I’ve been using Baker& Taylor for years.  Their discounts snd services are good
And the reps are helpful even if you are a small libraryBut you do need to go
elsewhere for specialized Judaica. Publishers may be able to work with you

I hope that helps.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Buying books

We have recently revitalized our synagogue library moving everything onto an
online catalog (using Opals).
Now we are looking for recommendations for purchasing new books. Years ago we
used Baker and Taylor but am looking for other possibilities. Are religious
organizations given discounts?
Appreciate all suggestions.

Many thanks

Re: [ha-Safran] Checking out books

I agree with Amalia. Our congregation is very fluid. It is time consuming to
issue and keep track of barcodes especially if you are just getting on line. I
do not use patron bar codes in either library where I work. It works just fine.

Re: [ha-Safran] question

2023-07-24 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
We have a file with a card for each member. The member finds the card in the
file, paperclips the book circulation card to the name card and leaves it in a
designated box. When I come into the library the next time , I entered the
information into our circ system.
It's simple and works as long as the files are up-to-date and if the book
borrowers follow instructions.
if you have a volunteer in charge on Shabbat, there should be no problems.

Re: [ha-Safran] Beth David Library (Reform) in Westminster California is Being cut in half.

2023-07-13 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
 Toby,
So beautifully put especially your point about having the clergy and staff
promote the library.
I feel fortunate to still have a job even though it's only 6 hours a week,
have had the same salary for 10 years ( it's sort of a trade-off for flexible
vacation time), the same budget of $1800, and do Hebrew School lessons weekly
and see the preschool for storytime. No time to promote the library; no money
to do meaningful or memorable programming. People who do use the library praise
it. I often get new books before the public library but, as you say, people
don't think of checking the synagogue despite telling people in real time that
we have the books they want to read. It's easier to have the books delivered to
their front doors or to borrow an ebook from the public library.
Our public library- a good one- didn't even promote Jewish American Heritage
Month with a display, never mind programs that might expose patrons-or
customers- to Jewish interest books.
Maybe we need to reinvent our selves as learning or literacy centers to appeal
to younger families.
It seems to be an unsolvable problem, but one which AJL is doing it's best to
help solve.

cut back librarian hours to the point of ridiculousness back in 2017 and still
has no librarian. The other had me remove 1/3 of their collection to change the
library to a multi-use room. All both needed, in my opinion, was more promotion
from the clergy and staff plus displays in the foyer. The pandemic certainly
made the situation even worse as people were not in the building for 2 years
and even now, things are still hybrid.
My take on the demise of time and/or money investment in synagogues libraries
is 1) Many do not think of checking the synagogue library collection for
specific titles or browsing like they do the public libraries. 2)  Many people
nowadays do not value serendipity or the library experience. They buy books
online or visit independent bookstores. 3) synagogues themselves are changing
and having to make tough financial choices. 4) Clergy and staff do not promote
library usage - I cannot explain that one at all!
This is all especially sad because our Jewish youth are not getting exposed to
good quality Judaic literature from a curated collection. Books with Jewish
themes or characters are buried in school and public libraries.
Thanks to AJL, at least we have access to great recommendations to award
winning Jewish books. We just have to do our best to promote them. Even sadder
than the loss of these synagogue libraries is the loss of so many regional JCC
or Jewish public libraries!
keep up the good work, AJL!

My library at Beth David in Westminster, California is being cut in half.  They
need the classroom for the Youth Lounge.  The Youth Lounge is being turned into
a preschool classroom to make more money for the synagogue as the Preschool has
a waiting list. The 1,100 childrens and teen books are going into the Religious
School Directors office. The 100 reference books are going into the Rabbi's
office. 400 of the 1800 adult fiction and non-fiction books are staying in the
new Youth Lounge.  The remaining 1,400 or 1,500 books are going away.  This is
a nightmare to eliminate the books that are going away from my ResourceMate

 Lisa,
Thanks for sharing this. I remember being on the Sydney Taylor Book Award
Committee that year and asking the same question about cute animals in Jewish
books. Jane Zalben's Benny books were a breakthrough and  the book was
designated an honor book. Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt was the prize
recipient that year.

So happy to see that Benny and his family are still around.

