[Inkscape-docs] Website design

2016-10-12 Thread Sylvain Chiron
Hi,

Docs and devel are very excited these days and I’m a bit overwhelmed —
well, it’s good to see motivation out there —, but I also have something
to say just in accordance with the recent website release you might have
noticed.

The first point is that I tried to contact you, Hinerangi, as the
website designer, about the website responsive view for mobile
platforms. Now Inkscape.org will look nice on your cell!
See my initial bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web/+bug/1614196
Martin and I wanted to know if you had an opinion regarding this design;
you might not have received my e-mail.
It’s now possible to view the design directly on Inkscape.org, either
with your phone browser or your desktop browser’s responsive view.
You could also have an opinion concerning the fairly new modal dialogs,
or any other good work from Martin & co.

The second point is for the website editors: as you may have seen, now
our parent menus do no longer link to a page when clicked, but instead
there’s a submenu item in bold font. Initially I set this for the
touch-screen devices: you should be able to open the menu, then select
the page. But Martin told me to apply this mechanism everywhere. He said
that some visitors complained about the parent items being
unclear/confusing. Well, you see, you have an ‘About’ page with
‘Inkscape Overview’ in it as a title, but also ‘Overview’ as a submenu.
Recognize it’s weird — :S.
The current solution is not ideal and we should actually aim to remove
the parent menu items; means putting the interesting content in the
subitems, possibly creating a new subpage.
* ‘About’ may disappear silently.
* ‘Download’ will be changed soon, for the new Releases management system.
* In ‘News’, we should have a ‘Latest News’ submenu (probably not for
editors…).
* ‘Learn’ may disappear silently.
* ‘Develop’ should have ‘Getting Started’ as first menu item.
* ‘Contribute’ should have a similar thing, such as ‘Let’s go’.
* ‘Support Us’ might have a synthetical submenu, or disappear.
* For ‘Community’ it looks a bit more complicated.
Maybe not for right now but at least you’re aware — ;).
For the parent URL (that would become inaccessible from the UI), we
would have a redirect to the first subitem as a fallback, I’d say.

Good night,

Looks slangish, chewed words between friends and guys from a common
community. Quite cool.
Yes, the drawings are very nice.

We’re waiting for your bug report then — :).

Do you have editor access? I said that for the website editors.

Thanks, will be very helpful.

Nice to meet you Hinerangi. (Then I’ll send another mail about the
website design…)

Means I wasn’t much more informed than Brynn, I thought Elisa did these
translations before me. Well, you should add your name in the About chapter.

I know who you are, I got interested in Inkscape.org’s details and
you’re linked from the footer — :).
I had initially planned Brynn would involve for reviewing my
translations once greatly done, but of course you can check them too.

I couldn’t go far during last 6 months; yes, some help from Fred and you
would be really appropriate.

Weird… You might look for sending plain text e-mails, rather than HTML ones.

Generate balloons, load css font (e.g. ttf), convert lower layer to png
and just use svg as overlay. Stick some js in there or some css
animations for a fun time.

https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=tutorial/

You can submit to this category a link to a youtube tutorial, and if we
can collect them, it'd be really useful. (tag them as video)

Yes, but I think the SVGs are heavier than the PNGs on the page. I'd also have
to load the fonts (anime ace 2) and make sure the dialogue balloons can contain
the text in all languages.

I've been thinking of adding a link to the SVG in the meantime, which would be
a good compromise at this stage.

Just joined and checked your email. I met Elisa over the summer and I'm
familiar with the doc (although I haven't read the manual yet). I'll see if I
can find the time to do some translations.

I think I do have the skills, I just need to do some prioritizing.

Did you know, you could post the images as svg files and make the text
translatable ;-)

Curating existing youtube videos would be a really big help. Getting
them all into a youtube playlist and being able to put them into the
inkscape website gallery system. We have a system where if you post a
youtube video, the video will be embeded into the page and so we can
collect them and put them into the website fairly easily.

It’s on topic. Maybe you’d mind reading the indented paragraph there:

By the way, I don’t really understand the 40px left margin. When
browsing the site with a mobile phone, it’s quite annoying.

Then I think you should join inkscape-docs. Did you see my last emails
to the docs list?
Actually you’re arriving just in time, I was requesting help for the
second-to-last item in the Community To-Do List:

Have a look at this message:
