[IRCA] Surprise

2019-06-27 Thread David Faulkner via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Hi All:
Sometimes you can listen to a station for a long time, thinking it's one of
your most wanted, and never hear so much as a local spot or ID. At other times
. . .

1330; KNSS, KS, Wichita 6/27/19, 2252 ELT I was just passin' through 1330 on my
way down to 1310 and stopped long enough to catch the end of a promo and, loud
and clear, "On 1330, KNSS." As I said, much wanted. Also noted very good signal
on what was almost certainly KGLO, 1300, Mason City, Iowa, carrying the Twins
game. Headed for K-Glow land this weekend for our son's installation as pastor
of the First Congregational Church of Buffalo Center, Iowa.
Just an observation; except for a couple of weak locals it is very hard to find
a strong signal at night on any regional or local channel around here. WXGO,
1270, Madison, IN dominates 1270 at night here and for many years about the
only readable signal on 1440 at night was WPRS, Paris, Illinois with its
hundred watts. In Michigan such channels tended to have two or three strong
signals. In the southeast, I have noted, unless there is a local signal those
channels contain such a hideous roar of stations as to be unlistenable. How do
DXers down there survive?

WJEH, 990, Gallipolis, OH remains silent. WOUB, 1340, Athens, OH went silent
last weekend. I suspect it will be back soon. The university has been letting
the students run it and with the students out of town they don't seem to have
done what they did last year and switched it over to simulcast with the FM.
Given its massive audience maybe nobody's noticed it's off.

Hi All:
WJEH, 990, Gallipolis, Ohio has been silent for at least the last week.
WAIS, 770, Buchtel-Nelsonville, Ohio is running satelite Christian Contemporary
music except from 9-10:30 a.m. when they are still running their regular local
talk show and tradio. Nx from Town Hall. I wonder how long the Edwards family
will be willing to continue losing money on this one. In the past five years
they've tried country oldies, gospel/preaching, and talk (everything from Big
Ed Schultz to Alex Jones). Their FM has dropped most of its local HS sports
coverage. The US-33 bypass is killing Nelsonville.

This is their second silent period this year. The FM repeater (103.7) was on

2018-07-17 Thread David Faulkner via IRCA

 Hi All:
Sounds to me like if they want to ruin broadcast radio they're going about it
the right way. That includes FM, where they're jamming so many signals on the
air even locals are had to listen to while driving, especially if there's the
least bit of skip. Granted, the airways are public and the public should have
access, but why does a relatively small market, such as my nearby
Parkersburg/Marietta market, (less than 100,000 people) need six local AMs and
(at last count) 20 commercial and non-commercial FMs, not to mention a small TV
station?

BTW; WATH, 970, Athens, now does local origination oldies 6-A.M.-10 P.M.,
though I think they're automated after 7 P.m. and they mix in local talk 9-10
a.m. and 6-7 p.m. (sports). But check out their live stream on the web sometime
and see if the afternoon guy doesn't sound loike the reincarnation of Casey
Casum of AT40 fame. It's uncanny.

[IRCA] Update

Hi9 All:

Some of you know I only have one eye. I just had surgery on that one, what they
call DSAEK. That's a fancy way of saying a partial cornea transplant. So things
are very blurry and will be for a couple months at least. But I do want to
report the following;

1390, WMPO, Middleport-Pomeroy OH back on after at least three weeks off. Same
AC format, but their signal is a lot better here, almost local, so I suspect
they may have a new transmiter. So if you catch a Q94FM ID here, it's them.

WMPO, 1390, Middleport-Pomeroy OH has been silent since 3/29, though OC seems
to be on. Their FM twin on 103.7 (94Q) continues operating //WTHQ, 1030.
WONS, 1080, Cannonsburg, KY is on carrying Walk FM (Contemp. Christian //WKAO,
91.1, etc.). As Walk-FM's TOH ID also includes 1110, WMUX, Hurricane, WV, I
assume they are on too, but I can't pull them in at all, and only actually
heard them several years ago when the noise floor was much lower.

[IRCA] I finally figured it out!

2018-03-24 Thread David Faulkner via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Hi All:
Back in January I reported that WMPO, 1390, Middleport-Pomeroy Ohio had
switched to a rock format and begun to ID as "Q94." I reported the same to
Radio Locator. To my surprise, neither their list nor Barry's noted the change.
While WMPO played AC, all lists continued to report it as Fox Sports.
So here's what happened. WMPO is now //WTHQ, 1030, Point Pleasant. Both ID as
"Q94" because 94.1 is the frequency of WTHQ's flea-powered FM. WMPO is owned by
"Positive Radio of Ohio," while WTHQ is owned by "Big River Radio," but both
companies have the same Blacksburg, VA address. The two AMs are only about 12
miles apart, but WTHQ nulls to the east and northeast, so doesn't get this way
very well, while WMPO gets in here pretty good.
So note that WMPO is AC, as is their FM repeater at 103.7 (which I can also
hear), and is //WTHQ, and the whole group IDs as Q94 FM. It shouldn't have
taken me so long to figure that out.

