Still working out the bugs on the new build.

I *think* I have too many USB devices.

System is an Asus Maximus VII Hero, i7-4770k, 16GB memory, not
overclocked, Ancient 6850 video card. Antech 650 watt supply.

Now for USB I have: Video camera, 2 external drives, printer, scanner,
mouse, keyboard, two midi keyboards and the problem indication: Alva
 Nanoface sound card.

When I had everything plugged in (printer, scanner midi keyboards were
on an external hub), the sound would start out okay, then begin to
crackle, finally get so bad you couldn't stand it. Tried plugging
nanoface into just about every USB hole with the same result. The
nanoface expects USB 2.0. Tried powering the hub, but that didn't help.

If I unplugged one of the midi keyboards, things were okay for most of
the time. Every once in a while (days apart), I'd get the crackling
again, in the same way. Tried a different hub, no joy.

I checked with the IT department at work, they said they'd had this
happen once, too many USB devices, but don't know if it every got solved
 (it was at another division).

So I'm looking for some ideas on how to make this bullet proof. Right
now the performance is acceptable, on the infrequent times when it's
crackling, I only need unplug the nanoface and replug it and I'm good
 for a while.

Right now I have a PCI-E USB 3.0 card sitting here. It takes power
directly from the system PS. I was planning on isolating the nanoface
with this card. If the problem is power, this has it's own power. If
it's bandwidth, then this card doesn't share bandwidth with any other
 USB port.

 Ideals?

 ThanksSteve

I'm not at all suggesting that it didn't happen; I'm just making sure that
the rest of the collective knows that this is a freak incident and that it is
not a requirement to do anything special in disk management or otherwise when
moving a GPT disk. I've worked with a lot of GPT disks many different
hardware and operating system configurations--I'm quite certain I would have
run in to this if it were a common occurrence. The root cause for the
behavior you experienced is, at this point, a mystery.

If you have information from an official source prescribing that a GPT disk
be unmounted before powering down (if you're removing a disk live it should
always be removed cleanly, GPT or otherwise) and relocating, I'd be
interested to see it, as I've not yielded anything.

stuff pull the drive for safe keeping. I used GPT as it has the 3TB
support. I pulled drive then put it on a SATA to USB 3 cable to read the
drive. Win7 acted like it never saw it. I opened disk management it
asked me if I wanted MBR or GPT... I picked GPT now it wants to format
the drive... WTF did I do?! GPT is foreign to me Google searching is
making me panic with results! I stopped after selecting GPT, again - I
did not format...

[H] Free, lite AV suggestions for XP

In light of MSFT's dropping of XP support thus the download/install of

anyone have a suggestion for a free lite AV program? AVG Avast are

Ok. Had a 3TB drive get setup in a PCH (Network Media Tank). Pulled
it. Went to a Windows station, ran DiskPart, cleaned it off. Put it
back and initialized it GPT. Copied files onto it.

Machine A (the one that did it) sees all the files and data -perfectly-

Remove the drive from USB and connect to anything else, and everything
else sees NOTHING, only the GPT Protected partition that Machine #1
 thinks is gone.

 Any hints?

emails me first before she downloads. I have never seen so much crap
bundled with free software in my life. When I go for freeware, I go to

downloaded a screensaver from CNET and from one download, I got
Whitesmoke, Conduit and Strongvault. That doesn't count the stuff I
 unclicked.

Well, the real question is, is there a safe place I can send her to look

unwanted junk? Gizmo really doesn't do screensavers and right now I'm
not going to send her to CNET.

27 2560x1440 monitors seem to be popular. I was too wary of the overseas
shipping (plus they usually only have a dual-link DVI input and lack a
scaler and OSD) and have purchased 4 total--2 Aurias from Microcenter (same
IPS panel, multiple inputs, with scaler, but still glossy) for $400 each,
and two Asus PB278Q's (Samsung PLS panel, non-aggressive anti-glare,
multiple inputs) for $700 each. In my opinion, the Asus units have better
contrast (for text) than the LG-based IPS displays. I now run my Asus units
at home, and the Aurias at work.