 Linda,

There's a series- not new but still relevant, I think, called You be the Judge.
It has some ethical questions in it. Although I've used it with younger kids,
like upper elementary, I think it could be used with highschoolers. Torah Aura
is the publisher.
There are at least 3 in the series and are available on Amazon and maybe at a

2022-11-23 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Thanks for all the feedback. This question turned out to be a lot harder than
I thought since even Hebrew speakers were stumped.

But this is what makes library work both challenging and fun.

Happy Thanksgiving! Adar, adar, adar!

It's actually hard for Americans here to find whole turkeys to roast; the ovens
are generally so small you could barely fit a whole turkey in. But my daughter
did see whole turkeys in a supermarket in Bakaa (lots of Yanks) this week. I'm
Canadian, and we don't normally make as big a thing about Thanksgiving as the
Americans (we also celebrate our Thanksgiving at harvest time - ha-ha-ha!), but
my granddaughter goes to an English gan run by Bostonians, and they actually
did Thanksgiving crafts, just the way you would in an American kindergarten,
last week. (Apparently some Americans even miss American Christmas so much that
they do that stuff out of nostalgia -- in Israel! May be an urban legend, but I
think I read an article about this in Jerusalem Report some years ago. My guess
is -- Tel Aviv, not Jerusalem!)

Thank you to everyone who tried to answer my question of the sound a turkey

There were a variety of answers, none of which sounds much like gobble, gobble.

The best answer came from my synagogue's operations director, a native Israeli
who, confirmed one of the suggestions.

A turkey's sound in Hebrew is adar, adar, adar or in some places written hadar,
hadar, hadar.

If you ask a turkey when Purim is, the turkey will answer Adar, Adar.

Re: [ha-Safran] thoughts on "Let the celebration begin"

2022-05-04 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
When Let the Celebration Begin first came out there was a huge discussion about
its appropriateness. Most Judaic children’s librarians had major problems with
the book and the dissonance between the story and the illustrations. However,
secular librarians and press seemed very positive about the book. I did not buy
the book although I like Wild’s artwork and other books. The age range is also
a problem.

At the time of the book’s publication, I was a school librarian. I did not buy
the book for my school.

I haven’t seen the reprint but I am glad to hear that there is back matter
explaining the rationale.

introducing Holocaust to very young children; how can you relate something so
horrible without either watering it down or terrifying them? The parents in our
synagogue agree with me, so I keep those books (acquired before my time) in a
spot away from the kids. They are listed in our online catalog, so if the
parents want them, that's their business, but so far none have.

If you look through this Amazon listing, Publisher's Weekly found it
distasteful (and identified it's audience as age 3-6), but School Library
Journal liked it (suggesting an audience of grade 4 and up!)

Our school library has just received a donation of a book called "A time for
toys" by Margaret Wild - It has been more recently been published under the
title "Let the Celebration begin". Though the front covers are different, the
rest of the book is the same. In view of lots of discussion about who should
write Holocaust books, the softening of the horrors of the camps, and where the
focusof such stories sit, I am curious to know how people feel about this book.
The illustrations (and narrative honestly) make me feel uncomfortable though I
cannot explain why, and the more recent edition has a rationale and background
in the back by the author and illustrator. They talk about the sensitivity of
the illustrations and storyline, but I am somewhat uncomfortable with the whole
book. I would appreciate others' thoughts and insights, and whether you have
put it in your library.

Re: [ha-Safran] Obsolete media in synagogue libraries

2022-02-28 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
I've been at my current job for about 9 years. I've not yet had anyone borrow
a VHS tape or even ask about them. The other day the synagogue's executive
director just took them all including the furniture case that they were stored
in and tossed the entire thing.

I think that's basically the future for these collections even if there is
good-or even-rare material. Most people don't have the equipment and are more
likely to stream than insert a piece of plastic or cartridge into a machine.
We can't save everything and unless our libraries are archives and have
unlimited space, de-accessing is the way to go.
On the other hand, other media such as books have longer lives since there is
nothing between the user and the medium. This same ED  wants to get rid of all
the "old" books- mostly religious reference books. So far I've been able to
keep her hands off those.

