Re: [hlds] Pinion Pot of Gold blacklist?

2013-02-19 Thread Mart-Jan Reeuwijk
I've been using MVPS Hosts for many years: http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
for a number of reasons like security, ad blocking, stats blocking etc.

One of the listed lines in it:

127.0.0.1 motd.pinion.gg #[Game Adverts]There is no reason to ban ppl who use
localized settings as their preference. People have the choice to disable the
MOTD, etc.

And actually that is not hacking your server. They block the content from
Pinion, which is a 3rd party who has nothing to do with the client but way more
with the server ('s owner). The client blocking the third party is entirely up
to them. They didn't change or access your server in any way inappropriate.

And btw, hacking in relation to the game is being able to overcome server
settings/limitations by using arbitrary means that change processes run-time.
Like the named aimbots wallhacks etc. Protection/insurance of client
settings and files is done via the sv_cheats and sv_pure var's. Its
exploiting when something is abused but not protected within the game. If its
downright a OPTION in the game to block MOTD's, its neither in regards to
blocking the pinion ads.

You state that its in the rules of the server that clients should view the
MOTD... but where/when do you state that? When the client connects? in the
MOTD? oh, no, thats already (ab)used with Pinion. so where/when then? in the
game's chat? more ads in-game midscreen ? I've always seen the MOTD as a place
where a server owner can put his banner, server rules and whatnot so players
have an idea what community and rules they have to play by. If you as server
owner replaced that with 1 big advert, then when are the players to find out
about the rules? not from your MOTD, and by the time you can advert them, they
are already past that.

Also, with Pinion crashing clients if they have the latest Flash installed, who
are you to crash somebody's game?

With what I read bout the pinion stuff, I'm just glad I disabled MOTD a long
time ago, it has been a pain crashing the game for a number of things over the
years, and there is never been anything there thats interesting enough. So far
I've not seen even 1 positive argument to enable it anyways. With positive one
I mean not saying:
- or otherwise you just look at a countdown
- or you get a ban
- etc.

Make it a privilege, that they get a donator slot or other perks for 3 hours
or something like that. Reward them doing good, don't punish the bad. I bet
you get then even discussions about it to get ppl to enable it. Instead of now
ppl recommending each other to turn it off, getting a hosts block, etc.

Join a Pinion enabled server, watch their video, and get a Neon-sign hat.

No idea how it can be that a advertizing company doesn't know how to please
their audience. Guess thats the gap between the positive message and actually
giving a positive experience.

Also, reading the SPUF, with Pinion ads running, it loads its video, and takes
so long to load the video, and then it still has to finish it. So thats 1-1,5
minutes instead of the 30 second countdown? pfff, 30 sec countdown any time
beats that timewaste.

[hlds] [TF2] Mass client timeouts since last update

2013-02-19 Thread Alex Kowald
Hey everyone, since last night's update I've been getting weird mass
client disconnects. To the client, the game appears to just disappear.
No crash dumps or freezing, it's just gone. To the server, most of
everyone is dropped: 'Dropped player from server (player timed out)'.
In console, the timeouts are usually preceded by messages like this:

Entity 4 (class 'player') reported ENTITY_CHANGE_NONE but
'm_hObserverTarget' changed.
Entity 13 (class 'player') reported ENTITY_CHANGE_NONE but
'm_nPlayerCondEx' changed.

Anybody else seen a problem like this? It's happening somewhat
frequently. Thanks for whatever help!

Yes, but you need to create a system that will add them to an
admin.cfg, or database with the A flag. However, what do you use to
manage it?

I was thinking of editing sourcebans, but I need a way to
remove old members after the time is up.

SourceMod has a built-in admin API. The admins.cfg and admins_simple.ini
files are loaded by admins-flatfile.smx. SourceMod Core doesn't grant any
admin permissions, it relies on plugins to do so.

You may be interested in the SQL admins system that is distrubuted with
SourceMod in the plugins/disabled folder. More info on that is available
here http://wiki.alliedmods.net/SQL_Admins_(SourceMod).

[hlds] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

2013-02-19 Thread Fletcher Dunn
The orangebox engine games (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike:Source, Day of
Defeat:Source, HL2:Deathmatch) are being upgraded to SteamPipe. Steam's
new-and-improved content delivery system. SteamPipe is currently used by most
games on Steam.

This change will impact server operators in at least two significant ways:

* You will use steamcmd instead of the HLDSUpdateTool to install/update
the server.

* The conversion will entail significant changes to the way the files
appear in the local filesystem on the server and client. The client no longer
uses GCF files. Instead, most assets are packed up into VPK, and those VPKs
are the same on the server and the client. The server no longer uses 1000's of
loose files.

We're using the TF beta to test these changes and identify the bugs, and give
everybody a chance to make sure their favorite mod or plugin will work in the
new system.

Everybody is encouraged to download the TF beta!

We've prepared an FAQ that discusses the details of the change and answers the
questions we anticipate:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7388-QPFN-2491

Please report gameserver related bugs in this mailing list.

Client bugs can be reported through this mailing list, or in the TF beta forum.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1038

Thanks for your help, and happy testing!

(And remember, playtime in the beta counts towards item drops in the release
game.)

Hello,

What is the time frame we have to prepare for this change?

I'm assuming the Sourcemod team is already aware, since this will most
likely break everything - but are we going to get a few days warning order
before this drops - i.e. will we know the exact day this change will go
into effect?

