[Ilugc] GNU/Linux Workshop for Technical Staffs @ Sethu Institute of Technology
Dear all, On behalf of ILUGC, myself have conducted a two days GNU/Linux workshop @ Sethu Institute of Technology for Technical Staffs of all departments and also for Office staffs. The Sethu Institute of Technology, Near Kariapatti, Virudhunagar District wants most of its existing windows PCs to be converted to GNU/Linux, Open Source Softwares (including ECE, EEE, Mech. Departments). So, the training was planned for all sys. admins / lab technicians in the college. The training focussed on 1. Fedora-12 Linux Installation (Local / Remote using kickstart) 2. Local Repository Setup for Package management 3. Samba for File Sharing Services 4. NFS / DHCP Setup 5. LTSP (for setting up Terminal Services in existing Labs) 6. Introduction to several application development tools (codeblocks, netbeans, eclipse, openoffice, mysql, umbrello etc) I also had an interaction with all department staffs, regarding their doubts about the existing proprietary software and their equivalent applications in Linux / Open source software and how far other colleges have been using FOSS in other departments. They are planning to have a separate Linux lab for the first year students from the next academic year. They also have planned for a one week training program for Teaching staff's by first week of May (Interested persons, may contact me offlist). I would like to thank Dr. Senthil Kumar (Principal), Mrs. M. Sheerin Banu (Dean, Profesor & Head-CSE) and Mr. Nageswaran (System Admin) for the support. Regards S. If interested, we can provide the required hardware with complete resources setup for anyone who is willing to setup FOSS labs in your regions. You can install about 100 machines in just 3 hours, if the Desktop PC has atleast 1 GB of RAM and PXE booting support. [Ilugc] FOSS LAB Setup for Technical / Engineering Institutions in Tamilnadu
Dear All, In the recent times, we are getting more enquiries from technical institutions to implement open source lab and we also have setup many open source labs in these institutions across Tamilnadu (Now, Polytechnics were also showing more interest in having Open Source labs and we already have setup in 2 Polytechnics running successfully) Now, LinuXpert Systems has been taking initiative to setup open source labs in about 1500+ Technical Institutions (Polytechnics, Arts & Science Colleges, Engineering Colleges, Universities) across Tamilnadu (for the first time, the foss lab setup would be done at free of cost). The main objective behind this initiative is to successfully implement and support for FOSS enabled Technical / Engineering education in Tamilnadu - By 2012, all Technical / Engineering Institutions should feel comfortable using / training their students on Free / Open Source Softwares To provide complete alternative FOSS solution for every Proprietary Software used in education Encouraging students/staffs members to get participated in FOSS development Interacting with College/Institution Management for successful implementation of FOSS throughout the institution (not limiting to CSE/IT dept anymore) In this regard, we are looking for volunteers to support our initiative in setting up of FOSS Labs (preferably freshers, who might be looking for experience in FOSS) and also everyone's feedback. Its really a commendable work. Is fedora-11 used as LTSP server? Yes, Fedora-11 was used as LTSP Server. > >Could you please share more details, on any special hardware used and the >software running in thin client ? Initially it was planned to setup with a single Quad-Core based XEON Server with 4 GB for 60 machines. but later I had suggested that, 2 Core-2 Duo PCs can be used for connecting 30 machines each. Now, 2 servers (Core-2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB SATA HDD) was setup using two DHCP servers without using range options (Thanks to Mr. Raman for the DHCP suggestions and all 60 thinclients, were now based on reservation in DHCP). The entire Fedora-11 for i386 Everything Repository with rpmfusion was setup on both the server for their future applications needs (Nearly 14,000+ rpm packages) and also YUMEX was configured to install the applications graphically and the technical staffs are trained to manage the entire Thinclient setup. Applicatins used: Codeblocks with GCC, Firefox, OpenOffice.org. Now, the management wants to have a similar setup in their boys and girls hostel for totally 60 machines. S. Re: [Ilugc] wireless datacard linux compatibility
>Of the current wireless datacard/usb devices supplied by the >any-time-anywhere-internet services available in Chennai which all, if any, >work in linux? Which one would you suggest? Yesterday Reliance Wireless Broadband+ marketing persons came to my office to demonstrate their wireless datacard where we have linux only machines and no windoze. I have inserted their Reliance Netconnect datacard in my Fedora-10 PC and just replaced their usename, password in my wvdial configuration and just connected in seconds and test the download speed and got average speed of 28kbps/35kpbs (tested about 10 minutes) and it was good for browsing and smaller downloads. Their wireless datacards support Highspeed Data transfer of about 3.1 MBps in 35 major cities and when I have tested 3 times, I have got only a max. of 35Kbps. Overall it is well supported by Linux (I have tested this in Fedora-10 and the wireless datacard is detected as /dev/ttyUSB0) and speed is also good for any mobile user. S. > >We (I mean ILUGC) being an informal organisation the best is to do >a.College seminar/workshop etc. So far we are doing mostly in engg > colleges. We should catch Science and polytechnics also. It's almost true that most of the seminar/workshop programs is being done only in engg. colleges. Last week monday, I went to a Arts and Science college near Arcot to meet the CS HOD (who is also my well wisher). He requested me to give a talk about FOSS and its importance to their PG students (M.C.A, M.Sc. IT). When I expressed my willingness, within less than 10 minutes he gathered around 50-55 students and informed about the activities of me and company and after that, I gave a talk about one hour in the class room and also showed some demonstration on FOSS tools to students and staffs. Finally, HOD introduced me to the principal and the principal was inspired to know about the benefits of FOSS and questioned HOD, when everything is available freely, then why they are purchasing proprietary softwares and also assured to use FOSS tools from the next academic year. The sys. admin of the college installed codeblocks with GCC for windows (replacing Turbo-C) and MySQL for windows in few machines, when I was there. So, as Mr. Raman says, more importance has to be given for Science colleges and Polytechnics. Many of my programs were also in Arts, Science colleges and Polytechnics (and especially in many rural areas). http://linuxbaskar.googlepages.com >c.Each member does something in his sphere of influence.
