me of some of the Jewish folktales.

  Hello Hasafran,

A challenge for those of you who can spit out stories. I already looked in
the Jewish Storyteller and the AJL value finder.

I need a short story, folktale, midrash, children's book that takes place in
Cuba. It is for the short story book club.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  HI.
I have a Hebrew teacher who used the Hebrew language children's newspaper
"Sha 'ar" years ago as well as another callled "La Mishpacha" and she is
looking for old issues of either to use with her students, as well as any ideas
for newer types of publicaitons which may be available.
A search for both came up with a digital edition for "Sha 'ar" which is no
longer available.
If anybody has old issues of either they are willing to share in any way...or
ideas for newer 'easy' Hebrew children's current weekly or monthly current
event periodicals, please share ideas...

I am helping someone organize a small (less than 5,000 items) private lending

- Handle title and patron information in Hebrew;
- create bar codes;
- ability to code certain materials as restricted (for example, one new book
per checkout)
- generate reports including shelf list, overdue books, expired memberships

ResourceMate seems to be a good choice, but if anyone is happy using a
different software, I'd love to hear about your experience. Also, converting to
a computer-based system will be challenging, so ease of use is a priority.

2015-05-06 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Dear Ellen (and Esteemed Colleagues):

If you do not own a copy of Sharon Barcan Elswit's The Jewish Story Finder, run
and get one. The 2012 edition includes 668 Tales that are listed by subject
and source.

In Elswit's 2009 edition, there is a list of several versions of The Dream and
the Treasure, where a poor man dreams of a treasure. He goes to seek it out,
and some kind of guard is there, who tells the man about HIS dream of a
treasure buried in a poor man's house.

Some Jewish versions:
The Dream - Nina Jaffe - The Mysterious Visitor
Reb Eisik's Treasure - Ellen Frankel - The Classic Tales
The Treasure - Uri Shulevitz
The Treasure - Howard Schwartz - Miriam's Tambourine

A Secular version:
Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share by Kevin O'Malley (Walker and Company, 2007)

For the It Could Always Be Worse, I love using Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern.

One more:

Feathers used to illustrate the harms of gossip

Forest, Heather. Feathers. Illustrated by Marcia Cutchin. Little Rock:
August House Little Folk, 2005. ISBN: 0-87483-755-3. Rhyming text and
colorful illustrations teach that hurtful words cannot be taken back easily
once they are spoken. The author credits Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berdichev with
this tale.

Rothenberg, Joan. Yettele's Feathers. New York: Hyperion Books for Children,
1995. ISBN: 0-7868-2081-0. The town gossip learns her lesson when the rabbi
tells her to cut open a pillow and bring him all the feathers. Yettele
realized that words cannot be taken back.

Waldman, Debby. A Sack Full of Feathers. Illustrated by Cindy Revell.
Vancouver: Orca Book Publishers, 2006. ISBN: 978-1-55143-332-5. Yankel
loves to go around his village of Olkinik telling stories, often about other
people. One day the rabbi gives Yankel the job of putting a feather on every
doorstep in the village. Yankel completes this task as he thinks of the
stories he will tell his schoolmates. When he returns to the rabbi's house, he
is instructed to collect all the feathers and bring them back. As hard as he
tries, Yankel cannot do it. From this exercise, Yankel learns that you cannot
take back a story once it is told - it goes where it goes, and you cannot say
where or how or when.

Re: [ha-Safran] Looking for holocaust literature and analysis

2015-01-28 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
The Book Thief, by Marcus Zusak, is not a Holocaust novel per se, but it has
literary.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, has been criticized severely for
its naïve portrayal of Auschwitz.

The Morris Gleitzman series of Once, Then, Now is also written from a naïve
perspective.

My Mother's Secret, by J.L. Witterick, is based on a true story about hiding
people during the Holocaust, and is age appropriate.

I am reviewing (for the AJL Newsletter) a Cambridge University Press book
entitled Literature of the Holocaust, edited by Alan Rosen. It is a survey of
the literature as well as literary analysis and criticism.

Re: [ha-Safran] Jewish Food Fiction

2014-10-13 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Esteemed Colleagues:

If you do not have a copy of Jewish American Literature: A Guide to Reading
Interests by AJL member Roz Reisner, RUN and get one. This is my go-to
reference for these kinds of questions.

There are several books that fit:

Heartburn by Nora Ephron is about Rachel Samstat, a successful cookbook
author, who is seven months pregnant with her second child when she learns that
her husband is having an affair and plans to leave her. Food, therapists,
friends, family, and politics all come into hilarious focus as Rachel matures
and learns some lessons about love. Recipes included.

Club Revelation by Allan Appel : The lives of 3 interfaith couples, living on
the Upper West Side in Manhattan, are disrupted when an evangelical Christian
opens a cafeteria in their building, hoping to convert Jews.

More recently, Allegra Goodman's The Cookbook Collector:

Emily and Jessamine Bach are opposites in every way: Twenty-eight-year-old
Emily is the CEO of Veritech, twenty-three-year-old Jess is an environmental
activist and graduate student in philosophy. Pragmatic Emily is making a
fortune in Silicon Valley, romantic Jess works in an antiquarian bookstore.
Emily is rational and driven, while Jess is dreamy and whimsical. Emily’s
boyfriend, Jonathan, is fantastically successful. Jess’s boyfriends, not so
much.

National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author Allegra
Goodman has written a delicious novel about appetite, temptation, and holding
on to what is real in a virtual world: love that stays.

Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots by Jessica Soffer:

When 14-year-old Lorca is discovered cutting herself at school and is
suspended, her mother decides to send her to a private school. Hoping to
dissuade her, Lorca sets out to find a recipe for Masgouf, an obscure Iraqi
dish that her mother, a chef, once said was the most delicious thing she had
ever tasted. Lorca’s quest leads her to Victoria, an elderly Iraqi-Jewish
immigrant who can teach her how to make the dish. Both lost souls, the two bond
and soon begin to suspect there is a connection between them larger than that
of teacher and student. Told in Victoria and Lorca’s alternating first-person
voices, the character-driven novel focuses, sometimes microscopically, on the
characters’ troubled emotional lives. The slow pace of the developing story
sometimes tests the reader’s patience but nevertheless offers fully realized,
multidimensional characters who invite empathy and compassion. --Michael Cart
-in Booklist

The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult has a character who is Jewish and a baker.
She describes the baking process in the book. This character's grandmother was
a Holocaust survivor, and the Minka's (the grandmother) recipes are on
Piccoult's website:
http://www.jodipicoult.com/the-storyteller.html#recipeshttp://www.jodipicoult.com/the-storyteller.html#recipes

Plot summary:
Sage Singer is a baker, a loner, until she befriends an old man who's
particularly beloved in her community. Josef Weber is everyone's favorite
retired teacher and Little League coach. One day he asks Sage for a favor: to
kill him. Shocked, Sage refuses—and then he confesses his darkest secret – he
deserves to die because he had been a Nazi SS guard. And Sage's grandmother is
a Holocaust survivor. How do you react to evil living next door? Can someone
who's committed truly heinous acts ever atone with subsequent good behavior?
Should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren't the party who was
wronged? And, if Sage even considers the request, is it revenge…or justice?

  Lauren,.
Since you are intrigued let me give you the background:
Tamar Myers is a Jew by choice, born to a Jewish father and a Mennonites
mother. She wrote many YA books, but, also has a series called Pennsylvania
Dutch mysteries with recipes. There is not much Yiddishkiet in the book and the
recipes are not for typically Jewish food, but the narrator is an
Amish/Mennonite who is married to a Jewish guy who has an “interesting” Jewish
mother. Myers knows how to make you laugh. I take her books for long flights.
Try the DEATH OF PIE or BUTTER SAFE THAN SORRY or BATTER OFF DEAD.
You can tell by the titles that Myers has a great sense of humour.
  ENJOY,
  Amalia

[ha-Safran] Master Torah - curriculum for learning Talmud, Mishnah and Rambam

2014-02-20 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Esteemed Colleagues:

Recent posts have asked for suggestions for study programs or guides for
several Jewish texts. It is my pleasure to recommend Master Torah:
www.MasterTorah.comhttp://www.mastertorah.com/.

