[ha-Safran]: New Book Announcement: Jewish Choices, Jewish
New from the Jewish Publication Society: Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices -- Power By Elliot N. Dorff (editor), Louis E. Newman (editor) http://www.jewishpub.org/product.php?id=311 This JPS ethics series deals with some of the most critical moral issues of our time. How do we use power once we've gained it? Is it completely for our individual benefit, or do we use it to help our neighborhoods, or society at-large? What kinds of decisions must CEOs and business owners make regarding suppliers and customers? How should bosses treat workers? Teachers treat students? Parents treat children? Government treats citizens? Power dynamics affect people on a political level, a social level, and a deeply personal level as well. The newest volume in the Jewish Choices, Jewish Voices series examines these dynamics and includes essays by such fine contributors as U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, NBC Universal Television-West Coast President Marc Graboff, and author and scholar James Diamond. Elliot N. Dorff is the author of three JPS books on Jewish ethics: To Do the Right and the Good, Love Your Neighbor and Yourself, and Matters of Life and Death. He is Rector and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the American Jewish University of Los Angeles. Dorff serves on a number of national boards and committees dealing with Jewish ethics and is the chairman of the Committee of Jewish Law and Standards of the Rabbinical Assembly. Louis E. Newman is the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies and the director of Judaic Studies at Carleton College, and the author of Past Imperatives: Studies in the History and Theory of Jewish Ethics. [ha-Safran]: New Edition of The Kuzari - 12th Century Jewish Classic
12th Century Jewish Classic Published in English - The Kuzari Feldheim Publishers is proud to announce the publication of a revised edition of The Kuzari. This classic text has been out of print for quite some time. This book is available from Baker Taylor and the publisher (Feldheim): 1-800-237-7149 Any bookshelf boasting an array of the world's greatest philosophical literature would not be complete without Yehuda HaLevi's 12th century classic, The Kuzari. In dialog format, it presents a meeting between the ruler of the Khazar kingdom and a Jewish sage, who together, discuss a series of theological, philosophical, and ideological dilemmas that are timely, timeless, and universal. The Kuzari was so vital a text when it first appeared in Arabic, that it was soon translated into Hebrew to make the work more accessible to a broader public. Over the centuries, it remains an informative, fundamental literary resource. In part, this is due to the breadth and depth of its content, but also to the engaging manner in which it clarifies a diverse range of essential Jewish concepts theological, philosophical, and historical. Several translations have appeared in English over the last one hundred years, but none compare to the standard set in 1998 by Rabbi N. Daniel Korobkin. This critically acclaimed masterpiece stands out for its accuracy and clarity, while remaining loyal to the logic, passion, and spirit of the original text. The Korobkin Kuzari is an academic achievement of the highest order taking an enduring classic and making it readily accessible to a new generation of readers. Out of print for years, Feldheim Publishers, as part of its distinguished Torah Classics Library, presents the Korobkin translation of The Kuzari (Feldheim, January, 2009) in an updated, annotated edition that also benefits from several new and noteworthy features. The volume now includes the full Hebrew, voweled text alongside the English translation on every page. An extensive introduction helps orient the reader with a biography of Yehuda HaLevi, a discussion of his philosophical approach to Judaism, as well as a brief history of the 8th century Khazar kingdom. This provides a broad yet thorough historical context that will add immeasurably to any reader's understanding of this treasured work. Rabbi Korobkin has improved upon his own translation with changes, corrections, additional notes and extensive commentary, making this volume the most authoritative edition of this classic work currently available. For centuries, this influential text has been studied and enjoyed for the illuminating manner in which it addresses basic philosophical issues and concerns. Now, the new Feldheim Kuzari makes this indispensable guide available to anyone thirsting for knowledge and a better understanding of Judaism's fundamental precepts. About the author: A true product of Spain's Golden Age, Yehuda HaLevi was born in Toledo in the year 1075, and raised in an intellectual climate where he became well-versed in Jewish scholarship, Arabic literature, as well as Greek science and philosophy. He was a physician, prolific poet, philosopher, and communal leader. To defend Judaism against its detractors, he authored The Kuzari, which took 20 years to complete. HaLevi died in the year 1141, but his volumes of poetry and philosophy continue to inspire and inform through eloquent translations and repeated printings of his many enduring and popular works. About the translator: Rabbi N. Daniel Korobkin received his rabbinic ordination from Ner Israel Rabbinical College. He is the spiritual leader of Kehillat Yavneh in Los Angeles, CA, where he resides with his wife and children. He directs synagogue services for the Orthodox Union on the west coast, and continues to pursue medieval Jewish studies as a doctoral candidate at UCLA. Because this year our sun returns to the exact spot it occupied at the time of Creation something that happens only once every 28 years! To celebrate this special occasion, the Jewish people across the world recite The Sun's Special Blessing which is known as Birkat Hachamah in Hebrew. Every twenty-eight years this Hebrew blessing for the sun is recited. The next date set is April 8, 2009 in the Hebrew year, 5769. At this time, the sun returns to the position that it was, when the Universe was first created. Every 28 years, as the Jewish community celebrates the return of the sun to its original place in the heavens at the precise time and day of its creation, this prayer is universally accepted as part of Jewish law. The Sun's Special Blessing (Pitspopany Press, March 2009) tells the story of a third grade class learning about this special blessing with their teacher Mr. Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs tells the class that when he was in third grade, his class buried a time capsule that they filled with wonderful mementos from 1981. As they buried their time capsule, his class recited the special blessing on the sun. With shovels in hand, Mr. Jacobs marches his third grade class outside to find the exact spot where he helped bury the time capsule. When they open it, the class discovers the ancient artifacts that were so popular in the world 28 years earlier. Now it's their turn to say the special blessing on the sun and put into the time capsule what they think represents their world of 2009. What would you put into the time capsule? [ha-Safran]: Princes among Men: Memories of Eight Young Souls
Full color memorial book published in memory of the students killed at Mercaz Harav last year: Princes among Men: Memories of Eight Young Souls When an Arab terrorist infiltrated Jerusalem's Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva on Thursday evening, March 6, 2008, and mercilessly slaughtered 8 high-school students while seriously wounding dozens of others, the tragic event sent immediate shock waves that were felt, almost instantly, throughout the Jewish world. These were eight young men, engaged in sacred study, in the springtime of their lives. They had family and friends. They were loved, and suddenly, they were lost. Through the horror and loss, the grief and suffering family, friends, classmates and teachers reached out to one another in an effort to respectfully fill the void. They discovered that by sharing and remembering these eight precious souls, by telling and retelling stories of their friendship, their scholarship, and their unique character traits the process itself provided a source of great comfort. It is now a year since their passing and many of these shared stories, recollections, impressions, along with profound words of Torah written by family members, friends, and teachers have been collected into this precious volume. Princes Among Men: Memories of Eight Young Souls is a wellspring of inspiration and a lasting tribute that enables the light of their lives to shine and keep on shining. This book is available from Baker Taylor and the publisher (Feldheim): 1-800-237-7149 Stuart Schnee Public Relations, Marketing Sales US Tel: 973-796-2753 Israel Tel: +972-54-790-9120 Fax: +972-2-561-0943 --- Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) === Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@osu.edu SUBscribing, SIGNOFF commands send to: Listproc @ lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Questions, problems, complaints, compliments;-) send to: galron.1 @ osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html History: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/history.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org
