Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

2015-05-06 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Dear Ellen (and Esteemed Colleagues):

If you do not own a copy of Sharon Barcan Elswit's The Jewish Story Finder, run
and get one. The 2012 edition includes 668 Tales that are listed by subject
and source.

In Elswit's 2009 edition, there is a list of several versions of "The Dream and
the Treasure," where a poor man dreams of a treasure. He goes to seek it out,
and some kind of guard is there, who tells the man about HIS dream of a
treasure buried in a poor man's house.

Some Jewish versions:
The Dream - Nina Jaffe - The Mysterious Visitor
Reb Eisik's Treasure - Ellen Frankel - The Classic Tales
The Treasure - Uri Shulevitz
The Treasure - Howard Schwartz - Miriam's Tambourine

A Secular version:
Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share by Kevin O'Malley (Walker and Company, 2007)

For the "It Could Always Be Worse," I love using Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern.

One more:

Feathers used to illustrate the harms of gossip

Forest, Heather. Feathers. Illustrated by Marcia Cutchin. Little Rock:
August House Little Folk, 2005. ISBN: 0-87483-755-3. Rhyming text and
colorful illustrations teach that hurtful words cannot be taken back easily
once they are spoken. The author credits Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev with
this tale.

Rothenberg, Joan. Yettele's Feathers. New York: Hyperion Books for Children,
1995. ISBN: 0-7868-2081-0. The town gossip learns her lesson when the rabbi
tells her to cut open a pillow and bring him all the feathers. Yettele
realized that words cannot be taken back.

Waldman, Debby. A Sack Full of Feathers. Illustrated by Cindy Revell.
Vancouver: Orca Book Publishers, 2006. ISBN: 978-1-55143-332-5. Yankel
loves to go around his village of Olkinik telling stories, often about other
people. One day the rabbi gives Yankel the job of putting a feather on every
doorstep in the village. Yankel completes this task as he thinks of the
stories he will tell his schoolmates. When he returns to the rabbi's house, he
is instructed to collect all the feathers and bring them back. As hard as he
tries, Yankel cannot do it. From this exercise, Yankel learns that you cannot
take back a story once it is told - "it goes where it goes, and you cannot say
where or how or when."

I know a story, but unfortunately I don’t remember the names.
There is a story about a person who complained to his rabbi that his house was too small and the rabbi told him to bring in his chickens, his goat, his cow, his horse etc. When the man blew up that now his house
was way way way too crowded the rabbi told him to take out the chickens, goat, cow, horse, etc and suddenly the house seemed much bigger!

I’ve seen several different versions with either the rabbi, or just a generic wise man.

Hi Eileen,

Raisel's Riddle by Erica Silverman is a Jewish version of the Cinderella story
that might work for you.

Sheryl Stahl's suggestion of "It Could Always Be Worse" by Margot Zemach or
"Could Anything Be Worse" by Marilyn Hirsch (two books with rabbis in them)
would work if you used one book with the rabbi and another with a "wise person"

Re: [ha-Safran] Multicultural stories

2015-05-06 Thread Lois Ruby
The story "Stone Soup" is found in many cultures, including ours. I just did a
quick peek at Amazon and found many versions. The book Sheryl is talking about
is "Could Anything Be Worse?" I know of two Jewish versions of it, the other
called "It Could Always Be Worse," I think. I'm sure this has a generic version
as well. Go for it, Eileen!

There is a story about a person who complained to his rabbi that his house was
too small and the rabbi told him to bring in his chickens, his goat, his cow,
his horse etc. When the man blew up that now his house was way way way too
crowded the rabbi told him to take out the chickens, goat, cow, horse, etc and
suddenly the house seemed much bigger!

I've seen several different versions with either the rabbi, or just a generic

Re: [ha-Safran] Books with a nature and Jewish theme

2015-05-06 Thread Sussman, Joanna
Dear Safranim,

I would suggest Kar-Ben's award-winning "Nature in Israel" holiday series, the
author of which won this year's National Jewish Book Award for her book "The
Patchwork Torah." Here's the link to this lovely series:
http://www.karben.com/Nature-in-Israel-Holiday-Set-_p_567.html. A fifth book,
New Month, new Moon," about Rosh Chodesh, has just been added to this series as
well.

Does anyone have suggestions for picture books with a nature and Jewish
theme--- excluding selections with TuB'Shevat content?

Many thanks

[ha-Safran] Attack on Jewish Book store prevented

2015-05-06 Thread Dina Tanners
Not sure you want to print this but I just read in Tablet online that an
attack on a Jewish book store in Barcelona was prevented by police last
month. I just wrote Alba to see how her community is dealing with the news.
