Re: [HG] Introduction

2008-09-08 Thread Gary Plazyk

Hi, Jim!

Welcome to the list! There's lots of good information here.

Since you're in the NW Indiana - Chicago - SE Wisconsin area, please consider
joining the Midwest Hurdy Gurdy Yahoo! group, too, at
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/ChicagoHG/ - I think everybody there is
also a member here, but we use the Yahoo group to discuss local events like our
annual get-together and the University of Chicago Folk Festival presentation we
did this past spring.

Very best regards,

-Gary P. (near Marengo IL, between Elgin and Rockford IL)

hi i am jim i have been playing HG for about 13 years.
i was enchanted by the sound when i first heard one.

i have an olympic apprentice i love
the sweet mellow  sound... it has served me well for these many years.
as i worked local area ren faires.
how ever i am looking to upgrade to a full size instrument mine is
only about 1 1/2 octaves which leaves me short for some tunes.
if i do find a good instrument to upgrade to i would probably sell the
Olympic... am i allowed to do that on this venue?

i play a lot of different styles from scottish pipe tunes to the french stuff...
i like to pretty much ignore the dog. just personal preference. however, i have
been know to use it now and then on some tunes...

[HG] Introduction of Mel and Ann Dorries of Hurdygurdycrafters

2008-02-13 Thread Melvin Dorries
We would like to take a moment and introduce ourselves.

I, Mel Dorries and my wife Ann both enjoy working with wood and have
realized our dream of crafting instruments in a woodshop attached to our old
white farmhouse in Michigan. The beginnings of classical guitars hang from the
shop walls and parts line the shelves, while several hurdy-gurdies lie
patiently on the 500 lb. maple workbench awaiting the next phase of
construction.
Our goal at Hurdy-Gurdy Crafters is to offer resonant and finely built
hurdy-gurdies, a tribute to the generations before who have passed this
historical instrument down to us. We presently offer both finished gurdies and
parts for the musician-builder. In the near future we will offer a quality kit
for those who, like us years ago, want to build their own but lack the
experience and could use a little help. We are working on plans for several
styles. As interest in the hurdy-gurdy grows, so does the opportunity to pass
along the heritage of this intriguing instrument. You may read more about us at
the Mel Bay site :

  Thank you

[HG] Introduction

2007-08-25 Thread ianc
Hello all. I'm excited to be back on the list. My name is Ian Clemons and I
live in Portland Oregon. I posted for a few months back in 2003 before
attending the Over the Water festival for the first time. I'll be attending
again this year and I'm looking forward to getting more buzz back in my life.

I'm very interested in the folk music of continental Europe. I especially like
Breton music and the folk music of Spain. La Musgana is my favorite band...for
now.

I primarily play Irish tunes on the fiddle, but have taken-up the G/C diatonic
accordion over the past year or so. I don't have a 'Gurdy yet, but am on the
list to get one built. Hopefully one or more of you Festival goers will have a
used one in your trunk for sale!

When I am able to tear my attention away from musical pursuits, I work as a
Physician Assistant in an Emergency Room and am Dad to my 7- and 4-year-old
daughters.

Thanks,

Ian Clemons
Portland, OR.

I would love to know more about Breton music. I also like La Musgaña. My
favourites from Spain are Jose Angel Hevia, Llan de Cubel and Berroguetto. I
also like Cristina Pato, Susana Seivane, etc I guess I like all of them.

Let me know if you're planning any east coast trips as I would love to put
some fiddle and accordion parts on recordings.
