, Nick Hall-Patch
Mike Cherry and yours truly - we are testing a Kiwi WebSDR
on the Haida Gwaii -- Queen Charlotte Islands
with a 750' BOG favoring N.W. for dawn medium wave TP DX,
the radio is at a very quiet location and is particularly favorable for
sleuthing out Trans-Pacifics and shortwave parallels.

For medium wave enthusiasts who are interested in
checking out the radio, please send me a note off list.

The Kiwi is completely stripped down in terms of
extensions as the unit is in complete isolation -- unattended
as it were; meaning no DRM, no WSPR, no Tdoa, nothing
only the basic modes.

Our goal is to see how long a Kiwi will run with zero human contact and
interaction.

[HCDX] Live DX spotter / chat system *show of hands*

2019-03-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
Last week someone posted a "wouldn't it be great if we had a
live DX spotter chat window web site 100% dedicated to SWBCing
and/or MW DXing ?"

You know, a place where you could quickly sign in and post an alert that
you're hearing HCJB on 9560 khz or Voice of the Voyager on 6160 khz...
or there is a great TA opening to the West Coast...

Show of hands: Who would use a system like this?

I have some free server space and some ideas about domain names that could
be fun...

Anyway... hands!?

[HCDX] Best wishes for Ian McFarland

2018-09-14 Thread R. Colin Newell
As many of you may know, Ian McFarland was "the guy" on Radio Canada
International in the 1970's and 1980's - DX Digest - and even on NHK for a
couple of years.

He is currently "under the weather" and recovering in Hospital after back
surgery.

Feel free to pass me any thoughts and best wishes and I will forward them
to him on a giant greeting/get well card.

Please forward this on to other DX lists if you guys/gals are so inclined.

Thank you everyone!

[HCDX] Tech notes - CISCO router RFI

2018-07-18 Thread R. Colin Newell

Chinese made switching power supply for the DPC3825 all-in-one WiFi Cisco

sensitive test equipment in my Ham shack.

If you have email or social media, let CISCO know that importing cheap Chinese
made unfiltered switching supplies is not OK and interferes with important

Standard disclaimers would be in effect - Buyer beware...
At least on EBay, there are protections... unlike “curbing” on private lists

Re: [HCDX] Radio Cairo English-TOTAL GARBAGE on Shortwave

2017-10-01 Thread R. Colin Newell
I think there may have been a time in the eighties or seventies when they had
their crap together... likely with more American involvement and technical
expertise. The U.S. over the decades has pour billions in aid into Egypt - (30B
between 1979 and 2003) and here in the 21st Century, little to show for it -
supremely crumbling infrastructure - a generally dysfunctional and basket case
society with a repressive regime in power.

Their SW service may sound like heck... but at least they have one, eh?

[HCDX] Observations on e-mail list decorum.

2017-09-28 Thread R. Colin Newell
*I also believe that we should enforce a strict ZERO bullying policy on
HCDX --*

*First Offense: The post deleted and the offender given a week long time
out.*

*Second Offense: Boot the offending user from the list - say with a ban
penalty based on the severity of the behaviour. *

*And any replies with "But HE started it..." Should be dealt with a LONGER
ban! :-)*

*I am naive - there has been some naughty behaviour on HCDX from a variety
of different sources - what we need to keep*
*in mind is that we are a band of brothers and sisters with a common cause
- and yes, family members can disagree.*
*But there should be ZERO disrespectful behaviour. *

Re: [HCDX] Report on Radio Clube do Para 4885

2017-09-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
In 1974 I was a 15 year old DXer with CIDX (and by the time I was 17 I was
with SPEEDX...)
and occasionally we would have a 12 or 13 year old keener that would post
logs to the various
columns of defunct clandestine stations that hadn't been on the air for a
couple of years.

We used Allied, Hallicrafter and Hammarlund receivers and upstart Radio
Shack rigs like the DX150 (I still have mine and it is still working!)

