Re: [ha-Safran]: Lerner Publishing Group pulls Anger Girl from market

2009-01-12 Thread Debidac
As a former Holocaust educator (trained by Facing History and
Ourselves ,The American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and Yad
Vashem), it would have been fairly easy to find the flaw in Angel
Girl by just reading about the camps and their set up. Why couldn't
it just have been presented as a fictionalized account? Since many
of us have written for Kar-Ben, another imprint of Lerner, I am happy
to report that they are meticulous about accuracy in even
multicultural and/or historical fiction. I had to submit a
bibliography of the factual material that inspired Hanukkah Moon with
my manuscript. However, the story is still basically fiction. So,
congratulations to Judye Groner and Kar-Ben. You really know what
you are doing!

I attended a seminar on identifying Jewish values in non-Jewish

[ha-Safran]: Summer Judaica Libraries Internships?

2009-01-12 Thread fleetwud
Hi all,

I am a current graduate student in the School of Information and
Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill working on my MLS. I am very interested in pursuing a career in
Judaica librarianship and am currently looking around for possible
Judaica libraries to apply to for an internship for this summer. So
far the only one I have found is the Jewish Theological Seminary
Library in NYC. Does anyone have any recommendations of other Judaica
libraries that may have summer internships?

Sincerely,

Kristin Fleetwood

RE: [ha-Safran]: Children's holocaust book Angel Girl recalled

2009-01-12 Thread Sherry Wasserman
I am not comfortable with that since the jacket flap says it was based on a
true story, and the last page of the book has a photo of Herman Roma
Rosenblat and tells the tale as a true version of what happened to them.
According to holocaust scholars and other survivors, what they describe
cannot possibly have occurred. Holocaust fiction should not include
fantasy; it should be realistic and true to the events. I believe the book
should be withdrawn from library collections.

[ha-Safran]: Gale's new global issues in context (GIC)

2009-01-12 Thread Marion Stein
Dear Colleagues,
I have just purchased this new Gale product using my NYS
money. The format is very user friendly and allows a great deal of
variety. It includes several hundred news sources in it's list of
resources. It has many from Arab countries.
After a closer look at the content, I have found that their
resource list includes only one from Israel, namely 'Globes. Tel
Aviv' an economic news product. It has no news publications from
Israeli newspapers or periodicals. This troubles me very much and
I've contacted the product managers at Gale about this.
I was wondering if anyone else has looked at this item and has an
opinion about it? Marion Stein

raised in divergently different countries yet experience similar
levels of persecution and bigotry that will one day bring them
together. As colleagues in America’s struggle for civil rights, they
march together from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965. Colon’s
colored pencil and watercolor illustrations “offer a beautiful
complement to the text, describing two unique paths from childhood to
adult life – Martin’s in the rich, warm brown-tones of the American
south and Abraham’s in cool blues and grays that reminded the
illustrator of old World War II movies. When the two exemplary men
join in their march for tolerance, the palettes merge in full color
harmony,” comments Debbie Colodny, a member of the Award Committee.
This book is recommended for grades 2-5.

Hesse will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book
Award’s Older Readers Category for Brooklyn Bridge, published by
Feiwel Friends. While his family left the anti-Semitism of Russia
to build the American dream, Joey Michtom’s dream is to visit the
glittering Coney Island. “Crafting a story from the spark of a true
event, the invention of the Teddy Bear in 1903, Hesse masterfully
weaves multiple themes of hard-work, survival, homelessness, and
familial dedication with interlocking and parallel stories of
families who live reasonably well opposite those less fortunate
living in the shadows below the imposing Brooklyn Bridge,” comments
Rita Soltan, a member of the Award Committee. This book is
recommended for grades 5-8. Hesse also won the 1992 Award for Older
Readers for Letters from Rifka, and a 2004 Honor Award for Older
Readers for The Cats in Kransinski Square.

Zenatti will receive the 2009 gold medal in the Sydney Taylor Book
Award’s Teen Readers Category for A Bottle in the Gaza Sea, published
by Bloomsbury. “This story about the relationship between an Israeli
girl, Tal, and a Palestinian boy, Naim, via e-mail and instant
messaging, is honest but hopeful. Well-written and compelling, the
tale of their relationship conveys the confusion, anger, exhaustion,
and depression felt by many young people during the 2003 intifada,”
comments Susan Berson, a member of the Award Committee. Zenatti’s
memoir, When I Was a Soldier, was a 2005-6 AJL Notable Book for Older Readers.