Have you all tossed your VHS collections? I’ve kept ours because we still have
equipment to play them. But really, is it past time to toss them? Any criteria
for keeping some? People don’t even use DVDs or CDs anymore. In our large (22k
items) collection we have lots of both. I’d be interested in hearing opinions
and experience of others.

[ha-Safran] pages needed

Our new rabbi brought to my attention that Nehama Leibowitz, Studies in
Bereshit /Genesis, translated and adapted from the Hebrew by Aryeh Newman,
fourth revised edition, World Zionist Organization, 1981. Is missing pages
289-320.

I would be extremely grateful if someone could send me those pages so that I

[ha-Safran] Manuscript Committee opening

2021-06-06 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran

There is currently an opening on the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee.
The Committee reviews unpublished manuscripts of Jewish literary fiction for
ages 8-13 using a standard set of criteria. The winning manuscript (there is
not always a winning manuscript) receives a cash prize. In the last few years
several of the manuscripts have been published by both small presses and large
publishing houses. The committee consists of 5 members plus a chairperson. The
judging takes place in early winter after the December 31 deadline. For more
details about the award visit the AJL website. The committee membership
represents AJL's diverse geographical, philosophical, and professional
diversity. Current members of another award committee are not eligible. If you
are interested in serving on this committee (a five year term) please send me a
resume and writing samples, preferably reviews of children's books.
Please reply off list as soon as possible

[ha-Safran] immigration question

Hello,great problem solvers,

I have a patron who is doing some genealogical research. He wants to know why
people did not leave their countries. He is especially interested in Russia.

I know anecdotally what the reasons might be but can't find any substantial
research articles as he requested.
Any suggestions?

Does anyone have a copy of the video of The Cafeteria by Singer. World Cat

It looks like it was never made into a DVD. The item is no longer available for
purchase as far as I can tell.
Of course, I'd take it in any form.

If so, would you be willing to lend it to me for use in a class?

Eric Kimmel wrote When Mindy Saved Hanukkah about a tiny family who rescues
the Hanukkah candle in the face of a big cat but Mindy is not a mouse. However,
there is a grandfather and it's set in the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Great
Story nut wrong holiday. You could probably adapt it for Passover.

Or it could be The Passover Mouse but there's no Mindy or synagogue, as I
remember.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Looking for specific Passover picture book

I want to find a book that I used to use as a script for play theater. I'm
hoping someone out there in the world of children's Jewish picture books will
know it.It takes place in a synagogue, I believe located on the Lower East Side
of NY, where a family of (Jewish) mice live behind the wall. When the family
realizes that there is chametz on the top shelf of the Aron HaKodesh, the girl
mouse in the family is the heroine that outwits the synagogue cat, with the
help and support of her grandfather, and gets the chametz. Does this ring any
bells?

This question was posed to AJL on our Facebook page. Does anyone know the
answer?

"My daughter just got engaged and I'd like to send her a book I remember from
at least 30 years ago--maybe much longer.
It's a children's book in which an eastern European Jew is trying to plan a
wedding and gets input on what is the best thing to serve--pure spring water
comes up as a good option because it's so good.
Does anyone know what I'm thinking of? Do you remember the author and title?"

[ha-Safran] pages needed

2020-08-14 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
A congregant desperately needs pages from a book for a reading on Rosh
Hashanah. Recordings are being done on Tuesday. Our copy is long overdue and I
have no hopes of getting it back; local libraries have none, and there's not
enough time to order.
If a generous librarian could send pages, it would be most appreciated. There
are a lot, so I understand if it is impossible but I told her thast i'd try.
The book is Beginning Anew: a women's companion to the High Holidays by Reimer
and Kates.
The pages are 127-201, but especially 127-145 and 174-200.
Thank you.

What a great conference. Thanks you to everyone who made it happen. I'm sure it
wasn't easy and it was disappointing not to have th conference in Evanston.

But though we lost some things, the gain seemed to be immense. So many more
people were able to attend and the virtual platform allowed last minute
additions to the program without scrambling for time and space.
And getting there was so easy- no delays and comfortable accommodations.

I second the suggestion of OPALS. It’s also reasonably priced and the tech help
is very responsive. It’s also pretty easy to learn.

