[ha-Safran] Fw: Big news from the Yiddish Book Center
- Forwarded Message - From: Aaron Lansky To: Haim Gottschalk Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at 12:03:15 PM ESTSubject: Big news! | To borrow from Sholem Aleichem, I have frishe nayes—fresh news—to share with you. | | | | Dear Haim, To borrow from Sholem Aleichem, I have frishe nayes—fresh news—to share with you. Sixteen months from now, on my 70th birthday, I will retire as president of the Yiddish Book Center. I wanted to let you and other friends know directly why I’ve come to this decision, who will succeed me, what I plan to do next, and what you can do to make sure the Center’s work continues long into the future. It’s hard to believe almost 45 years have passed since I took what I thought would be a two-year leave of absence from graduate school to save Yiddish books. At the time, scholars estimated just 70,000 volumes could still be found; we collected that number in six months and went on to recover 1.5 million. Over the years you helped us establish Yiddish collections at major libraries and place our titles online, where they’ve been downloaded five million times. You helped us find new ways to translate Yiddish books and bring them to English readers. We revolutionized Yiddish-language learning with a new, state-of-the-art textbook. We filmed thousands of hours of oral histories and produced podcasts, radio programs, an English-language magazine, and groundbreaking exhibitions. We launched Yidstock: The Festival of New Yiddish Music. And we introduced lively educational programs to bring Jewish history, literature, and culture to students of all ages. Along the way we also built our own “shtetl”: two connected, architecturally distinctive buildings that are welcoming, sunny, and full of life. Thanks to you and other loyal supporters we did all this with a balanced budget and not a penny of debt. Why would I want to retire now, when we’ve come so far and accomplished so much? The answer is because we have accomplished so much. Running the Center is the only job I’ve had since graduating college. For years I worked twelve hours a day, six days a week. I hoisted so many boxes of books onto my shoulder I required surgery to repair the damage. Although my devotion to the Yiddish Book Center remains undiminished, I can no longer lay claim to the extravagant energy of my younger years, when Yiddish speakers used to refer to me as “der yungerman,” the young man. Ecclesiastes teaches, “Lakol eys ulakol zman—To everything there is a season.” As proud as I am of what we’ve achieved, I recognize that the time has come to pass the torch to new leaders with vision, talent, and dreams of their own. Our board’s succession committee has been quietly preparing for this moment for a long time, and I think you’ll be pleased to learn that my successor will be our executive director, Susan Bronson. Susan and I have worked closely together for 14 years, and she’s played a pivotal role in bringing the Center to where we are today. With a PhD in history and years of experience, she is a natural leader: strong, strategic, collaborative, and resourceful. She’s well-liked by our staff and widely respected in the Jewish world, where she served as chair of the Council of American Jewish Museums. She has a gift for forging strategic partnerships, and she’s eager to expand the Center’s work to younger constituents. Best of all, she already knows the Yiddish Book Center inside and out. I share our board’s confidence that she’ll bring a steady hand and new inspiration to what is already an uncommonly sound and successful organization. As for me, I won’t be leaving the Center completely. Instead, I’ve agreed to stay on for two more years after I retire as president in the part-time role of senior advisor. My plan is to assume special assignments and, when possible, to resume teaching, writing, and other intellectual pursuits that I had to put on hold while building the Center. As you know, the Yiddish Book Center has never stood still, and we’re not about to start now. During my remaining time as president, I promise to do everything in my power to make sure the organization we built, the books we saved, and the culture we reclaimed will endure. My to-do list for the next sixteen months is an ambitious one. I want to expand our educational programs, to translate more Yiddish books into English, and to roll out the Universal Yiddish Library: our plan to pool our digitized holdings with those of other major libraries and make Yiddish, once in danger of extinction, the most accessible literature on Earth. I’m also looking forward to traveling with Susan to visit with members and tell you more about our exciting plans for the years ahead, and to lay the groundwork for a campaign to increase our endowment to $100 million before our 50th anniversary in 2030. All that, however, still lies ahead. For now, what I want to say as I

Re: [ha-Safran] Sad news
