Re: [efloraofindia:40236] Is it Bidaria khandalens?

2010-07-05 Thread Aparna Watve
Bidaria khandalense (= Gymnema khandalense) is a liane and the most
characteristic feature of this is presence of flat corky wings on the
stem which are long running along stems. Very few plants have such a
striking character and it is difficult to miss.

Mishra and Singh (2001) who worked on threatened plants of Maharashtra
report that it can be distinguished by broadly ovate and densely
puberulous leaves, orbicular calyx lobes and corolla puberulous on
both sides. However, I have seen both the plants and wild and do not
feel this character is strong enough to distinguish them. The winged
stem character is probably the best one and is very very obvious when
mature individuals are seen.

I do not see any specific distinguishing character in the photo by Dr.
Phadke. If you have any more photos, showing any of the distinguishing
characters we can discuss more on this. I am not aware of B.
khandalense reports in Amboli, but it certainly is present in
Khandala, Junnar, Karjat and Koyna forest areas.

However, the chances of the photo belonging to Gymnema sylvestre are
high as it is a much more common and variable plant.

Aparna

Re: [efloraofindia:40237] Is it Bidaria khandalens?

2010-07-05 Thread Satish Phadke
Thanks for the elaborate reply.
I was concentrating on the leaf character so the ID came to my mind.
The chances of *Gymnema sylvestre* appear to be high. The other picture
which I have posted from the same area had diifferent leaves so I concluded
the likely ID in that species but here I was confused due to the leaf shape.

2010-07-05 Thread Satish Phadke
Dear Rashida ji and Dinesh ji
*Khaya senegalensis* is probably one of the most favourite trees for
plantation by the roadside in Pune city from the garden Dept. next to *Cassia
siamea* and *Peltophorum ferruginea* in that order.
I have seen it flowering in spring and fruiting too.I think I have posted
its pictures earlier and can be searched.
Its foliage looks wonderful green and though the stem and trunk of the fully
grown tree looks smooth grey and robust it is weak and the big size branches
fall easily in hurricane since the tree is not native.

[efloraofindia:40241] Change in Phenology of plants of Abu Hills?

2010-07-05 Thread Satya Prakash
Dear Friends,

In our recent trip to Abu Hills, we were surprised to observe that many plant
species which are supposed to fruit in end of May, are devoid of fruits.
Species such as Carissa (Karonda), Malotus (Rohini), Syzygium (Jamun - two
species) are still flowering. No fruiting till date. As per our observations,
in June we use to collect fruits in this month. Our team members make regular
monthly trips of the different areas in Southern belt of Rajasthan.

Surprisingly, early flowering of orchids (Aerides sp.) were also noticed as per
discussions made with Dr Satish Kumar Sharma.

Experts may throw light on the probable reasons.

Let me share that the water availability (both surface and underground) on Abu
Hills is decreasing. Nakki Lake has limited water supply.

Shockingly, after ESZ notification of Abu Hills, the grey cover
(cement-concrete construction) increased on the name of beautification for the
tourism purpose. The constructions on large scale especially in the catchment
areas as well as open areas of water flow, are taking place with permission of
Municipal Board

Wrightia? will check the plant again soon.

Thanks Neil, attaching some more pics of the plant. The first pic. has one
branch with imparipinnate leaves,  the one seen on top right corner, the
rest are paripinnate. The last pair of leaflets were smaller and therefore
look as if they are from a different plant.

The bluish anthers and angled stem refers to Physalis angulata L. species.”
Muthu ji.

“Thanks to Tanay ji and Muthu ji for making me study this species and the
entire database on this species. It was quite an exercise. After going through
the research papers (both) links given by Dr. Vijayasankar ji in earlier posts,
I agree with Muthu ji's ID that my pics are indeed of Physalis angulata.
Infact, right from the first pictures from 2008 posted of this species by
Kiran ji, Satish Phadke ji, Suresh ji, Dr. Gurcharan ji, Dinesh ji all have
bluish anthers of the flowers and the purple venation on fruits ! In the
database we do not have ( correct me if I am wrong) any species with
greenish-yellow anthers indicative of Physalis minima L. So all the species so
far which have been ided as Physalis minima L. going by the paper, should be
Physalis angulata. This is nothwithstanding the variations in the size of the
petioles, leaf dentations and lenght the of pedicles.
Now the confusion : Kew database treats Physalis minima L., Physalis angulata
and Physalis lagascae as separate species. I am attaching one herbarium
specimen of Physalis lagascae and one of Physalis minima L.. There are records
for Physalis angulata but no herbarium specimen for download.
As Dr. Gurcharan ji has mentioned in the earlier thread GRIN considers
Physalis lagascae as syn. to Physalis minima L. Request feedback and a relook
of the database. Thank you.

