As a co-worker and friend of Bob's I reiterate every word, when he left
Boeing he left a hole there in more ways than one, I had no idea talking
to him that he was sick, struggling in any way, he never let it on. his
friendship and contribution will surly be missed.

thanks Jim for filling in the holes for us.

was well qualified. He and Rebecca were in Atlanta where Bob was working for
Suntrust Bank. He was let go and immediately I asked if he would be interested
to come to this area and work for my Systems Services contractor. He said yes
and he was hired, onsite and got to work in no time. This was in the late
2000s.

He worked with the team maintaining our z9BC Parallel Sysplex providing a 24/7
system for the US Federal Retirement & Healthcare Systems and also then OPM did
95% of all the Federal Background Investigations. It was an operation covering the
entire world. Bob and the team made my Disaster Recovery Plan come true when they
would fully recover our Sysplex at IBM Sterling Forest NY, in 24 hours with only up
to 5 seconds of Data loss and be able to run a 72 hour test of our worldwide
operation without impacting the 24/7 production systems in DC.

Bob did z/OS and really made me look good when the Data Center achieved 5 years
of Continuous Operations, including all the Database systems with only
unavailability of our system including all applications for 4 hours per week.
In 5 years we only had 28 hours of systems unavailability of which 18 hours was
due to UPS batteries which were 13 years old; non-IT management would not
spring for the money for new batteries until

I retired in 2013 and tried to get Bob to apply his 8 years of Air Force
service into a Federal Job but he enjoyed what he did and if hired he'd fill my
old job which was strictly hands-off despite being an ACE Systems Programmer.
Bob knew the end was coming but worked up until a week before it was time.

My heart goes out to Rebecca and know she will miss Bob terribly. He was one
class act, a knowledgeable professional and fun to be around. He and the team
sure did make me look good in the eyes of the CIO, non-IT Management and our
retirees of which approximately 500K Federal Retirees are located overseas.
Thanks Bob and to Rebecca for supporting him on all those Sunday Mornings from
0500-0900 to do upgrades and changes getting all system up by 0900; speak about

NO resources on any servers anywhere will be committed to the preservation

Usability of the exported data is not managements concern. User requests are

I can't remember, when I worked for the State and they were moving some
DB2 data to a SQL server somewhere, I worked with the DBA's and setup a
Unix process (on Z) and a migration directory for them to unload the

first extract, assuming you have a lot of data to process. If you're not a
REXXer but do know VBA or VBS, you can convert to CSV after you download the
flat files, though that may be a little harder.

(So it can't possibly be a dumb answer, Lionel, if both you and I like it.)

CSV...that might be a lot of data. Is Access an option, instead? More trouble
to access (no pun intended) but it does a better job when the bytes are many.

that's correct, I schedule weekly a job that receives hold data directly
to my test LPAR, (z/OS global zone), you need to download a cert from
shopz first, IIRC there's doc on the site on how to add the cert to your
security system and some sample JCL.

I have a sample if needed

Re: I want to cry

Absolutely!
I fall into the last category now :( - went to tech school for data processing,
RPG and RPG II some COBOL in the 70's
went for my fist job with Chilton Research for a programmers position, I ended
up being one of those folks you don't want to get a call from.
I left there and was able to get a job with Sears hoping to be a programmer
only to get a job as an operator, but I was provided the opportunity to learn
application level assembler programing, everyone, even my managers and supers
were assembler programmers, it was then I was taught how to shoot a dump, but
my ability was limited in assembler, moving on from Sears to other gigs I had
the opportunity to learn exit routines and update some JES2 MOD's (when IBM
provided source) but most of my job(s), especially working with IBM was as you
said, install, adim and debug system and product issues.
Over time I learned how to design and build sysplex systems along with all the
other all all the other cool stuff that goes with administering a z/OS SYSPLEX.
most managers now only want us to document (desktop) procedures thinking it's
so easy just for us to document what we do so the next kid can take over, yeah,
I'd like to see that.
sorry for the expanded version of my response.

Very few would like pure capitalism. No social security, medicare, military,

straight forward. See the USS Planning guide.
Your service mountpoints would then be hung off of a directory in the OMVS
sysplex root (as opposed to the system root).

