[IRCA] John Bryant - In Memoriam

2010-02-11 Thread Guy Atkins
I've placed one of my favorite photos of John in a posting on my blog, along
with a few words. It is hard to write any more in depth than I have...the
feelings of loss are still too strong.

The photo was taken last year at John and Linda's Orcas Island home, during
one of our family's visits.

Please feel free to leave any thoughts or memories of John in the comments
section of the post.

As a foreign DXer I am sure the International DX Community will be benefited.

I stress the need to have John Bryant's works published online for the benefit
of foreign DXers that haven't had read those referential material. As in all
aspects of life, improving culture is a must for every individual if he wants
to grow as a person. As in other aspects of life, the same applies to DXing,
its phenomena and its techniques. A better dissemination of information will
bring better DXers worldwide.

Re: [IRCA] 1550 with oldies

2010-02-11 Thread HASCALL, DAVID CIV DFAS
Hi Bill;

I think that the consensus is that you heard KFRC - CA. That being
said, you might want to consider using this website.
http://www.topazdesigns.com/ambc/ On the far right there is a section
Station Search. You choose the frequency, put in the call that you
*think* that you heard (in your case ksrc), make sure that search type
is marked as fuzzy and click callsign search and voila, KFRC is the
only result. You can use question marks as wild cards. This works very
well. It is a very handy tool and has helped me resolve countless
unIDs.

Good luck and 73,

[IRCA] John Bryant obituary

2010-02-11 Thread Glenn Hauser

Memorial for John Hulon Bryant View / Sign Guestbook [with portrait]

John Hulon Bryant, 68, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at St. John
Medical Center in Tulsa, following a severe head injury sustained as the result
of a fall from a ladder. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on
Friday, February 12, 2010 at First United Methodist Church in Stillwater,
Oklahoma. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John was born on April 30, 1941, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Glenn H. and
Bernice Cochran Bryant. John grew up in Stillwater, graduating from Stillwater
High School in 1959. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1964 with a
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, and earned a Master’s degree from The
University of Illinois in 1968.

John married Linda Sue Carhart, of Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 30, 1964.
John and Linda raised one daughter, Mary Ellen.

Following graduation, John was employed as a professional architect at The
Benham Group in Oklahoma City. But his true passion was teaching. In 1970, he
was hired as a Regents Professor of Architecture at Auburn University, where he
taught until 1976.

Following that, John was awarded the distinct honor of a Senior Fulbright
Research Scholarship. Herewith, John, Linda, and Mary Ellen spent a year in
Japan, where John researched and photographed ancient Japanese architecture.
This research became the foundation for his later specialization in teaching
Non-Western Architecture classes at Oklahoma State University.

Following his year in Japan, John was hired by Oklahoma State University as
Head of the School of Architecture, a job he held from 1977 until 1985.

During his tenure as Head, John made two trips to China as a member of a
delegation of U.S. Architectural Educators. They were asked to facilitate the
re-establishment of schools of architecture when that country re-opened
relations with the West.

Following his time as Head, John served as a professor, teaching Design Studio
and Non-Western and Japanese Architecture, the latter of which was frequently
voted as “Favorite Class” by the students he loved so much. He retired from
teaching in 2000.

In 1997, John was chosen as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.

John not only loved to teach, he loved to learn. His adolescent hobby of
shortwave radio listening led to a lifetime of radio study, and eventual
expertise. John was internationally known as a radio antenna designer and
tester. His standards were high, and he was never satisfied. John had a great
interest in the history of radio, as well.
He co-authored four books on the history of the Zenith Radio Corporation with
his dear friend, Harold Cones.

He and Harold also co-authored the book Dangerous Crossings, and account of the
first modern polar expedition in 1925, in which radios and airplanes were first
used in the far north.

From 1988 to 1992, John self-published six annual editions of Proceedings, a
compilation of articles written by short-wave radio enthusiasts, sharing their
expertise about this unusual and technically complicated hobby.