Six Sydney Taylor Honor Books were named for 2009. For Younger
Readers, Honor Books are: Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride by
Deborah Bodin Cohen with illustrations by Shahar Kober (Kar-Ben),
Sarah Laughs by Jacqueline Jules with illustrations by Natascia
Ugliano (Kar-Ben), A is for Abraham: A Jewish Family Alphabet by
Richard Michelson with illustrations by Ron Mazellan (Sleeping Bear
Press) and Naming Liberty by Jane Yolen with paintings by Jim Burke
(Philomel Books). Aranka Siegal’s Memories of Babi (Farrar Straus
and Giroux) was named an Honor Book for Older Readers, and Freefall
by Anna Levine (Greenwillow Books) was named an Honor Book in the
Teen Reader Category.

In addition to the medal-winners, the Award Committee designated
twenty-two Notable Books of Jewish Content for 2009: six in the
Younger Readers Category, ten in the Older Readers Category, and four
for Teens. Genesis—the Book with Seventy Faces: A Guide for the
Family by Esther Takac with illustrations by Anna Pignataro
(Pitspopany Press) and Celebrating with Jewish Crafts by Rebecca Edid
Ruzansky with photographs by Roberto Zeballos-Peralta
(self-published) impressed the Award Committee with their uniqueness
and range. They have been designated Notable Books for

[ha-Safran]: Book Announcement

2009-01-12 Thread Anita Bihovsky
JPS is pleased to announce publication of a new book:
Meneket Rivkah
A Manual of Wisdom and Piety for Jewish Women
By Rivkah bat Meir (author), Frauke von Rohden (editor)
http://www.jewishpub.org/product.php?id=178
With a critical introduction and commentary by Frauke von Rohden

A book of ethics by one of the first female Jewish writers

The first-known Yiddish book to be written by a woman, Meneket Rivkah
(Rivkah's Nurse) reveals a great deal about 16th-century Jewish
women's lives and religious practices. It includes Rivkah bat Meir's
sermons, her interpretations of the Bible, and other religious
instructions on various topics to guide women in their familial relationships.

First published posthumously in Prague, in 1609, Meneket Rivkah
pre-dates the work of Glueckel of Hamelin and makes a new
contribution to the fields of Yiddish literature and Jewish women's
literature. Von Rohden's critical introduction and commentary serve
to place the work within biblical and rabbinical literature, and
within other Yiddish ethical works of Rivkah bat Meir's time. This is
the first book to include the original Yiddish text in English
translation, as well as the original Yiddish manuscript of Rivkah bat
Meir's unpublished Simhes Toyre Lid. The book also includes the
original Yiddish text of Meneket Rivkah.
Rivkah bat Meir is one of the few early women writers whose works in
Yiddish have survived the centuries. She preached to many women in
her community and was highly educated.
Frauke von Rohden is a research associate in the Academy Project
Encyclopedia of Jewish Cultures at the Simon Dubnow Institute for
Jewish History and Culture at the University of Leipzig.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Article in Scientific American

2009-01-12 Thread Yosef Branse
Shalom,

I don't know if this will be of much help, but there is an essay
entitled Goedel's Proof
by Ernest Nagel and James R. Newman in the anthology The World of
Mathematics, edited by James R. Newman, published by Simon and
Schuster in 1956. The essay
appears in Volume 3, pp. 1666-1695.
Oddly, there is no attribution of Scientific American as the source
of the article -
perhaps that is a different version.
If you can't get hold of the Scientific American, maybe you can
locate the book via
Inter-Libary Loan.

Good luck,

Dancing Alfonso
(2007) 50 min. In Hebrew, Spanish, French Moroccan w/English subtitles

The Video Librarian, A. Jacobson, November, 2008
Filmmaker Barak Heymann’s Dancing Alfonso follows a Tel Aviv senior
citizen leading a dramatic life. Alfonso, the lead dancer in a
flamenco class with an average age of 75, uses dance to express the
alternating emotions of hope and rage of a man on the cusp of losing
his wife to illness. The flamenco dance group heaves with its own
drama as well, as members engage in this traditionally seductive and
mysterious dance while trying to avoid developing feelings or falling
into conflict with one another. After Alfonso loses his wife, he
connects with fellow dancer Sima, which causes problems with both
Alfonso’s grown children and his classmates, who feel the situation
is inappropriate…especially for someone his age. Later, when
Alfonso’s new relationship falls apart, he once again displays
resolve, strength of character, and charisma: rather than sinking
into a depression, Alfonso picks himself up, dusts himself off, and
starts all over again—leaving the viewer with a sense of hope for
Alfonso. Like Young @ Heart, Dancing Alfonso offers us a privileged
view into the inner lives of seniors, while underscoring the
durability of the human spirit. Highly recommended.

