Re: [efloraofindia:147751] Re: Hooghly Today : Bauhinia variegata L.

2013-03-02 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Yes Surajit ji. That confirms B. variegata. Further B. blakeana generally
flowers in November December with leaves on. In variegata the flowers
generally appear in January-March before leaves, B. purpurea in late summer
along with leaves. That is the situation in Delhi.

I used the KEY (for *B. variegata* L), *flowers appearing generally

Regarding the identity of B. nervifolium and B. reinwardtii, it is quite
simple

Flower pedicels are always longer than sepals in B. reinwardtii, but the

RE: [efloraofindia:147761] Fruit for id from Manali-NS 2012

2013-03-02 Thread Pascal Bruggeman
Dear dr. Singh,

I think your assesment is correct, this indeed is the fruit of Sauromatum
venosum, the fruits are often half buried in the soil as can be seen on this
picture:

http://www.jmvanberkel.nl/nl/sauromatum-venosum-11-20091001.html

They usually start to color from red to purple when fully ripe. In contrast
to several other Araceae do the peduncles of Sauromatum not extend after
pollination so the fruit will be at the same level as the initial
inflorescence: close to the soil. A more compact form of S. venosum can be
found in Maharashtra state, the Himalayan forms tend to be taller and more
lush.

Pascal

Dear All,

This fruit was earlier found by me and Balkar Ji in Shimla (in 2010), no
associated vegetative parts were around...again I got it in Manali, in
similar condition, the fruits were lying on ground as if borne on a very
short peduncle, but peduncle could not be seen...looks like any member from
Araceae..closest I can think is Sauromatum venosumwant to have your
opinion please...

photographs for identification:

1. Height of plant
2. Leaves alternate, opposite or in whorls
3. Leaf margin, especially glands on teeth tips
4. Glands at base of petiole
5. Flower size and colour or shades
6. Inflorescence type, racemen, umbellate cluster or solitary
7. size, form of spur, straight or curved, nature of tip

usually lobed, placentation axile, ovules usually 2 in each loculus,
anatropous or campylotropous, style 1, slender and beaklike. Fruit a
capsular dehiscent schizocarp
with 5 1-seeded segments that separate elastically from central column, and
often opening to release seeds (Geranium), or indehiscent schizocarp

 Yes Aartiji
 This is Euphorbia species
Difference between Euphorbia and Cactus are as follows
The spines in a cactus are many and come from a circular area called
 aerole.
In Euphorbia there is no aerole and spines are only 2[modified stipules]

Euphorbia has white latex, cactus generally has transparent sap

All cacti are exotic, they come from America. Many Euphorbia species are
 indigenous[eg E.nerifolia,E.lactea.]

In catus the flower is solitary[usually big and showy].In euphobia it is a
group of tiny flowers..flower head..male and female separate lacking
 petals[Chyme inflorescence]

Thank you Sir for confirming one more time. I will be adding the key link (

Looking forward to see a *B. blakeana* here, in our region.

Yes Surajit ji. That confirms B. variegata. Further B. blakeana generally
flowers in November December with leaves on. In variegata the flowers
generally appear in January-March before leaves, B. purpurea in late summer

It is possible that this plant may well be *B. blakeana*.

While i was taking pictures of this particular tree i checked for pods
 and there wasn't any.
But, at the same time i recalled that last year i had a very similar
experience, initially there was no pods and later the tree was full of pods.

I used the KEY (for *B. variegata* L), *flowers appearing generally
before leaves* or *flowers 10-12 cm across, after leaves fall*, to
identify this tree. The KEY was prepared by you in -

I do suspect it is a *Cleistocactus *(although my *Bergerocactus* shows

Spines are too long/shaggy for *C. variispinus*. No other species is quite
that golden normally. The shaggier spines at the distal end are throwing me
off...looks almost like my *Arthrocereus melanurus*, but a bit too dark in
color. Probably need a flower to be sure or at least pin it down a bit more.

Re: [efloraofindia:147815] Re: KEY to Genera

2013-03-02 Thread J.M. Garg
Thanks, Surajit ji,
I am also putting the Keys at top in future editing of efi site pages
(along with description, pronoununciation, common names, uses etc) e.g. Acmella
radicanshttps://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a---l/ar/asteraceae/acmella/acmella-radicans
edited
yesterday.
So with in a year or so, such keys will be available at the top of various
efi site pages.

Also when ever similar species are discussed on an efi site page, the page
species is in red ink, while the informations about other similar species
are in blue ink.

With the colour scheme as below, perusal of efi site pages becomes very
easy (One has to look for a particular colour to know about a particular
aspect):