I assume you're not zfs file sharing? I usually don't mount etc or dev unless
I'm doing an upgrade, but if you're not sharing the /SERVICE/ filesystems then
yes you need to create the mount points first - then remount them on the
moved-to LPAR

starting with z/OS 2.2 IIRC the all the data files for z/OSMF were moved

when upgrading, performing maint, the root filesystem needs to be

I found this out 2 times so far and I don't think that's documented but
the address space needs to write to that filesystem at first

looks like z/OS 2.1 filesystem configuration, so first what release are

looks like the address space is wanting to write to /var/zosmf/configuration

Finally got it resolved. It turns out that once the HMC MFA requirement is
assigned to a userid, the HMC asks for a OTC for every userid, regardless of
whether it requires the OTC or not. If not, don't enter anything in the field,
and select logon/login. Once I removed the requirement for MFA on my test id,
it stopped asking.

I like the self hosted nature.

But what happens when you need to get into the HMC when the LDAP

Is there a local fall back account that is used?

"listserv.ua.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A1=ind2301=IBM-MAIN&", I see my post as
well  as responses from rpinion865 and Matt Hogstrom.

But I am receiving neither their posts nor the echo of mine via
email. I think something is broken at UA.edu.

I'm not sure if a CVOL is the same as a non-indexed VTOC (I didn't think so)
but to remove the IXVTOC, use ICKDSF BUILDIX OSVTOC PURGE which will unindex

As we all know, PDS compression has nothing to do with data

Historically, we have called that "compression", but in this day and
age continuing to call it that no longer is an option.

Has anyone come up with a better term that I missed while not looking?

A gsktrace is pretty easy to get and format. If it's an LE application, then

Otherwise I assume just setting those environment variables should work.

Then after you run the thing (and it fails) you'll see a file in that
location. Issue:
gsktrace /u/fred/myssltrace.file > /some/location/ssltrace.txt

And you should wind up with a nice, moderately readable trace file. I've
been learning a lot about various TLS errors from tracing our stuff, would
be interested in seeing yours since I might learn something.

Beyond the obvious cons below, what else am I missing? Will a cold start

CONS:
1. No longer monitor production jobs from DEV 2. User's will need to

I think maybe all of us have seen something like this over the years, we
control this via OPS (automation) two fold

1) pause - quiesce the workload and notify operations / systems when the
threshold reaches 80%

2) (we don't have a need) but just in case, automation will add a spool
volume we have spared on the fly.

if you can provide these processes will get better results you will save

I don't recall the specifics but in Z/os you can define the OSA's and
ports, and depending on the OSA-Express card you have, some have 4 ports
per card, some have only 2, and if IIRC, on a z15 one for one, but you
can share across LPARS defined in your IOGEN, and use  a device /

Re: Limiting quantity of tape drives used by user

2022-11-07 Thread Carmen Vitullo
there's the easy way to control resource usage, IIRC this can still be
done with WLM and workload resource definitions, been some time since I
worked in a shop that had defined all the mainframe resources and used
scheduled environments and BMC's CONTROL products to manage workloads
based on what resource was available and what LPAR these resources are
defined

Thru-put manager is a great product and the JAL language of how to setup
rules was pretty easy

very hard, an outsourcing shop I worked at where a combination of  JES2
exits, CONTROL-M and querying the EDT, then pass the eligible devices to
CONTROL-M  to manage ALL workloads, tons of places for errors, worked
great when it worked, most scheduling systems have a way to define the
resources for the LPARS and managing what runs were, and when is not so
hard

Love the stories, I graduated from Vo-tech as an RPG / COBOL programmer
thinking I'd get a job easy as a programmer, not so, but a good learning
experience as an operator they to production control, to now a sysprog.

I started in 1977 working for a large retailer, no IMS but CICS , SII
(Senden) or as I think it morphed into, connect direct and D3 (DataLink)
to poll the stores for cash register data and send markdown and
inventory data to the stores after that data was processed.

loved 3rd shift at the time.

As an operator if Senden came down we had a blue light that would come
on in the computer room, blue light special, Monday early AM before the
stores opened was the time to re calibrate the automated voice response
system (Wavetech) system for the stores.

so many stories good and bad.

Okay, more issues. As I stated, we use a permanent maintenance
volume/system. With ServerPac, we could define an SSA and have the
SYSRES datasets cataloged in our maintenance systems master cat then
ServerPac would allocate the dataset using an SSA. later it would
generate jobs to remove the SSA.

Unless I’m missing something, this doesn’t seem possible with z/OSMF
because the Modify Catalog section doesn’t let us change the master cat
(even though it says it will). The only way I see around that is to
rename the SYSRES dataset with the SSA. Of course we would then need to
create our own rename job to remove the SSA. Jeez, COME ON PEOPLE!