Dear Librarian;
As people are living longer, the topic of how to enjoy a fuller
richer life has taken on greater consequence. As the above quote from
Video Librarian affirms, Dancing Alfonso is a wonderful addition to
any library collection. The film won the Silver Asian Award at the
Shangai International Film Festival in 2008. Already purchased by the
University of Maryland Library, this film very beautifully
demonstrates the will to live – and the need for love at any age.
A charmingly intimate insight into the love and passion of old age,
using flamenco dance to symbolize the determination to be fully alive
in later life. Jury Statement – Shangai International Film
Festival, Silver Asian Award, 2008
The price for the purchase of the film is $300 for university
libraries and $115 for public libraries. The price does not include
shipping and handling.

realm and in programming; the rabbi has also asked me to collect some
synagogue library job descriptions from other congregations. If
anyone has one to share, I’d appreciate it if you’d send it to me,
along with an indication of how many hours/week the librarian is

receive to the list.

Thanks!

[ha-Safran]: Global Issues in Context

2009-01-12 Thread Marion Stein
Colleagues,
This is new product from Gale that has many fine features
in terms of its flexibility. It is rich and covers many
topics. But unfortunately it does have a bias that does not please
anyone who cares about Israeli coverage and an unbiased look at the
Middle East. Granted there are many fewer news resources from
Israel than there are from all of the Arab world and Middle East in
general, but this product so far has one newspaper from Israel. It
is' Globes- Tel Aviv', an economic newspaper. That is it.
Over the past 2 days, I've been bringing this fact to the attention
of hasafran and the members of HVLA, the Hudson Valley Library
Association of which I am a member. What follows is a letter by one
of the HVLA librarians who was equally disturbed by this
realization. Her letter to one of the product managers at Gale, the
producer of this product, tells how she feels. She has given me
permission to share this with you for your information.
I have been in touch with several people at Gale who say they are
working on remedying this situation. The product is brand new and
hopefully shortly they will have multiple Israeli sources as part
of the resources from which they draw their information and which
they offer to their subscribers. We can never rely completely on an
aggregator, but their should have some attempt to cover more than
just one side from the locale and all references to the other from
external sources.

I'm sorry that I have to inform you of this. I like the product and
hope that they will come through with acceptable Israeli sources.

Hi Craig:
Happy New Year! Sorry I didn't return your message; it's my 1st week back
from break, and I'm still digging out.
To be honest, I'm concerned about the bias in your products. I previewed
Global Issues in Context and I noticed that Gale does not provide
articles from major Israeli news outlets about the conflict in Gaza. Why
is the coverage unbalanced?
Moreover,Hamas members are described as 'militants'. I believe that the
US, along with other nations has classified Hamas as a terrorist organization.
The same bias exists in your Custom Newspaper database; there is minor
representation of Israeli media. I would think that Gale would make an
effort to include more stories from a country that has such a vital role
in world politics.
After the Encyclopedia of Racism fiasco, I would think that Gale would
have made more effort to provide fair and balanced views on world issues.

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone knew of a good anthology of Jewish
folklore/folktales that is available in large print. I'm looking for
something that grandparents might like to read aloud to children and
something that would be easy on their eyes. Amazon searches have not
turned up much; we have a lot of folktale books in our library but
nothing in large print.

Thanks so much.

[ha-Safran]: Sharing bookmarks

2009-01-12 Thread Lee Jaffe
I wanted to reintroduce the idea of sharing Web links in a durable
way via a social bookmarking tool. The idea is, essentially, that we
save and/or tag items of common interest in central location. There
are several important advantages to this strategy.

For instance, as a personal tool, a social bookmarking site makes
your bookmarks available to you wherever you are. Ever sat at a
colleagues desk or in an Internet cafe and tried to remember how to
reach a site bookmarked on your computer? This solves that problem.

