Greetings from Britain to you all. Thank you for your amusing stories and pics. Good to see what you look like Pankaj! Usha my wee digital camera goes with me to all the wonderful gardens we visit in Britain. The climate here means we can grow plants from all over the world. Except hot tropical ones! I am learning all the time and love to find plants that I have not seen before. I now have a very extensive picture library, (many taken in our own garden) As well as wild flowers in the hedgerows. I try to get a record of the leaves ,flowers , seeds and any other interesting features through the changing seasons. I am fascinated by the shape of leaves. All pics are labelled with full latin name, and are a terrific aide memoir when I try to help others on other forums to id their plants. ( It has become an addiction!) I love it when a forum has experts and amateurs, such as myself, from all over the world, prepared to help others id a plant. The internet is just AMAZING! I am afraid I completely missed the last 4 posts. Next question... Why? I started by asking for e mail notifications. But my in box was completely flooded with 100's of posts . So I opted out. Now, I seem to be missing replies to my own threads. How can this be sorted? Help reqested yet again. I never have any problems on any other forum... just this one! Sheila. Dear all, How could it be possible to identify a specimen of Amorphophallus from its infructuscence. I think most of the species have same kind of berries as seen in the picture.. Especially in Amorphophallus and Arisaema, 100 % identification is not possible from the vegetative phase. During my last trip to Orissa, I could collect the berries of two Amorophophallus plant which I thought to be same and were exactly similar in their morphology. However, the size and number of seeds were different in both the plants. Am not an expert in Amorphophallus but I think both the plants are different. Regarding the plant in the picture, we can conclude it as A.bulbifer, only if we could see any bulbils on the leaves but I am not sure whether this character is exclusive to this species. [efloraindia:100092] The confusion of Pimpernels: Let us be on look out
The common pimpernel has confused both field workers and reputed authors alike, but luckily the confusion seems to have been resolved more recently. Carolus Linnaeus, the Father of Taxonomy described two closely related species of Anagallis: *Anagallis arvensis* L., the scarlet pimpernel with orange-scarlet to scarlet flowers *Anagallis caerulea* L., the blue pimpernel with blue flowers The two are now treated as two varieties var. arvensis and var. caerulea (L.) Gouan of Anagallis arvensis L. Schreber, Spic. Fl. Lips. 5 1771 described a related species Anagallis coerulea (note slight difference in spellings), also used by Lamarck, a taxon that had been long treated as same var. caerulea of A. arvensis. It was only in 1972 that Fergussen established it to be a synonym of a distinct species Anagallis foemina Miller (1768). The plant List treats this as Anagallis arvensis subsp. foemina (Mill.) Schinz Thell. Important to note that this taxon always has blue flowers. This is how the two species can be differentiated: *Anagallis arvensis Anagallis foemina* *(or Anagallis arvensis subsp. arvensis) (or Anagallis arvensis subsp. foemina (Mill.) Schinz Thell.)* 1. Flowers scarlet (var. arvensis) or blue (var. caerulea)1. Flowers blue 2. Pedicel in flower longer than subtending leaf. 2. Pedicel in flower shorter or equal to the subtending leaf. 3. Sepals shorter than sepals especially in bud 3. Sepals equalling or longer than petals especially in bud 4. Petal margins overlapping 4. Petal margins not overlapping 5. Petal margins with numerous hairs tipped with 5. With few or no hairs, which if present have elongate globose glands. terminal cells. Let us look for our blue pimpernel (blue flowered Anagallis) more closely in light of above information to find its exact identity. Who knows we may have both taxa in India. -- Dr. Gurcharan Singh Retired Associate Professor SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007 Res: 932 Anand Kunj, Vikas Puri, New Delhi-110018.
