Re: SSL/TLS MSU usage

2018-08-13 Thread Brian Westerman
The z13 (and I think b|ec12s) have CPACF built into each physical CPU, the
older machines had CPACF but it was shared between multiple processors.

There is some extra CPU involved when you don't have a cryptoexpress (CEX), but
you have to remember that not everything is or can be offloaded to the CEX
either. I think the cryptoexpress has 8 processors, but depending on what you
are doing SSL-wise you may not see any real measurable improvement over CPACF.

If you are going to use CPACF with System SSL or MQ, you have to turn on a
feature code, (feature #3863).

In reality, some part of the key negotiation will be performed on the General
Processor (and CPACF) regardless of CEX availability. Also certain SSLCIPH
specs are not supported by the CEX cards (as per
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/blogs/c4142f9d-6cf1-44ef-a44a-b09428ad96d1/entry/is_my_ssl_channel_using_hardware_assist?lang=en
 ).

SSL/TLS MSU usage

2018-08-13 Thread Munif Sadek
Hello All

We have zBC12 and z13s but no crypto cards. As we are moving all our IP
communications to SSL/TLS, Is there a way to estimate additional MSU used in
this encryption/decryption and key negotiations. IP traffic is CICS socket,
HTTPS , FTPS, TN3270S, DB2 DDF , SSH etc..Its all over the place.

Is there a way we can simulate our MSU savings by having additional crypto
Hardware.

regards
Munif

Re: Using the Binder API and MetalC

2018-08-13 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
No feature tests in the header file. As long as the header hasn't already been
used it unconditionally defines the data areas and the function prototypes.

I'd accept feature test macro(s) as a reasonable alternative as long as MetalC
programs can use just the data area definitions and not the function prototypes.

Using the Binder API and MetalC

2018-08-13 Thread Farley, Peter x23353
I have been experimenting with MetalC code to invoke the Binder API macros
(IEWBIND) and access the returned data using the C language definitions in
/usr/include/__iew_api.h.

The issue is that /usr/include/__iew_api.h also contains all of the actual
Binder API function prototypes and these cannot (easily) be used from MetalC
because they reside in a DLL, plus it appears to me that they are only useable
in an LE enclave, also not easily done from MetalC.

OTOH, the C language buffer and data area definitions are perfectly usable in
MetalC as they are.

I was thus forced to make a copy of the /usr/include/__iew_api.h structure and
data area definitions without the function prototypes. This works well for my
immediate need, but for future maintainability it sure would be nice if IBM
split the /usr/include/__iew_api.h into two parts - Data definitions and
function prototypes.

Or create two new header files for each and make /usr/include/__iew_api.h just
#include the two new headers to preserve the current functionality.

Would some kind soul volunteer to set up an RFE for that? I would do so myself
but for various reasons I cannot do it at this time.

Peter

IBM Basic Counter Unit

2018-08-13 Thread Mike Kerford-Byrnes
In an idle moment a few months ago, I remembered using the above on a 360/50.
It looked like an 029 in intensive care, with a lot of cables emanating from
the box, all connected to various points in the processor.

I doodled on Google and found a reference which included a picture (sorry -
image!) and a reference to the IBM model number (which I thought was 29??).

I now have a desire to revisit that picture/reference as part of a history
project on which I am working. But I cannot for the life of me find any
reference to it . I spent a large part of Friday with Google and Bing, trying
every combination of IBM, Basic, Counter, and unit, as well as the 29nn values.
 But --- nothing.

I suspect I have missed the 'magic' Google phrase which would reveal all -
several hours of frustrating Googling can induce typing "inconsistencies", so I
am appealing to this forum for anything that can help me to track it down.

Hopefully thanking in advance.

Re: IBF missing in new z hardware

2018-08-13 Thread Parwez Hamid
Jake,
If you don't have access to IBM TechDocs, I can send the PDF version to you
direct. There are some important considerations if you are using the z14 ZR1 as
a coupling facility. This is covered in detail in the Tech Doc.

Short answer. customer supplied UPS.

Here is some text I have cut from the TechDoc I referenced:

The Internal Battery Feature (IBF) is an optional feature on many of the IBM Z
family processors. The IBF provides a local uninterrupted power source
and further enhances the robustness of the power design present in the
mainframe and increases a mainframe’s immunity to power line disturbance
. It provides battery backup power to preserve processor data during a loss of
power on all power feeds from the computer room. The IBF can hold
power briefly during a brownout, or for orderly shutdown if there is a longer
outage. IBM announced the IBM z14 ZR1 in April 2018. The announcement included
information about the single 19” frame that houses the ZR1hardware components
as well as a new Feature Code (FC), FC 0617 – 16U Reserved, which allows
customers to install components other than ZR1 hardware inside of the 19” rack
given that it meets a set of criteria for the space.
The ZR1 will not be available with an IBF; clients requiring a battery backup
solution must consider an alternative battery backup solution when planning for
the ZR1
.
Although the IBF is offered on the dual frame z14, it will not be offered as a
feature option for the IBM z14 Model ZR1 processor. Clients with sensitive data
on a ZR1 will need to explore an external industry - standard solution such as
an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) to address concerns regarding back -
up generator lag - time.

IBM ZR1 Considerations. There is no IBF feature for any z14 Model ZR1 . Battery
backup, such as an external UPS solution or floor wide UPS solution, can be
used to provide power resiliency to the ZR1. A UPS installed into the 16U
Reserved Area will only be able to provide battery backup to other
hardware installed in this area; ZR1 hardware, outside of the 16U Reserved
area, cannot be powered from a UPS installed in the 19” rack.

Battery backup power from an external UPS solution or floor wide UPS solution
can provide the ZR1 power in case of a brownout, or in the case of a longer
power outage, it will provide time to properly bring down components running in
the ZR1. This can become particularly important when Coupling Facilities (CF)
are housed inside of the CPC.

Re: Vulnerability mitigation with OSPROTECT

2018-08-13 Thread Timothy Sipples
There's a great deal of information published here:

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/zoslib/pdf/OA54807.pdf

As that document indicates, please refer to the official publication
updates themselves for the latest authoritative information.

I see that CA has published lots of (non) impact statements within the past
couple weeks, with no problems reported or expected in ACF2, MIMS, CA1,
MICS, and Datacom, as examples.

As a reminder, please subscribe to the IBM Z Security Portal if you need
to. Details here:

Models ZR1 or LR1? If this is the case then, it isn't!

Re: SAN switch for TAPE drive

2018-08-13 Thread Timothy Sipples
Very rarely a storage vendor might require attachment of their storage
device via a particular vendor-supported SAN switch in order to end up with
a vendor-supported configuration. Even in those rare, exceptional cases
it's not because the technology prohibits direct attachment. Sometimes a
tape controller is required, with or without a SAN switch in the picture.

Surely the tape drive vendor would know how their tape drive can be
attached, right?

IBF missing in new z hardware

2018-08-13 Thread Jake Anderson
Hi

IBF(Integrated battery feature) doesn't seem to be available from z13.

Any idea how the newer hardware are going to manage without IBF ?
