Sorry to jump into this one so late, but I was wandering through the iPhone

Many products do, including a popular product produced by my employer.

John McKown remarks:

Well, yes. But chances are excellent the debate about end user interface on
the smartphone has been settled already, and (except perhaps for system
programmers and operators) a traditional 3270-style user interface
depending on a special installable smartphone client isn't going to fly.
It's not a very good match for most (or all) smartphones anyway.
Mobile-tailored Web user interfaces are a much better (and more useful) fit
for the vast majority of users, never mind the networking issues.

In terms of CPU burden, sure, there's CPU burden incurred *somewhere*, and
CPU burden is never free anywhere. My employer -- the one that I do not
speak for -- has neatly solved that financial problem at least in this
particular mainframe use case and within its sphere.

x3270 should be able to be comipled on any processor with a C compiler.
Hercules should be able to be compiled on any processor with a C compiler.
Hercules has run on a Compaq handheld with VM/370 5pack. Might no be

Access z/OS 3270 TSO from smartphone?

2010-07-29 Thread McKown, John
OK, it's probably a stupid thought. But we are losing our laptop with the air
card. So we won't have a way to access our z system when not at home or where
there is wifi (assuming I take my own laptop around with me). So, with all
these new smartphones such as the Droid, I was wondering if that device could
be used to VPN into our LAN and then do 3270 emulation? I know absolutely
nothing about these devices. Can they telnet into UNIX systems?

Re: Access z/OS 3270 TSO from smartphone?

2010-07-29 Thread Rich Smrcina
Assuming you have no firewall issues...

Finding a 3270 emulator for Android will be the biggest problem. I've been
looking for one since I got an Android based phone without luck. The form
factor will be the next hurdle to get past. Granted, you won't be doing
heads down data entry, but it is certainly not something you want to be
doing long term work with either.

There is a OpenVPN client for Android, but sadly it requires rooting the
device. An implementation of VNC is also available. An SSH client is
available which I've used, it is quite nice.

Re: Access z/OS 3270 TSO from smartphone?

2010-07-29 Thread Natarajan Mohan

John,

There are VPN client software for windows mobile based phones. There are
TN3270 and telnet clients for most phones windows mobile, blackberry,
iphone, android etc. There are also VNC/RDP clients for most of these
phones.
Though all these exist, its very hard to use from handheld devices.
Drawbacks are small screen, keyboard, navigation etc. I have found it
easier to tether via phone to a laptop and use full fledged laptop.

You would need additional software like Rove, Alarmpoint etc to make
your handheld really useful for remote administration. If your
organization allows access to the network via personal computers, that
is the way to go.

HTH,
Natarajan

Re: Access z/OS 3270 TSO from smartphone?

2010-07-29 Thread Kirk Wolf
John,

Android apps like the free EasyTether Lite can be used to tether
your laptop to the cell data network on most Android phones.
The app is basically a NAT router written in Java, and doesn't require
you to root the phone. The free version of the app blocks https:
after a while, but other ports like ftp(21), ssh (22), telnet (23) and
tn3270 (623,1023, etc) seem to work fine.If you know someone with
an Android phone, give it a try since YMMV. This may be
insufficient, however, if your company has some kind of VPN that
requires a VPN client on your computer that is not compatible with the
NAT router, but that might work also depending on the VPN protocol.
Finally, using this kind of app could be considered as a violation of
your cell carrier's terms of service, since they would prefer to sell
you a tethering feature for your phone for an extra $30-50 / month.