But the advantages go far beyond that. Once you save a link to the
central site, it makes it easier for other users to find that site
again. It's a bit like saying, Here's something I found valuable and
I hope you find it useful, too. And, as more people save a link, its
status rises. It is one way for good links to rise to the top. I've
always felt that if librarians took more ownership of these sorts of
efforts, marking and reviewing the good stuff, the quality of the
Internet would improve.

There are several social bookmarking sites, all with their advantages
and adherents. I've been using delicious.com the longest and I still
recommend it. I've been tagging links that come down through the
HaSafran list that interest me with the tag ajlib. (It seems that
AJL is used commonly for some other topic.) You can see everything
everyone has every tagged this way via the link:

http://delicious.com/tag/ajlib

There are several ways to share links with other users. The simplest
is to add the above URL to your Web pages: e.g., Links recommended
by Association of Jewish Libraries members There are even fancier
tools that will allow you to embed live lists of these tags directly
within pages. For an example of this, see my blog site, bottom right
column: http://jsucsclibrary.blogspot.com/

If you want to join in and contribute, you have to register (for
free) with delicious.com. There are several ways to add and tag
links. I use the Firefox plug-in that adds buttons to my browser's
menubar, allowing me to easily bookmark the page I'm viewing.

If no one else has saved that item, it's a bit of a blank slate. You
can edit the title if you need to, add notes, and enter any tags you
want. If you are there first, you should definitely add ajlib to
the tags so that other members can find it again.

If it has been saved before, previously-used tags are suggested. You
can still add other tags as you need them and they will be readily
available to you for retrieving your bookmarks when you need
them. Feel free to accept the tags previous users have suggested or not.

If we all use the ajlib tag when we add AJL-related items, the above
URL will allow us to collect and share our links in one place.

This seems like a good thing. I don't think we need to vote on
this. All that is needed is for those willing to participate start
to save and add tags for this to work.

Judaism of the Second Temple Period - Vol 1: Qumran and Apocalypticism
by דוד פלוסר / The Hebrew University Magnes Press

In Judaism of the Second Temple Period, Flusser examines the influence
of apocalypticism on various Jewish sects. He states that the
teachings of Jesus, while reflecting first and foremost the views of
the sages, are also influenced by Jewish apocalypticism. Examining the
Essenes, their effect on Hebrew language, the split of sects, and much
more, Flusser's collected essays offer an important source of study
for any Dead Sea Scrolls scholar.

On Germans and Jews under the Nazi Regime: Essays by Three Generations

The Battle For The Land
by Yossi Katz / The Hebrew University Magnes Press

In 1901, the Zionist Organization founded the Jewish National Fund to
purchase lands in the Land of Israel and transfer them to the
ownership of the Jewish people. The book before us examines and
summarizes the JNF's land purchasing policies and endeavors, from the
establishment of the Fund to the establishment of the State of Israel
in 1948. A major part of this essay centers on the period from 1936 to
1948, which were the most important years of the JNF's activities and
during which it became almost the sole Jewish entity promoting this
aspect of the building of the land of Israel. During these years, the
JNF purchased about 600,000 dunams, which constitute more than 60% of
its acquisitions from its establishment to the establishment of the
State. The pivotal nature of the JNF during those years stems first
and foremost from the recognition of its settlement endeavors by the
top institutions of the Zionist Organization, in promoting the
political interests of the Zionist movement.

The Dead Sea: The world's ultimate natural healing resort
by Shaul Sukenik / The Hebrew University Magnes Press

This book explains in simple and understandable words all the
principles, mechanisms of action and advantages of all the treatment
modalities at health resort areas. This book describes all the
diseases that can be treated successfully at the Dead Sea. and is the
first one that was written and directed for the general public.

Treasures on Camels' Humps: Historical and Literary Studies
by מרדכי כוגן / The Hebrew University Magnes Press

The twenty-five new studies in this volume present the reader with an
up-to-date picture of some of the issues and the methodologies that
engage scholars of the Ancient Near East. These essays reflect the
broad span of the field, both geographically and chronologically, from
Sumerian texts of the third millennium BCE, to the town of Nuzi in
Iraqi Kurdistan in the mid-second millennium, from there to inquiries
into Assyrian and Babylonian documents and inscriptions, as well as
into recently recovered Aramaic ostraca from Idumea in southern Israel
dating to the fourth century BCE. Rounding off this varied and rich
collection are several investigations concerning Ancient Israel and
biblical matters. Specialists from Israel, Europe, the United States,
Canada and Japan have joined together in this volume to honor Israel
Eph'al, professor emeritus of Jewish History at the Hebrew University
of Jerusalem, whose many scholarly achievements are hereby noted.