The Asus monitors were perfect, but each of the Aurias had one dead pixel in
the outer areas of the screen. Here's the thing--the pixels on that screen
are so tiny that it doesn't matter. I had to look closely to find them, and
never, ever notice them in normal use. I don't think a handful of dead
pixels along the outer track is a dealbreaker on these.

POP can be set to leave messages on the server.

Think of IMAP like a web based service. Hotmail, for example.
You can be on any PC, anywhere and your hotmail is the same.
Any changes you make, delete, move, whatever - is how it is wherever you
are.
IMAP can be a tad slower in my experience. Depends on many factors.
I will never go back to POP.

Yeah, World of Warcraft could use it but I would have to buy a new copy

new game system until WOW expansion was released... OK let me back up.

MacPro is awesome and I would get it if the expansion for WoW had been
released and I could be sure I was on or past the edge of what I would
need for it. That's really a gaming system. I just don't want to buy one
now and then be kicking myself for buying to early.

Having said that... I will probably not game on an Apple (although I'd

Re: [H] Dell Laptop Batteries

2006-08-17 Thread joeuser

It's the beginning of the end.

Just last month, Dell warned that for its fiscal second quarter ended
Aug. 4, it expected earnings per share to be 21 cents to 23 cents, down
44 percent to 49 percent from the year-earlier period and substantially
below analysts' estimates of 32 cents per share. Dell said its fiscal
second-quarter revenue should reach $14 billion, up 4.3 percent from
second-quarter 2005 but below analysts' expectations of $14.2 billion.

Dell blamed the shortfall on aggressive pricing in a slowing commercial
market worldwide. But analysts and some customers say there are other
things contributing to company's shortfall, namely service and technical
glitches.

Cindy Shaw, vice president of research, computer hardware and services
at Moors Cabot, an equity research firm in San Francisco, said in a
report last month, We are reducing estimates and our price target to
reflect increasing concern about Dell's customer experience challenges
and ability to succeed given current market trends.

Shaw, in the report, said she was responding in part to a Better
Business Bureau (BBB) report that for every PC or printer sold to a U.S.
consumer, a Dell customer is about 2.5 times as likely to complain to
the BBB as a Gateway customer and possibly 16 times as likely as an HP
customer.

I wouldn't see that as great customer service. They neglected to give
you a recovery CD, and when you called them and pointed that out, they
gave you one. Recovery CDs with the system is a minimum service level.
Forcing you to call, convince them that you need one and then sending
one out takes them below minimum. It's ridiculous, and a great example
of how they try to take their customers. If you hadn't been a savvy
customer, you never would have gotten the CD.

The best way though is not to do business with Dell at all.

Ben Ruset wrote:

You're lucky.

The restore disk consists of an OEM install of XP (good) and a driver
disk. It does *not* include any sort of DVD viewing software or CD
burning software that the system ships with from Dell.

I called up my Dell sales rep, and was told well, those are bundled
free, so if you format the drive, you're SOL. we don't even have SKU's
for them.

I called bullshit, and escalated it all the way up to Michael Dell's
office. (For those curious, emailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] is a *great*
way of getting problems solved with Dell if you're a decent sized
corporate customer.)

It took two weeks, but they finally found me some media. I got a rockin
copy of Easy CD Creator 5 and an equally ancient copy of WinDVD. :(

Which is why I think I am going barebones for any new PC purchases at
work. Or maybe I will switch everyone to Mac Mini's. :)

Win2K Pro SP4. System clean. Open system properties and device
manager and usually it will refresh and you can poke around in the
hardware. However, this system constantly polls at the hardware and
since it's always refreshing - you can't open anything. What in
God's name would cause something like this perpetual refresh/poll in