We have been using OPALs, if it is within your
budget. It will printout labels for the barcode,
card pocket, card (if you're using the latter two),
tell you when an item is overdue, creates reports
etc.

I've volunteered to help get my synagogue's library in order. There are two
parts to the collections. The adult reference materials are held in the chapel
and will be checked out on an honor system; the children's library is in a room
that is being converted into an official library. Of course my synagogue will
be joining AJL.

Another shul member who already works in a public school will be in charge of
children's collection. She wanted to know what program works best for a
collection of about 1,000 title. We want to be able to check out books using a
scanner, so I'd also appreciate a suggestion as to what scanner you'd recommend.

Hi Friends,

I am trying to recall how we used microfiche before email. If someone in the
1970s wanted to research newspapers what was the process? In my recollection it
started with looking up the topic in a large reference book, locating the
appropriate article and ordering the film from the research office in the
library. What I don’t remember is how we made copies of the film from the
reader. I’m working on a project and I want to be sure I am accurate.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: [ha-Safran] Younger Borrowers

2018-10-22 Thread Aileen Grossberg via Hasafran
Well said, Rachel.
I do basically the same with a letter home, but I do make it clear that the
parent is responsible for lost items. The Library can bill the parents as part
of the regular billing procedure.
Because the library is not staffed a good part of the time, the preschool is
the only part of the school that has regular check-out time. Everyone else is
on the honor system.
I must say that the little kids -and their parents- are much more responsible
about returning items than the grown-ups are.

div.yiv9848550227WordSection1 {} #yiv9848550227 I’m struggling to fathom why
any school, synagogue or community center library that maintains a circulating
children’s collection would create obstacles that would prevent children from
checking out books.  Why do you need an OK from a responsible adult?  My
children check out library books from their public school library and I have
never been asked to provide consent.  It is part of the curriculum.  I would
doubt that day school librarians require parental consent to use the school
library. I’m not sure why a supplemental Hebrew School ay a synagogue (or JCC)
should be viewed any differently.     As I wrote to Lee privately, children at
our synagogue begin checking out books from the Library starting with the
3-year-old preschool classes and continuing with all of the religious school
classes PK-7th grade.  At the beginning of the school year we enter all of the
students into our system. We also send home a letter to the parents, letting
them know their children will be checking out books, explaining the library
program, and inviting them to visit with their children to check out even more
books.  During the 2017-2018 school year, religious school students checked out
540 items and our preschool students checked out 911 items.  Over 98% were
returned before the summer.  Close to 1500 hundred Jewish books went into
Jewish homes – this is what we are all about.  I consider the loss of a couple
dozen books each year the cost of doing business.  Moreover, most of the
missing books are eventually found or returned.  (I also look at it as natural
weeding!).      I really discourage you from creating lots of rules and
policies.  It will just make more work for you and make the library less
inviting, less accessible, and less used!    Feel free to contact me if anyone
has any questions or wants to discuss further.  I am also happy to share our
circulation policies.    Rachel Kamin, Director The Joseph and Mae Gray

Regarding a cut-off age for lending, their as a wide range of opinion. One

Re: [ha-Safran] Children's books

2018-03-28 Thread Aileen Grossberg
I may be unorthodox but I classify picture books about holidays and Israel in
with the non-fiction although the MARC record says fiction. Patrons-especially
teachers or kids- browsing are more likely to find items if they are all
together because they don't use the OPAC

Books that are just stories I classify as JE (to mimmic our public library) and
file by author.

Of course some items are questionable . I use my judgement.

[ha-Safran] Flood. Help!

2018-01-09 Thread Aileen Grossberg

This morning a water main in our building burst, flooding the carpeted library
and other spaces. Fortunately, the building was occupied and I was in the
library so the flooding was caught immediately. However, it took some time to
find and shut off the main. Consequently there were several inches of water
absorbed by the carpet and standing on the floor. From what I could se, the
water did not come up to book level.

They have begun extracting water and have set up heavy duty dehumidifiers.
Walls will have to be opened and replaced to prevent mold and the carpeting
will have to be pulled up. Of course, all the bookcases will have to be
detached from walls, emptied and books boxed. The restoration company that was
called in said that all the ( custom made to fit the space, oak) bookcases and
other furniture (tables, chairs)would need to be trashed.