Hi All:
BCB, pretty much exclusively from about seventh grade on. I was interested in
Ham radio but never had the money to invest. When my friend Chris, who was a
ham operator, moved away one of the things that drew me and Bruce Heimburger
together was an interest in BCB DX. Bruce did more SW than I did, but all I had
was one of those old multi-band tube radios. But even after I bought Chris's
old Lafayette allband rx I didn't pay much attention to SW.
What I want to know is how Jim Renfrew DXes FM where he lives. When I lived
just down the road in Barre Center, I got good signals out of almost every FM
from Buffalo north to Barre, Ontario, then across to Kingston and across Lake
Ontario to Sodus, New York. That meant there was a signal on almost every
channel, and I note that at least three new signals have been added since.

Interesting. Can't imagine them coming back with their full 5 kw, especially
with only one tower. Probably less than 5 kw D and rather low power at night.
Should take awhile to get it back on anyway.

Hi Dave & gang:
Merry Christmas to all of you.
I don't know about KQV. I didn't pay much attention to 1410 last night. They
were supposed to go off at midnight 12/31. I'm surprised, given their pattern,
that they are a problem for you, though I have noticed them coming in a lot
better at night. I assumed the reason for that was the loss of CKSL. WING does
not do well here at night, though who knows hos it will sound with its two main
competitors off. As for KQV, most of the staff is probably, from the way the
sound on the air, able to apply for Social Security. I wonder how long it's
been since they hired any new on air talent. News stations seem to hang on to
their announcers forever. WWJ, Detroit, for example, had for 40 years three or
four guys who were all veterans of the CKLW news staff back when they were the
Top 40 king of the whole region. In fact, I'm not sure Joe Donavan isn't still
there.

Where did you live in Michigan? I don't recall you reporting back when I was
EDXR editor and lived in Pot Huron.
I don't currently have access to my master log (because of Windows 10's
stubborn refusal to read files created in older file formats--help, anyone?)
but as I recall, I had WDEV-550 and WVMT-620 from VT and at least three RIs,
WPRO, WEAN-790 and WJAR-920, which was always the easiest of the three. Had at
least 3 from NH, WFEA-1370, (logged on a Monday morning w/WSPD off), WTSN, 1270
Dover (on SSS), and WHEB-750, from Portsmouth hrd. on s/off. I finally logged
WGAN, but for the longest time the only ME I had was WKTJ, 1380, Farmington
which ran a DX test for us, I think in 1969. Former IRCAan Jim Catterfeld (Bay
City) also logged WGAN, and I think Bruce Heimburger (my DX partner and former
EDXF editor) did as well.

New England was always easiest between 0400 and 0500 EST in April because most
of their stations either signed on or powered up during that hour and I was
able to log a number of GYs and a few daytimers, especially from MA ant CT.
Don't think I ever logged a VT GY though.

[IRCA] Daytime Enhancement

Hi All:
Vermont has always been tough for me. Still haven't logged it here. But back in
the day the 1480 Springfield used to run a regular frequency check, which made
the state a lot easier.
I didn't discover daytime enhancement until I moved to Ohio. It's helped me
with certain northern Ohio stations, notably the 1560s in Coshocton and Chardon
and the 1540 in Cleveland, all of which were logged at about 10 a.m. on a
winter day. On Friday, 12/15, I logged WOBL, 1320, Oberlin w/cw mx & two IDs at
1450 EST, but there were already several stations mixing with it by then. That
leaves me with three unheard operating Ohio stations, WCCD, 100, WPVL, 1460,
and WCSM, 1350. Somehow I doubt I'll ever log WCSM because of WCHI and WTOU.
Still, none of those seems as impossible as WJMP, Kent was, but it's gone so I
don't have to count it anymore.

NOTICE OF UNLICENSED OPERATION

Case Number:  EB-FIELDNER-17-00024522

On June 28, 2017, in response to a complaint, an Agent from the Chicago Office
of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC or Commission) Enforcement Bureau
(Bureau) inspected an AM station that was operating on the frequency 990 kHz
from Antenna Structure Number 1009006 in Carthage, Illinois.  The Agent
conducted the inspection with you, the owner of Ralla Broadcasting Company,
Inc. (Ralla), which previously held a license for WCAZ, an AM radio station,
and found that you were operating a Harris SX-1A transmitter on frequency 990
kHz with an output power of 975 Watts.

