 Earlier feedback

 Giby jiI think it is
 Myristica malabarica of Myristicaceae family.

Please cross check with any flora. Please cut open the fruit as see
whether the seeds are red arillated and when you make a cut on the
bark there would be red sap oozing out.

 http://www.biotik.org/india/species/m/myrimala/myrimala_en.html

But your description about fruits, opposite leaves and the place it is
collected provoked my thoughts and made me rethink. Now I don't think
that it is Myristica. Let me check it again.
Do you have a close up of leaves and fruit by any chance?

I photographed this tree in fruit at Savandurga hill, near Magadi about 60
km west of Bangalore on 28th July. The tree was one of many in a cluster in
rocky habitat; not very large - about 4-6 m in height, with opposite,
elliptic leaves, with mature ones 6-8 cm long, and orange fruit about 1-1.5
cm across. The skin of the fruit had a fibrous inner layer, and
transluscent, watery pulp (with the consistency of litchi pulp, also
reminded me of *Cordia*) surrounded a single stone (the pulp was slightly
sour). The leaves of some trees were infested with galls on the upper
surface. I'd be grateful for any help in identification.

I had it in my garden. Very interesting in the sense, the spines were
hooked and hence if it gets stuck on anything, it used to break off
the mother plant. May be a kind of vegetative dispersal.

It doesn't look like *Myristica *to me. If at all, then it may be M.

more to *Ximenia americana*. A clearer picture of fruits and leaves would
help to confirm the id.

Please cross check with any flora. Please cut open the fruit as see
whether the seeds are red arillated and when you make a cut on the
bark there would be red sap oozing out.

But your description about fruits, opposite leaves and the place it is
collected provoked my thoughts and made me rethink. Now I don't think
that it is Myristica. Let me check it again.
Do you have a close up of leaves and fruit by any chance?

 To: indiantreepix@googlegroups.com

Dear Neil:

Thanks for adding MITES and Gallic acid...
I had forgotten about Gallic acid...
that's the Gallic acid of pyrogallol etc, I guess.

I found your earlier gall picture (one of many) at this url:

spectacular picture.

But I dont see any pictures from you in this thread, did add some new

Thanks,.

Alok ji Geranium wallichianum can be easily differentiated from other large
flowered species (G. collinum, G. grevilleanum, G. wallichianum, G.
tuberaria) in that stipules are very large (1-2 cm long), very broad
(ovate-oblong) and often common between two leaves on each side(due to
fusion of two adjacent stipules; may be often bifid). In other species the
stipules are very narrow, linear, usually less than 1 cm long and two
between two adjacent leaves on each side (they are free not united).

Diospyros ok... what kind? I cant tell just from leaves.. not an
expert by any means

BUT but definitely not Nyctanthus..

Parijat leaves.. young ones are never red... AND never droop as they
are here...in the second set of pictures...
I should perhaps know... my mom's garden had two... for more than 40
years...

I grew up playing under them... and collecting flowers... local women
came to collect these ..they used to leave their saris spread under
the trees.. since the flowers open around 4 am and drop as the day
light becomes harsher..best one were the ones that dropped early on..
used for various pujas... and some underhanded folks use the dried
stalks to adulterate saffron sold in the market ...

@Bhagyashri: what you wrote about Parijat is true.. but this plant in
the pic is not a Parijat...