Having gone through something similar to this about 12 years ago, I question
this opinion.

What have other people's experiences been with using wooden bookcases that have
stood in water for a day or two?

All I can see are $ which we don't have for similar quality replacement.

Any suggestions for vendors for replacements if we have to? The company we
originally dealt with doesn't seem to be around anymore.

[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee Opening

2017-04-27 Thread Aileen Grossberg

The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee will soon be starting to evaluate
manuscripts for the 2018 award.

We have an opening on the committee. Members read, evaluate, and choose a
manuscript that fits the award’s criteria. For specific information on the
Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award and criteria, please go to the AJL website.

Committee members must be able to meet deadlines, have experience in evaluating
books and be familiar with children’s literature although they need not be
working in the field of children’s literature.

If you are interested in choosing the next great Jewish themed children’s
book, please send a resume and 2 writing samples to aido...@aol.com

The committee is especially interested in members from the South and Midwest.

The bulk of the committee work is done between October and mid-January.__

Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

2017-01-05 Thread Aileen Grossberg
It would be a wonderful accomplishment and help mightily when weeding older
books from small libraries like mine. I am often hesitant about discarding
older books which no longer have a place both in use, interest, or physical
self space in my library but I would keep for historic reasons if they appeared
to be last copies.

Subject: Re: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

I had a similar idea about creating a database of Jewish resources way back in
1980, when I was AJL President. I invited colleagues from academic/archival
libraries, synagogue/school/center libraries, Bureau of Jewish Education
directors, Jewish publishers, and others. We called the committee, “Creation
of National Jewish Bibliographic Data Base.” We discussed it for quite awhile
via the U.S. mail. (We didn’t have the luxury of the Internet or emails
then!). We met at national conventions and once even in my Library in Los
Angeles. It was of great interest. I remember that we reached the point of
discussing potential funding sources!

BUT, then, the 1982 Lebanon War occurred, and all funding priorities were for
Israel's defenses, of course, and none for future resources. I think I may
still have the correspondence hard copies - but doubt that it would be of much
use from 34 years ago.

I don’t recall hearing anything more about this idea, but I’m long retired from
the AJL Board.

I like to keep current - thus my joining this ha-Safran discussion. I still
think it's a very very worthwhile project and, with today’s technology, it
seems very doable.

Best of luck to you.
B’Shalom,
Barbara

Subject: [ha-Safran] Questions for Jewish Librarians

A member of the board of the Jewish Virtual Library posed these questions if
anyone can share their thoughts:

I wanted to know if

1. there is a website which combines all digital catalogues from Jewish
libraries around the world, which would allow complex searches, such as "show
me all books on Theodore Herzl's childhood within a 50 mile radius of Los
Angeles"

2. Would Jewish librarians want such a site constructed if not available?

Re: [ha-Safran] Bookplates

2016-07-28 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Toby et al,

I only use bookplates when someone has either physically given a book ,requests
a plate, or we have conducted a targeted fund raising opportunity (.e.g.when we
purchased a full set of Talmud)

For general monetary donations to the library, we list them in our bulletin and
I keep a record. I've not had any objections.

Unfortunately, I've never been able to get a children's birthday club or the
like off the ground. If the library had such a thing, we would use plates in
the books.

Sometimes when I need to put bookplates in items, I put them in basinal new
books that are already in circulation. No one seems to mind.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Bookplates

Dear Synagogue Librarians:

I would like to hear thoughts on the value and continued usage of bookplates.
We have two library donor funds here: one adult and one children. My
children’s book purchases generally keep up with the number of donations and I
add bookplates honoring the donors in whatever way they have requested. The
kids love seeing the names and we even have a bookplate contest here every
year. However, I am about one year behind in adult books and this is because I
don’t buy nearly as many adult books anymore.

I am wondering if others are using bookplates for adult materials and if their
bookbuying matches their number of donors. I normally don’t include used
donated books to the bookplate unless they ask for a bookplate specifically.
Might the childrens’ library donors someday surpass the purchases as well? How
do we continue to honor memories, simchas and mitzvahs if our libraries are
transforming and our print collections getting smaller? I often encourage
people to purchase books from the wish list to give rather than money but this
rarely happens – not that I’m swamped with monetary donations either. I’m
tempted to just stop adding adult bookplates and not worry about it. ;)

Anybody else troubled with bookplate dilemmas? Thanks!