Upon further investigation, the Agent found that on April 21, 2017, the
Commission issued a letter to Ralla dismissing the license renewal application
for WCAZ and cancelling the license to operate the station because Ralla failed
to pay its delinquent debt owed to the Commission.

The Commission further stated it deleted the station’s call letters and that
any operation of the AM station on 990 kHz is unauthorized and must cease
immediately.

During the June 28, 2017 inspection, the Agent informed you that you had no
authority to operate the AM station on frequency 990 kHz and, therefore must
discontinue operation immediately.  You refused to cease
operating the AM station.

You are hereby warned that the operation of radio transmitting equipment
without a valid radio station authorization constitutes a violation of the
Federal laws and could subject the operator to severe penalties, including, but
not limited to, substantial monetary fines, in rem arrest action against the
offending radio equipment, and criminal sanctions, including imprisonment.

UNLICENSED OPERATION OF THIS RADIO STATION MUST BE DISCONTINUED IMMEDIATELY..

1330 WZCT, Scottsboro, AL 11/10, 1730 well on top w/gospel mx & ID by YL during
contest promo.  Gave website as "WZCT5000watts.;org."
1550 WITK Pittston, PA 11/9, 1800 ending preaching program, on top & almost
alone w/ID as,"WITK, Pittston, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre." Wonder if they left the
wick up as I should have heard this one (and WZCT) long ago given the signal
strength. Times are EST.
1390 WMPO, Middleport-Pomeroy OH has dropped Fox sports (apparently as of 11/1)
and also their 103.7 repeater. They now are carrying a rock format and IDing as
"Q94 FM." I could pull in their 103.7, but not the 94, which, it seems to me,
is most likely either on 94.1 (K-Love repeater in Athens) or 94.7 (Sunny 95 in
Columbus.). I'll try to find out more.

Also of some interest; WPAY-FM, 104.1 Portsmouth, Ohio (a monster that really
gets out) has dropped the Northern Ky University feed and is now a K-LOVE. Not
sure what they plan to do with the 94.9 in S. Webster or the 91.9 in

As noted on a couple of email lists, WNBP Newburyport, MA has dropped its
oldies format and now has Bloomberg business talk (... yawn).

Unfortunately this means that I have one music station fewer for my AM car
pushbutton choices.

The button that once was WNBP has now been reassigned to WXEX from NH on 1540.
That's more a classic rocker than pre-1980 oldies or nostalgia.  Still not a
bad station though.

Signal strength of WXEX is a bit less than that of WNBP but it is still usable
away from overhead power lines.

Both 1450 and 1540 have signal "issues" if I'm within 2 miles of the Cape's
south side facing Nantucket Sound.  WPGG Atlantic City, NJ interferes with WNBP
on 1450 and WADK Newport, RI interferes with WXEX on 1540.  Still, in many
areas north of Route 28, WNBP and WXEX are "playable."

That I have to use either of these stations, neither intended to hit this area,
just shows how scarce the choices are for music on AM other than, perhaps, that
of an ethnic or religious nature.

WJTO 730 and WCME 900 from Maine are other car radio pushbuttons.  Neither of
those is a city grade signal here either.  Just shows how slim the options are.
In the late '60s, we had rock from WRKO and WBZ Boston, WPRO Providence, WHEB
Portsmouth, and WABC NYC all providing good signals here.  Probably a couple
out of ME too.

WXEX mentions 92.1 and 97.1 FM with no mention of the 1540 AM.

Well, just for giggles, I checked those channels.  92.1 is WOMR out of
Provincetown (some of you will remember as being of Ernie Cooper fame) and 97.1
had "97.1 the Wave" which, per web search, turns out to be WAVD Milford, DE
(!), obviously via tropo and likely not a regular.

Hi Again Everyone:
WTHQ, 1030, Point Pleasant, WV is on but very weak. Noted this morning w/spot
for Pleasant Valley Hospital, but barely audible & completely unreadable after
0800. When we first moved here 22 years ago they had a near local quality
signal & I caught the occasional WVU FB game they carried. Now their signal is
far weaker than WJEH, 990, Gallipolis (1 kw, right across the river from them)
and WIOI, 1010, New Boston (about 15 miles west of them & also 1 kw).
Transmitter trouble? They replaced the transmitter not all that long ago. This
signal is much too weak even for their 2.9 kw critical hours authorization.
Anybody know anything more about them?