There are currently curriculums for Talmud, Mishnah, and Rambam's Mishnah Torah
(the new cycle of study begins February 23). An ambitious curriculum that
includes Tanach, Nevi'im and Ketuvim is currently being developed. Each
curriculum has several tracks based on time commitments. The lessons are in
English, and are appropriate for all ages.

The Master Torah system facilitates active learning and better retention
through methodical review and frequent testing. This innovative method is
structured for gaining a clear basic understanding of the material; reviewing
and retaining the material in a systematic, organized manner; and maintaining a
long-term cyclical review of all previously learned material.

The beauty of Master Torah is that all the lessons are available for download
from the website and can be utilized by individual users, in a classroom, or in
a school resource room. The curriculums also include thousands of review
questions and tests.

Rabbi Meir Pogrow, the founder and director of Master Torah, has received
approbations for Master Torah from HaRav HaGaon Arieh Leib Shteinman, Rosh
HaYeshiva Ponovezh, Bnei Brak; HaGaon Noach Weinberg ZTL, Rosh HaYeshiva Aish
Hatorah, Jerusalem; HaRav Zev Leff, Rav and Mara d'Asra - Moshav Matisyahu,
Rosh HaYeshiva Yeshiva Gedolah Matityahu; and other noted rabbis.

If you have questions or want additional information, please contact Master
Torah at i...@mastertorah.commailto:i...@mastertorah.com.

B'vracha,

Kathe Pinchuck

Re: [ha-Safran] idea for kick-off event for synagogue-wide read

2012-08-27 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Hi Hillary,

I don't know where you are located, but the Israeli Consulate has a speaker's
bureau. They may be able to help you find someone.

Subject: [ha-Safran] idea for kick-off event for synagogue-wide read

  Hi all,

Last time I wrote, my synagogue was in the process of selecting a book for
a synagogue wide read. The book we eventually chose is: Self-portrait of a
Hero: The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu. The children of the congregation
will read age appropriate books about heros. I am now trying to plan a
kick-off event for the adult members of the congregation to get them excited
about reading the book. I thought of having a member of the Israeli Defense
Forces come and speak, but am having no luck so far. I am trying to contact
the director/producer of the film Follow Me based upon the book, but no luck
with that either so far. If anyone has any idea for a program (it doesn't have
to be a long proram - 20-30 minutes will do), I would greatly appreciate it if
you would share it with me.

  Thanks,
  Hillary Finkel

[ha-Safran] Library Management System for Small Hebrew Library

2012-08-23 Thread Kathe Pinchuck
Esteemed colleagues:
A friend of mine is looking for a library management system (cataloging, etc.)
for a small Haredi elementary school in Israel. Most titles are in Hebrew, and
it is expected that there will be less than 2,500 titles.
Any suggestions, experience, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

[ha-Safran] Fw: holocaust book suggestion

2012-08-22 Thread Kathe Pinchuck

Have you looked at the books by Aranka Siegal? Upon the Head of a Goat was a
Newberry Honor Book, and her other two books are also excellent. I would
suggest them for 9th grade and up.

She does not deal directly with Nazi atrocities, but I think the books are
important because they detail what life was like before World War II.

Eva Moses Kor wrote a book dealing with her experiences: Surviving the Angel of
Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz. This book has a lot more
graphic descriptions. In conjunction with the book, there is a movie, Forgiving
Mengele, about Eva Kor and how she goes back to Auschwitz and reads her
statement. Great subject for discussion.

Continuing with the book and movie theme, Salvaged Pages: Young Writers'
Diaries of the Holocaust edited by Alexandra Zapruder is a good choice. The
value of this book is that you can pick the selections you think are
appropriate for your group. HBO made a movie based on this book: I'm Still
Here: Real Diaries of Young People Who Lived During the Holocaust. The diary
selections are read by celebrities like Ryan Gosling and Elijah Wood. Also
great for discussion and expanding into geographic and historical context.

I am looking for a needle in a haystack and thought you might help:

I'm searching for a holocaust novel or memoir appropriate for an English
class in a Bais Yaakov high school. It must be age appropriate regarding
reading level (9th to 11th grades), appropriate for a religious girls' school,
and well written for an English classroom.

I've done research and so far have only come up with books that are for a
younger, more middle school, audience.

  Thanks!
  Leah Friedman