[ha-Safran] titles needed

2016-01-31 Thread Aileen Grossberg

Got a call from a grandmother who would like to suggest some reading to either
her grandchild or her daughter. The other grandparents are very involved
Christians and Jesus has been coming up in conversations at home. The
father-not Jewish- is very supportive of raising the child Jewish and has
bought in to religious school. He is not a practicing Christian. Daughter needs
some help with Jesus issue.

Can anyone think of books explaining Jesus for the child?
For parents, I have Olitzky How to raise a Jewish child. and some much
older books. Any suggestions there for something contemporary?

Thanks in advance, book heroes.

Re: [ha-Safran] Why not add, or switch to, reviewing manuscripts? - attn. Heidi Estrin

2015-12-08 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Yoel,

I am chairperson of the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Competition. This annual
competition is open to authors-unpublished in the genre of literary fiction for
ages 8-13.

We evaluate manuscripts that are submitted to the committee. These manuscripts
must adhere to a set of criteria that include literary excellence and Judaic
relevance.

As part of the prize for winning the competition, the winning manuscript is
submitted to an experienced literary agent (a member of AJL) for an evaluation.

Many of the submitted manuscripts have been published.

While there is no requirement on subject, many of the manuscripts deal with
unique aspects of
the Holocaust: people , settings, or experiences that have not been treated in
books for children.

However, most of the submissions are either only tangentially connected to or
have nothing to do with the Holocaust or what I call the sacred H of Jewish
children's books: heroes, holidays and Holocaust.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a market for many if these worthy
potential books.

I question if AJL can financially support a publishing program although the
idea is certainly worthy.

[ha-Safran] books to give away

2015-03-22 Thread Aileen Grossberg

Dr. Michael Kogan, longtime professor of religion and Chairman of the
Department of Religion and Philosophy at Montclair State University in
Montclair, New Jersey is retiring and moving from the area. He has an extensive
collection of books-thousands he says- on religion, many on Judaism. He is
looking to find homes for these books. Our small synagogue library cannot take
the collection as we have absolutely no space.

There is no list and Dr. Kogan does not use email except under duress.

So...if you are within driving distance and are interested in looking over his
books SOON, please contact me and I will forward the information to Michael.

[ha-Safran] Shema

2015-01-05 Thread Aileen Grossberg

Just found out I am participating in a family program on the Shema in just a
couple of days. I know I'll be doing the storytelling part. Any ideas beyond
The Bedtime Shema (which I think they have already experienced) or The Shema
inthe Mezzuzah. Everything else I've found is too old for the preschool group.

I thought about oneness or bedtime rituals although this is a morning program.

Any ideas will be most welcome. Since this'll be my fifth library program this
week, I'm kind of on overload.

Re: [ha-Safran] Source or citation for a Midrash

2014-02-02 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Could it be this story of the Baal Shem Tov?

A Story

Whenever the Jews were threatened with disaster, the Baal Shem Tov would go to
a certain place in the forest, light a fire, and say a special prayer. Always a
miracle would occur, and the disaster would be averted.

In the later times when disaster threatened, the Maggid of Mezritch, his
disciple, would go to the same place in the forest and say, Master of the
Universe, I do not know how to light the fire, but I can say the prayer. And
again the disaster would be averted.

Still later, his disciple, Moshe Leib of Sasov, would go to the same place in
the forest and say, Lord of the World, I do not know how to light the fire or
say the prayer, but I know the place and that must suffice. And it always did.

When Israel of Rizhyn needed intervention from heaven, he would say to G-d, I
no longer know the place, nor how to light the fire, nor to say the prayer, but
I can tell the story and that must suffice. . . . And it did.

Remember the story, tell it, pass it on.