Hi All:
I first heardWFLI in the late '60s running a full-power test on a Monday
morning when my local (in Port Huron) CHOK was off. Anybody know the reason for
this? High operating and maintenance costs, a la CKSL, or can't get parts, a la
WDOD? A look at Radio Locator shows a lot of stations in the immediate area
and, though they use three towers in the daytime and 4 at night, the strong
S.E. lobes of both suggest some of those towers may be common. Given the number
of strong signals in that comparatively small market, I wonder how anyone makes
money in radio there anyway.

[IRCA] WMNY

Hi All:
Just a note from recent travel. WMNY, 1150, New Kensington, PA, is, contra
Barry's list, on. Noted yesterday w/Black Gospel mx while passing through
Pittsburgh. At 1750 was playing a gospel countdown show. However, WGBN, 1360,
McKeesport, was not heard so apparently is still off. Also no sign of WAVL,
910, Apollo so I wonder if they aren't off again. Nothing else of note, but I
was wondering about one of my few unheard (here) Ohioans. Is WJMP, 1520, Kent,
off and gone. I used to hear them regularly at s/off in Port Huron but they are
so directional I knew I'd never hear them here. So if they're gone, I can stop
trying. If they're gone, that would leave me with 4 unheard Ohios, 1000 in
Parma the 1350 in Celina, 1380 in Lorain and the 1460 now in Cleveland. It
would also mean that, since I logged the old 1080 in Sydney just after we moved
here, as well as WPAY, 1400, WFRO, 900, the 900 Canton, the 1040 in North
Ridgefield and the 1500 Youngstown, I have now heard more Ohioans than are
currently operating.

Hi All:
While I'm sorry to see the big stations go, they really are dinosaurs. The only
way I can get a listenable signal out of WLW anymore is to listen in the car,
and even then they will occasionally be overridden by a descending warbling
tone that has to be coming from one of the neighbors' routers (if it's not
coming from mine). If there was something I wanted to listen to on WLW I'd
probably listen online. I personally don't think AM can be revitalized, no
matter how many signals they put on it. The costs are getting too high to
justify the return on investment, particularly when we start talking about
highly directional stations. How many stations have cut their night power so
they can be non-directional? My guess is, several hundred

The FCC is changing the whole spectrum. They are repacking the TV dial and
selling frequencies to the cel phone industry, so TV markets will be forced to
cram more channels into a smaller area. It used to be back in the 60s, a person
could easily listen to stations coast to coast with a clock radio. Today,
hearing a station a 1000 miles away takes some effort. But we do have streaming

It didn't like it at all that we had a lady in that church named Mrs. Hazel

Just back from long trip. Saw our old friend Bruce Heimburger in South

Carolyn are doing well. Bruce edited EDXF for many years in the 1970s.

Noted KFNS, 590, Wood River, Illinois and WANS, 1280, Anderson, SC, both off
and completely silent (no carriers). KFNS noted off 11/1, and WANS noted off
11/9.

WBKW, 1070, Beckley, WV is on, but is no longer gospel. Is // 93.5, WBKW-FM,
which runs a rather eclectic mix of black and white gospel and country. The AM
had a lot of background noise that sounded somewhat like a continuous dial
tone. The FM had a fair amount of mid frequency hiss (hiff might be a better
way to describe it). I can't imagine being a regular listener of any station
with that kind of background noise.

audible right in Carlisle or WHYL was on rebroadcasting WIOO at very low

[IRCA] Visit to SC

2014-09-02 Thread David Faulkner via IRCA

Hi All:

Noted a couple things that don't quite match up with the online list I usually
check.

910, WOLI, Spartanbujrg is local origination oldies, but at least once they
said rock and country oldies, and I heard them follow the Little River Band
with Alabama. All in all, a rather interesting mix.

1440, WGVL, Greenville was not carrying Fox Sports. Instead they had Glen Beck.
So conservative talk may have moved (to some degree) off 106.3 FM. Noted 106.3,
WORD, carrying Hannity at night, and doing a lot of local stuff during the day,
so I wonder what else may have moved to 1440. Also noted that the 1400
Spartanburg and 1070, Beckley, WV are still off.

BTW, Back in June I reported that WEMM, 1200, Huntington, was back on. I noted
them after 2000 w/gospel mx WEMM, Huntingfon, IDs, but no mtn of their
slogan, Shine 1200. The signal was weak but readable mixing w/WMIR. I have
not heard them since at any time of the day. They used to crank about an S-7 in
here, even on bad days. So I suspect if they are on, their power is way down,
and I rather think they are not on at all.

