Re: [IRCA] Tecsun's New PL-310 DSP Receiver-- the Ultimate Ultralight?
Hi Gary, Thank you for the great article! A few weeks ago someone mentioned a PL-300WT (G8) is not as susceptible to overloading as an Eton E100. Is this still true with the PL-310? On a business trip last May to Salt Lake City, Utah I noticed the E100 was very prone to severe overloading across the entire MW spectrum. It made DXing impossible above ~ 900 kHz. Would the PL-310 be better than an Eton E100 in a high-RF, urban environment such as SLC? Thanks 73! As much as I dislike Microsoft Outlook for its ease of being spammed, you can download to Outlook, then disable the internet connection and then read emails later without internet connection. Or at least you could a few years back when I last tried it. I still have an Outlook .pst file with several years' worth of messages I downloaded when I gave Hotmail the boot. Well, when I tried this this weekend in Masset, I was able to download the messages to Thunderbird, but when off-line, none of the content could be read and instead I'd get an error message saying that I was not on-line. Hmmm, if you have your copy of Eudora on the machine you're presently using, you should be able to download your e-mail directly to it no matter which ISP you're presently using. Certainly, I've done if for years from various locations using different hardware connections to the web as well as, of course, multiple ISPs. Have you tried running Eudora and doing that, exactly as if you're at home? I've never had to change Eudora's settings to do it, but depending on what Shaw expects, you may need to, but at least it IS possible. Re: [IRCA] Tecsun's New PL-310 DSP Receiver-- the Ultimate Ultralight?
Hi Chris; I have no real issues like that with my Eton E100. That is so weird! During the day I get some mixing products 910 KHz removed from the parent frequency (i.e. 1430 on 520). If I place my Select-a-tenna next to the radio, and peak it for the product frequency, the product signals vanish. That is the only issue and it's a known one but not overloading. The only thing close to overloading is splatter from WNDE 1260 on their day ND day rig. I am about 5 miles away from their Fall Creek Road site and from 1190 KHz on up, you hear what sounds like a bass drum, thumping. I don't notice this behavior going the other way (1270 on up), except for WNDE's IBOC buzz. This happens on every radio that I own but I wouldn't say that is overloading either. GARY: Thanks for the review! Re: [IRCA] Tecsun's New PL-310 DSP Receiver-- the Ultimate Ultralight?
Hi Chris, Thanks for your question. During detailed testing of the new PL-310 in my suburban location, there was no problem at all with overloading-- and the DSP Ultralights in general have developed a reputation for being almost crunch-proof in resistance to overloading. There were also no AM spurs or mixing products detected, although like the PL-300WT (and G8) models there are some internally-generated heterodynes, as detailed in the PL-310 review article. My 9' (side) PVC box loop will severely overload most Ultralight radios when tuning in locals, but the DSP Ultralights (PL-310, PL-300WT, G8, D96L and D92L) are unfazed by such massive RF. My guess is that you will have no problem at all in overloading with the new PL-310, even in urban areas. 73, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) In a message dated 10/13/2009 12:33:30 A.M. [IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 10-13-- Low Average
Hello All, With the sunrise peak enhancements getting later and later, lately it's tough to find much DX before around 1405 UTC here. Although there was a decent peak around 1415, not many second-tier TP's rose up to decent levels-- and the ones that did had been logged already. 603-HLSA/ China mix, 738-Taiwan Fisheries/ HLKG mix and 1134-KBS all were close to 9 levels around 1415 on the 9' box loop, but these have all been regulars this month. There was audio on 1107 kHz again around 1418, with what sounded like American jazz music-- but still no ID clues. Some of the TP frequencies that usually have weak co-channels during good conditions (621, 666, 675, 792 and 891) didn't have them this morning, indicating that conditions were less than optimal. [IRCA] Day TWO at Grayland
After I uploaded yesterday, I got to thinking how ungrateful I was for the less than wonderful conditions down here. After all it is quite a bit of expense and two long travel days to come to Grayland from Orcas and return... and to find reception no better than at home is a downer. STILL, the first morning at Grayland did bring me more than 60 TP loggings, some at quite good levels. I'm rather sure that in a few years when the Sun Spot Cycle really kicks in, we would all be overjoyed to have 60 TPs on a full DXpedition! So, forgive me for being a whiner! This morning was a repeat of yesterday if anything, it was a bit poorer. Again, the Japanese were in fairly well, but all except the quite regular Koreans and Chinese were missing or down in the mud and no exotic Thai, Indian or god help us, Andaman Islands (!) stations were evident. I did watch 1548 like a hawk for DW Sri Lanka, now almost a Fall regular for Bruce and Chuck, but nothing rose above the murmur level. Still, I added 15 stations to the log, including Aussie powerhouses on 612, 576 and 792 during a minor post-dawn DU opening it may have been a more extensive opening, but the DU path is almost off the side of my Asia all the way Wellbrook aimed at 305 degrees (Aussies are out at 240 degrees or so.) The more unusual JJs were 648 JOIG NHK1, Toyama; 1413 JOIF, Fukuoka; 603, NHK1 Synchros and 1593, NHK2 Synchros wiping out CNR1's synchros. I also managed a reportable logging of KOTZ, 720 Kotzebue, Alaska to see, yet again, if I can get a QSL out of this NPR station. I gotta admit feeling sorry for my long-time DX partner, Guy Atkins on this trip. He is trying out a new Lankford Array down at the State Park, a mile to my south. We have light rain, 45 degrees and fairly high wind now and for the next four or five days; Guy is in a (very nice) tent, camped in low coastal trees and heavy brush, 200 rainey feet from the nearest toilet. Room 15 at the Grayland Motel never felt so good :) Given that this is the heart of the Asian Season, Guy and I both are hoping for improved conditions for tomorrow. John B. [IRCA] KBRW-680 QSL
Yesterday, I received a QSL from a long sought DX target. KBRW sent a friendly e-mail reply to e-mail report + audio file in less than a day. V/s Mike Lane, GM said he tried DXing when he first arrived in Barrow 30+ years ago, but the only station he could regularly hear was WLW (in addition to unid Asians). I've uploaded the audio clip in case anyone wants to hear it http://home.comcast.net/~bportzer/KBRW-680_0900_10-3-09.mp3 This was at Grayland on October 3. Bruce, Congrats! I am glad they are still DXer friendly. I got a verie letter last year. They are a toughie to log. If it wasn't for KNBR, I am sure KBRW would be more common. Re: [IRCA] Day TWO at Grayland
Hi John, If you have been reading the daily TP reports from around Puget Sound (and Victoria), you certainly know that the conditions haven't been very thrilling here, either. This afternoon I saw Rochelle Atkins in the Puyallup post office, and she was telling me of Guy's hard work to get the QDFA array ready for the Grayland DXpedition. I sure hope that TP propagation turns for the better soon-- especially for Guy. Having tested many new loop antennas at Grayland this summer, the propagation was always a big question mark that could either make or break the impressions of a new antenna, and affect the MP3 recordings either way. 73, Gary In a message dated 10/13/2009 3:52:44 P.M. What a shock! And around 0500 it was also getting Spain-684 barefoot good enough to tell it was Spanish. Earlier it got France-1296 readable with loop, and traces of it barefoot.
