Yes Muthu ji. Your doubt is genuine. The leaves of A. pungens more or less
rounded in outline, and perianth with sharper tips. This *could be A.

Here is the key for genus Rubus from Flora Simlensis

Flowers white
  Leaves simple,
lobed.R.
paniculatus Smith
  Leaves compound
   Lower surface of leaflets green,
glabrous.R. macilentus
Camb.
Lower surface of leaflets gray- or white-tomentose
Stem and branches shaggy, with long tawny
bristles...R. ellipticus Smith
Stem and branches glabrous, covered with white
bloom...R. biflorus
Flowers Pink, leaves compound
Leaflets 3, rarely 5; calyx lobes long pointed; druplets
pinkR. niveus Wall
Leaflets 5-11, calyx lobes acute; drupelets
black..R. lasiocarpus Smith

Rubus lasiocarpus Smith is now correctly known as R. niveus Thunb.
Rubus niveus Wall is now correctly known as R. pedunculosus D. Don

For your plant, the closest match is R. pedunculosus D. Don (syn: R. niveus
Wall.; R. hypagyrus Edgew.) but be for look out for other closer species
like R. hoffmeisterianus Kunth and Bouch (which is similar but upper leaflet
largest and often 3-lobed, recurved prickles on rachis and young shoots);
both have 3 leaflets, leaves white beneath, fruits orange to red and flowers
pink.

Re: [efloraofindia:70423] Re: Please identify this tree

2011-05-26 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Dear Neil ji and Dinesh ji

The link and discussion cited by Neil ji was dated in 2009, and lot has
changed since the publication of KEW Plant List in 2010. It still contains
some ambiguities but hope we will have to live with these for at least 2-3
years more till things are sorted out.

The name Morinda pubescens Sm., according to Kew Plant List is unplaced
name, yet to be resolved

In Flora of British India, Sir J D Hooker, while naming the variety M.
tinctoria var. tomentosa Hook.f. did cite M. tomentosa Heyne in Roth as the
first synonym, but perhaps the two plants are different (Hooker also gave
differentiating characters as leaves tomentose on both surfaces, peduncles
leaf-opposed) and that is why the entry at Kew Plant List as well TROPICOS
(and Fernandez, Trees of Mumbai, page 174, 1999--though I have not seen
this) lists the variety as tomentosa Hook.f and not (Heyne ex Roth) Hook.f.,
similarly Fernandez while transferring this to species to *M. coreia*
Buch.-Ham.,
names it as *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. var. *tomentosa *(Hook.f.) Fernandez and
not *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. var. tomentosa (Heyne ex Roth) Fernandez.
..This taxon (excluding M. tomentosa Hehne ex Roth) is
according to KEW Plant List synonym of M. *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. In fact M.
tinctoria Roxb. itself is synonym of *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham

 http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-129800

The fact that two (*M. tinctoria* var. *tomentosa* Hook.f. and M. tomentosa
Heyne ex Roth) are different is supported by the fact that *M.
tomentosa*Heyne ex Roth is now considered as synonym of
*M. citrifolia* L.

http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-129953

Perhaps both species (M. coreia and M. citrifolia) occur in India and a
reliable recent key should help.

Perhaps the easiest difference between the two species

Leaves shining and glabrous on both
surfacesMorinda citrifolia
Leaves tomentose on both
surfaces..Morinda coreia

In light of this above plant should be M. coreia

(and Fernandez, Trees of Mumbai, page 174, 1999--though I have not seen
this) lists the variety as tomentosa Hook.f and not (Heyne ex Roth) Hook.f.,
similarly Fernandez while transferring this to species to *M. coreia*
 Buch.-Ham.,
names it as *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. var. *tomentosa *(Hook.f.) Fernandez
and not *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. var. tomentosa (Heyne ex Roth) Fernandez.
..This taxon (excluding M. tomentosa Hehne ex Roth) is
according to KEW Plant List synonym of M. *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham. In fact
 M. tinctoria Roxb. itself is synonym of *M. coreia* Buch.-Ham

  http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-129800

The fact that two (*M. tinctoria* var. *tomentosa* Hook.f. and M.
tomentosa Heyne ex Roth) are different is supported by the fact that *M.
tomentosa* Heyne ex Roth is now considered as synonym of *M. citrifolia*L.

 http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-129953

Perhaps both species (M. coreia and M. citrifolia) occur in India and a
 reliable recent key should help.

While hunting for Rubus, be on watch for: number of leaflets, palmate
(arising from one point, like Ceiba) or pinnate (like rose), undersurface of
leaf (get at least one photograph), prickles on stem and rachis/petiole,
flower colour and diam, calyx lobes shape and length (do focus it) and
colour of mature fruits. Luckily you will usually find all these on the same
plant, some times late in the flowering season.

Rubus lasiocarpus Smith is now correctly known as R. niveus Thunb.

For your plant, the closest match is R. pedunculosus D. Don (syn: R. niveus
Wall.; R. hypagyrus Edgew.) but be for look out for other closer species
like R. hoffmeisterianus Kunth and Bouch (which is similar but upper leaflet
 largest and often 3-lobed, recurved prickles on rachis and young shoots);
both have 3 leaflets, leaves white beneath, fruits orange to red and flowers
 pink.

Perhaps any publication which describes or keys out the two
species
   should
help.

This link should help in understanding Thymus serpyllum

 in
India most of the earlier authors reported T. linearis of Indian
Himalaya with the name of preceding species. In Indian Himalaya
 only
one species of Thyme grows i.e. T. linearis as collected by you
 from
kashmir and manali.

 Yes Amit ji
This population seems to be different from ones I have seen in

By the way the correct name for our species is now Thymus
 linearis

*Thymus linearis* Benth., Pl. Asiat. Rar. 1: 31 1830.
syn: Thymus serpyllum auct. Himal (non L.)