Re: [IRCA] The 1620 WJDI Story

2014-02-04 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

I never heard WJDI, but I wonder if anyone recalls a pirate run by my HS speech
teacher, Bob Trapp, in Grand Rapids, MI, in the late 50s. I think he used the
calls WMAX, later used by other GR stations. Claimed he was running 100 watts
on 1060 was the only GR station playing rr at the time. He got Port Huron
Northern HS its FM in 1972. But the year before that he got some kid in the
electronics shop to build him a carrier current transmitter and was
broadcasting around the school on 1000 and again using the calls WMAX. All that
was well and good, but his transmitter had a nasty spur on 1015 that covered
the whole town. Mr. Trapp also moonlighted at WHLS for a time. He died of
cancer in about 1975.

PS. In the It's a small world department, my roommate at MSU took piano
lessons from Mr. Trapp's mother and thinks he remembers the pirate station.

WBES, 950, Charleston, WV, Fox Sports, may have been off yesterday because of
the storm or may have been running reduced power. They seem to be on today, but
with a very poor signal. WKDN, WCTN, WIBX (the lest two being new here) both
noted mixing with others 2/3, 1700 EST, but no WBES. Usually very readable
signal, but not today. WATH, 970, Athens was also off for extended periods 2/2
in the morning and 2/3 much of the day. That too appears to be weather related.

Hi All:

Noted in the last half hour WUFO, 1080, Amhearst, NY w/urban contemp, WKTE,
1090, King, NC w/urban oldies (both on late for MLK Day?) and the Oil City on
1120 w/ESPN, all blasting in between 1800 and 1830. Only WUFO is new here. Why

[IRCA] New Loggings

2014-01-10 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

For the first time in I don't know how long I actually logged two new stations
this evening;

1250  KYYS  KS  Kansas City on top w/nice La X Superstation slogan Mexican
music on top in WTMA null. I've wanted this one for a long time and wonder if I
haven't been trying for them too late in the evening. Do they reduce power
during critical hours?

1290  WZTI  WI Greenfield well u/WHKY/WHIO others but clear, Milwaukee's
oldies 1290, slogan at 1700. No calls heard but definitely two here playing
oldies. Had a great signal out of WSSP-1250, so thought I'd try for this one
there they were.

Re: [IRCA] Status of Nearby Stations

2014-01-09 Thread David Faulkner
WWCS sure sounds like full power. Could even be ND, but I have no way to tell.
Could a faulty antenna monitor have been responsible for their disappearance
here last year? All I could get on 540 most of last year in the daytime was a
very weak signal out of WGTH, Richlands, VA.

Given their financial weakness (three format changes in the six years before
they went silent, few or no local spots), I'd say WLGC may be gone. I can't
imagine them operating on much reduced power. They have to put a listenable
signal into Huntington and Ashland to compete in that market.

I never understood why WJAW-630 didn't dominate the channel here in Albany.
With 1 kw ND, and a transmitter near Parkersburg, they should have been as
strong as the other Parkersburg and Marietta stations (even WMOA dominates
1490). Yet they were always just about even w/WLAP. Now they are blowing WLAP
away. As I recall, they mentioned new listeners in the Clarksburg-Morgantown
corridor. They are ESPN and ID frequently and run a lot of local spots and
promos, so if you don't have them, you might want to try. Some IDs are done by
local boy Nick Swisher. TOH IDs are, ESPN on the radio, WJAW, St.
Mary's-Parkersburg and WJAW-FM, McConnellsville-Marietta. During major
national sports broadcasts they sometimes add WMOA to the feed and do
three-station IDs.

WWCS was granted an engineering STA on December 31 which approved removal of

to operate at minor variance for 90 days pending repair and reinstallation of
the monitor. The minor variance was not specified. Some engineering STAs for
directional stations are granted for nondirectional operation at 25% of the
licensed power.

WEMM was granted a legal STA (notification of suspension of operations/request
for silent STA) on July 31, 2013. The justification was that the station had
been vandalized and necessary equipment had been stolen. It expected to
return to the air in a few weeks.

WLGC was granted a legal STA on January 25, 2013. The justification was that
storms caused a fire which damaged the transmitter, which led to antenna
maintenance issues.

I am not familiar with these stations. WEMM's few weeks have long since gone
by. WLGC went dark on October 4, 2012. A station off the air for more than
twelve months is subject to having it's license deleted.

Subject: [IRCA] Status of Nearby Stations

Hi All:

Have noted the following lately

WWCS, 540 Canonsburg, PA back in at full strength, sigs equal to WKRC and WCHS
here. Had been inaudible (but on) most of last year.

WJAW, 630, St. Mary's, WV now totally dominates WLAP is actually listenable
here. Jawco runs a three-station shopping spree three times a year. On the
Christmas one they said they were getting a lot of calls from the Clarksburg
Corrridor, apparently new listeners, so I wonder if this one has bumped power
up. Was off one morning in December for transmitter maintenance.