Those were the days! (the old DXer says as his shakes his fist and cane at
the internet!)

[HCDX] Many thanks from RCI's Ian McFarland

2017-07-23 Thread R. Colin Newell
"To all my SWL friends & colleagues, I can't tell you how much I
enjoyed reading
all your birthday wishes & comments that Colin so kindly collected &
transcribed from all your e-mails.

For this old man it was a most enjoyable exercise in pure nostalgia. Thank
you all so very much!

There were lots of familiar names on those messages, and of
course, to be truthful, lots of names that weren't familiar after so many
years.

Memory loss is, after all, one of the unfortunate drawbacks
of getting to the age that people refer to as "elderly"! I find it hard to
believe that I retired from RCI over a quarter century ago now, mercifully,
some years before its impending virtual destruction over the
next few years.

I'm just grateful that I was at RCI during almost 25
years of RCI's heyday.

I'm also grateful for all the opportunities I had to travel to Europe, the
U.S. and other parts of Canada to attend a
variety of SWL gatherings and have the opportunity to talk with so many of
my listeners. I'm sure that over my years at RCI I met many times more
listeners than the rest of RCI staff and management combined.

Attending all those events, including the three ANARC conventions that were
hosted by RCI, gave me many useful insights into what our listeners
liked to hear about, and the determined efforts they made, especially in the
noisy interference ridden listening environment in Europe, to tune in to my
SWL Digest program.

I can't tell you how much that meant to
me. Many thanks again for all your wonderful birthday wishes & comments.

Cheers for now & Good Listening everyone. Kind regards. Ian.

Re: [HCDX] Belated Happy Birthday to Ian McFarland

2017-07-03 Thread R. Colin Newell
Ian McFarland (RCI, NHK, CBC...) is having a milestone birthday mid-month
and I am gathering
best wishes via the DXer.ca website contact e-mail.

He is having a small family gathering with some close friends
and I am going to surprise him with a giant birthday card with
transcribed best wishes from all of his fans over the years.

In the 1st hour of posting this yesterday, I had 10 responses.

Please pop over to DXer.ca and check the homepage -
Ian does not read the forums or lists very much so there is
little risk of spoiling the surprise.

Thank you DXer's, SWL's, Hams and radio listeners!

For those who can, please repost this on the other lists -

[HCDX] One from the way back machine

2017-03-31 Thread R. Colin Newell
I had been saying to myself recently, "Remember the good old days in
the 1970's and 1980's when we looked forward to the arrival of
our favourite DX Club magazine?

And how I wished that it would have been nice to keep a
couple of copies of my personal favourite, SPEEDX.

Although my contributions were generally pretty light, it was one
of the highlights of the DX/SWL experience: to actually contribute to
something - to be part of something as exciting as DXing was way back when.

I had done a few Google searches over the years - finding nothing other than
a footnote in history - a short explanation of what SPEEDX was and its
impact on the scene. Imagine my delight when I found an online resource of
dozens and dozens of PDF downloads of the magazines!

http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Speedx.htm

Some months and years are missing but there is hope that those
of us that held on to the zines over the years may fill in the holes.

I imagine a few of us on HCDX, IRCA and others were part of this mania
at the time - there was nothing like it in the years to come - Sure, these
are interesting radio times
but there was something about the early days of youth and innocence and the
sheer freshness of the radio experience early on.

And to those of you on the list, that were once members of a Shortwave radio
club with a monthly self-published zine... Hello! Remember the good old
days?

Agreed - at 1900 UTC in the winter time, anything is possible - but it is
more likely that it was a 2nd harmonic of an American station if there was
no fading or other ionospheric quirks.

[HCDX] Spectre's of Shortwave - Today on WRMI -

2016-11-13 Thread R. Colin Newell
Canadian film maker, Amanda Christie, is releasing a film on the
demise of Radio Canada as an international broadcaster
and the demolition of the RCI broadcast site in Sackville, NB, Canada.

http://www.amandadawnchristie.ca/spectres-of-shortwave/

She will likely attend SWL-fest in 2018 with her new film.

