Actually the Linux software is mostly for scanning shares. File/print
sharing is probably the #1 usage of Linux in business.

mcafee make a virus scanner for the mac as well - isn't worth buying since
Macs dont get viruses...

Mcafee generally make good software - so I would check it out.

Do you know a good virus scanner For Linux??

McAffee make an anti-virus product for Linux, however I can't
say if it's good or not.

Ever tried setting the runlevel to single-user and seeing if it
repeats on the Linux box? Or fresh install on LAN-only to ensure
there's no outside vector for infection?

It sounds like a virus, but at this point I'd start wondering
about hardware too. I'd make a copy of those maps onto a different
partition or different device, do the isolation thing, and then diff
them -- it could be something as simple as a flakey bit of RAM causing
the checksum generation to go wonky.

2006-02-18 Thread irv carlson

i will do that but we know the is it called the checksum or md5 hash is what
is changing just on the server and only the mapfiles but here is the kicker
we played last night and we have ventrillo 16 people were in the server
and the map changed half downloaded the map and the others had it let all
16 people in. then 5 min into the map . then two people tryed to join and
it told them the map differed then we checked the md5 code and it was
changed so we had to go to a differant map but i will have this done and
post it for you

My only guess after everything I have to believe ... Either you are getting
some type of security problem (and if you get infected before your AV gets
installed or the security exploit hits before you update. Or the other
option is that you have a very very strange bug.

My guess is you are getting a hacker or some other type of security problem.

RE: [hlds] The Famous Your Map de_dust differs from the server ERROR.

2006-02-18 Thread Dan Herrstrom
It seems a little strange that if it were either a virus or hacker that only
the map files for the CS server would be changed. I've never heard of a
virus that targeted Counter-Strike installs. Seems to me that it's probably
a hardware problem. What happens if you chkdsk /F the drive?

My only guess after everything I have to believe ... Either you are getting
some type of security problem (and if you get infected before your AV gets
installed or the security exploit hits before you update. Or the other
option is that you have a very very strange bug.

My guess is you are getting a hacker or some other type of security problem.

It seems a little strange that if it were either a virus or hacker that
only
the map files for the CS server would be changed. I've never heard of a
virus that targeted Counter-Strike installs. Seems to me that it's
probably
a hardware problem. What happens if you chkdsk /F the drive?

My only guess after everything I have to believe ... Either you are
getting
some type of security problem (and if you get infected before your AV gets
installed or the security exploit hits before you update. Or the other
option is that you have a very very strange bug.

My guess is you are getting a hacker or some other type of security
problem.

McAffee make an anti-virus product for Linux, however I can't

Ever tried setting the runlevel to single-user and seeing if
it repeats on the Linux box? Or fresh install on LAN-only to ensure
there's no outside vector for infection?

It sounds like a virus, but at this point I'd start wondering
about hardware too. I'd make a copy of those maps onto a different
partition or different device, do the isolation thing, and then diff
them -- it could be something as simple as a flakey bit of RAM causing
the checksum generation to go wonky.

did say EACH. I'm even more surprised that no-one else picked this up
as a potential problem, as it does have to be faulty memory or hdd. I
know this seems to have nothing to do with your problem but you may
find the lack of power is causing memory errors that you diag progs
aren't picking up. if it's not that then check for file corruption that
is the only other thing it could be

Did you say this was Windows 2000 Server? I hope you have it fully
patched before you bring it online. Quite a few of the Win2k
security
issues can
hit you in under 6min. I've actually tested a similar thing with
Win2k3 w/o
SP1 ... Some files got replace mysteriously in under about 10mins.

But honestly the issue sounds like it is either a bad router or some
type of hardware problem.

systems. and a 350W psu. ARE YOU MAD i'm surprised your system even
boot's as (without checking) each cpu draws about 80 - 100 watts, yes
i did say EACH. I'm even more surprised that no-one else picked this
up as a potential problem, as it does have to be faulty memory or hdd.
I know this seems to have nothing to do with your problem but you may
find the lack of power is causing memory errors that you diag progs
aren't picking up. if it's not that then check for file corruption
that is the only other thing it could be

Did you say this was Windows 2000 Server? I hope you have it fully
patched before you bring it online. Quite a few of the Win2k
security
issues can
hit you in under 6min. I've actually tested a similar thing with
Win2k3 w/o
SP1 ... Some files got replace mysteriously in under about 10mins.

But honestly the issue sounds like it is either a bad router or some
type of hardware problem.

Do you know how long it takes for a virus to infect a computer
 these days?
And you didn't say if you had a firewall. No need to know your IP

Irv,
The next time this starts to happen, run the updatetool with -verify_all
and save the log, then grep Downloading and post the list of downloaded
files here.