WEMM, 1200, Huntington, WV still silent. I only hear the New Castle here. They
advertise the FM on channel 3-TV, but no mention of the AM in those ads.

WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY not a peep out of `em here. All I can get on that
channel is a bit of WLGN splatter, no matter what rx I try. If they're on,
they're running low power into a long wire or something. There is absolutely
nothing on that channel here all day. Their FM, licensed to South Webster, OH,
is still on and playing cw.

Saul, I don't count call changes as new stations, either.  And, in
fact, I only count frequency changes as new stations IF a new station
comes on the old station's previous frequency and I manage to hear both
(example: me hearing KIDZ-1510 Independence, MO and KCCV-760 Overland
Park, KS in 1991, after having previously logged KCCV on 1510 three
years prior -- in my logbook I make this notation under KCCV-760:
Originally heard on 1510 on 4/9/1988).

What you have here is a situation much like WNWI-1080's in 1998.
WPOK-1080 in Pontiac, IL went silent, and WNWI-1080 in Valparaiso, IN
moved its CoL to Oak Lawn, IL, about 75 miles to north of Pontiac (the
difference being, of course, that there wasn't a frequency chance
involved, like WKPR moving from 1420 to 1440).  In my Iowa City
logbook, I have WPOK and WNWI listed as two separate loggings since
they were separate entities to begin with.

One could also face a dilemma with wondering how to count CJFT-530 Fort
Erie, ON and CIAO-530 Brampton, ON, since CIAO took over CJFT's spot on
the dial, even though their transmitter sites weren't all that far
apart.  Fortunately, I didn't have to deal with that, since I was lucky
enough to get CIAO on its previous 790 frequency in early 1991, just
months before it moved to 530.

[IRCA] WINW 1520

2013-08-23 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WINW, 1520, Canton, Ohio IS operating with its black gospel format.  However it
appears to be running much reduced power.  As far as I was able to tell,
driving through, it quickly grows inaudible as one leaves the city of Canton.
The signal strength is not only weak in the city, the sound quality is poor.
Indeed this is the first time I ever heard a local signal fade when the car
passed under an overhead sign in the heart of its city of license.  I wonder if
they're running it into a longwire.  They are certainly not using their
directional array so, to go on protecting the 1520 just 20 miles away in Kent,
they must be using very low power.  In the time I listened I heard only female
announcers and they ran right through the TOH with no ID.

Also noted: No sign of WCER, 900, so they are still off, as is WEMM, 1200,
Huntington, WZZW, 1600, Milton,, WV, and WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY.  WZUM, 1550,
Braddock, PA was running black gospel and WAVL, 910, Apollo, PA, calls itself
,The New WAVL, but continues with its old format of contemporary Christian in
the AM (until 9:00), and then goes to religious talk.

[IRCA] K-LOVE on steroids (and other matters)

2013-07-30 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

I have never, in all my years of DXing in Port Huron, heard anything on 1520
during the day except what sounds like a WPHM/WHLS mixing product.  But this
morning, at 8 a.m., on the car radio, had a very nice signal from WNWT,
Rossford/Toledo (K-LOVE).  It was putting a very listenable signal into Detroit
and didn't fade completely until we got to Marion, Ohio.  At bvowling Green its
signal strength was at least the equal of WSPD, with al other Toledo area
stations weaker.  We usually are barely able to hear the K-LOVE on 98.7 that
serves Ashland/Mansfield, Ohio while passing Upper Sandusky.  Today it lasted
all the way into Delaware.  Power increases?  Divine intervention?

In other matters...
WEMM-1200, WLGC and WINW-1520 and WZZW-1600 all continue off.  WJEH, 990,
Galipolis, OH, was off Sunday.  Will check on them tomorrow.
We took a road trip to Grove City, PA on June 28.  WWCS, 540. Cannonsburg, PA,
used to get in here pretty well.  No sign of 'em here, no sign of 'em in
Athens, no sign of 'em in Marietta, weak, garbled signal into Cambridge,
listenable by the time we got to Wheeling.  Coming up 71 from Washington, PA,
they sounded like we were passing through some rather deep nulls. They must be
running reduced power for some reason.

system in March. Don't think there's a live person there much.

1320, WCVG, Covington, KY was on w/RB. Barry has 'em listed as off.

1480, WDJO, Cincinnati, OH has been noted several times here (tho' not on trip
when I didn't check) playing local origination oldies, essentially the same
format as when these calls were on 1160.

1560, WPAD, Paducah, KY went right thru Paducah no sign of this one, not even
an OC. Could be temporary, but they were certainly off.