My wife and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Adaire Klein, may her name be for a blessing. I've known Adaire for many, many years, since I was in high school. Adaire was a very kind and special person - she helped me expand my knowledge of the Holocaust, especially when I was a student at YULA HS. When I joined the AJLSC, Adaire helped me with programming events and gave me guidance and mentorship in librarianship. Moreover, I have many fond memories of Adaire and Manny hosting my wife and me many times, and being a grandparent after my daughter was born. May Adaire's name be for a memory. Barukh Dayan ha-Emet. A recent book from Columbia University Press broadens our perspective of his legacy, by reflecting on the role he played in reshaping Jewish studies in the United States from his perch in Morningside Heights. Collecting articles from numerous scholars to mark the 90th anniversary of Baron’s arrival at Columbia University, this book features analysis of his impact as a public intellectual, the creator of the first academic center to study Israel, and champion of libraries. Rebecca Kobrin and Michelle Chesner will discuss the recent book and how it informs Baron’s important impact on Columbia University and the world. Rebecca Kobrin is the Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History at Columbia University, where she is also co-director of Columbia’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies. Her book Jewish Bialystok and Its Diaspora (2010) was awarded the Jordan Schnitzer prize. She is the editor of Chosen Capital: The Jewish Encounter with American Capitalism (2012) and is coeditor with Adam Teller of Purchasing Power: The Economics of Jewish History (2015). Her forthcoming book, A Credit to the Nation: East European Immigrant Bankers and American Finance, 1870–1930, will be published by Harvard University Press. This session is sponsored by AJL’s RAS Division and is open to members and the public. All are welcome. Re: [ha-Safran] Baruch Dayan Emet: Former AJL President, Barbara Leff
I am so sorry to hear of Barbara Leff's passing. She was a great friend and mentor to me when I worked at the Ostrow Library at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles. Barbara provided me guidance when I served as the AJLSC President and I learned how to program events from Barbara when I served as the AJLSC VP for Programming. Barbara was a remarkable person and librarian. Very calm, patient, extremely knowledgeable, which she was always more than happy to share. I think of her fondly. May Barbara's memory be for a blessing. I have retained much of the correspondence between us regarding the development and use of the System over the years. I would like to share with you an entry of hers in Hasafran (oct 12, 1995): “ Here is a brief anecdote to illustrate: I converted my library collection to Elazar more than 25 years ago because my mentor, Dorothy Schroeder (of blessed memory), considered it the best for synagogue libraries. My rabbi confirmed this not long after that, when he came into our library to browse. I asked him if I could show him around and he said, "What for? Everything is here -- just the way I think about Judaism -- it's all in order for me!" I've never forgotten his response, and I've found again and again that materials arranged by Elazar are logically 'in order.' Another reason I like Elazar is because I learned an overview of Judaism through the Elazar scheme (as a library volunteer with limited library knowledge for 10 years prior to getting my masters). Elazar pulls the Judaica body of knowledge together in its outlines and explanations. Elazar's logical sequences and orderliness allows a non-schooled library person to acquire a valuable understanding of Judaism, and, as you are aware, many synagogues ask volunteers or librarians with minimal Judaica background to manage their libraries. Also, non-professional librarians could not possibly handle the many LC cataloging tools in order to catalog their books. Elazar is a single, slim volume, easy to handle and use, and indexed.” May her memory be blessed David Elazar Rishon LeZion, Israel __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran*40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html__;JQ!!KGKeukY!hGAzNKAcfoqp3ky8orOfc2xT4aNClHMTq-NeMhMlpY0BF0n1Z5pE86pNT9D50ERw2Eertbnd5pzzfDA$ Earlier Listserver: https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran*40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html__;JQ!!KGKeukY!hGAzNKAcfoqp3ky8orOfc2xT4aNClHMTq-NeMhMlpY0BF0n1Z5pE86pNT9D50ERw2Eertbndj_35uc4$ AJL HomePage https://urldefense.com/v3/__http://www.JewishLibraries.org__;!!KGKeukY!hGAzNKAcfoqp3ky8orOfc2xT4aNClHMTq-NeMhMlpY0BF0n1Z5pE86pNT9D50ERw2EertbndbVYNwOs$ -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran __ Messages and opinions expressed on Hasafran are those of the individual author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) == Submissions for Ha-Safran, send to: hasaf...@lists.service.ohio-state.edu To join Ha-Safran, update or change your subscription, etc. - click here: https://lists.service.ohio-state.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran Questions, problems, complaints, compliments send to: galro...@osu.edu Ha-Safran Archives: Current: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.service.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html Earlier Listserver: http://www.mail-archive.com/hasafran%40lists.acs.ohio-state.edu/maillist.html AJL HomePage http://www.JewishLibraries.org -- Hasafran mailing list Hasafran@lists.osu.edu https://lists.osu.edu/mailman/listinfo/hasafran