German name Pfingstrose because it flowers in may / june, at the time of
Pfingston a christian religious day (in may / June)

The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius,
the Greek god of medicine and healing. Asclepius became jealous of his pupil;
Zeus saved Paeon from the wrath of Asclepius by turning him into the peony
flower.[3]

Dear All,

Peony root has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for
centuries. Peony flowers are also used medicinally, for example, in cough
syrups and in herbal teas. In combination with other herbs, peony has been
used to treat a wide variety of health conditions, including menstrual
problems, kidney problems, pulmonary heart disease, uterine fibroids, and
pneumonia. Peony has been applied to the skin to prevent wrinkles and has
been taken by mouth to treat pulmonary heart disease and liver problems
caused by chronic hepatitis. There is good scientific evidence of an effect
of peony in the treatment of pulmonary heart disease. There is also a
growing body of research on TCM formulas containing peony for women's health
conditions including menstrual problems, uterine fibroids, hormone
regulation, and heart disease prevention. Higher quality studies are needed
before a firm recommendation can be made.

Re: [efloraofindia:40265] Etymology -Oxalis latifolia

Dear Selvalakshmi,
Oxalic acid and oxalates are abundantly present in many plants. It was first
isolated from wood-sorrel (*Oxalis*). Its presence makes it dangerous to eat
unripe carambola or monstera fruits. It is also suggested to consume members
of the spinach family in moderation as they are high in oxylates.

Re: [efloraofindia:40307] Fruit for ID. - 03Jul2010AR01

2010-07-05 Thread tanay bose
 *Citrullus colocynthis* (L.) Schrad.

Cucurbitaceae
Colocynth, Bitter apple, Wild gourd (Biblical), Gall (Biblical)
Uses

Dried pulp of unripe fruit is used medicinally for its drastic purgative and
hydragogue cathartic action on the intestinal tract. When the fruit is ripe
its pulp dries to form a powder used as a bitter medicine and drastic
purgative. This powder is so inflammable that the Arabs collect it to use as
kindling. The fruit is used to repel moths from wool. In India, the vine is
planted as a sand binder. Seed, often removed from the poisonous pulp and
eaten in Central Sahara regions, contains a fixed oil.
Folk Medicine

Considered cathartic, ecbolic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hydragogue,
purgative, and vermifugal, the colocynth is used for amenorrhea, ascites,
bilious disorders, cancer, fever, jaundice, leukemia, rheumatism, snakebite,
tumors (especially of the abdomen), and urogenital disorders. According to
Hartwell the plant figures into remedies for cancer, carcinoma,
endothelioma, leukemia, corns, tumors of the liver and spleen, even the eye.
It is interesting to note that this folk cancer remedy contains three
antitumor ingredients: cucurbitacin B (active against PS-134 and KB tumor
systems), cucurbitacin E (active against LL and KB systems) and the
D-glucoside of beta-sitosterol (active against CA, LL and WA tumor systems).
The pulp or leaves is a folk remedy for cancerous tumors. A decoction of the
whole plant, made in juice of fennel, is said to help indurations of the
liver. Roots may also be used as purgative against ascites, for jaundice,
urinary diseases, rheumatism, and for snake-poison.
Chemistry

Active drug contains an ether-chloroform soluble resin, a phytosterol
glycoside (citrullol), other glucosides (elaterin, elatericin B and
dihydro-elatericin B), pectins and albuminoids. Bitter substance is
colocynthin and colocynthetin. Roots contain a-elaterin, hentriacontane, and
saponins. Per 100 g, the seed is reported to contain 556 calories, 6.7 g H2O,
23.6 g protein, 47.2 g fat, 19.5 g total carbohydrates, 1.5 g fiber, 3.0 g
ash, 46 mg Ca, and 580 mg P. The oil contains oleic, linoleic, myristic,
palmitic, and stearic acids. Seeds contain the phyto sterolin (ipurand), 2
phytosterols, 2 hydrocarbons, a saponin, an alkaloid, a polysaccharide or
glycoside, and tannin.
Description

Annual or perennial (in wild) herbaceous vine; stems angular and rough;
leaves rough, 3- to 7-lobed, 5-10 cm long, middle lobe sometimes ovate,
sinuses open; flowers monoecious, solitary, peduncled, axillary, corollas
5-lobed; ovary villous; fruit a pepo, nearly globular, 4-10 cm in diameter
with somewhat elliptical fissures, about size of small orange, green and
yellow variegated becoming yellow when ripe, with hard rind, pulp light in
weight, spongy, easily broken, light yellowish-orange to pale yellow;
intensely bitter; seeds numerous, ovoid, compressed, smooth, dark brown to
light yellowish-orange, borne on parietal placenta. Fl. summer.
Germplasm

Many cvs have been developed, but drug from these is inferior. Cultures in
New Mexico produce large fruits but are less active. Reported from the
Hindustani and Mediterranean Centers of Diversity, colocynth, or cvs
thereof, is reported to tolerate bacteria, drought, high pH, low pH, sand
and virus (2*n* = 22, 24) (Duke, 1978).
Distribution

Native to dry areas of North Africa, being common throughout the Sahara,
areas of Morocco, Egypt and Sudan, eastward through Iran to India and other
parts of tropical Asia. Has been known since Biblical times and cultivated
in the Mediterranean region, especially in Cyprus and in India for many
centuries.
Ecology