Our Rabbi gave a sermon this Shabbat about religious observances that continue
even when Jews do not remember the place, the person (i.e., a Rabbi), or even
the prayer that has been passed from one generation to another. He thought it
might be midrash about the Golem of Prague. I do recall reading a story in
which this happens, but could not find it in our Golem titles or Midrash
collections. Does this admittedly incomplete reference question ring bells for
anyone? Any clues or citations would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [ha-Safran] synagogue library budget question

2013-02-11 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Speaking only for myself, but probably this applies to many others, too, I have
been the synagogue librarian for over 30(!) years. I have always paid full
dues...no discounts for anything. Like Emily, I consider it a donation as we
are very modest donors outside of dues.

Volunteers don't last long because they need rides to get to the library, they
don't want to be there when I need them, they don't like the jobs that I need
to have them do, or they want to get paid, etc. Our library exists on
donations only and those tend to be meager. I feel that the library is close to
the last item on the list, if not the last. And BTW, when we redid our building
a few years ago, the library was placed about as far away from activity as can
be. What is front and center as one walks in the front door-the gift shop.

However, when people actually go to the library, they are pleasantly surprised
by what we have.

I think we have been fighting this battle ever since I've been an AJL member. I
wish I had a solution.

I, too, am a degreed profesisonal. I have had some mild success with getting
more people to use the library by doing the following. Our library is in a back
corner; few people go there, but we have a large reception area outside the 2nd
floor sanctuary. I've set up a table with a revolving display of books.
Congregants may borrow books from the display. People would never go to the
library go to our branch and find some great reading.
One congregant said that he's reading fiction and never did before.

To sign out on Shabbat, they find their names on the Rolodex and paper clip
the book card to their name cards. Other times they can write their names on
the cards.I then file the cards on Sunday or Monday. I, too, have no funds to
computerize. When I think of all the time I've spent typing and filing, I
cringe.

I also write an almost weekly column for our cyberletter. I highlight books
that are related to the calendar, synagogue and world events, or just of
interest.

I have gotten our teachers interested int he library's resources by doing
storytimes for our preschool and trying to collaborate with the religious
school teachers.

Of course, most of this would be impossible were I still working fulltime.

Still, despite a lot of effort and publicity, probably fewer than 15% of our
congregation uses the library.

2012-08-01 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Well said. In addition, small synagogue libraries like mine tend to become
the repositories of many donated books that should really be trashed (yellowed,
water damaged, terribly outdated, etc) but people feel that they just can't
throw out a book and leave it to the library to do so. I've often found
shopping bags of books dropped off anonymously despite my policy of requesting
a list of titles. Usually the books all end up either in the trash or being
donated to one of the booksales run by local nonprofits. It's really time
consuming for a volunteer librarian to have to cull through this stuff in hopes
of finding one or two good donations.

Unfortunately in smaller libraries, including many synagogue libraries, the
items we are offered are not of the caliber that Yaffa and Zachary mention and
I have found people will not comply when I ask them for a list of the books. A
few have actually photographed the books, which does help. And libraries like
mine and SSC libraries are not set up to deal with rare materials or ephemera,
and it’s not our mission to collect such materials.

I also run a continuous book sale, but in the end if the books don’t sell then
we’ve taken the responsibility to dispose of them. So it’s often a fine
balancing act regarding donations.

To second Zachary’s approach:
I spent a 3 months sabbatical last spring going over 18,000 items offered by an
executor of a secular Jewish scholar’s library, who’s main interest was
political science. Turns out that his father (New York, Portland, Toronto and
Santa Monica) and grandfather (Lithuania) were scholar rabbis, avid readers and
activists in the Jewish community – and he had their libraries as well. I ended
up adding no more than 300 BOOKS to our collection, but the EPHEMERA that
reflected Jewish life in their communities was priceless and was placed in the
rare and special collections of our library.
And feeding the nosey treasure hunter in me is an added bonus…

My instinct is to resist these types of invitations, but (to quote the old New
York State Lottery slogan) hey, you never know. We certainly don't want to
accumulate massive numbers of duplicates that become _our_ problem (or Gifts
and Exchanges' problem), instead of the donor's. On the other hand, if donors
can provide lists that we can select from, that is helpful. (One of the first
questions I ask, when offered a book donation, is, May we be selective?)

