So i want to ask you whether this will work, to delete grub and

No; this means you have a corrupted partition table. Wonder why
windughs is not complaining.

Try running testdisk froma live CD on the partition. testdisk will
recover the partition.

To rephrase it better, RECOVER the lost partition using testdisk.

If you are looking for replacing grub, then
-boot the system with Ubuntu live CD
-mount no other media device than your ubuntu root partition
-run $sudo grub-install
--root-directory=/media/0d104aff-ec8c-44c8-b811-92b993823444 /dev/sda

-reboot

Hello Rakesh,

I didn't asked that whether there is separate /home partition or not on the
HDD. Actually i suggested you to use one...:P And can you provide us your
installation/up-gradation logs of the broken machine? If possible. And also
tell us the hardware you are using. And do consider logs carefully, they can
give you a good idea about your problem like failure of up-gradation of
a particular package.

What did you do? Explaining that may help. Is this an ext4 partition?
Is the issue related to inability of certain versions of grub to load
ext4 partitions?

If so, installing the relevant module from grub command line may help.

I faintly recall breaking this system when I encountered that problem,
and none of the rescue CDs I had could support ext4. Was forced to do
a reinstall, first one in a loong time!!

Have you checked that?

Most of the users who follow the package manager do not run into problems.

Google search results do not suggest much. Many of the users simply do
not read the upgrade instructions properly and even then it works fine
for most people.

Do you have a study of the problems experienced to justify the statement?

2010-12-24 Thread Rakesh Kumar
Hi,
One of my friend was using ubuntu 10.04. Today she tried to update
the ubuntu (as she told me) then shut down her laptop (ubuntu not
asked to restart). When after few hours she tried to turn on her
laptop it couldn't be loaded showing an error message The disk drive
for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait or press S to
skip mounting or M for manual recovery. I told her to try in
accordance with the instructions but it couldn't recover her system.
As i could think that may be grub couldn't be updated due to
incorrect parameters or may kernel couldn't be updated properly.

I think she should delete the grub
by using :
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=256 count=1
or using hda instead of sda

and reinstall it by using the media. Please if any one has experienced
this problem, share your experience and suggest me something..

A slightly better way would be to have /home/ under a different
partition; and while re-installing, tell the installer to use the
specific partition, without initializing it, or whatever.

You need to be very careful, and read what the installer is telling.

My first guess is this is a UUID problem.

No need for the dd=... stuff. Simply booting from a live/rescue CD,
using the / partition in the installed HDD as the root partition and
then re-installing grub ought to solve the issue. The CD will ask you
to specify the partition to be used as the root partition, if you
choose a rescue option. Installing Grub from the CD may not work;
but YMMV. Also, if the version of the kernel on the rescue CD and the
installed partition are different, the procedure may fail.

A better option, if the rescue CD option fails, would be to use the
grub command line. This, assuming this is a UUID problem. Please
search the web (sorry, my browser is acting up ... I just upgraded)
for the term grub2 rescue documentation), before attempting
this. Basically, you should enter the command line within grub, edit
the boot paramaters, and edit the root= paramater in the line
starting with linux.

But, you should really be looking this up on the ubuntuforums.org
website. I guess they ought to know better.
