Re: StandAlone ICKDSF
You can use the OS Messages. SHARE requirement SSMVSE11007 is to Allow z/OS to use HMC integrated 3270 Console for NIP and MCS is status recognized. From the ICKDSF Users Guide and Reference: Prior to IPLing, specify the load parm to indicate the console you want ICKDSF to use. The required format for the load parm for Stand-Alone ICKDSF is 8 characters specified as: CNSL Where 'CNSL' is required as the first 4 characters to ensure residual data in the load parm field is not interpreted as the predefined console. '' indicates the console you want to use and must be either: 'SCLP' to indicate that you want to use an SCLP (or HMC) console. For example, the load parm would be specified as CNSLSCLP to indicate that ICKDSF Stand-Alone should attempt to use the HMC console. Or 'ccuu', where ccuu is the device address of a channel attached console. For example, the load parm would be specified as CNSL0521 to indicate that ICKDSF Stand-Alone should attempt to use the console at address 521. The following rules apply for specifying a 'ccuu': 'ccuu' must be specified as 4 digits (a leading zero is required for a 3 digit device address). The digits must be valid hex digits (0-9, A-F). The device must be a valid supported console in the configuration and must be operational. If the address consists of valid hex digits, ICKDSF will do the console I/O to the device and has no way to check if the device exists, or if it is working, or if in fact it is a console without doing I/O to it. The console must be a 3270 type console (not a printer/keyboard type such as 3215, etc.). When a load parm is specified to indicate a console to be used, and an error occurs attempting initial communication with that device, a disabled wait is loaded to identify the type of problem. The user must correct the problem and re-IPL the Stand-Alone to identify the console to be used. On Mon, 28 Jan 2013 17:38:16 -0600, Billy R. Re: Peculiar behavior of D PROG,LNKLST....
Bruce, interesting. I see the same on my 1.13 system. The doc is a little unclear, but it looks like for what you want to do, you'd issue D PROG,LNKLST,USERS,CURRENT. Which is basically your first command. Your second command is essentially the first option in the definition in system commands: D PROG,LNKLST[,NAME=[lnklstname|CURRENT] ] [,NAMES ] [,USERS,[CURRENT|NOTCURRENT|NAME=lnklstname]] [,ASID=asid ] [,JOBNAME=jobname ] [,L={a|name|name-a} ] And on the first option, users isn't valid. On this item from system commands, there really should be 'or' bars before NAMES,USERS,ASID,and JOBNAME. Though you're right, it should give you an error, as this does not: /d prog, lnklst, name=current, bob=dumb Then again, it's actually kind of nice that it doesn't give you an error. Re: The Transaction state (was Model 2827 New Instructions)
Peter, did you mean to cross post this from the assembler list? For everyone else's reference, here's part of the thread cross posted from assembler-l...@listserv.uga.edu, because it's a pretty good thread: I have reviewed the Transactional Execution section of the new zProOps and I see that I need to make a correction of my earlier description. Previously, I had believed that fetch accesses could not lead to collisions. That is incorrect. Fetches (both transactional and non-transactional) made against the same storage (cache lines actually) as transactional stores give rise to collisions that cause the (or a) storing transaction to abort. Consequently, the process doing the nontransactional fetch will see only pre-transaction values and will simply proceed as if nothing has happened. So my revised description follows: At 9/18/2012 02:46 PM, David Cole wrote [revised]: The transaction state is expected to replace many instances of acquiring either a latch or a lock. It's benefit arises because latches/locks do not distinguish between a shared need vs. an exclusive need, so all latches/locks are, effectively, exclusive. Consider a thousand processes needing to scan a queue and one process, every year or so, updating that queue. The scan processes do not need to defend against each other, only against the updater. So a vast majority of the time, scanners are unnecessarily delayed. Unnecessary in the sense that the updater just ain't there, only other scanners. With the transaction state, neither scanners nor updaters need to acquire any latch or lock. In fact, the scanners don't need to acquire anything at all. They can simply scan the queue and be assured (a) their scan will both complete and succeed, and (b) they will see all queue elements either prior to update, or after update, but never mid-update; i.e. they will always see a coherent queue. Only the updater needs to use the transaction state (TS). Other updaters and scanners (whether they're also in the transaction state or not!) may interfere. I.e. they may try to see or update the same fields at the same time. When two processes attempt to access the same storage at the same time, and one of those accesses is an update, this is called a collision... (I'll call the participants colliders.) - If both colliders are in the transaction state, then one will win (and will proceed undisturbed) and one will lose (will TABORT and will have to retry). - If one is in the TS state and one is not, then the one who is not will always win (and will see pre-update data), and the one who is will always have to retry. Scanners need not be in the TS state, but of course, every updater should be. This is because if two updaters collide when neither is in the TS state... well that is what you want to avoid. Roger, I definitely would not make a change like this by itself. And I probably wouldn't make it even if I were making another change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it would be why. I don't really check the policy either. I attend SHARE psx sessions, and if I see something I think we should be doing, I'll come home, investigate, and decide whether or not to implement it. The last two changes I recall were in 2009, msgbased and duplexing. If there were holddata, I would of course, implement that. Sizing for CF Structures is done on an ongoing basis.