In my opinion, this is one of the most important films about
SW Listening ever made - all shot on a 35MM film camera.

Many thanks goes out to Jeff White of WRMI for comping us the
transmitter time and the time slot.

Shortwave listeners! *Tune in today (Nov. 13) from 23:00 - 01:00 UTC to
listen to Spectres of Shortwave on 7570 khz*, being transmitted by WRMI,
Radio Miami International, from the Okeechobee, Florida transmission site.

Transmission should cover much of North America with a very clear signal.

This transmission is a simulcast and will be transmitted at exactly the
same time as the film screens at the FICFA in Moncton, NB. - at the Dieppe
CINEPLEX.

[HCDX] Sunday - 2300 UTC - WRMI - 7570 Khz

2016-11-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
Canadian Film maker, artist and documentarian Amanda Christie has always
been a fan of shortwave radio - The 38 year old Moncton, New Brunswick,
Canada resident grew up in the shadows of the RCI antenna towers and
observed their influence on the community. In her 35MM film documentary
"Spectres of Shortwave" she reveals the impact and demise of the RCI
transmitter site on the people of Sackville.

The documentary, currently in circulation at Film festivals will be shown
this weekend at a festival and will be simulcast on WRMI.

In my opinion, this is the single most important film about shortwave radio
ever made - and comes at turning point in society where we abandon economic
and reliable mediums of broadcasting and news dissemination and adopt a
user pay medium for getting our information.

Many thanks to Jeff White of WRMI for making this simulcast happen!

Tune in - 2300 UTC on Sunday - November 13th until 0100 UTC November 14th -
WRMI - 7570 Khz - Amanda Christies - Spectres of Shortwave
 - Audio documentary - Please Tune in!

Re: [HCDX] Glenn Hauser logs August 15-16, 2016

2016-08-16 Thread R. Colin Newell
My reply from Radio Australia -

"Dear Mr Newell,

Thank you for your recent correspondence with regards to the Radio
Australia Broadcasts on Shortwave Radio in the SW Pacific. We are currently
working with our transmission provider on a number of shut downs over the
past week and again over the next week to investigate a range of technical
and commercial issues for the service.

In the meantime the services are still on air via our satellite services on
Intelsat IS18 and IS20 as well as our FM network across the targeted
markets in the SW Pacific (for detailed information please see
http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/waystolisten and of
course Radio Australia is online at http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/listen

Kind Regards,"

Either a.) It is a maintenance interview or
b.) They are testing the waters for a complete shutdown of the SW service.

When you think about it - if they turn off the SW transmitters and they
only get 12 letters of complaint, they will realize that there is no
economic model for continuing the service.

[HCDX] Some observations via the Netherlands SDR

2016-03-26 Thread R. Colin Newell
This is likely old news and I may be talking out of turn (or I am
out of touch...)
but...

a.) how long as CRI From Beijing been running such massive
bandwidth on all bands - upwards of 15khz wide... what's up with that?

b.) Thought I heard something that sounded like the Russian
wood-pecker? Is that back.

Here on the West Coast of North America (up in the North-west...)
we have very little to pick from on SW these days -- apart from
sunrise DX across the Pacific.

>From a European perspective, it appears that SW is alive and well.

[HCDX] Return of the DX Podcast

2016-01-01 Thread R. Colin Newell
Happy New Year everyone! Surprise surprise. Way back in 2007 or 2008, a
couple of us were tossing around the idea of a regular scheduled podcast on
the subject of DX, radio and international media.

There were a few episodes and then the effort quietly faded into the
background noise.

Well, I am at it again with another attempt. So, without further fuss,
please head over to DXer.ca for the first in a series of conversations with
Ian McFarland on the subject of his career.