The question this will answer is are only the BSPs changing or is other
game content also changing

Scenario 1:
Various game content on disk is changing over time in spite of never being
written.
(implies that O/S and other on-disk content is also getting corrupted as
well)

Possible Causes:
1. disk problem
2. cable problem
3. power supply problem or intermittent power cables
4. bad cooling causing overheating
5. bad disk controller electronics
6. some other motherboard problem
7. malicious activity

Scenario 2:
only the map BSPs are changing on disk (including stock maps)

Possible Causes
1. malicious activity

Out of interest, next time you get a map file differ error, check the modify
date on it and see if its changed since your last clean update if that
makes sense. Just might give an idea if its something is changing it or
getting corrupt. It does sound like something on your machine as opposed to
a valve issue though if each time a verify_all detects your file has changed
in the meantime. Naturally check ftp logs, event log etc etc as well.

 Alfred please help

We are in need of help to solve a on going problem with server side
 map
 differs errors.
When clients connect to any of our 1U servers they will get Map differs
errors on the stock maps. This error happens on stock source css, 1.6,
 and
Source DOD maps. We have a OZ server running for the last week that has
 had
no issues as of this writing.

 Here are the server specs.
 Server 2
 dual amd 2400+ mps
 Tyan mb
 2 gig ecc pc 2100
 2 sata 1 rmp Raptors 36Gb raid 0
 win 2000

 Server 1
 dual amd 2400+ mps
 Tyan mb
 2 gig ecc pc 2100
 2 IDE 7200 rmp 40 gig
 Fedora core 4

At one time both servers were exactly the same,(same as Server 1 but
 with
 windows installed)

We thought it might be a hard drive issue so we upgraded Server 2 with
 new
Raptor 36 gig hard drives/raid 0 and installed Fedora on server 1 hoping
 to
elimante it from being a Windows OS problem. After the upgrade to this
 1U we
ran Memtest for 14 hours and a 2nd session of 6 hours with no errors, we
also ran Prime95 over night with no errors.
Within 5 hours of the fresh server 2000 install/hard drives on server 2
 the
 stock maps
started to differ, the other 1U(server 1) ran for almost 2 weeks on
 stock
 Source CSS
maps before having this problem and it gets worse every day.
Again this same problem happens on both 1U boxs to stock .bsp files and
 a
few .wav files on the Linux box, all verified by the hlds tool/verify
 all
 command
The Source CSS server`s map differs errors is 4 to 1 to the 1.6 server
 We
have also noticed that the .bsp that differ are haveing the md5
 hash/check
sum changed. However we can not find what is changing them. The only
 way
to fix them is to run the hldsupdatetool with -verify_all and have it
redownload the stock maps and then they work. We need to run the hlds
 tool
about every 4 hours or less.

This is my plea Help us
I will run any program you suggest or give you complete access to one or
both boxs if this problem interests you at all.
 Thanks

Then it is a hardware or routing issue. Since you have eliminated the

Just to clear something up for you :)

The server is free and people sell servers for their own profit,
 not Valves.
Why files on your server is getting currupted is not really something
Alfred should worry about unless it's the engine or updateservers who
 currupt them.

I presume you have a firewall and antivirus on your systems?

2006-02-15 Thread Stuart Stegall
Did you say this was Windows 2000 Server? I hope you have it fully patched
before you bring it online. Quite a few of the Win2k security issues can
hit you in under 6min. I've actually tested a similar thing with Win2k3 w/o
SP1 ... Some files got replace mysteriously in under about 10mins.

But honestly the issue sounds like it is either a bad router or some type of
hardware problem.

2006-02-15 Thread Munra -hlds

Why Does every one on this list an ass and yes it is a Problem with Valve.
When it only Chooses to do this With BSPs and it chosses only bsps.
I ran an Bf2 server Never had a problem (any other Games servers). Then if
it is a Server Issues it is not OS (happens on both linux and Windows) based
problem and if it is a hardware issuse that Steam doesnt Like don't you
think it would be worth valves time just to take some interst into it? I
mean Poeple how right Software usally care about that. And if you Search
the net we are not the only ones with is problem I Just find it odd after
running a program to monitor files changes it only happens to BSP files.
And it happens to stock files.

Please stop being an ass if you have nothing usefull to add to help the
problem your input it not needed

RE: [hlds] The Famous Your Map de_dust differs from the server ERROR.

2006-02-15 Thread Stuart Stegall
Install and update a new install of srcds.
Now write-protect all the .bsp files.
(maybe do this after the next patch ...)
Md5sum ALL the .bsp files.
Now that you have a baseline, run the server till someone get the error. (ok
IF someone gets the error)
If they never get the error, then you know it's some sort of software

If they do, then you have discovered a hardware problem.

