Subject: [IRCA] Update on antenna

Hi everyone,

This afternoon I went to Home Depot and bought two pieces of PVC pipe
along with two 5 foot copper pipes for the termination ground, and
hopefully tomorrow or over the weekend, I will get up my 3rd EWE antenna
up. I first thought of running it over to the tree at 15 degrees True
North, but there is another that is a bit farther to the East, and that
one would put me over to 25-35 degrees, plus the wire would longer. With
a EWE, it really doesn't matter all that much as the lobe is broad, but
that should be right in the middle of where I need to be. The edge of
the house is 11 feet in height and I fiqure using two pieces of PVC, one
inside each other, I can easily go up to 15-16 feet without any
problems. There are enough branches on the tree to find the same height.
Since the tree goes out to the North East a bit from our high winds
(Few trees grow straight around here), especially the Shore Pines, so I
will have a bit more length. I fiqure the total size will be 16X45X16 or
there abouts. My NW EWE is 21X55X21, and the SW is 25X100X25. So the NE
EWE will be a bit smaller, but still it should be close enough. The NW
one works pretty good, although not as much signal as the SW one, but
still fine. If a big wind comes up, I can easily drop the PVC pipe down
below the surface of the roof, so that should work out. I don't know
why I never thought of this before. Knowing EWEs, this should work well.
I have always had good luck with any EWE I have made in 28 years. I
will pass on the results. Now to get the matching transformer set up in
a box and the pot for the termination. I have plenty of both.

73,

Patrick

KAZ,

Thanks! I think the NE EWE will work out well too. The only problem I
see, is the NE downlead for the new EWE runs quite close to the
Horizontal piece on the SW EWE. Like a couple or three feet apart, it
looks like. I hope there is no interreaction with the two being so
close? But the downleads on both the NW SW EWE's run close to each
other too and I don't see any issues there. I only have the room I have,
so I have to do with what I have. hi.

My take home on all of this is that there's a lot of leeway in antenna design
and construction, and that often large deviations from the official designs
will work every bit as well as the original. I've often ran Beverages and BOGs
with the odd zig or zag and dip, and they've performed flawlessly. Conti
corner fed loops work great with virtually any variation of vertical or
horizontal dimensions, and any type of matching transformers. The bottom line,
experiment and choose the best for your situation. The EWE may indeed be the
best solely based on your unique ground situation there, Patrick..Walt.

Walt,

Thanks too. I think this should solve my problem with the lack of a lobe
to NE. At least I hope so. I have a few other ideas, if this EWE works.
I may try to raise the NE end of it higher in the tree and see what that
does to the pattern. I have had some luck with EWEs with the legs
different lengths, as long as it is not too different. But first, I want
to get it up and going. Hopefully I can get it in the next few days,
weather work permitting. At least I have the materials now.

Patrick,

If the near metal piece is horizontal, you shouldn't have a problem. I run
the bottom of my NW Flag through a metal garden fence and haven't noticed
any change in its performance.

Chris,

I would expert no problem ether as it is only the horizontal wire and
not anythjing larger, plus the SE element of the NW EWE is right near
the SW element element of the SW EWE, within a couple of feet on each
side of the tree trunk.

Hi everyone,

Well, my antenna repair turned out to be simple. I am glad. Digging up
the coax in 37 degrees and damp would not have been fun. With the coax,
I have replaced sections of it through the years and I have connections
in a couple of places with barrels. Apparently with the cold temps, the
interconnector pulled out of the connector about 6 feet from the end, so
I untaped the connector and unscrewed it, and took a look and there it
was. I cut off the old connector, crimped a new one on with a longer
piece of wire sticking out and I screwed it back together, taped it up
and everything is fine now. The antenna is working great.

Chuck,

Sorry I did not explain better. What I should have said, the center
conductor pulled away from the barrel connecting the two pices of RG6
together. I don't think the center conductor was long enough anyway. But
it is fixed now. Works great.