In 1986, John and Linda vacationed in the San Juan Islands in Washington State.
They loved the area so much, they eventually bought property for a second home,
which they designed and built themselves over the course of several years, the
ultimate do-it-yourself project.
Of all his many and diverse interests, John was most passionate about his role
as both an educator and advocate for his students.

John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda, of Stillwater, Oklahoma and
Orcas Island, Washington, daughter Mary Ellen Nesser, her husband Noel Nesser,
and grandchildren Katherine and Charles Nesser, of Fort Worth, Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment fund at First United
Methodist Church, 400 W. 7th St., Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Condolences may be e-mailed to the family and on online obituary may be viewed
by visiting http://www.strodefh.com

[IRCA] CKKY-830 Wainwright AB reapplies to CRTC to move to FM

2010-02-11 Thread Deane McIntyre
CKKY-830 Wainwright AB has reapplied to the CRTC to move to FM (101.9
MHz, 57 kW, 135.9 meters).

Their previous application to move to FM was rejected by the CRTC on
the basis that

their owner (Newcap) would have three FM stations in the same market
due to signal

overlap with their Lloydminster station CKSA-FM. In this application
there is a deep null

towards Lloydminster to get around this problem. If this application
is approved, it will

allow CFCW-790 Camrose AB to go ahead with their planned move to 840.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-72.htm#16

16. Wainwright, Alberta
Application No. 2009-1662-9

Application by Newcap Inc. for a broadcasting licence to operate a
new FM radio

programming undertaking to replace the existing AM station, CKKY
Wainwright.

The new station would operate on frequency 101.9 MHz (channel 270C1)
with an average

effective radiated power (ERP) of 57,000 watts (maximum ERP of
100,000 watts with an

effective height of antenna above average terrain of 135.9 metres).

The applicant indicated that the existing Country music format of the
station would

be maintained on the FM service.

The applicant requests permission to simulcast the programming of the
new FM station

on CKKY for a period of three months from the date of implementation
of the new station.

The applicant also requests, pursuant to sections 9(1)(e) and 24(1)

This is because Gaspe has an accent over the e which I included in

2010-02-11 Thread Mike Sanburn

Pat, nice going on the KTRP verie!! And thanks for providing the verie signer
and address. I couldn't believe how powerful that test tone was here that
night. Perhaps our DX test committee (once known as CPC) could arange a full
fledged DX test with KTRP and we could see just how well the signal really
does?? It's the right time of the year. I assume the gentleman at the station
is bi-lingual!? (What's the old saying? When you assume, you make an Ass of U
and Me, hi...) Congrats again--Mike Sanburn.

Mike,

Amador Bustos is in control of the station in the test mode. Portland
has nothing to do with it as yet, so I doubt a test could be set up now.
I don't know the company that is even handling the testing. But often it
is there at night of late with 25KW. If you can get an ID, you could
send a report, I am sure. They seem very friendly.

What do you mean, you dont know the company that is even handling the
testing? Bustos media is in control of it, and probably have an outside
consulting engineer fine tuning the technical aspects.

[IRCA] TP for 11 Feb from Victoria, BC

2010-02-11 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Sorry for the late report, but it wasn't that great a morning anyway. Overall
strength of signals seemed to be down, and though I'm sure more would have been
heard if I'd stuck with it longer, it didn't seem worth the effort. Listened
at 1410 and 1520 UT for a few minutes each time.
(and TA's this evening practically non-existent; occasional carriers)

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

828 JOBB

reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK
747 JOIB
774 JOUB

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be
understood by a native speaker

972 HLCA?
1287 JOHR?
1422 JORF?

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

873 JOGB //828
1134 too much splatter to tell
1188 didn't seem //594

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

864, 1008, 1566

and 11 Feb TA's? just carriers on 963, 1134, 1179, 1215, 1323 and
1611...possibly others, but except for 963, they were pretty erratic.

best wishes,

Nick