WEMM is still silent and as for WWCS, 540, there's no sign of 'em. I've heard
them regularly here since the days when they were WARO playing classical mx.
Several Pittsburgh area stations are day regulars here, including WMBS-590
u/WVLK, WKHB-620 o/WWNR, WPIT-730 (barely), WWNL-1080, and, of course, KDKA.
But WWCS has disappeared. I can't imagine this having anything to do with the
move of CBEF, so I suspect their power must be reduced for some reason.

[IRCA] WEMM-1200

2013-05-13 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WEMM, 1200, Huntington, WV is most certainly silent. Their on-line feed may
still be on, but nothing here but very faint traces of WKST. Also getting an
almost readable signal from WANB on 1210 and WOWO 1190 at its usual strength.
When WEMM is on it puts what I would call a semi-local signal in here.

In other notes; WZZW, 1600, Milton, WV appears to be off. All I hear is what I
suspect is Wheeling. Was listening this afternoon when they should have been
carrying Limbaugh (//WVHU) whoever was there certainly didn't have Limbaugh
(WVHU was). WVHU-800 continues running WVHU/WZZW IDs, though. WLGC, 1520,
Greenup, KY continues off. All I've heard daytimes on 540 for a long time is a
faint signal out of Richland, VA. WWCS, which got in here almost as well as
WKRC, 550, Cincinnati, must be off.

1230 is certainly interesting around here on weekends. WVNT, Parkersburg
carries FSR, which means all three of the stations audible here (WYTS and WIRO
are the other two) are FSR. It's a rather unusual effect.

[IRCA] WEMM - 1200

2013-05-03 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

There has been no sign of WEMM, 1200, Huntington, WV, for about two weeks now.
Usually has a decent level here. Noted WKST, New Castle PA on the car radio in
Athens the other day, but no WEMM. No problem with the FM. I wondered when
they moved from 1470 why they bothered to put their money into AM.

[IRCA] WDLR - 1550

2013-04-26 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WDLR, 1550, Delaware, Ohio is back to its former SS format, no longer // the
Marysville 1270. Mexican mx, but I'm not sure about their slogan as they are
very hard to hear around here except on the car radio. Something in this house
seems to be killing 1550.

[IRCA] WBKW - 1070

2013-03-30 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

I've been meaning to report that, when we passed through Beckley last Saturday
I noticed that WBKW, 1070 was off. Don't know if this means they've gone
silent again or were off because of technical trouble. I think they are little
more than a relay anyway. We'll head that way again in May so I'll check them
again.

Re: [IRCA] 1080 WYHY KY Cannonsburg - on consistently at night lately

2013-02-23 Thread David Faulkner
Yup, they're on again tonight. I don't see why this one couldn't get some
night power legally. WTIC is a very difficult logging here at night, even
w/out WYHY on, and KRLD disappears after Dallas sunset. The channel is
normally one of the quietest along the dial. Indeed I have often felt like I
was in a kind of DX hole here; nothing seems to be beamed this way. Back in
the late `90s, all I could get on 1440 at night was WPRS, Paris, IL, w/their
100 watts. There's next to nothing on 1310 now, a weak WIBA some WTLC, but
many nights not even that.

Hi All:

Noted WDSL, 1520, Moncksville, NC this morning at 0915 all alone w/local spots
promo for talk show, Saturday morning at 7 on WSIC. There has not been a
sign of WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY since they went silent over two years ago, no
matter what anybody's list may say. WLGC-FN remains on was cw last time I
heard 'em. In the past, when WLGC was operating, if they were off for some
reason I heard WINW, Canton, but there was no sign of them this AM, nor has
there been for some time. I'm sure WLGC is silent and I believe WINW is as
well. I'll be up that way in a couple weeks so I'll check it out.

WLGN, 1510, Logan, Ohio has been silent the last two days. Usually their
carrier is on even when they're silent and often they're making a hideous
noise. No carrier and no hideous noise the last two days.

Re: [IRCA] WMOV 1360 Format Change

Paul:

Sorry to argue with you, but back in December I reported on the format change
at WCHI. At that time WMOV was still carrying its talk format, particularly WV
Metronews. The same was true when I reported on the WYPC andd WBGS changes in
September. Despite WOUB slop in Athens, here WMOV has a good signal,
semi-local quality. I don't see much of a future for the station, as
Ravenswood is well within the Marietta-Parkersburg radio market area and
Ravenswood is a very small town.