Or, if we have a sense that the donor had intellectual interests that might
result in significant additions to our research collections, by all means let's
pursue the matter. My favorite example involved the library of a deceased
scholar of Hungarian Jewry, whose books on the subject greatly enriched the
holdings of the YIVO Library. I enjoyed meeting and chatting with the late
scholar's widow (an artist) as well.

And sometimes one encounters unexpected -- and welcome -- surprises. A couple
of years ago an acquaintance invited me to look over her father's books. He
had died a year or so earlier and the daughter was cleaning out his house. I
went there with not very high expectations and indeed the Judaica books on the
living-room shelves were fairly slim pickings. But then I went into the garage
and encountered a treasure trove of gray literature: vintage publications --
in Hebrew and English -- devoted to soil science, agricultural development, and
water resources in Israel in the 1950s and early 1960s. This is precisely the
sort of special collections material that we are collecting at Stanford. The
1950s-era Israeli children's magazines were a bonus. (My acquaintance's father
had trained as a soil scientist and lived with his family on an Israeli kibbutz
back then.)

Of course, we are always kind, courteous and respectful but tere is a lot of
junk that comes our way and sometimes there is a treasure which is one reason
not to decline donations. And it takes a lot of time to go through the bags and
boxes.

Unfortunately, however, I am finding that we are getting fewer and fewer loved
one's treasured volumes and more and more I'm downsizing and I just can't
throw out these old novels, outdated textbooks, torn kids' books, unattractive
Hebrew School books, etc. Reminds me of when I took over a public school
library some 20 years ago and found that not only had man not yet reached the
moon but Hawaii and Alaska hadn't yet become states.

I generally accept most offered donations for a number of reasons. There is
the you never know factor, already mentioned. My main consideration is
public relations to both congregants and those who are not affiliated. I am
also careful to mention our acquisitions policy and that the books, if
duplicates or unsuitable for the collection, will be offered first to our
rabbis and staff and then donated elsewhere. Because our institution is well
known and may be the only Jewish venue someone knows, my goal is to be as
courteous and empathetic as I can, especially with someone who is looking for a

Re: [ha-Safran] EJ 2nd edition

2012-07-23 Thread Aileen Grossberg
I bought EJ2 when it first came out. It was a stretch for my very small
donations only budget. Was it worth it? Probably not. Patrons haven't used the
set extensively. Frequently we refer to EJ1 also especially for illustrative
material. If you have a very active library, the purchase may make sense
especially if you have online access also but for a small , not too busy
library, save your money (until the deal is a real bargain), use the internet
and the earlier edition.

Subject: [ha-Safran] EJ 2nd edition

Collective wisdom (I really do love how that describes this group),

I just received an e-mail offering the 2nd edition of Encyclopedia
Judaica for $995. Clearly a bargain over the list price. My question
is to those of you who purchased this, especially synagogue
libraries. Do you feel that it's been a worthwhile purchase? Would
you recommend buying it?

Thanks in advance,
Amy Graham

Re: [ha-Safran] Educational media

2012-07-03 Thread Aileen Grossberg
Unfortunately non of the educational staff expressed interest so I ended up
tossing filmstrips (and video tapes) in both the synagogue and public school. I
do think even this outmoded technology has its advantages: being able to make
an image as large as the space permits, being able to show details because the
image is large, being able to stop and concentrate on one frame. Though it's
been some years since I used a filmstrip, there was a certain magic for young
children in the darkening of the room and then suddenly a picture appeared. I
guess it was the novelty of something they had not seen before as we used
filmstrips long after they had been replaced by tapes and then discs.

Maybe you can find a place for them in an institution that has not been able to
upgrade its technology.

What have you all done w/ educational filmstrips and slide sets?
Toss them? Convert them? Just save them?

[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award

2012-04-03 Thread Aileen Grossberg
The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Competition Committee has been deliberating
for some days and has finally reached a decision about the 2012 award. The
Committee felt that, while the crop of manuscripts was interesting and each had
some merit, none adequately met the competition's criteria. Consequently, no
award will be given this year.

However, 4 manuscripts were selected as Manuscripts of Merit. Each author will
receive a certificate and the titles will be listed on the website.

Look for more details about the manuscripts, the authors and the process in the
next AJL Newsletter.