I am sort of doubful of a problem with the hldsupdatetool, as I use it on
both platforms (actually I use it on FreeBSD as well) and I don't have this
problem except with bad hardware. (Just had this sort of problem with a bad

Then it is a hardware or routing issue. Since you have eliminated the
Windows install, and we all know a new source/hl1 install works just fine.

2006-02-15 Thread Munra -hlds

thanks for the input I have tired that alread.
write-proctecting stills Gives us map differs after a fresh install.
Md5sum is what is Changing on the bsp files. So you are saying this a
hardware issue? Is there software I can use to track down what piece of
hardware is cuasing this issue?

If Alferd is still reading This I am Correct and assuming that the server
checks the check sum of the clients maps and compars it to the servers Map
check sum to detemine if the map is the Same. Would this also apply to the
HLDSupdatetool???

Sorry For the ass comment been working on this problem a long time Pisses me

Install and update a new install of srcds.
Now write-protect all the .bsp files.
(maybe do this after the next patch ...)
Md5sum ALL the .bsp files.
Now that you have a baseline, run the server till someone get the error.
(ok
IF someone gets the error)
If they never get the error, then you know it's some sort of software

Perhaps I missed this, but are the files actually bad? Have you
compared de_quebec on the server with de_quebec from a client to see
whether it is Valve's test that is throwing a false error (for some
unknown reason - maybe hardware) or that the files have actually
become corrupted?

Did you say this was Windows 2000 Server? I hope you have it fully patched
before you bring it online. Quite a few of the Win2k security issues can
hit you in under 6min. I've actually tested a similar thing with Win2k3
w/o
SP1 ... Some files got replace mysteriously in under about 10mins.

But honestly the issue sounds like it is either a bad router or some type
of
hardware problem.

No the Files are not Bad. I can take a Changed File say de_dust (yes it
happens on stock maps) And make a listen server on my PC and play bots no
problem. What I am assuming is happen is the md5 hash(I hope I am calling
it the right thing or it is also know as the check sum) number is changing
(I know this ia happening) And I am assuming the the client checks the
servers map to see if the have the same md5 hash number and if the don't
then the files are differnet.

Aslo Yes I do run auto update on the linux box but I have both a linux and
windows box that are haveing these issues. When i do a man update
with -Verify_all then it does download new maps but they change with in
hours.

Can anyone tell me how the Server checks if the Files are the same??? They
just check the md5 hash?

Perhaps I missed this, but are the files actually bad? Have you
compared de_quebec on the server with de_quebec from a client to see
whether it is Valve's test that is throwing a false error (for some
unknown reason - maybe hardware) or that the files have actually
become corrupted?

Do the servers ever work? Or is this a progressive problem. And if you move
the files to your install and do listen server, they are using the same
file.

Valve does some kind of file checking, but I don't believe it's a hash, as
for CAL CS1.6 the servers use specially updated maps. They are server side
only though.

When I say MD5sum, I am saying go search on Google and download a tool
called md5sum.exe (your linux box will have the command already). Get the
md5sum of a .bsp like de_dust.bsp and then post it here

We'll compare it to see if the file is bad, if the file is bad then you
are likely either having a storage system problem, a memory problem, OR a
router is causing you to download the files corrupted.

The server is free and people sell servers for their own

Why files on your server is getting currupted is not really
  something

Alfred should worry about unless it's the engine or
  updateservers who

  currupt them.

You need to start isolating things to 1 or 2 known areas
and then expand, a process of integration rather than elimination.
Install source and then move the server to a private lan. Put a
game box on that lan. Play in LAN mode a while, see if you get the
error. If so, it's hardware or a rogue program. If not, let's go
internet. Same thing but now we're hitting Valve content servers.
I'd use a cheap NAT router for this, and still play in LAN mode.

Eventually you're going to find where it breaks. At that
point you've eliminated everything but the last change you made.

Good luck. It's a long process, but it works.

The Famous Your Map de_dust differs from the server ERROR.
It happens with all stock or at one time or another any custom map we run
in
no recognizable pattern.

We have had this annoying problem for a long long time on 2 1U boxs we use
to run CSS, DOD and CS servers on. I do not know if its a Steam issue or a
OS issue of some sort. This has nothing to do with the client side files,
FTP programs or the Bz2 files hosted for downloading on a separate website
so please do not even bring it up.
We have a fresh install of Server 2000 as a set of new HD`s were just
added.
All the server files were downloaded directly from Steam with the
hldsupdatetool and a NEW STOCK Source server was setup and running. There
was no FTP program installed or used for these files.
We decide to test the server with the stock install as we hoped we had
corrected the issue on this box, but it was not running more than 5 hours
when we started getting Your Map any_stockmap differs from the server Out
of the 17 Stock maps 8 of them were then updated by hldsupdatetool with
update -game Counter-Strike Source -dir D:\CSS\AnB -verify_all -retry
command to fix the problem as we have done this so many times before.
On Custom Map differs we delete and upload to the server again. This can
happen on a daily basis to any maps or just the same one for a while and
some times can go a week or so with out happening.
At about 6:30 pm this evening on the last differ of de_dust we deleted a
members client gfc contenet and then updated, connected to the server and
still had a differ problem.
I do not know if it`s an issue with our 1U`s as they were identical up to
the fresh OS install and adding new HD`s to 1 of them.
Both have Dual 2400`s Tyan Mobos, 2 GB ECC ram and run Server 2000
1 has Dual 7200RPM IDE
1 has Dual 1RPM SATA