Subject: [hlds] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

The orangebox engine games (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike:Source, Day of
Defeat:Source, HL2:Deathmatch) are being upgraded to SteamPipe. Steam’s
new-and-improved content delivery system. SteamPipe is currently used by most
games on Steam.

This change will impact server operators in at least two significant ways:

· You will use steamcmd instead of the HLDSUpdateTool to install/update the
server.

· The conversion will entail significant changes to the way the files appear in
the local filesystem on the server and client. The client no longer uses GCF
files. Instead, most assets are packed up into VPK, and those VPKs are the same
on the server and the client. The server no longer uses 1000’s of loose files.

We’re using the TF beta to test these changes and identify the bugs, and give
everybody a chance to make sure their favorite mod or plugin will work in the
new system.

Everybody is encouraged to download the TF beta!

We’ve prepared an FAQ that discusses the details of the change and answers the
questions we anticipate:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7388-QPFN-2491

Please report gameserver related bugs in this mailing list.

Client bugs can be reported through this mailing list, or in the TF beta forum.

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1038

Thanks for your help, and happy testing!

(And remember, playtime in the beta counts towards item drops in the release
game.)

I stand corrected.

The new addons filesystem mapping is treating the Metamod:Source binary
as an override for the game's server dll.

We're working on a solution.

If you read the FAQ,
you'll see that it most likely will _not_ break everything (though I'm
still downloading and haven't tested yet).

SourceMod is agnostic to the content delivery system and they claim to
have made no further changes in the current beta.

Re: [hlds] [hlds_linux] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

I'm curious if it will be possible to download a Windows version on a Linux

SteamCMD? Will it be possible with TF2 and other games?

Re: [hlds] Pinion Pot of Gold blacklist?

2013-02-19 Thread Dave Rosca
We created a custom plugin that loads donors from a database and assigns
them admin flags on map start. They don't have to be connected to be given
admin flags. It's not too difficult to create. You can take a look at
sourcebans to see how it does it.

The benefit of creating your own donor plugin is you can create custom
natives that other custom plugins can use to check if a player is a donor.

Re: [hlds] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

2013-02-19 Thread Emil Larsson
This might be bit of a pip dream, but I wonder if it would be feasible to
make the move to SteamPipe during a optional update? As in, not adding any
actual content just yet but still moving everything to Steampipe, so Server
hosters can make the move at their own leisure. Cause as far as I can tell,
this will only change how the files are distributed for client/server but
won't really change the server workings that much.

I do assume the use of VPK's will speed up server updating.

Re: [hlds] [hlds_announce] SteamPipe is coming. Download the TF beta

2013-02-19 Thread Jesse Molina

Dear Valve

Please accept the following feedback for consideration. This feedback
is specifically limited to usage of the SteamCMD interface on GNU/Linux.

Please document command usage for SteamCMD. There doesn't seem to be any.

There is this document here, but it does not document the various
options and parameters which can be used with SteamCMD:

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/SteamCMD

If I do a ./steamcmd --help, nothing useful happens, which is probably
the first thing an educated administrator might do.

Exit codes? Document them.

Please stop trying to use the binary itself as a means of documentation.
Documentation is documentation. The binary isn't. I should not have
to type help arg1, help arg2, help arg2 subarg1 et-cetera on the
interactive menu-driven interface to find out how to use the app. I
can't imagine how painful this must be to implement and keep up to date.

Should I be using the steamcmd.sh script, or steam.sh, or just call the
steamcmd binary directly? steamcmd.sh magically appeared recently, and
nobody really knows why because you didn't communicate this change with
your user base. Those of us who had been using steam.sh, found it
stopped working because you changed it and we don't understand why.
Looking at the header comments does not make it apparent how these
scripts are to be used and why each is different. Please improve
communications when changes occur.

Design suggestion: Please stop trying to make SteamCMD an interactive
command-line interface. These are bad, sad, and wrong. Pros hate
interfaces like this because they are slow and painful and feel like
they were written to be a crutch for stupid people. Noobs can't use
them because a mouse isn't involved. Thus, you piss off everyone and
spend a lot of effort doing it. Why did you feel that bash needed to be
replaced? Do you really hate readline so much that you needed to
re-implement it? Something about those who feel the need to reinvent
unix are condemned to... yea.

While I appreciate this;
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_Application_IDs

How's about a ./steamcmd --listappids, like the old ./steam -command
list?

Please stop littering log files all over the place. I've already got a
steam.log file sitting in the steamcmd dir, and then you've got a logs
directory, which apparently wasn't good enough for this one log file.
And then there's that ~/Steam/logs/stderr.txt thing. Am I going to have
to write a cleanup script just to clean up these logfiles? And for F*ks
sake, why would you name your log files *_log.txt instead of just .log???

Thanks for your consideration.

The orangebox engine games (Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike:Source, Day
of Defeat:Source, HL2:Deathmatch) are being upgraded to SteamPipe.
Steam’s new-and-improved content delivery system. SteamPipe is
currently used by most games on Steam.

This change will impact server operators in at least two significant ways:

·You will use steamcmd instead of the HLDSUpdateTool to install/update
the server.

·The conversion will entail significant changes to the way the files
appear in the local filesystem on the server and client. The client no
longer uses GCF files. Instead, most assets are packed up into VPK, and
those VPKs are the same on the server and the client. The server no
longer uses 1000’s of loose files.

We’re using the TF beta to test these changes and identify the bugs, and
give everybody a chance to make sure their favorite mod or plugin will
work in the new system.