I was thinking of this. One approach is to have a webpage on the AJL website that is somewhat a Farmers' Market of sorts ... but with a few modifications, such as only titles and contact information would be provided, without images. I "attended" ALA this year. Part of the time I had to work out a schedule around AJL. For the most part, I liked the presentations. I found them no less no more inspiring then last year. I do miss the in-person sessions, but was grateful for this opportunity. Unfortunately I missed Heidi's session, as I was on my to LC. Haim On Monday, June 29, 2020, 7:05:07 AM EDT, Elliot H. I did find a few of those programs only became available many hours or a day afterward, but was able to check back to view again or catch parts that I missed of the sessions that interested me. There were a number of engaging—and sometimes controversial—programs that I enjoyed. Of course, Heidi’s session, was absolutely a highlight.Wednesday, June 24Although, like other keynote speakers, I found the closing session featuring Natalie Portman, way too brief, I still enjoyed certain aspects of it including her discussion of some of the changes in the depictions of the critters in the stories in her debut children’s picture book, Natalie Portman’s Fables. And she was interviewed by Betsy Bird, Collection Development Manager, Evanston Public Library, who will be speaking at AJL Digital on Thursday on “Reviewing and Evaluating Picture Books.” In any case, I, too, would like to hear what others who took part in any part of the online ALA conference thought. Re: [ha-Safran] AJL STATEMENT ON RECENT EVENTS AT YIVO
Very powerful statement, Dina. Thank you. ~Haim On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, 9:19:11 PM EST, Dina Herbert via Hasafran wrote: The Association of Jewish Libraries is dismayed by the decision of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research to fire its librarians. The difficulty of funding is one that we feel deeply within the world of libraries and archives, with few funders and many institutions applying for the same funding. We would caution, however, that replacing expert librarians with non-librarians also has results that could impact an institution in the long run. There are the obvious concerns of divvying up the jobs of four employees among employees that already have full-time responsibilities. More than that, though, subject librarians are trained in the nuances of a particular area of research. The YIVO librarians had an expertise in Yiddish bibliography that, like YIVO’s Yiddish book collection, is unsurpassed, and the loss of their curatorial expertise is a loss for all YIVO users and for the collection. Librarians often have connections to colleagues in their area at other institutions, and can connect researchers with relevant resources around the world. This was made exceptionally clear through the joint partnership of the YIVO librarians with the National Library of Lithuania to integrate discovery for books in both collections. We certainly hope that the decision to terminate their librarians was a temporary move on YIVO’s part, and we look forward to hearing about how this august institution will maintain its reputation and unique library collections in the coming weeks and months. YIVO's decision to remove all Library staff is also a decision to remove themselves from the larger active Judaica library community. As the many responses from across the world have already shown in just a few days, we already see the loss to the entire Judaica library and scholarly communities. As the leading authority on Judaic Librarianship, AJL stands with the community in encouraging YIVO to reinstate the librarians to continue their critical work. Re: [ha-Safran] Judaica Librarianship off to a new start
Dear Racheli, Thank you for the update. You are doing a wonderful job as editor of the journal. ~Haim On Wednesday, January 1, 2020, 9:51:56 PM EST, Hasafran via Hasafran wrote: Dear AJL members, I have a short apology and a long explanation for you regarding the delayed publication of Judaica Librarianship’s new issue (#21). As you know, producing AJL’s scholarly journal is based on voluntary work. In 2018, I was first grappling with a new day job position and then went on a semester-long sabbatical. In 2019, I had a lot of post-sabbatical catch-up to do and while working on the content of issue #21, I was also engaged in a search for a new hosting service for the journal. Since we transferred JL to electronic publishing in 2013, we have hosted the journal content on the Digital Commons platform, owned and operated by bepress, a company that was established by academics to promote open access publishing and library repository solutions. We teamed up with bepress because they accommodated our needs, including the management of our delayed access publishing model (a 12-months exclusive access for AJL members) – but that came with a cost. In addition to the big-ticket annual fee, as all bepress costumers we learned from the media in early August 2017, that the company was purchased by Elsevier, one of the most aggressive commercial publishers in scholarly publishing (see the Scholarly Kitchen post: https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2017/08/02/elsevier-acquires-bepress/). Many of bepress customers moved away from Digital Commons since then and JL Editorial Board agreed that we should do so, too as AJL should not contribute to the for-profit publisher. Due to the reasons stated above I was not able to dedicate much time for this project until 2019, but now I am happy to report that we found a new hosting service for JL. The journal will move to its new home in a few weeks, after we migrate its structure, metadata, and articles; and the new issue will be published on the new platform. This move constitutes a major saving for AJL and would contribute to the sustainability of our organization. Furthermore, as many scholarly journals have done, I am happy to announce that JL Editorial Board and AJL Council unanimously approved my proposal to move the journal to complete open access publishing.