I will be looking for people to interview; dxers, on air personalities,
former personalities, etc...
even going to do equipment reviews and discuss current conditions and
trends.

Enjoy Episode 1! On DXer.ca

Another perfect example of why shortwave prevails in a disaster or
political uprising.

you do not need the WiFi or internet to reach the people...
and those two things would most certainly not be available during and

[HCDX] Radio Canada International to return to air

2015-04-01 Thread R. Colin Newell
In a strange turnaround, the Stephen Harper liberal government
in Canada has approved the return to air of Radio Canada International.

Funding has been restored and a rebuild of the Sackville transmission site
will commence immediately.

We contacted Ian McFarland at his cosy retirement townhouse in Tofino,
Canada
where he commented, If they expect me to come out of retirement to run this
operation, well I am good and ready I still have some good years left
in me...

CBC President and general operations manager Celine Dion was not available
for comment...

[HCDX] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread R. Colin Newell
http://www.wsj.com/articles/radioshack-prepares-bankruptcy-filing-1421279360

We have depended on them for years of easy access to DIY parts, kits and,
yes, a bit of technical expertise.

I still have my DX150B sitting on a lab bench running 24/7 -- as it has
since the
day I bought it on November the 3rd, 1973!

RS slowly drifted away from their die hard DIY electronics experimenter
types
over the years to cater to the latest fad -- and now they are adrift in
irrelevance.

I will be sad to see them go -- but times have changed.

[HCDX] Media release - DXer.ca silenced after 18 years online...

2014-10-22 Thread R. Colin Newell
A media release to some of the other online resources that are out there:

After numerous attacks on my websites -- of unknown origin...
We don't know who or why... or when it would have stopped if
we had stuck it out, DXer.ca has been forced off of the air.

My host Islandnet.com was taking hit after hit, all of their other
3000 websites that they host taking the brunt of these attacks
(they are a small mom and pop operation with limited resources...)

They have politely and respectfully asked me to seek web hosting
elsewhere in the best interests of their other clients.

So. For now: DXer.ca is off the air (along with coffeecrew.com and my
blog and some experimental websites...) for the time being.

We may return to the air -- maybe in a few days...
maybe in a few weeks... not sure.

As you know, DXer.ca has served the radio community for a decade and
a half at least -- promoting the hobby and fostering good will.

In reality, DXer.ca was never under attack -- but as it was associated
with my cluster of websites, it was being victimized just the same.

I am shocked, saddened and grieving the sudden loss of something so
dear to me - to not be able to reach out to the radio community
as I have in the past... it is very hard to deal with.

I am dedicated to getting DXer.ca back on the air as soon as possible.

[HCDX] WWV returns to 25Mhz

2014-04-24 Thread R. Colin Newell
Not really that news-worthy... but for some who like time stations (check

WWV has returned to 25 Mhz with a limited schedule -- 1600 to 2200 Hours

with no guarantees -- on an experimental basis - ERP is 2.5 Kw into a
vertical.

So. In case you hear WWV on 25 Mhz... it's not a harmonic!

[HCDX] Toshiba, RP-F11 Antenna sought...

2014-04-11 Thread R. Colin Newell
Kind of off topic - BUT: I Have a prized radio collection and a golden rule:

Never loan out any radios to the curious.

I broke that rule the other day -- to a young enthusiast... and Lord knows
we need more radio enthusiasts...
Loaned a young man (30+) my *Toshiba*, *RP-F11 - *and even before
he got to play with it, he snapped the antenna off at the pivot point!

This after a clear warning: This is a RARE radio. This radio is NOT
replaceable or repairable.
BE Careful with this radio...
Even after all those warnings, there was a ham fist event that damaged the
radio.

If anyone out there has a dead or spare
Toshiba, RP-F11 that they want to share with me for parts, I would be
forever in their debt!

And Folks: DO NOT Loan out radios unless you are prepared for the worse
case scenario!