I am hoping someone you has had this same problem will be able to provide a
definitive answer for this so I am offering a finders fee of $50.00 dollars
sent via PayPal or Western Union to the first person who supplys me with a
solution on how to fix this very annoying problem. I will consider it
money well spent!

I have gone thru a good number of Search topics to know we are not the only
server with this problem and as I am not a subscriber to the Linux list I
do
not know if they also have map differs issue`s. If they do not suffer
from
these same problems a change of OS may have to be considered.
we know it is not client side it is the server changing the files every few
hours i have $6000 in these two boxes please help i thought i would ask the
brains of the operation like i said please help

Ok we thought it was a ram issue not the case we still have the problem
this
is the specs of the APPRO 1U Dual AMD Athlon MP IDE Server
Tyan S2469NG Thunder K7 IDE motherboard
350W PFC Power Supply
8MB Video and Dual NIC (1-10/100 1-Gigabit) onboard

Dual (2x) AMD Athlon 2400+ MP
2GB (4x512MB) PC2100 Registered ECC DDR RAM
2x Internal Seagate EIDE, 40GB, 7200RPM
Running Server 2000 all updates are up to date
this has been an ongoing problem from day one the stock maps for
DoD,source,CStrike 1.6 the only server that the maps don’t differ is OZ our
last resort is to change the mother board and cpu's that is all that is
left
to change
five of us are trying to fix this problem and we have been at all of the
links you sent me and tryed everything they said and same result

Re: [hlds] The Famous Your Map de_dust differs from the server ERROR.

2006-02-14 Thread Munra -hlds

I am helping irv with this problem. I have to say He left out alot of
information.
I have to Say this problem really Pisses me off. We can sell server and we
can't even run clan servers will not help from valve at all.
I sent Alferd an e-mail he told me to run memtest and the mailing list said
to run prime95. Which we have with no errors.

Here is a copy of an e-mail I sent to Alferd with More info. On a side not
Alferd has not replyed for some reason.

Alfred please help

We are in need of help to solve a on going problem with server side map
differs errors.
When clients connect to any of our 1U servers they will get Map differs
errors on the stock maps. This error happens on stock source css, 1.6, and
Source DOD maps. We have a OZ server running for the last week that has had
no issues as of this writing.

Here are the server specs.
Server 2
dual amd 2400+ mps
Tyan mb
2 gig ecc pc 2100
2 sata 1 rmp Raptors 36Gb raid 0
win 2000

Server 1
dual amd 2400+ mps
Tyan mb
2 gig ecc pc 2100
2 IDE 7200 rmp 40 gig
Fedora core 4

At one time both servers were exactly the same,(same as Server 1 but with
windows installed)

We thought it might be a hard drive issue so we upgraded Server 2 with new
Raptor 36 gig hard drives/raid 0 and installed Fedora on server 1 hoping to
elimante it from being a Windows OS problem. After the upgrade to this 1U we
ran Memtest for 14 hours and a 2nd session of 6 hours with no errors, we
also ran Prime95 over night with no errors.
Within 5 hours of the fresh server 2000 install/hard drives on server 2 the
stock maps
started to differ, the other 1U(server 1) ran for almost 2 weeks on stock
Source CSS
maps before having this problem and it gets worse every day.
Again this same problem happens on both 1U boxs to stock .bsp files and a
few .wav files on the Linux box, all verified by the hlds tool/verify all
command
The Source CSS server`s map differs errors is 4 to 1 to the 1.6 server We
have also noticed that the .bsp that differ are haveing the md5 hash/check
sum changed. However we can not find what is changing them. The only way
to fix them is to run the hldsupdatetool with -verify_all and have it
redownload the stock maps and then they work. We need to run the hlds tool
about every 4 hours or less.

This is my plea Help us
I will run any program you suggest or give you complete access to one or
both boxs if this problem interests you at all.
Thanks

2006-02-14 Thread Alexander Kobbevik
Just to clear something up for you :)

The server is free and people sell servers for their own profit, not
Valves.
Why files on your server is getting currupted is not really something
Alfred should worry about unless it's the engine or updateservers who
currupt them.

I presume you have a firewall and antivirus on your systems?