Ranging from Cool Temperate Moist through Tropical Desert to Wet Forest Life
Zones, colocynth is reported to tolerate annual precipitation of 3.8 to 42.9
dm (mean of 10 cases = 11.9), annual temperature of 14.8 to 27.8°C (mean of
10 cases = 22.5), and pH of 5.0 to 7.8 (mean of 8 cases = 6.8). A highly
xerophytic plant, it thrives where mean annual temperature is from 23-27°C
and annual rainfall ranges from 25-37 cm. Thrives on sandy loam, subdesert
soils, and along sandy sea coasts.
Cultivation

Easily cultivated from seed, as it grows rapidly, requiring no attention
once fields have been sown.
Harvesting

In most regions where it is native, the crop is harvested from wild plants.
Fruits gathered when still unripe but fully developed. Fruit is hand-picked,
the thin, hard, gourd-like outer ring (pericarp) removed by peeling, and
inner white spongy pulp filled with seeds, is dried in the sun or in ovens.
Seeds constitute about 75% the weight of the dried product. Commercial
colocynth occurs in two forms: as pulp from which most of seeds have been
removed, and as 'bitter apples' or masses of pulp filled with seeds that
have been rolled into balls. Both forms usually shipped in boxes.
Yields and Economics

Duke (1978) reported a seed yield of 6,700 kg/ha. Commercial supplies
obtained from wild and cultivated

Citrullus colocynthis(L.) Schrad.
Cucurbitaceae
Colocynth, Bitter apple, Wild gourd (Biblical), Gall (Biblical)
Uses
Dried pulp of unripe fruit is used medicinally for its drastic purgative and
hydragogue cathartic action on the intestinal tract. When the fruit is ripe its
pulp dries to form a powder used as a bitter medicine and drastic purgative.
This powder is so inflammable that the Arabs collect it to use as kindling. The
fruit is used to repel moths from wool. In India, the vine is planted as a sand
binder. Seed, often removed from the poisonous pulp and eaten in Central Sahara
regions, contains a fixed oil.

Folk Medicine
Considered cathartic, ecbolic, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hydragogue, purgative,
and vermifugal, the colocynth is used for amenorrhea, ascites, bilious
disorders, cancer, fever, jaundice, leukemia, rheumatism, snakebite, tumors
(especially of the abdomen), and urogenital disorders. According to Hartwell
the
plant figures into remedies for cancer, carcinoma, endothelioma, leukemia,
corns, tumors of the liver and spleen, even the eye. It is interesting to note
that this folk cancer remedy contains three antitumor ingredients:
cucurbitacin B (active against PS-134 and KB tumor systems), cucurbitacin E
(active against LL and KB systems) and the D-glucoside of beta-sitosterol
(active against CA, LL and WA tumor systems). The pulp or leaves is a folk
remedy for cancerous tumors. A decoction of the whole plant, made in juice of
fennel, is said to help indurations of the liver. Roots may also be used as
purgative against ascites, for jaundice, urinary diseases, rheumatism, and for
snake-poison.

Chemistry
Active drug contains an ether-chloroform soluble resin, a phytosterol glycoside
(citrullol), other glucosides (elaterin, elatericin B and dihydro-elatericin
B),
pectins and albuminoids. Bitter substance is colocynthin and colocynthetin.
Roots contain a-elaterin, hentriacontane, and saponins. Per 100 g, the seed is
reported to contain 556 calories, 6.7 g H2O, 23.6 g protein, 47.2 g fat, 19.5 g
total carbohydrates, 1.5 g fiber, 3.0 g ash, 46 mg Ca, and 580 mg P. The oil
contains oleic, linoleic, myristic, palmitic, and stearic acids. Seeds contain
the phyto sterolin (ipurand), 2 phytosterols, 2 hydrocarbons, a saponin, an
alkaloid, a polysaccharide or glycoside, and tannin.

Description
Annual or perennial (in wild) herbaceous vine; stems angular and rough; leaves
rough, 3- to 7-lobed, 5-10 cm long, middle lobe sometimes ovate, sinuses open;
flowers monoecious, solitary, peduncled, axillary, corollas 5-lobed; ovary
villous; fruit a pepo, nearly globular, 4-10 cm in diameter with somewhat
elliptical fissures, about size of small orange, green and yellow variegated
becoming yellow when ripe, with hard rind, pulp light in weight, spongy, easily
broken, light yellowish-orange to pale yellow; intensely bitter; seeds
numerous,
ovoid, compressed, smooth, dark brown to light yellowish-orange, borne on
parietal placenta. Fl. summer.

Germplasm
Many cvs have been developed, but drug from these is inferior. Cultures in New
Mexico produce large fruits but are less active. Reported from the Hindustani
and Mediterranean Centers of Diversity, colocynth, or cvs thereof, is reported
to tolerate bacteria, drought, high pH, low pH, sand and virus (2n = 22, 24)
(Duke, 1978).

Distribution
Native to dry areas of North Africa, being common throughout the Sahara, areas
of Morocco, Egypt and Sudan, eastward through Iran to India and other parts of
tropical Asia. Has been known since Biblical times and

Hemant Karkare in 26/11. Yet the CBI did not file a chargesheet after
keeping the accused in custody for 60 days. WHY?

The channels, strangely are silent about the event.