2012-12-04 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

WCHI, 1350, Chillicothe, Ohio goes from oldies to Comedy 1350. Noted this
morning with new format, promos asking for listener feedback (Clear Channel
radio wants to know what you think...) promising comedy 24/7. For 1 kw
about 50 miles away, this one gets in here pretty well, even w/WOUB 1340 just
down the road. Think I'll see how well they get into Columbus next time I am
up there. Clear Channel has already repositioned their Chillicothe FM on 93.3
to serve the Columbus market.

[IRCA] A couple of notes

2012-12-04 Thread David Faulkner
Hi Again All:

As far as I can tell, WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY remains off. Barry's list has
`em on w/true oldies but I can't hear a peep out of them on 1520. Had KOKC and
a talker (WDSL?) mixing it up around 0900, but if WLGC is coming back w/oldies,
they're not back yet. Nothing at all here between 1230-1300 today. When they
were on they had a better signal here than the Cincy 1530.

Is WWCS 540 on? All I can hear is gospel from Richland, VA here.

Is the Canton 1520 on? They weren't last time I was through there.

Could there be a northwest opening tonight? Noted a KXEL ID in the clear
@1235, the WI 1640 w/fair sigs 1250 and WVON, 1690, blasting in just a minute
later.

[IRCA] Format changes, tentative logging

2012-10-31 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

First, a couple of format changes. I'm not sure how recent these are.
1030, WBGS, Point Pleasant, WV was oldies, now gospel, Faith Radio.
1330, WYPC, Wellston, OH was Adult Standards, now FSR, Your new sports voice.
Also had really good signals out of WV and KY today. Noted WLSI, 900 and WKKS,
1570, doing very well. Usually 900 is empty here. WKKS was running its usual
classic cw format, but w/no IDs, even at TOH, or any local talk or ads. Also
had WGTH alone on 540 w/no sign of the usually totally dominant WWCS. I
suppose it must be the snow in the mountains.

1160, WOBM, Lakewood, NJ tentative 10/29, 2200 EDT w/oldies, sometimes way over
but usually under WYLL (the same old story, over during songs, under when they
should have been talking). Tentative ID 2200, think I heard mtn of Lakewood
@2203. Possibly on day pattern or ND because of storm. If it was them
(They're the only oldies stn. listed on the channel) they were not doing storm
coverage.

Re: [IRCA] CJRN 710 Niagra Falls

2012-10-16 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

Guess that means after 11/30 there will be but one AM left on the Niagara
Peninsula, CKTB, 610, St. Catherines. At one time there were five, the
short-lived 530 in Ft. Erie, CKTB, CJRN, CHSC-1220 and CHOW, 1470, Welland. I
wonder how long it will be before all their smaller market AMs are gone.

WFAU, 1280, Gardiner, Maine is about five miles down the river from Augusta and

KSIB I think started Fox Sports radio
on their AM 9/10 IIRC. The FM remains country except for a
couple popular local programs, according to their website.
When looking up Fox Sports Radio 1520, found WJMP Kent, OH
and another new affiliate WFAU Augusta, ME. Was WFAU a
recent CP? Anyone heard it yet? Their website just says
under construction. 73, George S., MN

recent, as in within the past few days) format change.
KOLM remains ESPN, but the mystery station you may now be
hearing with Fox Sports Radio is KSIB in Creston, Iowa.
This per monitoring by myself throughout the day today.
They carry Jim Rome live from 11-2 CLT, among other
 programming.

I guess the question I have to ask is...WHY?   Des Moines,
some 50 miles away, already has a Fox affiliate on 1460.
And in the meantime, the residents of the community of
Creston are now being deprived of a station that will
provide local service to that community (I don't know if any
format changes have taken place at the sister FM on 101.3,
since I can't normally get it here).

[IRCA] WNXT - 1260

2012-09-16 Thread David Faulkner
Hi All:

Noticed WNXT, 1260, Portsmouth back on the air last Sunday morning, 9/9,
w/local gospel show.  First time I've heard 'em since the storm at the end of
June.  I think they were off altogether, because I could never hear so much as
a peep out of 'em all summer.  It is possible they were on with very low power,
but I don't think so.  At any rate, they are back and they are now Fox Sports.
ESPN is gone.  IDs as AM 1260, WNXT.

Hi All:

While WYPC, 1330, Wellston, has been back on for a week now, I'm not hearing a
pieep out of WNXT, 1260, Portsmouth.  The channel is completely empty.  They
protect Cleveland, so we're in their null here, but they are usually audible at
about the same level as WCHO, 1250, Washington Court House and WHIZ, 1240,
Zanesville.  All the power is back on now.  I wonder if a) they had tower
damage, b) I'm having a problem with interference on that channel, or c) if
they're a casualty of the terrible economy in that part of the state.  If even
WPAY-FM couldn't make it