First of all, I am a manufacturer of a Virtual Tape Appliance that emulates
3480, 3490 and 3590 tapes, z/Appliance. We, like most VTAs that are not IBM's,
operate as a MTL ( manual tape library ), and we support auto mounting via the
LDD CCW ( Load Display ). For z/OS, that is the message like MABC001S that real
devices displayed. The M for mount, the S for SL label and then ABC001 for the
volume serial number. PRIVAT or SCRTCH for the vol ser indicate that the
appliance should pull from the scratch list it is maintaining.

Second, as part of the communication process, the LPAR number is sent. This
information along with the various CCWs that affect ASSIGNMENT, is how we
manage and communicate with the LPAR OS as to the availability of a DRIVE.

We support up to 254 LPARs, although that is beyond what IBM presently supports.

Now, you can VARY the device to be AUTOSWITCHed. That and configuring via the
IO/GEN multiple LPARs availability enables the use of a drive for several LPARs.

V 580,AS,ON

This is fine when you are operating a SYSPLEX, because a SYSPLEX typically
shares the tape pool/vault.

If that is not the case, then configure the VTA with multiple control units or
devices and limit the scope of the control unit or device to specific LPARs.

For example, with our z/Appliance you can configure a single control unit with
16 devices and each could be assigned a unique LPAR number and tape pool. Or
configure 16 Controllers with 4 devices each with each controller assigned to a
unique LPAR and yet they could all share the same pool if you wanted to do that.

The AUTOSWITCH configuration makes sense with expensive real devices. However,
with Virtual Tapes, we license by the number of active tape mounts, not the
number of devices defined. This avoids all the hand shaking that has to be done
by the OS to locate a free tape device. A process that adds latency to tape
drives in use.

If you have 4 LPARs and the maximum number of drives you would ever use is 8,
then define 4 control units with eight devices each and purchase a license for
8 devices. So even though you have 32 devices defined in the IOGEN, the license
would defer mounts greater than 8 in this case.

For additional information, please visit our website at
https://www.atsmigrations.com . Leave a contact and i would be happy to discuss
the process with you.

if I recall correctly you need to define the devices as shared and
define a CF structure to use AUTOSWAP , or a product like MIM to manage
the devices across multiple systems.

at my site using a virtual tape system we have defined 256 devices and
just manage the number of devices we need across 3 LPARS, all others

How are most shops handling USS management and migration?

For many years, there has been a strong sentiment in my shop against
utilizing USS (security and scalability were always cited as the primary
reasons) and we were only allowed to utilize USS with IBM and ISV software
installs. Things are changing and now there is a strong push to change our
culture around USS. However, we are greatly behind with the times and
inexperienced with best management practices regarding USS migrations.

I'm sure our shop isn't the only site with a similar configuration, but we
have multiple systems for development lifecycles (alpha testing on SYSA and
SYSB, beta testing on SYSC and SYSD, etc). Since USS requires separate
dataset mounts for each system, this makes sharing common resources across
the same lifecycle environment impossible; unless it is read-only (but how
do you update the file system without an outage?). Is there some sort of
management practice that we're missing to achieve the ability to leverage
common resources in USS?

Also, how do you handle migration? Our shop uses CA Endevor. Do you employ
your change management software with USS migrations? If so, how do you copy
directories/folders without outages? For directories/files that can easily
be built with jobs, do you re-run these jobs on each system, or copy these
elements?

Re: Unix System Services migration

2022-09-29 Thread Carmen Vitullo
For my site, I eventually setup a shared Unix filesystem, we wanted the
ability to move workloads from system to system, or allow access to
shared fileystems from any task, batch or ftp process.

my Serverpac filesystems that came with my order are copied to a shared
sysplex filesystem. it took me some time to get this setup and managed
the way we needed but it works well.

the IBM doc

Unix system services planning is where I found all the sample processes
I needed to setup the shared filesystem and the best practice for
parmlib and system setup

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/2.1.0?topic=sysplex-establishing-shared-file-system-in

the process will setup a sysplex root, $version root and a $system root,
fileystems that are specific to each system are mounted at

/SYSA/local/

all version or ZOS filesystems are mounted off the sysplex root, and for
us, filesystems that are not part of the OS $VERSION are mounted at

/PLEX1/usr/local/

I'm sure others have some great options that work for them this
enviorment works great for me

yes I read it, and that would be great if every single client, every
single site had the same wisdom as you, I've worked at sites where I was
not the lead z/os or mvs guy, I had no control over what anyone else
did, and we all paid the consequences updating a live system, acceptable
or not, I change the allocation to not allocate secondary space period.

my main issue was how the space was defined initially using the
serverpac dialog, been burnt a couple times during the SP install, so I
update the space requirements then.

that is for MY site, and my MY way of installing  and maintaining a

Did you read the explanation (see below)? It is a suggestion. Health
Checker has a very large number of checks and suggestions. Not every
one applies to every shop or every LPAR. Neither of the 2 reasons apply to
the systems I maintain and I disable that check except in my sandbox LPARs
because of the reasons I already stated.

