What wifi driver is being loaded? Find out with lsmod and may be we

Well according to the Restricted Drivers Manager, I have an Intel
PRO/Wireless 3945 Network Card. lsmod seems shows the driver as
ipw3945 and I'm guessing that's the right one. Some web pages suggest
blacklisting ipw3945 and loading iw3945 instead and that doesn't seem
to work either.

In a nutshell, the card is an Intel 3945 and which is properly
identified and has the correct driver loaded. Yet iwconfig doesn't
show the card and network-admin doesn't give me an option to go
wireless.. Any help would be mucho mucho appreciated..

Blacklisting in /etc/modprobe/blacklist will work only on next
bootor you have to rmmod the driver.

Yes some cards exhibit this behavior. You have the windows driver for
this card? Try using ndisgtk to load the windows driver. May be if you
bring this to the next LUG meeting we can try some suggestions...that
is if you can not get it working till then.

[ilugd] wifi cards at nehru place?

2007-04-21 Thread PJ

Howdy all,

I want a pci or usb wifi card that I can use in ad hoc mode and that is
currently common in Nehru Place.

I also want to avoid ndiswrapper and binary blobs for religious reasons. Anyone
got a non-evil card recently that they can recommend? Or am I doomed anyway
since the chipsets keep changing without warning while the model names remain
the same?

Hey, where's your sense of adventure? ;-)

I can understand why you wouldn't want to try it though, especially
if it's working just right for you.

I'm considering the Asus router as a mini network appliance for local
services (DNS etc), IPSEC endpoint, print and disk server (via a portable

Sorry for this lazy poster but need aqucik answer.
Can WiFi network be setup between two centrino laptops without any
 other WiFi instrastructure?
Pointers towards making this possible would be gratefully thanked.

Continuing with the same thread, what all hardware do i need to
connect my Wifi laptop to my desktop linux pc (void of any wifi
device)? What is the cost estimate? I hope the wlan0 interface can
then be used as a normal interface for routing purposes? For eg,
routing internet traffic generated from my laptop through my desktop
via wifi connection?

An ethernet cable. ;-)

You can get PCI 802.11b adapters, but I don't know how much they cost.
I'd recommend just buying a cheap access point instead.

Of course.