Re: [ha-Safran]: Gale's new global issues in context (GIC)

2009-01-12 Thread B Weinstein
Hi everyone-
I just spoke to Amy Moulton who handles my accountat Gale. I just
starting receiving global issues in context and she assured me that
it is a work in progress--that many newspapers have not as yet been
included-French newspapers for example. They will be including the
Jerusalem Post, Haaretz, and Arutz Sheva and are negotiating for the
feed for broadcast news-- I think from the Israeli ministry. Amy
says that they were being pressured to come out with the database so
it is still in a somewhat unfinished state. The major problem is
copyright negotiations--something Al Jazeera doesn't seem to care
about--they just want their publicity out there.
Let's hope that this gets cleared up quickly. I understand the
concern--I told Marion and Amy that I'm not very happy about this
situation--but I do trust Amy. She says that the person in charge of
copyright negotiations for publications is an observant Jew.

[ha-Safran]: Book Release and Event

2009-01-12 Thread Gail Rosen
I first heard Hilda Stern Cohen tell her story at a Yom HaShoah
gathering in 1996. She told us she was nine and living in the small
German village of Nieder-Ohmen when Hitler came to power in 1933. She
chronicled twelve years of a painful and yet inspiring story.
After she spoke, I mentioned in conversation that “I am a
storyteller.” Hilda overheard.
“Do you tell stories of the Holocaust?”
“No,” I said. “I don’t feel entitled to tell them. They’re not my
stories. But they should be told and I am grateful to have heard your
story. I hope you continue to tell it for a long time, and I wonder
who will tell it when you no longer can.”
She looked me squarely in the eye and smiled. “You tell it,” she said.
I have been telling Hilda's story since she died, in 1997. Now Hilda
tells her own story, in a book that is edited from her writings and
poetry, along with texts from our interviews. A book release event
takes place in Washington, D.C. Details are below. Join us if you are
in the area!

Words that Burn Within Me: Faith, Values, Survival
by Hilda Stern Cohen (Dryad Press, 2008)
with
Werner V. Cohen
and
Gail Rosen
storyteller
Words that Burn Within Me brings together the life story of Hilda
Stern Cohen (1927-1997) and the remarkable German poetry she wrote
over four years of imprisonment in the Lodz Ghetto, where she was a
member of the literary circle around writer and painter Izrael
Lejzerowicz. After a year in a displaced person's camp in Austria,
Hilda emigrated to the United States in July 1946 and married Werner
V. Cohen, abandoning the German language, but saving her
extraordinary poems and prose in notebooks discovered by her husband in 1997.

There's a paragraph by Sandee Brawarsky (Broken Stories) about
Words that Burn Within Me in the New York Jewish Week:

Like Berg, Hilda Stern Cohen also put her manuscript away in a
drawer. She wrote poems and literary prose in German, during the
three years she was in the Lodz Ghetto and then Auschwitz. She
compiled the work and continued to write in a displaced persons camp
after the war, but after moving to the U.S. and marrying, she put the
notebooks away, not even telling her husband about them. Her deeply
felt and beautifully expressed words, preserved in seven notebooks,
were discovered after her death, and are published in English for the
first time in “Words that Burn Within Me: Faith, Values, Survival”
(Dryad Press).

Re: [ha-Safran]: Children's holocaust book Angel Girl recalled

2009-01-12 Thread Debidac
There are many fictionalized accounts of historical events--even the
Holocaust: Sophie's Choice, The Cats in Krasinski Square, and many
others. They are based on actual facts but are presented in story
form. However, you know up front that they are fact-based
fiction. The problem is that while food was sometimes smuggled into
the ghettos or even thrown over the walls, this would have been too
difficult to do in the heavily guarded camps. If a writer is up
front about sources and does not totally distort reality, there
should be no reason to avoid writing Holocaust stories which help
make the sad events more accessible to children and teens. Most
Holocaust survivors are very resentful of out and out fabricating
about their experience, but they don't say writers for children must
only write the absolute and unvarnished terrible truth. The problem
is when a book is a total fabrication rather than fact-based fiction.
For publishing companies this adds one more reason for them to refuse
Holocaust stories.