* This initiative would expand the reach of JL to global readership even further than it did so far: Since the journal moved to electronic publishing, the 250 articles posted online were downloaded almost 39,000 times(!) and in 2019 alone, almost 7,500 downloads were recorded. Advancing to open access publishing is not only the right thing to do, as declared by an AJL Council member, but it also epitomizes the AJL Mission: The Association of Jewish Libraries is an international professional organization that fosters access to information and research in all forms of media relating to all things Jewish. The Association promotes Jewish literacy and scholarship and provides a community for peer support and professional development. I thank the JL Editorial Board, and AJL Council and Board for their strong and enthusiastic support and look for the continued support of AJL members in AJL and its scholarly journal. Please let me know if you have any questions. Stay tuned for the new issue and new platform announcement! Happy New Year, Rachel * “Open Access is the free, immediate, online availability of research articles combined with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment. Re: [ha-Safran] Leah Adler
This is very sad news. Barukh Dayam ha-Emet. Leah gave me first library job. At the end of my first year at YU I interviewed for a student position managing the front desk at the Gottseman library. Leah offered me the job that summer and I started at the start of my second year. I held this position for 6 years. I always looked forward to seeing Leah at AJL. We reconnected and shared memories. A wonderful person and a great leader. I will miss her very much. May Leah's memory be for a blessing. Throughout her illness, rather than talk about herself and her physical discomfort, Leah expressed concern for others--about the effect of her absence on their work loads. In the workplace, Leah was always disarmingly candid and honest; she never hesitated to bring up important issues, regardless of how challenging those issues were. Re: [ha-Safran] SSC Sessions at the conference
I had in mind SSC for my session on understanding what books and materials can be buried. Haim From: Michelle ChesnerTo: "hasafran@lists.osu.edu" Sent: Wednesday, March 1, 2017 2:23 PM Subject: [ha-Safran] SSC Sessions at the conference Dear Safranim, It has come to my attention that there are SSC members who were disappointed by the perceived lack of SSC sessions at the upcoming AJL conference in New York. I would like to correct this misconception, especially since members of the SSC worked particularly hard to provide exceptional programming for this group (including Kathy Bloomfield, Susan Kusel, and Heidi Rabinowitz and others). Exactly half of the sessions (all listed in slots C and D in the program) are geared toward SSC. I know that the detailed conference information has not been made public yet, and so I will cite some specific examples below: - More Than Just One Person’s Opinion: What Makes Good Book Criticism? (This session, organized by Elissa Gershowitz, includes interviews with Marjorie Ingall and Arthur Levine of Arthur A. Levine books) - Inspire new books: how librarians can make a difference - this includes discussions with Jewish book authors about recent publications (Tammar Stein, Anne Dublin, Jacqueline Jules, Barbara Bietz and Allison & Wayne Marks) - Accreditation and Advocacy (60 minutes with Rachail Kurtz on how to achieve AJL accreditation, followed by Kathy Bloomfield on "Advocating for your Library: What your Board Wants to Know" - Beth Braunstein will be giving a 60 minute session on "Jewish Values in Secular Literature." - The Holocaust Education session is SSC minded: it includes discussion of certification of Holocaust educators with Susan Dubin, building communities around Holocaust study; and a focus on Holocaust children's literature - Collaboration in building public (i.e. synagogue, center) Jewish libraries collections (including the Vilnius Jewish Public Library, which is equivalent to a Center library) - Lisa Silverman and Debbie Feder will speak about their new respective community and school libraries, and what went into building them - An incredible digital session focuses on digital tools in school libraries; education technology, and digital communites - all very much SSC related. And we will have a VERY special guest speaker at the first meal, presenting her upcoming graphic novel of her life story (geared toward teens, but of definite interest to synagogue and center librarians as well as schools). Details are still being finalized on that one, so I can't say more yet! I'm sure I left some items out, so I'll ask the programming committee (especially SSC members) to please chime in - but this is definitely a conference NOT TO BE MISSED. [ha-Safran] rare book bibliography
I am looking for a bibliography for early Hebrew printing something that is similar to Brunet's Manuel de Librarie et de l'Amateur de Livres. I have seen Shunami's Bibliography and I also BSA's Hebrew Incunabula of America(1940). Is there a work that provides a global census as well as/or an auction history of early Hebrew printing? And is there a bibliography that provides collation formula for such works?