Secondary or no secondary no one better be updating a live LNKLST data
set without a very good reason and thinking about the possible consequences.
All changes to the sysres set go in with rolling IPLs and change control.
Our ISV runtime libs are all on a secondary / tertiary sysres volumes and
are indirectly catalogued just like the IBM OS libraries.

=
Explanation: CSVH0979I has been placed in the message buffer for each
LNKLST LNKLST set. It lists all data sets with secondary space
   defined.

IBM suggests that partitioned data sets (PDS's) in the LNKLST be

allocated with only primary extents, for two reasons. First, a PDS
allocated with only primary space defined has only one extent. This
makes it easier to stay within the 255-extent limit for an active
LNKLST concatenation without having to reallocate data sets with
fewer initial extents. Second, if a PDS will be updated while in
the LNKLST set, it can be extended if it has been allocated using
secondary space. This can cause members to be placed in extents that
did not exist when the LNKLST concatenation was activated. An
attempt to access a member in a new extent causes the requesting
   program to abend.

This suggestion does not apply to partitioned data set extended

(PDSE) program libraries. A PDSE program library counts as only one
   extent.

Secondary extents are certainly supported in the LNKLST. What you can't
do is
take a secondary to the "live" LNKLST for a PDS, but you can for PDSE and
pick up the change with an LLA REFRESH or UPDATE. For LPA libs it doesn't
matter ever since that is only read in at IPL time.

The number of extents in the LNKLST used to be a problem for some systems,
but when
the rules changed in DFSMS/MVS 1.3 to be "255 total extents or less" with
PDSE always
counting as 1 extent, that helped a lot. I personally want secondary
extents, at
least for some data sets to support applying maintenance. I always run
SMP/E apply
with COMPRESS(ALL) anyway so it's not going to continually increase and
I'd rather
get a secondary on a few libraries than have the apply blow up, have
allocate a new
larger DSN, copy old to new, rename and restart my apply. I'm pretty sure
this is
why ServerPac allocations came with secondary extents going back in
history.

Due to 3390-9s geometry being my main sysres volume still, over allocation
from ServerPac (or now z/OSMF) has been more of a problem for me than
under allocation, so when building my local maintenance sysres after
install I have
had to free space on some larger PDS or PDSE files to get everything to
fit and
have spare space on the sysres for maintenance. Then if something takes a
secondary during apply, I don't care. The prod LNKLSTs have secondaries on
some data sets on the sysres, but again I don't care. No one better be
updating
the live sysres anyway except under extreme circumstances.

As usual YMMV and if you are in a shop with 220 LNKLST data sets you
probably
have a very good reason for never wanting any secondary extents even in
your
maintenance environment.

Re: SMF type 76 records - RMF trace activity

2022-09-08 Thread Carmen Vitullo

looks like TRACE need to be before VSTOR(S) ?

TRACE being a major parm, with VSTOR(S) and other options being minor
parms under TRACE?

I'm a CMF shop so I cannot test, but looking at my old RMF parms

NOTRACE

    VSTOR(S)

    WKLS

So I need to IPL to get rid of RMF.

Thanks in advance, Pierre.

Phil,

Yes, it's TLSv1.3:

sorry I missed this.

You mean the label in the gskkyman entry?

I was thinking the entry, Cert that was added to RACF, that's where I had
similar issues.
sorry I could not be more help

Re: Certificate problem

2022-09-08 Thread Carmen Vitullo

Phil, was this output from an SSL trace?

IIRC there's usually more data related to a cert error,  it's been 7, or
8 years since I ran the trace but usually the trace data

shows the TLS version also, it's a stretch but are you running TSL 1.1
or higher?

I'd agree with Attila also, I've had my security team load a cert for me
that required mixed case, and they defined the LABEL with all caps

I find nothing for that error in the doc (either the text or the error
number). https://colinpaice.blog/2021/11/03/using-z-os-ldap-with-tls-1-3/
discusses the error, but I don't know how to check it! Other clients work
but that doesn't prove much-we know z/OS is more stringent about following
the rules than many.

Ideas?

doing wrong, maybe my browser, but I select my subscription and select
get emails and I get nothing, luckily I still get emails to my work
